Reports say that each month more than 200,000 adults go without speaking to a friend or a relative.
Watch schemes supported by us since 1987 have always been about building friendly, safe and
active communities where neighbours look out for each other
Just by giving a little of your time you can help reassure people who are older and or vulnerable,
especially if they live alone.
Social isolation is by far the biggest factor affecting the health and wellbeing of
many people who use our services and we find that some older people find it difficult
for reasons such as ill health, lack of mobility and transport, to ask for help. If you
have a hunch that an older person may be having difficulties and you haven’t seen
them out and about, don’t walk away, see if they need help, you could be saving a life.
What is Neighbourhood Watch?
Neighbourhood Watch is about you and your neighbours, coming together to have a say in the issues that
matter to you in your community.
There are clear benefits to joining a neighbourhood watch scheme for you and your local community:

It shows that members of a community are looking out for each other.
It keeps you up to date with what’s going on in your area.
It helps to prevent and tackle crime.
Neighbourhood Watch schemes are community initiatives owned and run by their members with
support from the Police. Contact us for details or register for alerts via www.owl.co.uk
Ageing is a natural part of life's cycle and many people stay fit and healthy as they grow
older. However some older people have specific problems relating to social isolation and
poor health and they may need you to assist them or to look out for them at times when
they are vulnerable.
When you have older people living close to you, it can be a good idea to check to see if
they need anything from time to time especially in bad weather.
THINGS YOU CAN DO FOR AN OLDER FRIEND OR NEIGHBOUR.
• There may be relatively simple tasks that an older person living near you is no longer
able to do on their own. Jobs like changing a light bulb, mowing the lawn or some
basic DIY may be things you can help with.
When you are next going shopping or into town, ask if there's anything they'd like you
to fetch while you're there. If you know they find it difficult to leave the house, you
might offer to run a few errands for them. Find out if they need regular medication
and if they have enough supplies to last a cold snap. Offer to pick up prescriptions if
necessary, or make arrangements with a local pharmacy.
• Notice any regular visitors. If family live far away and they don't leave the house
much, they may appreciate someone dropping in once every so often for some
company. You might offer to cook them dinner once a week, or simply
pop in for a cup of tea.
LOOK OUT FOR SIGNS THAT SOMETHING MAY BE WRONG.
• Do their lights come once it’s dark? Do the curtains get drawn? Is the garden tended?
There may be an accumulation of mail under their door or more milk bottles than normal
on their door step. If you have any reason to suspect that your neighbour might be in
need of help, knock on the door to check that they are OK.
• If you think that your older neighbour might need medical help, see if you can contact a
family member, their GP or even emergency services if there’s been a fall or they are ill.

If you’re visiting and their house feels cold, make sure that they have a blanket or rug they can
use to keep warm if they are frightened of using too much fuel. If not, try to encourage them
to wear a dressing gown, or a ‘blanket’ style all-in-one to keep warm while they are sitting
around the house.
• If it’s icy or snowing, clear their paths. Many older people are very frightened about
walking on slippery paths. You could also ask if they have enough milk, bread and supplies
to last them through a spell of bad weather.
IF YOU HAVE CONCERNS AND YOU THINK AN OLDER PERSON MAY NEED SUPPORT.
• You can encourage them to seek help from both statutory and voluntary organisations,
for example by giving them numbers or helping them contact local Social Services;
local branches of Age Connects ( North Wales Central covering Conwy and Denbigh and
North East Wales covering Flintshire and Wrexham); or Age Cymru covering Gwynedd and
Mon; or their local Voluntary Services Councils, in local county areas, who keep lists of all
local Charities that offer help with issues such as loneliness , isolation, bereavement and
poor physical or mental health. Many voluntary sector organisations provide befriending
or counselling services, help with jobs around the house, local clubs and group meetings,
IT lessons and general information, advice and support.
WHEN TO RAISE THE ALARM.
• If you are seriously concerned for your neighbour's well-being and suspect that they
may be ill or injured and unable to summon help, then please ring the police or ambulance
service.
DOORSTEP COLD CALLERS
We would like to remind residents that purchasing or using the services of cold
callers can be risky for numerous reasons. If something goes wrong with the
service, or product, they may prove difficult to trace. Some traders will quote a
price but then ask for substantially more money when the job has been completed.
