Cannery Row
by: John Steinbeck
Cannery Row is a novel by American author John Steinbeck, published in
1945. It is set during the Great Depression in Monterey, California, on a
street lined with sardine canneries that is known as Cannery Row. The story
revolves around the people living there: Lee Chong, the local grocer; Doc, a
marine biologist; and Mack, the leader of a group of derelicts.
Cannery Row has a simple premise: Mack and his friends are trying to do
something nice for their friend Doc, who has been good to them without asking
for reward. Mack hits on the idea that they should throw a thank-you party,
and the entire community quickly becomes involved. Unfortunately, the party
rages out of control, and Doc’s lab and home are ruined—and so is Doc’s
mood. In an effort to return to Doc’s good graces, Mack and the boys decide
to throw another party—but make it work this time. A procession of linked
vignettes describes the denizens’ lives on Cannery Row. These constitute
subplots that unfold concurrently with the main plot.
Steinbeck revisited these characters and this milieu nine years later in his
novel Sweet Thursday.
The actual location Steinbeck was writing about, Ocean View Avenue in Monterey,
was later renamed “Cannery Row” in honor of the book. A film version
was released in 1982 and a stage version was produced in 1995.
HEARING AID
TECHNOLOGY
For Less Than $ 200
(Source: Wikipedia)
“I was amazed!
Sounds I hadn’t
came back to me!”
— Don W., Sherman, TX
How can a hearing aid that costs less than $ 200
be every bit as good as one that sells for $2,250 or more?
The answer: Although tremendous strides have been made in
Advanced Hearing Aid Technology, those cost reductions have
not been passed on to you. Until now...
MDHearingAid ® uses the same kind of Advanced Hearing Aid Technology incorporated into
hearing aids that cost thousands more at a small fraction of the price.
Over 300,000 satisfied MDHearingAid customers agree: High-quality, FDA-registered hearing
aids don’t have to cost a fortune. The fact is, you don’t need to spend thousands for a
hearing aid. MDHearingAid is a medical-grade hearing aid offering sophistication and high
performance, and works right out of the box with no time-consuming “adjustment”
appointments. You can contact a licensed hearing specialist conveniently online or by phone
— even after your purchase at no cost. No other company provides such extensive support.
Now that you know...why pay more?
Can a Hearing Aid Delay or Prevent Alzheimer’s and Dementia?
A study by the National Institute on Aging suggests older individuals with
hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop Alzheimer’s and
dementia over time than those who retain their hearing. They suggest that
an intervention — such as a hearing aid — could delay or prevent this by
improving hearing!
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR 45-DAY RISK-FREE TRIAL!
Hearing is believing and we invite you to try this nearly invisible hearing aid with no annoying whistling
or background noise for yourself. If you are not completely satisfi ed with your MDHearingAid, return it
Chowanoke Native American History
By Duvonya Chavis
July 2019
LOCAL HISTORY 5
The Chowanoke and the Tuscarora Indians share
quite a bit of history and interaction between
themselves. As neighbors, this history has been a
long one that started prior to colonization and continues
in many respects today. While there were many
distinct differences between the tribes, the two shared
some customs that were remarkably similar. For
instance, their burial practices were similar, certain
features of their pottery were noted as being similar,
and even some of their words were shared.
While the overall interaction was generally positive,
there was a time when the Chowanoke engaged
in war against the Tuscarora. However, this did not
occur with the Tuscarora group that were immediate
neighbors of the Chowanoke but with a separate
Tuscarora group who was located further south and
who was under a different leadership. This part of
history is misunderstood by many who generalize that
the Chowanoke fought against the Tuscarora. The
Tuscarora who were under Chief Blunt’s leadership
were friends with the Chowanoke. In fact after the
Tuscarora War, Chief Blunt asked the NC Council to
be moved north of the Roanoke River after they were
initially assigned to their more traditional southern
location. This area, designated as Indian Woods Reservation
in Bertie County, was historically a part of the
Chowanoke territory as noted on early maps drawn at
the time of colonization.
