W E L C O M E
It gives me great pleasure to invite you to review the 2019
HKA Yearbook. As always, it has been a wonderful year
during which we have watched the school moving beyond
adolescence - the focus of one of this year’s schoolwide
priorities. As part of the school’s evolving identity, we
have made a few modifications to the mission statement,
one of which included inserting the word joy as a key
aspiration for learning. When speaking with students about
the notion of joy, they have associated the word with:
feeling upbeat, happiness, laughter, creativity, elation,
sharing, being together, international and some of their
favourite memories.
The following collection of photos and stories provides a
snapshot of events, activities and learning that have
formed a rich tapestry of experiences taking place inside
and outside of our classrooms over the last 12 months.
Throughout the yearbook, you can see some of the
students’ happiest moments when they are inquiring,
competing, exploring, creating and imagining, all elements
of a rigorous and captivating educational journey.
Stephen Dare
Head of School
As you flip through these pages, we hope that the moments
represented bring back fond memories of the 2018-19
school year, and make you think of what it means to feel
joy in learning and in life.
Regards,
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the 2018-2019 Dragonfly Yearbook. The primary
school has had a thriving year from the start of the school
year with the introduction of Playgroup to the close of the
year with our Mandarin Immersion Trip. The year has been
filled with discovery and exploration in and out of the
classroom, deep thinking, new learning, and rich sharing
through the many exhibitions and assemblies. Students have
grown to understand their role and responsibility in the
school community as well as the larger world as they have
cared for our gardens, given service to school and worked
closely with local organizations as they took action from
their newly gained knowledge. A fine year of building both a
culture of learning and community.
Virginia Hunt
Primary School Principal
I encourage you to have your own celebrations and
reflections as a family with every page you turn of our
annual keepsake.
Thank you to all the parents for your continued support of
our students, teachers, staff and programs.
Warm wishes,
PLAYGROUP
C A PA B L E , C O M P E T E N T & C R E AT I V E
At HKA's Playgroup we
believe that children are
capable, competent and
creative. Children have been
supported to take the lead,
to have control of play and
to drive their own
exploration. Adults have
taken a step back to wait for
the discovery that a child has
made, watched how play
flourishes when we let it
unfold and wondered about
the meaning behind the play
that is taking place. Children
have been enticed by inviting
provocations of natural, open
ended and sensory rich
materials, allowing for
meaningful hands-on learning
to take place. Children have
been exposed to Mandarin in
an authentic and gentle way,
through songs, stories and
play based interactions.
We've learned that children
play through what they know
and what they want to know
more about. Play has proven
to be a powerful way for
children to express
themselves and how they are
making sense of the world.
ASSEMBLIES
All classes took to the stage
to proudly share their
learning during our weekly
assemblies. Audiences were
wowed with the range of
performances throughout the
year. We had acting, singing,
dancing, playing instruments,
audience participation,
issues addressed, poetry,
stories, videos, and above
all, confident and
enthusiastic learners leading
the fun.
In the block area you cannot break
other people's structures.
You need to turn on the light in the
home corner when it is dark.
Be careful in the kitchen because there
are glass things that can break.
If you love writing like me,
you can go to the writing table.
If people are using things ask them
if you can use it when they have finished.
When you paint you need to wear an apron.
Before exploration time you sit in a circle,
then you choose where you want to go.
If someone is not doing the right thing
you can ask them to stop.
You need to build inside the blue line so
that people do not trip on the blocks.
Use the ladder to climb up to the loft.
I like the stage. We can sing a song or make a story or
play the instruments.
I like to play families in the loft. I can be the big sister
and sometimes I am the dog.
When you go outside you can go in the mud kitchen. You
can do whatever you want. There is an oven so you can
cook and it is so squishy and mushy and we love it.
We love making stuff with Make-Do. We made a train and a
microphone and a castle and a transformer and a remote
control for a robot dog!
I like to build blocks with my friends. I love making stuff,
but I don't like putting it away after because it takes
sooooooooo long!
We can have fun!
To celebrate “Outdoor
day out at Lions Nature
children had a wonderful
time climbing trees and
rocks, painting with mud,
creating figures from clay,
sticks and leaves, listening
to stories, and exploring
nature with their friends.
