excellent presentation. They were finished to an
exceptionally high standard, fully deserving to be
winners of the Association’s coveted awards.
SDEA President, Angus Morton (of B Brown Display
At RetailEXPO, SDEA President Angus Morton
awarded the best stand accolade to CJ Retail
SDEA Director, Antony Behiels was delighted with the
interest that sparked among members during the
competition at both events was outstanding but the
two winner’s stands were sensational, carefully
thought out and original – also great credentials for
retail success. I would like to thank all our members
for taking part and supporting us.”
MEMBER NEWS
Jack Wills joined forced with CSM Retail to bring their 2019 Spring window
concept to fruition. The lifestyle brand, established 20 years ago in the
town of Salcombe, is now a global name in the retail industry with over 50
stores internationally and is widely acclaimed for its high-quality wardrobe
classics, which symbolise a youthful spirit and epitomise British popular
culture.
Following on from their previous collaboration with the brand, where CSM
Retail helped promote their characteristic British identity in their Christmas
window displays, the company were on hand to deliver their new Spring
window concept, in what is one of the most important seasons for retailers
globally.
CSM RETAIL BRING JACK WILLS’ SPRING
WINDOWS TO LIFE
This coastal lifestyle concept
compliments the new
collection and was produced
and delivered for over 150
windows across the
brand's portfolio in the UK,
Ireland, Hong Kong and
Singapore, including the
flagship London store in the
fashionable district of Soho.
Additionally, each store
window had a bespoke layout
to accommodate the unique
store design. For stores who
installed their own windows
scheme, CSM Retail designed
and provided step by step
window installation
guidelines.
Inspired by Sail Loft interiors and the fresh palette of Spring, the 'Break
Away' window campaign showcased bespoke hand painted Jack Wills
nautical flags, galvanised hanging systems and Rafa canvas banners. The
nautical symbolism of the campaign contributes to the “feel good” factor
of Spring, as it comes with positive connotations associated with the
ocean, the beach and the relaxing features of sailing.
Feedback from the client was overwhelmingly positive: “The Spring
windows look fantastic - thank you so much from all of us here at Jack
Wills.”
VIBRANT DISPLAYS HANDMADE IN BRITAIN
FOR ICONIC NEW YORK EXHIBIT
Stunning displays manufactured by Yorkshire-headquartered Leach have
been installed at the iconic Brooklyn Museum in New York.
An inspiring feminist character, Frida Kahlo’s exhibition is rich in colour.
The vivid pink and blue lightboxes – which inject the wow factor before
visitors have even stepped inside – have therefore been on the cards since
discussions with the museum’s curators began back in November.
Leach is part of Chargeurs Group – a global manufacturing and services
brand with a philanthropic Foundation committed to fostering intercultural
dialogue and access to culture, health and education. The collaboration
with Brooklyn Museum is therefore well-aligned with the organisation’s
worldwide mission.
Anne Pasternak, the Shelby White and Leon Levy Director at Brooklyn
Museum said: “We would like to thank Chargeurs for their generous
support of this vital exhibition. The stunning Leach-designed lightboxes at
the entry to our exhibition truly set the stage for a magnificent experience.”
Handmade more than 3,000 miles away at the design specialist’s
Huddersfield HQ, two ultra-illuminated lightboxes – each 3.4m wide and
2.5m tall – now welcome visitors to the Museum’s Frida Kahlo:
Appearances Can Be Deceiving exhibit.
This is the largest US exhibition – dedicated to this celebrated Mexican
artist – in 10 years, featuring paintings, photographs, film and personal
artefacts from her home. Given the prestigious scale of this showcase,
Leach has designed the displays to provide the public with an immersive
visual experience, from the moment they arrive.
Tom Foster, Project Director from Leach added: “We’ve worked on some
incredible heritage projects across the globe and adding the Brooklyn
Museum to our roster of clients is very exciting indeed.