During the period just after the Tuscarora War, there
was a lot of movement between the Chowanoke
reservation and the Indian Woods reservation. As
the Chowanoke reservation was being encroached
upon or portions were being sold, many Chowanoke
residents went to live on the Indian Woods reservation
and likewise, several Tuscarora came to live on
the Chowanoke reservation as their reservation was
being unfairly encroached upon and taken. The NC
Council even attempted to merge the two tribes during
that period, although the Chowanoke tribe as a whole
did not comply. Many still lived on their reservation in
Gates County during the post war period in the early
1700’s, noting that the last parcel of Chowanoke
Reservation did not take place until late 1790’s and
some Chowanoke still continued to live communally
on fee simple land until the 1830’s. Later, it is noted
that a few Chowanoke did eventually migrate to New
York with some of their Tuscarora friends after the war
and is the reason why many believe the two tribes
merged. However, many more Chowanoke remained
in Gates County and the surrounding areas.
Surely colonization brought about many changes in
the traditional framework of the two tribes. Through
the evolution of changes however, both tribes still exist
in North Carolina where they face different issues
today warranting restitution. Issues of tribal integrity,
tribal sovereignty, and reparations are needed for both
groups who unknowingly at the time absorbed a major
brunt of the damaging consequences that European
colonization had on their government and sovereignty
before westward expansion was ever considered.
These reparations to this day have yet to be forthcoming.
FINANCIAL FOCUS
Tools are Great for Father’s Day – and for Investors
If you’re a dad, you may well be pleased to unwrap some tools as
Father’s Day gifts. Of course, it might be a stereotype that all men
are handy at repairs; women certainly can be every bit as good when
it comes to building and fixing things. In fact, the construction process
is valuable for anyone to learn – and the same skills that go in to
creating and mending physical objects also can be applied to financial
projects – such as working toward a comfortable retirement.
Here are a few of those skills:
• Diagnosing the challenge – A good craftsperson knows that the first
step toward accomplishing any outcome is to assess the challenge.
So, for example, if you want to build some bookshelves right into
the wall, you’ll need to locate the wall studs, determine if you have
adequate space for the shelving you want and allow room for future
expansion. Similarly, if you want to retire at a certain age, you need
to consider the key variables: your current and future income (How
much can you count on from your retirement plans?), where you’ll
live (Will you downsize or relocate? Will you rent or own a house or
condominium?) And what you’ll do as a retiree (Will you travel extensively
or stick close to home? Will you do some type of work for pay
or pursue your hobbies and volunteer?).
Submitted by Chuck O’Keefe
Chuck.O’Keefe@edwardjones.com
• Assembling the right tools and materials – To put together your
bookshelf, you will need the right tools – saw, hammer, drill, sander
and so on – and the right building materials – plywood, nails, screws,
glue, brackets, moldings and so on. And to work toward a comfortable
retirement, you’ll also need the right tool – in the form of a long-term
financial strategy, based on your specific retirement goals, risk tolerance
and time horizon – along with the appropriate materials – the
mix of investments you use to carry out that strategy. These investments
include those you’ve placed in your IRA, your 401(k) or other
employer-sponsored retirement plan, and those held outside your
formal retirement accounts. Ideally, you want a diversified mix of investments
capable of providing growth potential over time, within the
context of your individual risk tolerance.
• Review your work – Once you’ve finished your bookshelf, you occasionally
may need to make some minor adjustments or repairs in response
to slippage, cracks or other issues that can develop over time.
As an investor, you also may need to tweak your financial strategy
periodically and adjust your investment mix – not necessarily because
something is broken, but to accommodate changes in your life, such
as a new job, new family situation and new goals. Furthermore, over
time, your risk tolerance may change, and this needs to be reflected
in your array of investments. Consequently, conducting an annual
portfolio review with your financial professional should be a priority.