They had time and space to
run and shout, and also to
sit quietly in the shade and
listen to the birds sing. We
Kindergarten have been
explorers - taking our math,
science, and literacy skills
outside into the world,
using the environment as
our third teacher. We have
jungle trekked, beach
combed, city walked,
transported ourselves
around HK and our
neighbourhood here in Sai
Kung. We love using what
we see to inspire our block
building, writing and these
trips help us think about
the world in a new way.
G R A D E 1
H O I H A B E A C H
We took many field trips
during our Sharing the Planet
unit of inquiry as we learned
about the importance of
plants, as well as the role we
could play in caring for
them. During our last trip,
we visited Hoi Ha beach to
explore and learn about
mangroves. Under the
guidance of Mr. Dean,
students were able to help
plant new mangrove trees.
But the BEST part was riding
in the boat!
We have grown and changed this year. We can take care of our things as we enter the
classroom each day. We have grown as readers, writers and inquirers.
Our reflections: This was hard for me before but now we can...
▪ Write more words.
▪ We can write neatly so the reader can read my books.
▪ We don't give up now!
▪ We can solve our problems.
▪ We can write longer sentences.
▪ We can draw more details.
▪ We can put spaces between our words.
▪ We can read books and we can write books!
▪ We can ask good questions!
New bags and shoes and pencils - everything new and cool.
We met Mabel and her letters, played with words and sounds.
We built with blocks and number tiles and explored Sai Kung town.
We've learnt so much and made new friends and my we've really grown,
we can work together in a team and sometimes all alone.
In library, music and PE we've always gone for gold.
1ài students were caring this year as they learned about
what it takes to be a good friend and a kind person.
They showed they cared about the different homes in Sai
Kung as well as in the world around them. They listened
to their customers while selling their goods and services
at Market Day and waited their turn while shopping. The
students looked for plants in need and developed a plan to
better care for them. When you care about your learning
1rén students showed their caring side in many ways this
year. They built relationships with each other, their 5rén
buddies, and their pen pals in the Philippines. During
inquiry circles, they helped one another become more
knowledgeable by sharing their new learning about
different house types and plants. Students worked in the
EC and UP gardens to harvest, weed and care for different
plants. They also took action planting mangroves and
caring for plants in need. Whether it was through doing
classroom jobs, growing friendships or taking action,
students showed their kind and caring attitudes by making
thoughtful choices throughout the year.
In G2 we have had many opportunities to enhance our
learning outside the classroom through various trips to the
surrounding Sai Kung playgrounds for our play unit, to the
Hong Kong Science Museum to explore the simple machines
there and the Heritage Museum's Bruce Lee exhibit to learn
more about our multi-talented local hero. Don't forget in our
landmarks unit, our visit to the 10,000 Buddhas Monastery,
and our epic landmarks trip in and around TST and Central
area. Thanks to all the parents who volunteered to come
support us on our field trips!
more about potential topics for the exhibition groups. The
groups identified several issues related to UN Sustainable
We started our year at camp, where children proved they were balanced.
We were reflective and caring during our investigation into human rights, and when
delving into migration we were inquirers.
When researching water issues we showed how knowledgeable we were. We proved to be
risk-takers when each student devised an experiment of their own, to further their
understanding of energy.
We were both principled and thinkers when designing our own advertising campaigns,
and were open-minded and communicators when we produced a play
It's been a wonderful year of collaboration, learning, creativity, and fun.
It’s been an exciting year in 4ren! Besides learning, we
also developed our learner profile traits even more! We
were risk-takers when we went away to camp for 2
nights. We were knowledgeable when we shared what we
do in 4ren in our assembly. We were thinkers when we
had to conduct research in order to write a persuasive
text about water. We were inquirers when we found
information about our families’ migrations for unit two.
We were caring when we welcomed new students to our
grade. We were balanced knowing when to have
movement breaks like ‘Uniquely Me’ and ‘7-Up’ during our
day. We were skilled communicators when we had to work
together to perform The Grade Four play. We were
reflective when we had to revise and edit our writing to
make it great. We were open-minded when we helped
each other kayak, paddleboard, and sail a boat during
camp. We were principled when we visited the food bank
Grade 5 took action to help the local environment by
participating in a meaningful beach clean-up.
