Brilliant books to keep you busy this month
Painful. Honest. Utterly heartbreaking.
You’ll read every page of Get Me to
21– all 436 of them – with your heart
in your mouth. It’s Gabi Lowe’s
agonizing, courageous story about
trying to save the life of her daughter.
Jenna – who became the face of
organ donors in South Africa with her
#GeMeTo21 campaign – was young,
bright, articulate ... and had a rare,
degenerative lung disease. Pulmonary
arterial hypertension finally took her life
in June 2015 ... four months before her
21st birthday. An extraordinary tribute
to an extraordinary young girl, written
by a brave mother who hopes the
book will help others facing loss, pain,
challenges and adversity. MFBooks/
Jacana, R265.
Jessica Pan was an unhappy introvert.
She wasn’t, she’s quick to point out,
unhappy because she was an introvert.
But she needed to do something about
the depression she was sinking into.
When she found herself in a sauna
– weeping, clutching a copy of Men’s
Health, ‘dressed as an assassin, reading a
guide to 8-minute abs’ and screaming
profanities at a spa employee, all to
win a free gym contract, she knew
something had to change. What would
it be like if, for one year, she lived as an
extrovert? Knowingly, willingly putting
herself in perilous social situations ....
those she’d usually avoid at all costs?
Sorry I’m Late - I Didn’t Want to Come
is Jess’ story of this painful, hilarious year.
Penguin, R320.
Also well worth reading ...
Having two autistic children is every parent’s nightmare. Saving My Sons is Ilana
Gerschlowitz’s story, told with Marion Scher, of her determination to find a way to
help her sons ... Her tenacity bore fruit in the form of answers from international
experts and she has gone on to greatly improve the lives of her own two boys
as well as to help countless children facing learning challenges. Essentially, she
discovered that autism is a treatable illness and that early intervention is vital.
BookStorm, R320.
Steph is a federal agent ... one who
knows her job. She knows how to
interview people, and how to tell when
they’re lying. So when she finds a gun
in Zachary, her teenage son’s room, and
finds out he’s been in contact with a
terrorist group via email, she questions
him, and is convinced he’s telling the
truth that he has no idea about what’s
going on. But who, then, is setting up
her son? And why? Or is she just being
a typical mum and not seeing the truth
about her son? Keep You Close will
keep you guessing ... a chilling read by
Karen Cleveland. Penguin, R290.
Another thriller for October ...
Megan Miranda’s The Last House
Guest keeps you on the edge of
your seat from the very first page.
Alternating between the summers of
2017 – when a young woman is found
dead on the beach while her friends
are celebrating at an end-of-summer
house party – and 2019, when her best
friend is still not convinced the death
was an accident, this is a chilling thriller
– with a wicked twist! Corvus, R313.
Drink wine … support the ellies!
Balance, the quirky range of generous, everyday wines, has been relaunched after a stylish makeover
… and besides looking (and tasting) good, also supports desert elephant conservation. With Hank the
elephant as the wine’s mascot, Balance has adopted the Elephant Human Relations Aid (EHRA) as a CSI
initiative. For every bottle sold, a contribution is made to fund the EHRA PEACE project, an educational
programme promoting the peaceful cohabitation of local communities with desert elephants in
Southern Africa. The PEACE project empowers people living in close proximity to wild elephants with
the necessary information to keep themselves, their families and livestock safe during elephant visits.
Taking the conservation of desert elephants even further, the wine’s packaging uses digital
technology linked to an exciting online game to support this initiative. You can win Balance Bucks to
buy more wine, and every time you complete a final stage of the game, a donation is made on your
behalf. The affordable Classic range includes an easy-drinking Cabernet Sauvignon/ Merlot, a crisp
Sauvignon Blanc and a delicately sweet Rosé, while the Balance Winemaker’s Selection range has six
single varietal wines, including a lightly wooded Chardonnay, a fruity Pinot Grigio and an elegant Pinot
Noir. Available from your local bottle store or online, the wines cost from R47 for the Classic range, R62
for the Winemaker’s Selection white wines and R67 for the reds. To win Balance Bucks and support the
conservation of desert elephants, the Balance game can be played directly online at https://balance.
wine. The game can also be accessed through a QR code found on Balance wine bottles. So play away,
and then redeem your Balance Bucks with another bottle from https://shop.overhex.com/collections/
She’s witty, stylish, makes her own sauces and we can listen to her voice for hours.