Some work can be carried out and completed to a poor, or even unsafe standard. Some cold callers are
also linked to burglaries, or other criminal activity. Police are asking for residents to be vigilant and wary
when dealing with cold callers at the door and to report any suspicious persons or activity to them as soon
as possible.
They are also asking for residents to pass this information on to older, or more vulnerable neighbours as
they may get targeted.
Reputable, local traders can be found via North Wales Trading Standards Services ‘Buy With
Confidence’ Scheme https://www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk
Week two (Monday 17th June) - ‘Life established’
By ‘life established’ we’re referring to those aged 40 to 60. According to our data, this group is the largest
group targeted by scams but won’t necessarily report those scams if they’ve been able to get their money
back. They’re usually targeted by a wide variety of scams because they’re more settled and have access to
financial assets. This can include anything from pension scams to dating scams to property scams.
Scams aren’t just a minor inconvenience to people. Aside from financial loss, they can cause distress,
misery, and even if a scam has been avoided, it can lead to a widespread loss of consumer confidence.
They can also happen to anyone.
Message :
Report scams you encounter. It's important to report to help protect others and to help the
authorities catch scammers.
DOORSTEP COLD CALLERS
We have received reports of cold callers in the New Broughton area of Wrexham
asking people for their details to register for a social networking group. We
would like to remind residents to be very wary of providing any personal details
to cold callers, either on the doorstep or over the telephone. This is because
information could be passed, or sold onto, other organisations, or potentially used to steal your identity. If
Scam Telephone Calls A resident has received a telephone call claiming to be from SKY. The caller
claimed that she had been overcharged and was due a £202 refund. The caller said that to ‘action’ the
refund they had ‘all the information’ they needed except the date of birth. The resident refused to provide
her date of birth and asked that they write to her. They said they were ‘too busy’ to write to her. The
resident still refused. The residents SKY account is actually in her husbands name, but the caller spoke with
the wife relating to this, claiming to have her details. The resident has not been able to speak with SKY regarding
this however, the call appeared to come from an ‘01453’ number, which when dialled, appeared to
be someone's personal telephone number. This suggests that the number has been ‘spoofed’ confirming it
was a scam attempt. Please be wary when approached to complete ‘surveys’ or entering competitions on
Facebook or similar social network platforms where your details are requested to enter competitions etc.
This information can be sold or passed on to other companies and could be used for unscrupulous purposes.
A resident has received a number of recorded message calls stating that there was an issue with the
internet and to press ‘1’ for BT or 2 for other networks. The resident was aware that this was a scam and
didn't respond. The resident recorded two telephone numbers, neither of which are recognised. This is an
attempt to steal money from you. Enter details of this link for advice from BT https://www.bt.com/help/
Charitable organisation est1987 as a Neighbourhood Watch Association in Flintshire which progressed to
supporting North Wales in 2016, as requested by people
Citizens Advice research found that almost three-quarters of people have been targeted by scammers over
the previous 2 years.
Scam telephone calls cont.. A resident received an automated telephone call. As the automated caller
spoke so quickly she did not pick up all of the message, but she did manage to pick up to press a number to
verify a transaction for £600. They did not press any of the numbers but put the phone down. She dialled
1571 and obtained an 01942 number. She rang the number and the female person who answered seemed
flustered and said they had received a number of similar calls and that she wanted nothing to do with it. She
said she was speaking with her supplier. The resident then rang her bank, the money had not been taken
and they informed her that, from September, all banks would be contacting people who make unusual
payments via special security, asking them to press a digit on their phone to verify the payment before it is
authorised. Be mindful of this in case scammers attempt to use this method to steal money from you
A resident has received two telephone calls over the last three weeks. The callers claimed to be from SKY
and told her she was due a new sky box. With the first telephone call she was on the phone for around 45
minutes. During the conversation arrangements were made for the date when the ‘sky box’ would be
delivered but then they went on to say that the payments would be reduced and they would need her bank
A resident has received a scam e mail on her mobile phone. The e mail claimed to be from TV Licensing
claiming that there was a problem with her payment for her TV licence and for her to click on a link for more