Grade 5 Camp was all about challenging ourselves and taking
risks from abseiling down a cliff face to rock climbing to
tenting out in the wild...all in the span of 4 days! This year
we ventured to Tung Lung Island for camp, experiencing the
stunning nature and sea views.
Throughout the Grade 5 camp, we lived and breathed the
learner profiles and attitudes by being open-minded and
taking risks on the high elements, and being collaborative,
“It was fun! We had crazy days in a great and happy environment.
My biggest challenge was the Tyrolean Traverse. It was a bit scary
to look down but I did it!”, - Luca, 5ai
“We had an amazing time but it was tough sometimes. We got to
know all of our friends better and now love. A challenge was the
heights but you get over it and end up loving the whole
experience. We enjoyed all the challenges in camp and loved
chilling by the campfire. You got to see how far you could go and
how far you could test yourself. When it was tough we all had our
friends, the homesickness was worth it!”
- Cici, Lucy and Sophie, 5ai
“It was interesting seeing people challenge themselves because it
encouraged me to do these high risk activities too.”
- Serafina, 5ren
“For me, the most interesting part of camp was the toilets. I
mean, it wasn't like anything I was used to at other camps. There
was, now read this next line at your own risk, hundreds of insects
just sitting on the walls and some cockroaches, and caterpillars in
the squatty potty.” - Maverick, 5ren
“Abseiling was most interesting because it gave us a lot of
challenge to go down the mountainside, but it was cool because
your friends in your group were cheering you on,”
- Hunter De Leon, 5ren
kind and caring toward one
G5 Exhibition's central theme this year was “Passionate people unite to drive positive change”, where the students tuned
into the United Nations' sustainability goals to gain insight into global issues that populations around the world face.
Students followed their passion and interests, and formed groups to research and delve deeper into their chosen issue.
This secondary research allowed them a better understanding, and set them up to find out more by collecting data through
interviews, surveys and observations. By analysing this primary research, the students were able to go further and make
conclusions on what type of suitable, sustainable action they would like to take.
Their goal was to take positive action on a global issue on a local scale.
Our library was a busy place, also this past year, with lots of reading and inquiring happening
for books, read, or search for answers to questions. Throughout the day, classes visited to
engage in author inquiries and book club discussions, to find resources and inquire about
topics of interest, to browse the shelves to discover and check out books, to explore and
reflect on who we are as readers, and to enjoy lots and lots of reading time. Special highlights
were our Literacy Week celebrations, preparing for and participating in Battle of the Books,
collaborating with Bring Me a Book Hong Kong in spreading the love for reading through a reada-thon,
MANDARIN
L A N G U A G E & C U LT U R E
Our Mandarin programme provides students with a broader
understanding of Chinese language as well as its culture. We
value the importance of oral communicative language, the
skills of reading Pinyin and Chinese characters, as well as
laying the foundations for writing. In order to serve students'
different learning styles and needs, and to best benefit their
Mandarin learning, we use various strategies and resources to
create fun and engaging learning environments with
interactive activities like acting out stories, role-playing,
Sustainability at HKA is fundamental and is evident in our facility, our operations, and our learning. Inspired by the Unicef
Sustainable Development Goals, HKA successfully worked with like minded partners during the year to raise awareness and
take action towards a sustainable future.
▪ We recycled paper, glass, metal
▪ We accepted community recycling
▪ Our surplus food was delivered to organisations who feed
the homeless and underprivileged
▪ We grew our own food
▪ We composted
▪ We procured recyclable and FSC products to serve our
paper needs
▪ We tracked waste, energy and water usage as data for
learning
▪ We donated to charities who work towards achieving quality
education, zero hunger, peace and justice and conservation
for life on land and in water
▪ We cleaned Beaches
▪ We helped to preserve our local mangrove habitats
▪ We said no to single use plastics in our hkaEATS cafeteria
PK1, PK2, Kindergarten and Grade 1 taught us about ocean
conservation in “Songs of the Sea”. A big highlight was when
all of the Early Childhood students sang “Sandy Sandy Sandy”.
Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4 and Grade 5 took us on a journey
through world music with “HKA Travels”. They especially
enjoyed their combined Upper Primary performance of
“Alone Mashup”, that contained 2 electronic songs and
2 recorder songs, all together!