Philicity Reeken of Allen’s Nek chats about her career in radio, the dating scene and
staying beautiful beyond 40.
T
here is really nothing
Philicity can’t do.
She is a radio
presenter, talented
actress, singer,
incredible mom,
cook, and a booming
businesswoman.
Her latest venture is keeping listeners
entertained on the Scenic Drive on
Jacaranda FM for the past three
months. Before that, she co-hosted
the 947 Breakfast Xpress for four
years. You may also know her from
Isidingo, Scandal, Song vir Katryn, Jozi
H, Binnelanders, Great Expectations,
Coconuts, and Survivor South Africa: The
Maldives in 2011.
A natural comedian, Philicity was
bound to captivate crowds with her
witty sense of humour. She wanted to
be in the entertainment industry her
whole life but her career only took off
after she became a mother.
‘I was only seven years old when I fell
in love with acting and I was lucky
enough to attend an art school where
I studied acting. I thought I was very
smart when I was 17 and quit school,
got a waitress job and started my
short-lived singing career. When I got
married, I left the industry to become
a mom, but that wasn’t the life for me.
My daughter was about a year old
when I called an agent again and just
like that I got the role in Isidingo that
changed my life.’
She is now the mother of two teenage
daughters and can always depend on
her own mother. Philicity was a very
difficult teenager, and is very thankful
that her own daughters didn’t inherit
her temper and teenage tantrums.
‘I’m so blessed to have two angels
as my daughters. They are smart,
independent and very mature. They
know that no matter what happens
in life, you should always look on the
bright side and laugh about it. That’s
my philosophy in life – there’s a time
and a place for everything, but never
stop laughing.
‘I have an appreciation for all forms
of art. When I was in art school, I was
exposed to so many different types
of art and I feel inspired by all of them.
When I was little, I used to read a lot,
and that cultivated my imagination.
Creating art is a form of freedom.’
Philicity has recently worked on a
digital project called Deur die Blare that
won first place in its category at the
kykNET Silwerskermfees. When she’s not
making waves on the radio or screen,
she spends her time in the kitchen
or in her herb garden, perfecting her
range of sauces.
‘I was going through a tough spot
financially a while back and I had to
get a new source of income. I love
cooking and I love sauces, so I thought
why not make my own sauces. Phil’s
Saucy Sauces has been a big hit ever
since. I make all the sauces myself,
using ingredients from my garden and
I sell them on markets. These sauces
are very creamy and luxurious, and
every foodie's dream.’
When Philicity sets her mind to
something, she does everything in her
power to realise her goals. That’s what
makes her successful in all aspects of
her life.
‘Going forward, I want to do charity
work, bringing young and old
together. We have elderly people with
tons of wisdom in old age homes and
we have children that don’t get the
attention or intellectual stimulation
they need. Why not bring these two
together? The older generation has
a lot to teach the young ones and in
turn, they can teach the elderly people
a lot about life too and keep them
young at heart.’
In between everything Philicity travels
a lot (we wonder if she ever sleeps).
She is lucky that her job gives her the
chance to travel and she always grabs
these opportunities with both hands,
taking in the beautiful sights
of new cities and getting to know
other cultures.
‘Don’t even get me started on the food
… I love experiencing new flavours. I
still want to travel the world with my
daughters. I want to see Africa because
we live on this beautiful continent, but
rarely visit the beautiful places on our
own doorstep. I want to see Zambia,
Mozambique and Morocco one day.’
Philicity has been divorced for quite
some time and is yet to find someone
she can share her dreams with. She
says that the struggle is real
and that the dating scene brings
many challenges.
‘I want to ask Joburg men to try harder
when it comes to women. I’ve tried
Tinder and all that dating apps and
websites, but they don’t work for me. I
don’t want to message ten guys a day
and talk about how their day is going.
I have friends for that and I don’t need
more friends. I feel that it’s about
quantity and not quality anymore. I
want someone to laugh and eat with.
I’m looking for someone who can carry
me through hard times and someone I
can carry as well.’
