WELCOME TO SCHOOLGUIDE!
YOUR EDUCATION EXPERT
We are proud grandparents (is there any other kind?!) and our grandchildren
are attending schools at almost every level from nursery school and
kindergarten to high school. What is most interesting is to see how all types
of education work to mold and develop these young minds.
Our kids, now young parents themselves, went to both private and public
schools and are equally intelligent and well-adjusted good human beings,
making smart decisions in both their and their children’s lives. This begs the
question, what teachers and schools have the most impact on our children
and who is responsible for their success and happiness in life? Who should
we thank?
As it turns out, we know the answer to this, because it looks back at us in the
mirror and across the dinner table and in the classroom and the sports fields.
It is Mom and Dad, and Grandma and Grandpa, aunt and uncle and sister and
brother. It’s the 2nd grade teacher or the high school science mentor. It’s the
soccer, baseball or softball coach. It is all of us. We are amalgamations of those
around us, those we meet and read about, those that taught and coached us,
and those that befriend and love us.
The decisions we make for our children and their education are incredibly
important and are often difficult. These decisions are colored by our own
experiences, where we live, our bank accounts, our schedules and more.
We publish SchoolGuide with all of this in mind and to help parents with
these important decisions, because these children are our future and their
education matters…but you knew that.
The primary mission of CAPSES is to promote the delivery of
Organized Learning
6
Steps to
create the
best learning
environment
for your child
Step 1
Evaluate you’re Environment
Take time to tune into your child. Remember every
child is unique and some children thrive in different
environments. What kind of home environment does
your child seem most receptive or engaged in? The
living room? Dining room? At the computer desk?
Will this environment be practical and functional for
schoolwork?
Step 2
Creating the “Learning Space”
Dedicate a space within the environment you
believe will best suit your child for reading, studying
and homework. Make sure this space will always be
easily accessible. This space should provide security
and stability for your child. Personalize the space so
your child can feel connected to it. Make it colorful
and vibrant but not too over stimulating where it can
become a distraction. Add different styles of storage
such as bins for books and containers to separate
markers & pencils.
Have a place for everything, so when your child
is in need of school supplies he/she knows exactly
where to go.
Style’s School Guide-2019-20 schoolguideonline.com 13

Step 3
Eliminate Distractions
We all love to be on our screen, whether it’s our
phone, tablet, computer or tv and you know your
child loves it even more! Make sure you keep your
child’s learning space screen free.
In return you can use screen time as a reward for
your child’s time spent doing their homework or
studying.
30 minutes of reading = 30 minutes on the tablet
Step 4
Consistency
As a parent we know not every day is the same, and
some days we are busier than others. Do your best
to set a time each day for your child to dedicate to
Do your best to set a
time everyday for your
child to dedicate in their
learning space.
their learning space. Remember you are helping your
child build habits that could be helpful throughout his
school years and even in college!
Step 5
Maintenance
Ensure that this learning space remains the learning
place it started as. The personalization of this space
will evolve just as your child does, but it’s important to
keep the space clean and organized. Cluttered spaces
can lead to cluttered minds.
This is a good teaching opportunity for your child
to be mindful of his/her space. That cleaning up the
environment is just as important as the homework
just finished.
Step 6
Be present
Check in on your child. Make sure they understand
what they are working on. Offer your help if they may
need it. Most importantly, be mindful that homework
can be a stressful time for them.
If you see your child’s frustration during homework
time. Consider cutting the tension by bringing them
their favorite snack. This is a sweet gesture to show
your child you love them and that you are paying
attention to their efforts. •
preschools
Preschool encompasses some of the most exciting
and enriching years of a child’s life. During these
developmental years, children absorb information
at extremely rapid speeds, expressing interest
and curiosities in every new discovery. Most preschools
include 3-5 year olds, although each is unique with varying
teaching styles and curriculum. Early childhood programs
are a great way for young kids to develop communication
skills, as well as a knowledge and understanding of the
world. Through daily interaction in a classroom setting
with other children, preschoolers experience personal,
social, and emotional development as well.
Due to an increase in maternal employment rates, national
anti-poverty initiatives, and research showing the
link between early childhood experiences and the brain
development of young children, 4 year olds enrolled in
formal education has skyrocketed from 10% in 1960 to
almost 70% today. The greater Sacramento region offers
countless programs designed to meet the different needs
of each child. Some of the most prevalent include Mon-
tessori, Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia, as well as religious,
community, and cooperative approaches to early education.