The Community Fair is the largest community volunteering
event on the HKA calendar. Careful planning starts months in
advance and culminates with over 1,000 people participating
on the day. It is a tradition which was started in the very first
year of our school and is an opportunity for us to share and
celebrate our international and cultural diversity through the
means of food, performances and activities. Each year the
community demonstrates their warmth and generosity by
creating and donating traditional dishes from their home
country which are lovingly displayed and shared from
international food tables set up in the cafeteria. Our talented
community also shares cultural music and dance performances
which this year featured parents, teachers and students from
as young as K grade. There are also sporting and crafting
activities available as part of this unique event. Thank you to
everyone who got involved and made this year’s Community
“Reading should not be
presented to children as a
chore or a duty. It should be
offered as a gift.”
- Kate DiCamillo
A special way we do this at
Hong Kong Academy is through
our Literacy Week
celebrations. This year, under
the theme Read All About It:
HKA Goes Under Cover! we
organized a wide range of
literacy initiatives and events
related to mysteries, news
and headlines, such as author
visits (Mio Debnam, Ya Chin
Chang and Howard Wong), a
book fair, daily Drop
storytime, a book character
various other literacy
activities. Once again,
Literacy Week brought our
entire community together,
showing how much we value
literacy, and what a special
gift we consider reading is.
Reading is cool at Hong Kong Academy – as can be seen in
our students' enthusiastic participation in our Battle of the
Books (B.o.B.) teams. Since our first participation in this
interscholastic event in 2013, which now brings together
close to 100 schools across Hong Kong, our students have
become confident participants. This year once again, our
teams showed much commitment in their preparation,
reading books on the respective 20-title list, attending
practice meetings on a weekly basis, and showcasing the
competition in friendly matches. More than that, we have
loved hearing our students enthusiastically recommend
titles from the lists to each other. Battle of the Books at
Hong Kong Academy has become another powerful way in
which we grow and nurture readers.
In 2018-19, the Secondary School has been an exciting place and as we reflect on the school
year as a whole, we have much to celebrate as a community.
Since August, students have been engaged in a range of learning experiences that have
empowered them to pursue pathways to individual excellence both in and out of the
classroom. The introduction of hkaFLOW has invited and encouraged MYP students to expand
their identities as learners, fostering their creativity, communication and problem solving
skills through passion projects, interdisciplinary units, field trips, house competitions and
exhibitions. In both our MYP and DP programmes, students think creatively and critically,
communicate effectively and grapple with rich concepts and meaningful content to develop
approaches to learning skills that are relevant both now and in the future.
Beyond the walls of HKA, students have engaged in responsible action, developed resilience
and interacted with local communities. Through Learning Outside the Classroom experiences,
ISTA Academy workshops, ACAMIS, SCISAC, ISSFHK, Battle of the Books and mathematics
competitions and service learning projects, our students become adaptable, confident and
tolerant. The partnerships they form with teammates, classmates and members of the broader
community are mutually beneficial and allow them to contribute to the creation of a
sustainable future.
This winter, as part of a service learning unit, Grade 6
students delved into the issue of food waste. Their purpose
was to create plan to address food and packaging waste at
HKA, while at the same time increase healthy snack options
at the cafe. As part of their research, they visited several
local businesses to gather information about various
practices. They also went on a field trip to Hong Kong
Organic Waste Recycling Centre in Sheung Shui, to see how
food waste is managed. After investigating the issue, they
worked in teams to make proposals that were presented to
the school's operations department. Their hope is that some
or all of their suggestions will soon be put into action to
create positive change in our school community.
6th grade LOTC was a unique experience, pushing us out of our comfort zones and helping us to be
more confident and capable. We wasted no time. As soon as we stepped off of the bus, Dragonfly
instructors guided us into our exploration around Tai O. We stayed for the first two nights in dorms by
the beach. The second day of camp, we tried canyoning. It was challenging and tiring, but in the end
it was rewarding to see how far we had come. On day three, we moved to our new location on the
beach, where we would stay for the remainder of the LOTC. Staying there was engaging and always
exciting, whether we were building rafts, catching crabs, racing boats in the small stream, or
further excavating our sandcastles. Overall, LOTC exhausted us, challenged us, and supported us.