Like her personality, Philicity’s style is
very quirky. ‘I love to dress according to
themes. Some days I wake up and feel
like an inspector or an art curator, and
then I’ll dress the part. I love dressing
up because I love who I am. I’m at a
place in my life where I like my body
and I don’t want to hide it from the
world. I’ll dress how I want.’
October is her birth month, so she
confessed that her beauty secret for
looking fabulous at 40 is good genes
and a lot of smiling.
‘Don't deprive yourself. Eat and drink
what you want. Dress as you want and
follow your dreams! Depriving yourself
won’t make you live any longer.’
Philicity in short:
What sauce are you? I’m a combination of my own garlic sauce, green
Tabasco and a bit of hot chilli for that extra kick.
If you could go back in time, what message would you give yourself? I’d
tell myself to do everything the same.
Who is your celebrity crush? I’m inspired by a lot of people, but I’d die if I
heard Vin Diesel saying my name (won’t we all?).
Our race
SUPERSTAR
She’s smart, ready for fun and amped for the SPAR Women’s Challenge. Meet our
Face of the Race winner, graphic designer and super mom, Sarah Ayres!
1. HOW DID IT ALL START?
We have a very active German shorthaired
pointer, which needs plenty of
exercise … I started off by going for
walks with him, and eventually I started
running. Within a few months, I’d fallen
in love with the sport. Once you get
past the initial shock of a change in your
routine, the new routine feeds your
soul. Plus, the endorphins I get from
running improve my mood and keep me
focused. I also started a WhatsApp group
to encourage other young mothers to
get out and about. Initially, it was just a
couple of other moms from the school,
but the group has grown and we now
have 50 members. We exchange tips and
encourage each other to keep going.
They are not all young mothers – we are
available for anyone who is just starting
to get regular exercise.
2. HAVE YOU DONE THE SPAR WOMEN’S
RACE BEFORE?
Nope, this will be my first year and I’m
excited to make it an annual event on my
race calendar! My dad will run with me,
and my mom is going to walk the 5km
Fun Run. Quite a few of my friends will
also be taking part.
3. TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY …
I am married and we have two children, a
six-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl.
We both run small businesses from home
so we’re privileged to be able to spend a
lot of time together and with
our children.
4. WHAT’S YOUR ULTIMATE SMOOTHIE
RECIPE FOR ENERGY?
Banana must be in whatever smoothie
you make! I love mixing bananas,
strawberries and other berries, and even
adding in some pawpaw and pineapple.
5. WHAT’S THE BEST MEAL TO HAVE FOR
DINNER BEFORE A RACE?
I’m a fan of carbo-loading before a race
and like to have pasta or pizza (glutenfree
of course!) the night before a race or
a long run.
6. HOW DO YOU PREPARE YOURSELF
MENTALLY ON RACE DAY?
I know that I can run a certain distance in
training so I just tell myself that I can run
a race (normally further than my training
distances) easily because the only thing
that’s changing is that I have more time
on race day.
7. WHAT OTHER FORMS OF TRAINING
DO YOU ENJOY?
I enjoy walking or hiking with my family
and our dogs, and I like to counter the
intensity of running with a calming
stretch routine mixed with Pilates
and Yoga.
8. YOUR BEST-KEPT HEALTH SECRET?
I eat three cooked meals and at least
three snacks a day! I love food and try to
keep it as healthy as possible to fuel my
body without needing supplements.
9. HOW OFTEN DO YOU RUN?
At present, I run three to four kilometres
three times a week
10. FAVE ACTIVE WEAR?
I can’t do without my trail shoes; the
stability they provide makes my run
a breeze.
11. HOW WOULD YOUR FRIENDS
DESCRIBE YOU?
I am a strict perfectionist with a strong
moral compass and a sense of justice. I
love to help others and motivate them
through a positive lifestyle and an open,
unjudgmental countenance. My family is
my centre and my motivation.
12. WHAT REALITY TV SHOW WOULD
YOU TRY?
I’m quite a fan of Survivor South Africa
and keep thinking about how I would
have handled a certain situation or how I
would cope with the challenges and the
cunning that the game requires. Also, the
lack of food!
13. WHAT ARE THE LAST FOUR ITEMS
YOU BOUGHT?