Preschool is a perfect time to introduce complicated
subjects to children in creative and enriching ways through
exploration of letters, sounds, colors, shapes, numbers,
drawings, and much more.
teaching styles and practices not commonly found in
public education. The Waldorf system, for example,
believes in introducing traditional academic subjects
later on in life, around the age of 7, while focusing heavily
on imaginative and creative activities at a younger
age. According to the Private School Review, there
are approximately 19,000 students in the Sacramento
region enrolled in private education with an average
teacher student ratio of 13:1.
Before deciding on the right school for their
child, parents must first make the choice
between private and public education. With
tuition costs, academic courses, location, and
other factors to weigh in, finding the right fit may take
some time. There are several benefits of the private
school education system, with specialized instruction
from well-trained teachers, to stronger sports programs
and close religious affiliations among the most praised.
According to the National Center for Education, 80% of
private schools in the United States are affiliated with a
particular religion, while the remaining 20% consist of
nonsectarian schools such as Montessori, Waldorf, and
Country Day.
With more than 140 private schools in the greater
Sacramento region, there are a variety of programs to
accommodate a wide range of expectations and interests.
The Charter school system is a growing educational
movement becoming more popular over
the last decade. They are simply public schools
which function under a contract or “chartered”
agreement with an authorizing agency. These agencies
range from parent or teacher groups, to small business
and non-profits. Charter schools are required by law to
be non-discriminatory, serve all students including those
with disabilities, and partake in their state’s testing and
accountability systems.
They are essentially a school of choice, meaning that
parents chose to enroll their students, as opposed to
being assigned to a school by a district. They have the
freedom and ability to pursue specific educational objectives
while generally offering smaller class sizes with
fewer students. No two charter schools are the same;
some cater to students interested in technology and
the arts, while some have language immersion specific
programs or assist students with behavioral challenges.
A parent’s freedom to choose programs they feel best
fit their child’s educational need is the main reason
these schools continue to flourish. With nearly 3 million
students attending over 6500 schools in the nation, 43
states and the District of Colombia have already enacted
laws protecting and promoting charter programs.
Special Needs
Raising a child with special needs comes with
a set of responsibilities not familiar to most
parents. Often it can seem overwhelming
to make sense of your child’s needs while
assuring they are properly educated alongside their
peers. Since the 1970’s, public schools have provided
some form of special education services. In 2004, the
Disabilities Education act also known as IDEA required
local educational agencies to provide “specially defined
instruction, and related services, at no cost to parents,
to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability”.
This essentially created IEP’s or Individualized Education
Programs in which school districts ensured all students
received the instruction and care they need. Most districts
provide support services for students until the age
of 21/22, as well as assist parents and students with necessary
transitioning steps.
Districts such as San Juan Unified in Sacramento
County implement their own educational plan and are
responsible for creating their own policies, procedures
and programs. They provide educational services to
over 4700 students, employing more than 500 special
education teachers, specialists and instructional assistants.
They are incorporated into what is known as a
Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA), which covers
the districts within Sacramento County. Placer and El
Dorado Counties are in separate regions but still follow
the SELPA plan, ensuring all special needs students are
integrated into public schools.
READING ALLY

We all learn differently. Some are visual learners. Others learn better
through audio. Many are kinesthetic learners, meaning they learn better
when they use their hands and bodies.
by Brenna McGowan
According to LD Online, five to fifteen percent
of the nation suffers from dyslexia, a disability
that affects reading, writing and the overall
process of written language. This means that
without some type of intervention, there is
a large sector of the United States that will
struggle from childhood into adulthood with
reading.
Unfortunately, reading impacts so many
areas of one’s life. Trouble reading doesn’t
mean someone will have trouble just reading
a book. Reading difficulties also impact filling
out job application, taking tests for college or a
trade school, even down to reading a menu at
a restaurant.
Over recent history, assistive technology
(AT) has played a huge role in helping kids learn
more effectively. Assistive technology plays
many roles in learning, from helping solve math
equations to aiding those with communication
limitations to be able to express themselves.
Thankfully, assistive technology can also help
those with reading difficulties.
One of the programs that does this is
Learning Ally. According to Learning Ally’s
website, “Research has shown that making
reading a multisensory experience can increase
engagement, comprehension and retention.”
Learning Ally is a program that children can
access for audio books. This enables children
who might not be able to read at grade level
access books and information that they wouldn’t
be able to otherwise. What makes Learning Ally
different than some similar programs or apps is
that not only is it read by humans, but the words
of the text appear on the tablet or computer.
While the words are read aloud, the reader can
follow along visually. Additionally, the text is
highlighted as the words are read. This creates
a multisensory approach to reading.