It helped us to grow as people as well as students.
IDU’S
Food Production IDU: The Semester 1 Interdisciplinary Unit
(IDU) was focussed on the topic of Food Production and drew
from the disciplines of Science and Individuals and Societies.
The statement of inquiry was 'Individuals can manage local
environments to become self-reliant food producers and
consumers while supporting good health'.
They engaged in the investigation by investigating the
different food production systems, working with local
experts to learn how to successfully plan, maintain and grow
a winter crop, visiting local organic farms as well as markets
and supermarkets. Students will ultimately draw from all of
these experiences to assess the degree to which they might
have control over their own food choices and food security.
The students also placed a large focus on assessing their
own Approaches to Learning and successful group work. They
demonstrated commitment throughout the project, watering
and tending the gardens on a daily basis has resulted in a
range of different vegetables that was taken home and
enjoyed by their families.
The 3rd floor gardens continued to be put to good use for
the rest of the academic year, with new crops planned for
Impact HK.
S E C O N D A RY
Math & Art IDU: Students explored how simplicity and beauty can be used as tools to inform both mathematics and visual
art. What similarities are there between how artists and mathematicians interpret the world and communicate that
understanding?
Students had practical experiences using geometry to create artworks, learning how to tessellate shapes, and exploring how
and why artists have used these mathematical approaches in different cultures across time and space. We looked at
symmetry, pattern and balance in Renaissance art, and in geometric Islamic art.
Students learned how to use simple tools such as a straightedge and compass to create precise, complex geometric shapes.
Through this process, students investigated the similarities and differences between the way artists and mathematicians
understand and use ideas of beauty and simplicity to interpret and describe the world.
EXPLORATION
G R A D E 7 L O T C
The grade 7's stayed closest to home by venturing into our
nearby Sai Kung Country Park for a week of adventure
challenges with their friends. The first day was spent getting
to know the instructors and playing some games before they
were off to bed in the dormitory. On day 2 they hiked out to
their campsite to set up tents for the rest of the week before
jumping into all the activities. Student's kayaked, learned
survival skills, raced rafts they built themselves and
coasteered around the rugged Clearwater Bay coastline.
Cooking their own food at night was also a lot of fun for the
students.
Migration Stories: This IDU examines the complex topic of
migration through the curricular perspectives of drama and
language acquisition. The main aim is to deepen knowledge
and understanding of the historical, social, political,
economic, cultural and psychological aspects of migration.
We believe that the topic can be best understood using
dramatic strategies to develop empathy and recognize the
role of the imagination in making sense of the issues.
Through an awareness that language is closely related to our
sense of identity, this unit examines the role language
acquisition plays in the struggles often faced by migrants.
We also develop an understanding of the distinction between
refugees, asylum seekers, expatriates and general terms like
immigration and migration. The unit will culminate in a
performance/installation/exhibition designed to make the
general public aware of the complex issues involved.
Assessment will be based on continuous reflection in
discussion, theatre games and exercises, a process journal
which documents changing perspectives and developing
ideas, devising and rehearsing for the final performance and
a final reflective piece considering the whole process. We
will be using blogging, video and audio responses techniques
to examine perspectives and values. In addition, we may
make use of verbatim theatre techniques to tell real-life
stories within an imagined space.
yangshou, china
CULTURAL EXPERIENCE
G R A D E 8 L O T C
The grade 8's went to
Yangshuo, China this year for
LOTC. I found this trip to be
very fun and interesting. We
started off the week by
travelling to China via buses
and a train, this was a whole
day and it was still quite fun.
The first day at the hotel, we
split into our activity groups.
My group started with
climbing and biking and it was
tremendous, whether it was
the views or the general
experience I think I can say
we mostly enjoyed the trip
that day. The next day we
went fan painting and caving.