All food items: milk, fruit, veggies,
and yoghurt.
14. WHAT IS THE MOST ADVENTUROUS
THING YOU’VE DONE AND IS THERE
ANYTHING YOU STILL WANT TO DO?
I jumped off a 10m high rock into a clear
rock pool on a hike in the Wolweberg. I
still want to go somewhere completely
different from home – like Norway! There
are some incredible hot springs on a
glacier in Iceland that look like they need
exploring too …
15. ATHLETE YOU LOOK UP TO?
Not famous … but my mom! She took
up exercise after my sisters and I were
already in school (about the same age I
am now) and she hasn’t stopped since.
She’s now 60 and she still mountainbikes
a distance of about 30km almost
every day. She’s strong and determined
and unchangeable.
16. HOW IMPORTANT IS WINNING?
Winning is about 5 per cent of anything
I do. Being able to compete at a certain
level means you’re already good enough,
the rest is up to chance and/or vote,
which are factors outside of your control.
I do things for me first and with my
family in mind. If I am good enough to
win, that’s just incredible!
17. YOUR BIGGEST RACE TO DATE?
My first fun run was a 5km charity run for
Slipper Day at a park near where I live.
Since then I’ve taken part in only one
other event – a 4km fun run on Women’s
Day, organised by Families South Africa.
HEALTH MATTERS
Survive the last stretch until the holidays with these health tips!
HEALTH HACKS
A healthy body harbours a healthy mind
and as the saying goes, you are what
you eat. Unfortunately, most of us have
unhealthy eating habits we can’t break.
Drink water in a different way – We
all know that drinking enough water
has many benefits, but by following
the simple rule of not drinking water
(or anything else) 90 minutes before
and after each meal, will fuel your
digestive fire, hydrate you properly
and assist your body to absorb
nutrients optimally by not diluting
your digestive juices. Remember
to drink enough water outside of
these times.
Spice up your life – Use herbs and
spices such as fennel, celery seed
and cumin for improved digestion.
Adding a combination of turmeric,
black pepper and ginger can assist in
fighting inflammation too.
Keep well-oiled – Olive oil
is known as a healthy fat,
but it becomes toxic when
heated beyond its smoke
point. Rather drizzle it
over your salad or use it in
homemade pestos, dipping
sauces and guacamole.
Collagen keeps you beautiful –
Gelatin is a great way to provide
your body with more collagen, and
it’s more affordable than hydrolysed
collagen. You can make the most
delicious gelatin desserts or you can
add it to stews to thicken them and
add some extra nutritional benefit
for healthy skin and hair, as well as to
assist in healing a leaky gut.
Three health hacks by
Dr Bianca De Canha:
1
Using homeopathy first,
particularly against viral infections
where antibiotics are powerless,
has been shown in numerous
studies to be effective and as such
reduce the necessity for antibiotics,
without complications. Homeopathy
is safe and effective, and is suitable for
young and old, in pregnancy, for those
breastfeeding and in infancy.
Guard your gut – Protecting your
gut can be the first line of defence
to prevent a variety of diseases,
such as metabolic disorders,
depression and eczema. Make sure
to supplement daily with a broadspectrum
probiotic and prebiotic to
ensure you a CFU (colony forming
unit) of at least 10 billion CFUs.
Don’t forget vitamin D3 – The
perception is that living in sunny
South Africa assures you high
vitamin D levels; however, the
shocking truth is that we are
mostly deficient thanks to highfactor
sunscreens, less than optimal
diets and a lifestyle that confines us
to the indoors. Vitamin D is not only
essential for bone health and teeth,
but has a vital role in gut health,
mood, hormone production as well as
supporting a healthy immune system.
2
3
Veggies for the win – Eating an
abundance and variety of vegetables
is fundamental to good health. Using
frozen veggies is an easy way to
include more veggies in your diet as
it will save you peeling and chopping
time, but also ensures a high
nutritional value as vegetables headed
for the frozen market are harvested
when they are perfectly ripe, as
opposed to the ‘almost-ready’ veggies
available on the fresh-produce market.
IV infusions: The body-boosting trend!
If you hate needles, you probably stay far away from them unless they are necessary
to save your life. Nowadays, however, people are subjecting themselves increasingly
to needles by choice – thanks to the availability of intravenous (IV) vitamins that are
gaining popularity by the day.