“The Museum contains one of the nation’s most comprehensive and wideranging
collections, spanning 5,000 years of creativity from various
cultures worldwide, and it’s amazing to think that displays manufactured by
our own creative technicians now welcome visitors to this iconic venue.”
Frida Kahlo came to define herself through her ethnicity, disability, and
politics, all of which were at the heart of her work.
MEMBER FOCUS
1969 was a year packed with momentous
events; moon landings, Woodstock, the Beatles
last LP - and the founding of one of the UK’s
leading retail display specialist.
In the 50 years since, Wrights Plastics has outgrown three locations,
acquired several other businesses and expanded its manufacturing and
service offering to meet changing demands. But its commitment to UK
manufacturing remains unchanged and it has maintained investment in
technology and people to ensure it stays competitive in an increasingly
global market place.
Founded by brothers John and Vic Wright the company initially occupied
250 sq ft of premises in Aston, Birmingham. Expansion led to relocations
to Walsall and Willenhall. Today Wrights Plastics is a business with turnover
in excess of £10m with a West Bromwich manufacturing base occupying
over 46,000 sq feet and a further 9,000 sq foot of warehousing located
nearby. John’s son Mike Wright was appointed MD in 1994, and Mike’s
sons are also involved in the business. The workforce is now in excess of
100 and the site regularly operates round-the-clock to meet demand.
The company works across many sectors. Its fabricated parts can be found
in Land Rover vehicles, traffic lights and the leading commercial mowers.
WRIGHTS PLASTICS CELEBRATES
50TH ANNIVERSARY
The company has expanded their offering beyond manufacturing. Specialist
design teams help turn clients’ ideas into reality, and a logistics team
handle roll-outs across the UK & Europe. An expanded print & graphics
team uses some of the latest printers to produce print, signage, graphics,
decals and vehicle wraps. Project teams offer support from initial enquiry to
final dispatch – and beyond!
Investment in cutting-edge technology - supported by experienced
specialist teams - ensures the company is the leading name in precision
processes such as :
• vacuum forming
• drape moulding
• blow moulding
• CNC machining & routing
• laser profiling & cutting
• line bending
as well as a range of polishing, finishing and collation services.
Minimising the impact of their processes on the environment has become
an important factor in everything they do – and this will increase in
importance over the next 50 years. Inspired by Marks & Spencer’s Plan A
the company has achieved significant reductions in waste and energy use
and increases in the use of recycled materials.
From hospital cribs for new born babies to screens in space-age driverless
pods, Wrights Plastics has continued to design, develop and manufacture
innovative high quality parts for 100s of clients.
In the retail display sector, the company has become a leading brand with
services including bespoke POS / POP display solutions, off-the-shelf POS,
signage, graphics and branding. They work directly with clients such as
Marks & Spencer, Tesco, Selfridges, The Arcadia Group and partner with
leading retail design agencies such as dciArtform, Sigma Group, Shopworks
and PLB Group. Retail brand specialists such as Principle Global and POS
fabrication specialists such as Adglow use their retail display services.
Their 50th year has already been marked by many achievements:
A rebrand has seen new logos and a fresh look for all the brands within the
Wrights Plastics Group, including display specialist Mid West Displays
acquired in 2016 and off-the-shelf POS brand Wrights GPX added in 2008.
The Wrights GPX ecommerce website will be relaunched in summer 2019
and a bespoke furniture and homeware brand Love It. Own It. has been
launched to promote the company’s bestselling acrylic table ranges.
GEO - a new jewellery display range designed, developed and made inhouse
– has been launched.
A display showroom has been created to feature some of the company’s
latest innovative POS projects as well as celebrating the latest in design
trends and display tech to create a space for ideas and inspiration for the
team and clients
Further launches, events and updates are planned throughout the rest of
2019 which will be featured on the company website.
ORMISTON WIRE CREATE SILK MOTHS
FOR FAMOUS LONDON MARKET
Old Spitalfields Market is a covered market in the East End of London which
has existed for over 350 years.