Fan painting was a little rocky
at first because no one spoke
Mandarin well enough to fully
understand the teacher but
we ended up having a lot of
fun. Caving was honestly very
cool, we went in a boat to the
cave and then we walked
through the cave and saw
many diverse creatures. One
of my favourite parts of this
trip was the mud pool inside
the cave, we all had loads of
fun in there and ended up
recreating the peanut butter
baby meme. Then we did
some cooking lessons, we
made five dishes and ate them
all for lunch. After this we
went on a hike to a farm
where we spent the rest of
the afternoon doing
community service. In the
evenings at camp we played
games as teams and learned
about farming (especially
when it came to farming the
chickens...). This was a
memorable camp because I
got to know my grade a lot
better and I made some new
friends. I learned how to cook
some delicious traditional
Yangshuo style food and I
learned how to be more open
to things I've never tried
before. Overall, this camp
was amazing and I am glad
that I was a part of it, the
teachers and dragonfly staff
were so helpful and kind and
it was nice to not have to be
in school for a week and go on
an adventure!
IDU’S
World Music & Culture:
The Grade 9 Students are
currently involved in an
interdisciplinary unit
integrating Language
Acquisition and Music. The
'World Music & Culture' unit
has enabled students to
explore both Mandarin and
Spanish languages and
through song have been
exposed to various types of
music from a diverse range
of countries and cultures
that include Spain, the
Americas and China. Students
have created their own lyrics
inspired by what they have
studied, and will soon be
combining this language with
forms of original music. This
will then lead them to
creating final music
compositions and a final
performance piece at the
end. Over the past two
weeks students have been
given grounding and
background knowledge in
both Spanish and Chinese
cultures: Focus that included
instrumentations, lyric
writing, imagery and music
analysis. They also have been
recording their learning
experiences in a whole grade
blog for reflection and shared
learning. From January,
students will be well on their
way to creating their final
original performance pieces
and we wish them well in
their endeavour.
Service As Action:
Poverty & Business in HK
This service learning project
connected with student
knowledge of poverty gained
through their I&S Poverty and
Development unit and added
a local context with an
exploration of poverty in
Hong Kong. It provided an
opportunity to better
understand what it really
means to be homeless or to
live in poverty. Students
worked on projects that aim
to build empathy,
understanding and a desire
to take action. Some
students chose to meet and
deliver items to the homeless
community in the areas in
which they live and to
participate in 'Kindness
Walks' run by the ImpactHK
group. Other studentgenerated
projects were
created in an attempt by
students to better educate
themselves and others on the
challenges of poverty and the
actions that are possible to
help make a difference.
These included building a
cage home, making a
documentary and creating a
proposal for a school 'sleep
Rough' experience. Prior to
this the first week of the unit
involved a field trip to
Crossroads Foundation where
students completed the
'Struggle for Survival'
simulation.
CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT
The trip to Vietnam was
absolutely amazing.
Throughout the week, we had
multiple photography
courses, a bike tour, boat
rides, an authentic
Vietnamese cooking class,
mask and lantern making,
and more. We were able to
eat delicious Vietnamese
cuisine all week long, my
favorites including
Vietnamese spring rolls and
pho. I especially loved that
we were given the
opportunity to participate in
a Vietnamese cooking class,
where we learned how to
cook spring rolls, Vietnamese
pancakes, and more.
Throughout the week, we
were also given several hours
of freetime, where we were
able to explore the town in
groups and practise our
photography skills,
photographing the local
scenery. I was a complete
beginner in photography, but
by the end of the week I had
learned so many new skills
and tips, which were taught
to us by professionals.
Furthermore, the hotel
accomodation was great, the
local sights were gorgeous,
and the overall trip was a
blast. I loved being able to
explore the temples, go into
the local shops, and
photograph the sights and
the locals of the community.
Overall, the trip was an
amazing experience where I
got closer to all my peers,
improve my photography
skills, and just had a lot of
fun!
IDU’S
Maths & Design IDU: The underlying premise behind the
grade 10 IDU was, "a greater understanding of Maths and
Design can assist us to make better choices about our
chances of winning the games we play".
The design brief for this IDU was to create a game which
uses the disciplines of Design (design cycle) and Math
(probability theory) to create a fun game which will raise
money for the HKA scholarship fund.
S E C O N D A RY
Semester 2 IDU: When faced with matters with ethical consequences, how do we make decisions about what is right? Grade
10 students explored the tension between the human need for scientific progress and the role that the media plays in our
understanding and opinion of such innovation.