What are they? The infusion treatments target a variety of wellness needs by
replenishing hydration, aiding recovery from illness or jet lag, providing hangover
relief and restoring vitamin and nutrient levels, while refreshing cosmetic
appearance and revitalising overall well-being.
Need to know: A consultation with a medical doctor is essential before any IV
infusions to rule out any liver, kidney or heart disease. High-risk patients with
epilepsy, diabetes, sickle-cell disease or cancer also need to be identified
by your attending doctor. Ask yourself the following: Is the place that you
visit
safe? Do they have all the medical equipment and training as per the
standards required by the Department of Health?
Get
your IV infusions done at Skin Renewal West Rand, situated at Town
Avoid burnout at work
This time of the year you might
experience low energy during the
workday, a loss of interest in your
work, and irritability with colleagues
or team members. These are typical
signs of burnout. Burnouts can lead
to low productivity, high absenteeism,
low creativity, and even health
problems which is why it's better
to avoid burnout before it harms
your career.
Follow these tips to avoid burnout:
1. Work with purpose.
2. Perform a job analysis, and
eliminate or delegate unnecessary
work.
3. Take control, and actively manage
your time.
4. Get more exercise.
5. Learn how to manage stress.
Try this!
Aesthetic glitter bottles ...
In a transparent bottle, just add
water and glue in an 80–20
ratio. (You can use soapy water
instead of glue.) Then add a lot
of glitter! You can twirl the bottle
or tilt it upside down! Seeing the
glitter flow calms people down.
This is one of the easiest hacks
out there and many people
suffering from anxiety have
claimed that this helps.
CAKE is his art
Rant-en-Dal’s pastry chef, Marcel Duvenhage, can work magic with cakes but
he also has a love for writing and funky socks. We chat to him about his talents
inside and outside the kitchen.
Marcel was drawn into this industry when he used to help
his grandmother and his aunt bake and decorate cakes
when he was only a child. He shared with us that their cakes
were immaculate and always looked like they could be
photographed and used in magazine articles.
'I remember licking the beater when
we were done. That's something I won't
ever forget. I guess that's what sparked
my career as a pastry chef.’
Straight out of high school, he stepped
into the kitchen to kick off his career as
a chef, but he realised that same day
that cooking wasn't for him – baking is
his real passion.
Without any formal training or
qualifications, Marcel started A Taste of
Heaven Cakery in 2016, not knowing
it would be so successful that his
creations would someday be
featured on TV.
'I did a few short courses to learn the
basics. I figured the rest out by myself.
Running a business isn't easy but if
it's what you really want to do, you make it work.'
He takes his career very seriously and all his hard work finally
started paying off when his cakes were recently featured on
Ster-Status, a reality TV show on Via ...
I love what I do. I
can create something
that people
will remember
forever, plus I get to
eat a lot of cake.
A couple of years ago, he joined forces with a local coffee
shop owner who is now his partner in the business.
'My favourite part of this job is decorating. I'm not very
patient so I'm not a fan of the timely process of baking, and
don't get me started on the cleaning-up part ... When I have
decorated a cake and take a step back and look at the big
picture, the waiting and the hard work that go into the little
details are worth it.'
For Marcel, the most important aspect of a cake is how it
tastes. His secret to creating memorable cakes is not only
in the decorations but in the unique combinations that he
uses to make the cake taste even better than it looks.
'My mom always said you should not play with food, but
when you are a pastry chef, you have to. I play with flavours
and textures.'
When Marcel isn't busy with his fabulous creations, he
does decor and flowers for functions – and he's also in the
process of writing two books.
'I'm a very creative person. I'm busy with
a very personal book about bullying and
I'm also writing my own biographical
cookbook. I'm very arty, so I always
wear crazy, colourful socks to express that
side of me.'
Marcel's friends and family are very dear
to him and they each play a different
role in his life.
'Some may call me passionate and careerdriven,
while others say I am their guardian
angel and that I am a brave warrior. I take
the lead and I'm not afraid of going for
what I want or protecting what I have in
both my career and my personal life.'
