We stood up for patients…
In April, we traveled to Sacramento to
hold a press conference with Senator
Leyva, emceed by our Union’s Vice
President Kathy Montanino, an RN at
Riverside Community Hospital. Watch it
In 2018, we
continued to
stand together in our fight
for patient safety.
On February 16, 2018, State Senator Connie M. Leyva (D–Chino) introduced an important bill
that we helped her write. The “Stop Repeat Offender Hospitals” bill, SB 1288, was designed
to protect patients by fining hospitals that constantly put our patients’ care in danger. In
some ways, California leads the way. We are the only state with mandated minimum nurseto-patient
ratios required at all times for every hospital unit. But as we know, there’s little
enforcement of these regulations. We made phone calls. We were part of lobby visits.
Many of us testified at hearings. Hundreds of us sent postcards to the Governor and to
the California Department of Public Health. We successfully got the bill all the way to the
Governor’s desk for his signature. Governor Brown’s veto statement clearly showed that he
was influenced by hospital administrators. Here’s the good news: RNs don’t give up easily.