To celebrate the market's rich history of silk weaving, 40 illuminated silk
moths have been installed in the Trade Market area at Crispin Place. Each
'silk moth' has been suspended at varying heights, to give visitors the
impression of a large group moving across the market; a symbol of how silk
weaving influenced the London East End industry. Each installation piece
changes colour throughout the day, mimicking silk moth metamorphosis.
Installers created a secure, overhead span by running high strength wire
rope between two fixing points, which was ideal for the application as there
were no direct vertical anchor points available. C-Clips allowed for the
suspension to be placed anywhere along the span, due to its innovative
twist on/off functionality, with the descending wire then connecting to the
moth using a Gripple XP1.
By choosing to use this method of installation, a discreet, floating effect has
been achieved to the utmost satifaction of the client, as the silk moths are
virtually invisible when lit up and viewed from below. The installer was also
able to achieve rapid installation times, thanks to the innovative design of
Gripple and Ormiston Wire products working in conjunction.
To achieve this ambitious art piece, installers opted to use Catenary Wire
from historic supplier Ormiston Wire, in conjunction with the Gripple
Dynamic 3, Dynamic 6, C-Clip and Express No. 1.
PROPABILITY & FLOURISH TRADING DELIVER
SPRING/SUMMER ACROSS FENWICK STORES
A gloriously bright and happy scheme that brings a vintage English
summer garden look and feel was delivered by Propability and sister
company Flourish Trading collaborating with the VM team at Fenwick.
Propability created shapes and bushes to be featured in this
characteristically British window scheme across nine Fenwick stores. In
total Propability created MDF shapes for 50 pyramid trees, 152 different
square and rectangular shapes, four large arches and 19 smaller arches
and used sister company Flourish Trading to supply the faux foliage.
Each window was filled with high quality artificial moss, foliage and topiary
which included approximately 10,000 panels of 100% botanically accurate
UV stable Buxus Hedge Topiary.
Propability fitted the windows at Newcastle, Bond Street, Bracknell, Brent
Cross and Kingston ensuring that the organic shapes and platforms were
positioned in the best possible way to correctly display the mannequins
and merchandise.
The juxtaposition of the topiary shapes alongside the floral patterns on the
merchandise contrast beautifully with the hand painted graphic backdrop
and floors to create a truly appealing visual treat.
The product was sourced specifically so that it would not fade or discolour
in the window. In addition, almost 350 high quality Topiary Moss panels
and 100 artificial Topiary Boxwood Balls in three different sizes (25cm,
40cm and 50cm) were also supplied by Flourish Trading to Propability for
the build.
DISPLAY DEVELOPMENTS INCREASE
PRODUCTION CAPACITY
Display Developments have recently purchased and installed a Geiss 5 Axis
CNC machine in their 22,000 sq ft production facility in Belvedere, SE
London.
The new machine will enable the company to significantly increase its
range of services, but specifically trim large vacuum formings quickly and
with significantly greater accuracy.
The machine has a 2000mm x 1000mm fixed table and a moving gantry.
This guarantees an extremely high level of stability and at the same time
keeps the floor space required to a minimum. The 6 Axis CNC Head
operates in a self-contained enclosure with a sophisticated extraction
system for swarf and dust.
Stephen Graham, Managing Director of Display Developments, believes
that the acquisition of this new machine proves that, despite current
economic uncertainties, there is a promising future for British
manufacturing as long as there is ongoing investment.
Display Developments are a leading UK fabricator and former of plastic
products, both bespoke Engineered Parts as well as Point Of Sale and
Display Units. In addition, they manufacture and distribute an extensive
range of standard display products to an extremely wide customer base.