When his creative juices are flowing
and he designs a cake, he decorates his
masterpieces with ruffles, sugar roses and
his beloved piping technique. Marcel says that it's a very
challenging industry to work in because trends change
continuously, but he wouldn't change it for anything.
'I love what I do. I can create something that people will
remember forever, plus I get to eat a lot of cake.'
Going forward, Marcel wants to teach adults and children
the art of baking and decorating.
Quick facts about Marcel:
• What is your guilty pleasure? Milkshakes,
• If you could be any animal, what would you be?
Definitely a wolf — I’m a leader but I’m also fearless and
• Which tool would you use for cake decoration if
you had to use only one for the rest of your life? You
can do a lot with a ball tool.
• Who do you want to bake a cake for? I have a
Ciabatta Bread with edible flowers,
sundried tomatoes, and rosemary
INGREDIENTS:
Edible flower petals; sundried tomatoes; rosemary.
Sponge: 350ml warm water; 350g white bread flour; 5g
instant yeast.
Dough: 450ml warm water; 450g white bread flour; 5g
instant yeast; 10g salt.
METHOD:
Heat the oven to 220°C.
Sponge: Combine ingredients with a metal spoon
until they form a sloppy, sticky sponge. Cover with
cling wrap and leave to ferment overnight in a
warm area.
Dough: Combine flour, yeast, sponge, and salt. Mix
on low speed until combined and slowly add water,
gradually increasing speed. Mix the dough until it
comes clean off the sides. The dough will be very
sloppy and will look jelly-like.
Grease a large bowl, place dough in the bowl and
cover with cling wrap to prove for 15 minutes. Fold
dough four times before letting it prove again for 15
minutes. Repeat this step four times, adding the flower
petals, sundried tomatoes and rosemary while folding
the dough the last time.
Dust a baking tray and the work surface with flour.
Remove the dough from the bowl, place on the work
surface and portion it into three slipper-shaped pieces.
Be careful not to damage the delicate bubble structure
of the dough.
Place on the baking tray and bake for 20 minutes or
until crispy and golden brown.
Rebecca and Kate Lund, aka The Delish Sisters, are constantly inspired by the
everchanging food industry and love to create beautiful food experiences for
clients, friends and family. They enjoy experimenting with new and exotic spices
and ingredients, and encouraging people to be adventurous, too! The recipes
in their book are fresh, wholesome, colourful, seasonal and ‘mostly’ healthy ... so
while there are indulgent dishes and treats, they keep everything as balanced
and as inclusive as possible ... so also loads of sugar-free, gluten-free recipes,
delicious vegetarian options and tasty vegan food. Penguin, R300 .
In Summer Food, chef Tjaart Walraven
celebrates the long, lazy days of
our South African summer. With
the emphasis on easy entertaining
– including outdoor cooking – he
includes everything from great
breakfast dishes to kick off the day
to sweet desserts to end it. Loads of
background stories, great photos and
plenty of tips ... we love summer, and
we love this cookbook. Penguin, R350.
With an explosion of colour and
taste, Jamie Oliver shows just
how tasty veggie meals can be.
The recipes in VEG will, he says,
leave you feeling full, satisfied
and happy – and not missing
meat from your plate. From
simple suppers and family faves
to weekend dishes for sharing
with friends, from embracing
a meat-free day each week to
living a vegetarian lifestyle, or
for those simply just wanting to
try some brilliant new flavour
combos, VEG has something for
everyone ... and it’s crammed
with Jamie-style tips and tricks
that will excite the taste buds.
‘It’s all about celebrating really
good, tasty food that just
happens to be meat-free,’ he
said. Penguin, R430.
If you, like us, relish the Mediterranean
way of eating ... everyone tucking into
breads and dips, tapas and salads,
gorgeous roasts and seafoods ... you’re
going to want to get a copy of the
gorgeous – GORGEOUS, we tell you
– Cape Mediterranean by Ilse van
der Merwe. This Stellenbosch-based
foodie says, ‘In South Africa, especially
the Western Cape, we love the culture
of lingering, social lunch tables. We
savour coming together to celebrate
local, seasonal and sustainable
ingredients’. Fortunately you don’t
have to live in the Cape to make,
and enjoy, the dishes in her book ...