This IDU focused on the groundbreaking gene-editing technology, CRISPR. Alongside the science behind CRISPR, students
learned about systems of ethics and how these rely on a delicate balance between reason and emotion. Using their
individual ethical systems, ways of knowing and class discussions about the social implications of CRISPR, they reached a
decision about their own opinion of CRISPR technology.
By looking at real world issues and 'technopanics' from the past, students next evaluated how persuasive media can
influence public opinion. As a response, students created their own persuasive texts including public service campaigns,
feature articles, infographics and editorial columns. Their original ideas rightly question whether we are at the beginning
of a positive revolution in human health and wellbeing or a dystopian version of the latest Marvel anti-hero universe. How
will you decide?
G R A D E 9 - 1 1 L O T C
We went on a six day / five night trip to Thailand, more specifically on the River Kwai. The first two nights, the students
were stationed at Barracks off the River Kwai, then two nights camping after a 25-27 km trek down the River Kwai each
day, followed by the last night being spent in a resort. On the second day, the day after the groups arrived, everybody took
a trip to the Death Railway, learning about how the slaves built it in World War Two. On the fourth night, we had locals
come in and teach us some local Thai dishes. The dishes that won the competition were the Thai Green Curry and the
Phad Thai. On the fifth day, there was an Adventure Race, which included learning about the different Cultures and History
about the area next to the River Kwai, and then building a raft to go onto the River Kwai. It started with the groups
creating smoke by lighting a piece of leaf that gives off a high amount of smoke with flint and steel. Some skills that were
learnt included using a Throw-Bag, Kayaking, Cooking, Navigation, and Tent Set-Up.
by Alasdair Paul, Grade 9
In November of 2018, a group of around 20 HKA students went to the Kanchanaburi region of Thailand. It was a trip full of
cultural immersion, wilderness engagement, and all around fun. We travelled to Thailand and spent our first two nights in a
government lodge. We spent these days preparing for our river expedition and immersing in the rich history of the area.
Then, on the third day, we got in our kayaks and headed down the River Kwai. We spent 2 days on the river, and both
nights camping. We ate locally cooked delicious food, swam in the river, and enjoyed the beautiful scenery that surrounded
us. The last day was spent doing an adventure challenge which involved us using the extensive skills we had learned to
navigate our way down the river, through a local Mon village and leading us to a lovely resort that we got to spend our last
night in. There were many memorable things that happened; our encounter with an elephant, all of the delicious food, the
fun games and supportive trip leader, and really just spending time with our peers in a new and exciting environment.
bracelet that was meant to keep our souls in our body. The expected. However, if there was one specific reason to go to
focus of the trip was community service and a major
Cambodia it would be the excursion to Angkor Wat and the
learning from this was how these developing countries other temples around it. The scenery alone would be worth
require so much manual labour in order to develop even a it, and the cultural embrace we felt from visiting was an
little bit. With 18 students working for multiple days, only a indescribable feeling.
SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT
My trip to Borneo was one
that I will never forget. We
spent the majority of the
time in a rural village,
Bongkud, about two hours
from Kota Kinabalu. In
Bongkud, we slept in
longhouses, got woken up by
an annoying rooster every
morning, spent time with the
local kids, hiked at 5am,
made cement, and played a
lot of cards. It was a service
trip, so we spent time
working on projects in the
village. We worked on
improving the bleachers and
building trash cans by the
local sportsground, and
improving a walkway through
the village. Even though it
was a service trip, we also
had lots of fun freetime. From
a sunrise hike to running away
from bats, I had such a fun
time in Borneo. It was such an
amazing experience and I
learnt so much. For a week, I
experienced a culture so
different from what I
experience here, and it was
so amazing to see how the
people of Bongkud live their
everyday life. I would highly
recommend anyone to go on
this trip for an incredible
During our LOTC Trip to Borneo, we participated in a range of activities such as community work, playing sports with the local
going to pick coconuts by a river. One of the staff members with us opened both of our coconuts, and we got to drink the water
straight out of the coconut! Another memorable highlight was the sunrise hike that we did. Even though we had to wake up at 4
am, once we reached the top, I was able to experience a truly magnificent and unforgettable view of Borneo's sunrise and the
clouds floating low over the mountains. During the trip, I learnt about Bongkud's culture, including their native language
I have been at HKA for almost 5 years now, which is incredibly strange since it
perceive and move at such a speed that the missiles
only move 9.5 miles per hour, 0.5% of their original
speed. Plus after this Gru punches a shark and it is
Global citizen: a person who conducts their daily life with a commitment to understanding others; who makes decisions
with an awareness of how they affect communities locally and globally; and who advocates and holds themselves
accountable for social and environmental sustainability.