RETAILEXPO ATTRACTS RECORD LEVELS OF
SENIOR RETAIL DECISION MAKERS
RetailEXPO, Europe’s leading
retail trade show, drew record
numbers of senior level retail
decision makers to the 2019
expo, with 81% of attendees
authorising or influencing
buying decisions for retail
solutions.
and meet the people who are driving them. The speeches, whether it's a
keynote speaker or it's the panels, is a great way to get the temperature of
the industry and what's happening. That’s exciting, inspiring as it gets the
juices flowing, and is thought provoking. It's a fantastic way to see and
learn what's new, and also address some of niggling questions or
challenges that we as retailers are facing.”
Insights from RetailEXPO’s post
show report, which analysed
data from the 12,676 across the two day show, held at London’s Olympia
on 1st and 2nd May 2019, revealed that 75% of attendees came from Tier
1 or 2 sized retailers. Similarly, almost a third (32%) of retail visitors had
store estates of 500 stores or more.
With a growing international audience, the show attracted visitors from 78
different countries globally across key retail sectors. A fifth of the show’s
audience (19%) was comprised of fashion, footwear and jewellery
retailers, while one in eight (12%) of the retail businesses visiting the show
were from the grocery sector. Other key retail verticals attending the show
included general merchandise (10%); pure plays (9%); DIY, home
furnishing and garden retail businesses (7%); specialist retailers (7%); and
health and beauty businesses (6%).
The reinvigorated conference programme proved a key drawn from
RetailEXPO’s retail audiences, with over a third (34%) saying their primary
reason for visiting was to gain industry knowledge and learning though
talks and presentations. The new conference programme saw six streams
of insightful content, presented by leading retailers including Lego, Virgin
Holidays, Naked Wines, Mamas and Papas and Asda, with keynote
sessions from Justin King, CBE and ex-CEO of Sainsbury’s, and Helen
Dickinson, CEO at the British Retail Consortium.
Commenting on the role of RetailEXPO, Justin King said: “[RetailEXPO is an
opportunity for] real people to meet with real people to discuss the change
that's taking place. I think that's fantastic. We spend a lot of time talking
about how everyone's going to go online and only use technology, and yet
when we want to get together to discuss change, we do it real time, face-to
-face. This is where you're going to find the ideas, the opportunities, to
cope with whatever the particular change is that's facing your retail
business.”
Simone Sweeney, Vice President Retail Development at The LEGO Group,
added: “At RetailEXPO I’m here to see the latest technologies, solutions,
Another key draw for a further 32% of retailers attending RetailEXPO 2019
was the depth and breadth of retail solutions being exhibited. With over
341 exhibitors from technology, digital signage and retail design vendors
from payments companies, like Klana, Verifone and Sage, to CX solutions
including HP, Cybertill and Cegid, and signage solutions from Samsung
through to start-ups including NearSt and Dotaki.
Andy Murray, Chief Customer Officer at Asda, commented: “RetailEXPO is
where a lot of innovations happen, it's at the forefront of change. You can
see it by walking the floors. The technology's happening, the digital
screens and all the new stuff that's happening. Technology is the name of
the game. And it's the highest level of that at this show that you get to
see.”
Nat Kingswell, Head of Shopper Marketing & Grocery at Britvic, added:
“There's lots of companies here that are bringing new ideas to the market.
It's really important to meet new people and to network, to meet people
that are going to help us deliver better campaigns for our brands, things
that we haven't thought of before and see what's out there and what's
coming in the future, so we can be ahead of the trend! RetailEXPO is a
great opportunity for us to meet new people, find out more about new
technologies, and how we can evolve our campaigns and bring more
exciting stuff to in-store and point of purchase.”
Matt Bradley, Event Director for RetailEXPO, concluded: “We’re delighted
with the success of RetailEXPO in its new unified show format. We set out
to deliver a retail trade event that delivered a single source of ideas and
holistic solutions to energise retailers now and in the future – and we feel
we’ve done just this, from the breadth of innovation on display to the new
conference stream and other show features. Exhibitor satisfaction scores
have risen 16% year-on-year, which is testament to our commitment to
delivering a show that truly matches the needs of the retail industry.”