Winelands grape pizza bianca with
feta and thyme will taste just as good
in Ballito, Bo-Kaap harissa paste will be
yummy in Bloem, and Cape seafood
stew will go down a treat in Sandton.
There are more than 75 amazing
recipes that most of us will manage
with ease. There are recipes here we’ll
make again and again ... this is without
a doubt our hot buy for spring and
summer. Struik, R280.
Garden fever
We’ve put together our top garden tasks and tips for the month.
We’re planting …
Regal pelargonium ‘Novita’ for
its knockout colours and neat,
bushy growth. It looks good
anywhere; in large containers, in
coastal gardens, and the garden
in full sun or semi-shade. It
doesn’t get leggy like older
varieties used to do and it is
a great bloomer. The colour
range is purple, violet, dark
red with a purple eye and
a pink bicolour. The
medium-sized flowers
cover the bush. Plant
in well-drained fertile
soil and protect from
the frost in colder areas.
Garden plants need regular watering
but allow the soil to dry out before
watering again. Plants in containers
need watering more often. Fertilise
monthly with Vigorosa fertiliser.
Details: www.ballstraathof.co.za.
Garden tasks:
• Plant summer colour. Annuals that grow quickly and easily from seed are alyssum, cosmos, lavatera, portulaca, California
poppy, and nasturtium. They all do best in full sun. • Trim back invasive groundcovers to give other plants room to grow.
• Renew containers. Replace the potting soil and fill with summer annuals, trailing groundcovers or grasses. • Fertilise
perennials with Vigorosa or granular fertiliser 3:1:5 or 5:1:5, and annuals with a liquid fertiliser. Use either pink or blue
hydrangea food for hydrangeas. • Water regularly and spread a layer of mulch over beds to conserve water and keep the
roots cool. • Mow lawns at least once a week, but if it is very hot and dry, mow less frequently and set blades higher.
Garden Day!
There’s nothing like the joy of gardening. Connecting to nature, the
pride of growing your own plants, flowers, food and of course, the
amazing health benefits. It’s also been said that gardens, no matter
how big or small, have the potential to bring people together, which
is why on Sunday, 20 October you should down tools, and invite
neighbours, friends and family round to celebrate Garden Day.
Some ideas:
• Use fresh flowers and greenery from your garden to make flower
crowns for everyone. • Invite friends for a bring ’n’ braai – use herbs
from the garden to flavour their meat. • Instead of a book club, have a
plant club. Ask guests to bring a rare or interesting plant to swap with
one of the other guests. • If you don’t have a garden, visit someone
who does and enjoy it with them.
Perfect for patios …
Snack-sized sweet orange peppers are easy to
grow in pots on the patio or a sunny windowsill.
‘Sweet Snack’ pot peppers produce loads of
crunchy, delicious fruit, about 25 to 30 fruits in
two flushes. It’s a healthy snack for kids and good
for chopping into salads, platters and stir-fries.
The more you pick, the better they produce. The
plants are just as pretty and stay compact (50cm
high). They just need regular watering, plant food
once a week and a warm, sunny spot. Details:
A gem
at the coast
We’re fussy travellers ... and have a long list of
non-negotiables when we travel for business or
pleasure. And in Umhlanga’s The Capital Pearls,
we’ve found a real gem (see what we did there!).
It has everything, and we mean everything, we
need. There’s a selection of rooms depending
on when we visit and who we’re travelling
with (from studios when we’re there alone
for a day or two doing business, through to
between one and four bedroom apartments
when we’re with the whole family shebang ...
think noisy grandkids and tired in-laws). You can
eat in (there’s 24-hour in-room dining, and the
apartments have fully equipped kitchens) or
pop downstairs and within a stone’s throw you’ll
find dozens of restaurants for all tastes. There’s a
kids’ play area, complimentary entrance to Planet
Fitness (work off that breakfast!), and (be still my
beating heart) more than 60 shops in The Pearls
Mall. And so, so much more. Splashed champers
on your evening dress? ... a laundry service. Kids
want to go back to the beach? ... a comp shuttle
service within a five km radius. An urgent work
mail? ... high-speed Wi-Fi. Add a resort pool, a
pool deck and bar, and Indian Ocean views
to take your breath away and you’ve got the
(postcard) picture. Rates obviously vary hugely
depending on type of room and time of visit.