According to Danielle Horneman, Education
Specialist at Ponderosa High School in Shingle
Springs, CA, “This multisensory experience
increases the ability for a student to become
involved or engaged with the concepts, skills
and materials which are presented. When a
student is able to engage and have meaningful
interactions with a specific concept or skill, they
are often able to make a connection. When
these connections are made, students are
better able to retain—or in other words—learn
concepts, skills and material over extended
periods of time verses than in the moment.
The more sensory interactions a student can
have, the stronger the connections. Strong
connections equates to retention. Retention of
material builds confidence and confidence in
learning, and builds lifelong learners.”
Owen Christensen, who is 12 years old,
attends Rolling Hills Middle School in El
Dorado Hills, CA. His mom, Sue Christensen,
says about Learning Ally, “Owen learns from
memorization. The more he sees words, the
more he remembers them. So his reading is
improving while his vocabulary grows.”
One of the benefits for parents of children
using Learning Ally is that they can now put
the power of reading into their child’s hands.
Instead of spending countless hours reading
to them, children can be independent, which
brings self-confidence. Now students who
never wanted to open a book before are able
to take their device and read independently.
This independence is very important as children
progress through grade levels.
Even though technology can be a blessing
and a curse sometimes, when it comes to
children being able to read there’s no dispute
that it is a win-win. The knowledge gained from
reading not only brings independence, but
much needed self-confidence as children grow
from childhood into adulthood. •
dence, perseverance, non-verbal communication, focus,
and accountability are among the vast array of life skills
children develop from exposure to the arts. Learning a
musical instrument improves motor, visual learning, and
language development skills the same way learning a foreign
language might. Through theater and plays, children
are able to express brand new emotions, often times
developing empathy and compassion by identifying with
the characters they are portraying.
Art galleries provide environments for developing cultural
awareness, and they introduce children to different
types of paintings, sculptures, and styles of art. Crocker
Art Museum in downtown Sacramento and Blue Line
Arts in Roseville offer educational programs for students.
Dancing is a wonderful way for kids to stay active, learn
motor and movement skills which can be carried over
to a number of careers and professions. Styles such as
Ballet significantly relieve stress and promote flexibility,
body awareness, and better posture, increasing selfesteem
and a child’s ability to express themselves to their
peers. These are among the most valuable benefits of
enrolling in performing arts. The Arts have always been
pioneers of self-expression and should be integrated into
the life of every child.
tutoring
Finding the right tutor for your child is imperative
in ensuring their academic success. Different
factors to take into consideration include the
child’s areas of struggle as well as the types of
tutoring programs available. Homework helpers, testprep,
and general tutors are the most common in assist-
ing students from preschool through college with day to
day assignments and preparing for standardized or specialized
admission tests. These types usually work best
for children who perform at grade level but need a little
help or guidance with organization, time management,
and study skills. When a student is struggling to grasp
and understand an educational concept as a whole, specialty
subject tutors are usually the best fit, with centers
focusing solely in English or Math assistance.
Tutoring programs range from learning centers and
after school study halls to private tutors and those
qualified to assist with special needs. Although tutors
are usually for assistance to meet grade level standards,
they can also help with enrichment for children eager to
excel at rates faster than in a standard classroom. There
are ample after school programs for gifted children or
those who wish to learn a subject not generally taught in
elementary, middle or high schools.
sports - swimming - martial arts
enrolling in recreational sports are a great way for them
to explore areas of interest, while expanding their social
circles to find like-minded individuals that share similar
interests and goals.
Pushing a healthy active lifestyle, promoting selfesteem,
and introducing the importance of teamwork
are among the most common benefits of enrolling children
in youth sports. They also have the ability to train
children to develop professional skills, from setting long
term goals, to understanding the concepts of time management
and priorities. With childhood obesity at an alltime
high in the United States, promoting physical exercise
beginning at a young age is extremely important.
Countless studies have drawn positive conclusions and
made links between children enrolled in youth sports,
and overall wellness of mind, body, and spirit.
Sports activities encourage children to live healthy
and active lifestyles. From basketball and soccer
leagues, to gymnastics, martial arts, rock climbing,
cheerleading, swimming and so much more,
the greater region of Sacramento is known for its wide
variety of youth sports programs and organizations.
Some of the most prevalent in the area are swim leagues
and soccer clubs, both offering recreational and competitive
options depending on skill and level of interest.
If your child is unsure of which activities best suits them,
camps
What better way for children to occupy
their recess Summer months than with
exciting and enriching camps! Each year
millions of students throughout the United
States attend day and overnight camps where creating
a safe, educational environment is the top concern
for staff leaders and organizers. These programs provide
opportunities for children to explore areas of interest
unavailable to them during the school year. Sacramento
offers a variety of programs ranging from physical
activities such as sports and outdoor adventure camps
to more educationally focused pastimes. Art and technology
camps are also prevalent, exposing children to
exciting themes they will likely encounter later on in high
school or college.
