22 Wednesday June 26 2019 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Gualter hat-trick seals Lincoln Combined win • By Gordon Findlater CAPTAIN fantastic Wil Gualter scored 26 points for Lincoln Combined in their 28-19 win over Marlborough Boys’ College on Saturday. The second-five was in red hot form at Lincoln High School, scoring a hat-trick and nailing a number of long-range penalties. The most memorable moment of the performance included a solo try which saw him elude half a dozen Marlborough Boys’ tacklers before powering over the line with a defender attached Tom Hooper to him. “He’s a special player and had a fantastic game,” said Lincoln Combined coach Tom Hooper. The performance was one of Lincoln Combined’s best of the season, Hooper’s said. He highlighted their defensive effort and speed on attack as keys to victory. “We got much better goforward in and around the edges of the ruck and in offensive pattern. It’s something that we trained really hard on in the week, just trying to speed up our pace of play a little bit and get that extra metre,” said Hooper. “They had a really big pack and some very talented boys. It was a matter of shifting them around a little bit because we were fitter and making use of that . . . the game was in the balance with 10min to go and ultimately our fitness proved to be the difference.” Lincoln Combined face their toughest task of the year to date on Saturday when they travel to top-of-the-table, undefeated St Andrew’s College. However, the team will take confidence from their most recent display. “The performance on Saturday was a step up and it’s now about making that the foundation for the rest of the season,” said Hooper. Kick off against St Andrew’s College will be at 2.45pm on Saturday. Now the 30-year-old is home visiting family in New Zealand after winning the double with English premiership side Saracens. Maitland arrived back in Christchurch last week after a busy 10-month season with Scotland and Saracens. He caught up with friends and family, and has also been keeping fit – being put through the wringer by friend Matt Bateman at The Hiit Squad gym with former teammates Ryan Crotty, Israel Dagg and Codie Taylor. “It’s the off-season, but if you get down to the gym at 7.30 in the morning then you can eat whatever you want for the rest of the day and play some golf,” said Maitland. He’s also been looking at how the central city has evolved over the past 12 months. “The strip’s looking good now. I had a look the other day and everything has changed . . . there’s little pockets popping up and I’m sure when I come back in three or however many years it’s going to be a great city,” said Maitland. The look of the city and its nightlife has changed a lot since his early days in Christchurch, which involved nights out at old haunts on Manchester St and Oxford Tce. “It used to be Shooters on a Thursday, Boogie Nights on a Friday, and then the strip on the Saturday,” said Maitland. “It was great memories, Jim Doyle reports on Lincoln University’s game against Marist Albion ‘IF WE can do it once, we can do it again’ would have been the catch-cry for Marist Albion. Following just one season of club rugby, Maitland made the Canterbury NPC team at 19. The following year he was named in the Crusaders squad and made 13 appearances, scoring three in his last game for the Rams before taking up a contract with Waikato, and Josh Bokser were heroes for LU. Shalfoon soared high towards the back of lineouts, ripped ball off the opposition, carried strongly and took his try close to half-time with authority. They advanced to the final before being beaten by the Reds 13-18 in Brisbane. Quade Cooper – who was instrumental in the Reds success that year – is Maitland’s cousin. “I think it was the first time I’d lost to him actually. Growing up in Tokoroa we played against each other at club and then we had a few good battles at school,” the heart of the LU performance. Following the 2012 season, Maitland signed with Glasgow Warriors to chase his dream of playing for Scotland as he has Scottish grandparents. Within a few months of arriving at Glasgow, he was making his debut for Scotland against England at Twickenham and was then named in the British and Irish Lions squad to travel to Australia. Since then, Maitland has played for Glasgow, London Irish and now Saracens, and has racked up 40 caps for Scotland. His most memorable season to date came this year. His Saracens side achieved the double, winning the European Cup final against Leinster 20-10 in May and the premiership final against Exeter 37-34 earlier this month. Maitland scored tries in both finals. He is currently visiting family in Waikato and will return to Scotland this month. He has a busy schedule ahead, and is aiming to book his spot in Scotland’s squad for this year’s World Cup. “There’s a lot of competition, especially in the back three, but it would be cool if I could get a second World Cup under my belt,” said Maitland.