The Global Citizenship Diploma (GCD) is a high school credential that allows HKA students to qualitatively describe their
whole learning in the context of becoming a global citizen and making a contribution to the world. It is a unique approach
for students to distinguish themselves at a deeper level than in the classroom alone, empowering students to pursue their
DESIGN
Once again student creativity and innovation is showcased through
Design here at HKA. A number of new teaching units and design
opportunities have been introduced this year to motivate students,
encourage inquiry and support their interests.
Within the MYP curriculum, new units such as 'innovative packaging',
'portable digital device accessories' and 'educational children's toys'
have all been well received.
HKA FLOW has also given our students the opportunity to explore
such diverse fields as robotics and Formula One racing.
Design students have also contributed to whole school activities such
as set design for the annual school production and ticketing for a
range of events.
This year Design staff have also embarked on Design activities in the
primary school, supporting students in grades 2, 3 and 4.
The greatest range of diversity, creativity and innovation is evident
in our Diploma program where graduating students completed design
investigations into a range of fields including, graphic design,
textiles, assistive technologies and product design.
As well as health based classes which covered the topic of
safety and injuries in sport. Over the course of the year a key
focus has been approaches to learning skills. Demonstrating
the ability to transfer skills from one sport to another. Being
able to collaborate and communicate in small and large group
ARTS
GRADE 6-8: We were excited to have an expanded Visual Arts
programme this year for grades 6-8, with semester courses
providing more time to dig deep into new skills, art
movements and creative processes. Grade 6's created fantasy
fruits using clay, combining imagination and observation. They
then worked on developing strong artistic habits in a processdriven
painting unit. Grade 7's created large-scale group
collages of key individuals from the HKA community, before
applying this knowledge to their own individual self-portraits.
Grade 8's explored observational drawing, and also the role of
games in creating surrealist artworks.
S E C O N D A RY
GRADE 9-12: In the upper years of the MYP arts classes
students spend time developing skills, investigating the role
of the arts and developing their of means of expression. In
grade 9 students explore the many ways we perceive and see
the world through explorations in drawing, In grade 10
students explore the role of artists and way they communicate
in contemporary art, in more depth. Students develop skills
and work on independent projects throughout the year. At HKA
in the arts we give value to journey of art making and
encourage students to explore what it means to think like an
artist. We had a fantastic art show for the grade 12 students
this year which demonstrated how divergent our students
approach to are making is at HKA. Students made work that
CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) is a self-directed programme that HKA students complete throughout Grades 11 and 12. Over
the course of 18 months, students work towards achieving seven learning outcomes by participating in a variety of experiences
at school and outside of school. A key requirement of CAS is the CAS project, a student-initiated, collaborative experience
during which students engage in investigation, planning, action, and reflection. Students also have an opportunity to
demonstrate and share their learning in various ways such as the CAS project exhibition that was held in November.
Service is a particularly important aspect of CAS. When asked about service during their final CAS interviews, this year's Grade
12 students noted that service melded their learning with actually doing something to make a difference, helped them to put
aside their needs and focus on the needs of others, and gave them a sense of responsibility for contributing to the community.
This year our students participated in a wide variety of service experiences including LOTC trips, local recycling initiatives,
beach and river clean ups, soap recycling, animal conservation work, dog walking, volunteering at a local school, and coaching
a variety of sports. Students worked in partnership with and in support of over 14 local and international organizations.
Several of the Grade 11 CAS projects this year have also been service-focussed: the RISE Festival by the Action For Refugees
Group, the 30 Hour Famine, and the Plastic Ocean Cleanup.
injuries plagued the team and effectively an 8-man squad played for
a 3rd place medal. HKA boys simply didn't have the manpower to put
up the fight that was required to medal this time around but they
fought to end - Spartans. Torn hamstrings, broken bones, a lot of
blood and sweat. A very hard earned 4th place for HKA boys.