Apart from the obvious benefit of keeping your child
active, camps offer ways for kids to learn social skills,
grow independence, gain resilience, and much more.
Outdoor and overnight camps are helpful for unplugging
from technology and reconnecting with nature.
Being on their own teaches children the importance of
independence and making executive decisions for themselves
without the guidance of teachers and parents.
Day camps keep kids occupied while still being close
to home. The change from overly booked school year
schedules is a good break for children to enjoy unstructured
play and free time.
AFTER THE
BELL RINGS
4 BENEFITS OF
AFTERSCHOOL
PROGRAMS
K-6 GRADE
54 Style’s School Guide-2019-20 schoolguideonline.com

SECURE ENVIRONMENT
Parenting is a juggling act, especially when you work
a 9-5 and your child gets out of school by 3pm.
Afterschool programs extend the ability for parents
to finish work without having to worry where your
child is or having to leave work early. Your child would
check into the program directly after they are dismissed from
class, and would only be able to leave once their designated/
approved guardian signs them out for the day.
Most programs allow parents to create a designated pickup
list. Just in case an extra hand is needed, grandma or big
brother could have the ability to check your child out for the
day too!
ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Homework can be a very stressful time for a child, especially
when there is a topic he/she doesn’t fully understand.
Having a resource outside of the classroom could be of value
to your child’s confidence and ability to work through those
tough problems. Most afterschool programs are equipped
with staff who are there to support your child during those
frustrating moments.
Having additional help on tough subjects (outside of
the classroom) can be beneficial to your child and his/her
academic performance.
ROUTINE
Eat. Sleep. Learn. Repeat. Children work better when given a
structured routine. Afterschool programs help to incorporate
structure and routine around homework time and free time.
Most afterschool programs have set schedules for homework
and activities so your child can get the most out of his/her
time in the program.
Creating a routine based around your child’s education
can have long term benefits in his/her confidence in each
learning environment.
FREE TIME
Every child (especially adults) need balance between work
and play. Most afterschool programs incorporate activities
to keep kids active and involved, adding extra support for
your child to socialize in a fun setting. These programs allow
your child to connect with different students outside of his/
her classroom. Removing the pressure of the classroom
could help your child feel comfortable making new friends
or talking amongst peers.
Activity time during your child’s afterschool program can
allow your child to expend some energy, making a potentially
more relaxed child when it’s time to pick them up.
Every afterschool program is different and will vary when
it comes to the schedule and planned activities. Make a habit
of checking in on your child to ensure the program is truly
helpful... •
public schools
The Sacramento area boasts some of the top
scoring public school districts in the state of
California. With almost 30 districts spanning
across Sacramento, Placer, and El Dorado
County, there are several unique offerings and qualities
to these schools, which differentiate them from one
another.
Each student is assigned a district and school respectively
based on their home address. Most districts
include charter or open enrollment options, meaning
that students are not necessarily forced to attend their
assigned school. The ability to move schools within a
district through open enrollment gives parents and students
more freedom and choices within the public school
system. Although it is a much harder process, students
may apply for district transfers, with priorities given to
students interested in specific programs not offered
within their district.
Each district is equipped with educational resources
to accommodate a vast array of students from those
needing special assistance and guidance to those wanting
more rigorous and challenging courses. Programs
such as the International Baccalaureate, Rapid Learner,
and GATE are for gifted students who excel at rates faster
than the average student. These programs challenge
students to explore curriculum not generally found in the
public school system. Almost all public high schools
in the state of California offer some form of Honors
or Accelerated Programs (AP) for certain classes.
Students who are qualified have the ability to receive
college credits upon completing these courses and
passing an exam. Some students are able to complete
an entire semester or even a year of college courses
for a fraction of the price!
There are countless other benefits to attending free
public schools in Sacramento, Placer, and El Dorado
Counties, including a focus in language, arts, and
physical activities. Most schools introduce some form
of secondary language instruction in Elementary and
Middle School, with all high schools offering Spanish
classes at the least. Physical Education is not only a
state requirement, but also an important way to keep
kids active and healthy throughout their school year.
Districts are unique in educational offerings but
all follow the same guidelines laid out by the state of
California. Parent support is often required to ensure
extra-curricular activities and programs are not eliminated
due to budget shortfalls. The public school districts
in the greater region of Sacramento have done
an exceptional job in educating students and preparing
them for college and life after school.