Tools are a big deal on Father’s Day. But the construction-related
tasks they represent, physically and symbolically, go beyond any one
holiday and can be used by anyone interested in working toward a
solid financial future.
Gun Rights
by Joe Forbes
July 2019
UNLIMITED REINVENTED
OPINION 7
Dr. J. Stanley McQuade was famous for saying,
“A little bit of law is a dangerous thing”.
Nowhere is this more true than in the context of
carrying firearms across state lines. This is particularly
applicable to those of use who live near
the state line, and travel frequently to Virginia
to work or shop. Many times, people assume
that the laws of the other state are the same as
the laws of their home state, and we all know
what “assume” makes out of u and me. Failing
to know and comply with the foreign state’s laws
can result in civil liability, or even serious criminal
charges.
Concealed carry permit holders are already
familiar with the concept of “reciprocity”, whereby
one state recognizes a permit issued by another
state. The first thing a permit holder should do
when considering travelling to another state
is to verify that reciprocity exists between the
states. However, that is just the beginning of the
process. While in the other state, you must also
comply with all of their particular firearms laws,
which may or may not make sense to you. As an
example, North Carolina changed our law fairly
recently to allow permitted conceal carry in an
establishment that serves alcohol, provided that
the permittee is not consuming alcohol. Carry
into such an establishment in a state that does
not permit concealed carry on that premises at
all, and you are asking for trouble. Some states
have laws that ban possession of a weapon at
all on certain premises unless you have specific
permission from the person in control of the
premises.
Those who prefer to carry their weapons openly
can run into similar trouble. In NC, open carry
is generally allowed, except in prohibited places
like courthouses, schools, etc. But cross into
South Carolina or Georgia with a pistol on your
hip and you may get cited for open carry without
a permit, because they do indeed require a
permit to carry openly. Other states require that
open carry be in a belt holster only. Others ban
open carry altogether.
Some differences in the law affect both open
and concealed carry. For instance, some states
require that any firearm brought into that state
be registered with the police within a given time.
Others require a separate permit to merely possess
a weapon at all. Some states prohibit carry
Joe Forbes is a lawyer based in Elizabeth City, NC.
He is passionate about our second amendment
rights and writes articles on gun law.
on a highway rest stop, or a public park. Some
have “Stand Your Ground” or “Castle Doctrine”
laws that expand the circumstances when and if
you can actually use the gun, and some do not.
Illinois requires a state-issued Firearm Owner
Identification Card to even purchase ammunition.
Some municipalities ban the sale or possession
of hollow-point bullets. Special care must be
taken when travelling through highly-regulated
states like Maryland, where guns must be unloaded
and locked in a separate container in the
trunk. And don’t even think about taking a pistol
into Washington, DC or New York City at all!
Carrying/transporting long arms deserves mention
as well. Everyone should be aware by now
of the multitude of states and municipalities
which ban or restrict “assault rifles” or large capacity
magazines. But some states require that
they be unloaded and carried locked in the trunk.
As discussed in a previous article, the Federal
Firearms Owners Protection Act is supposed to
protect people transporting firearms from one
state to another while merely “passing through”
a state where the weapon would be regulated
or prohibited (if the weapon is transported in
compliance with the Act’s provisions), but it is no
guarantee against prosecution by an anti-gun
zealot local prosecutor.
The traps for the unwary are not limited to just
firearms. I used to attend a school for 2-3 days
every year in Illinois, where I drove 100 miles
from the airport to the school in unfamiliar territory
after dark. I knew better than to try to carry
a pistol there, so I bought an electric stun gun.
Then I learned that Illinois also forbids carrying
stun guns!
The lesson here is simple. When you cross that
state line, you might as well be entering a foreign
country. The ONLY rights that you take with you
are the ones set out in the United States Constitution
and the FOPA. Ignorance of their laws is
not an excuse, and they don’t care how you did
it in North Carolina. We live in the “Information
Age”, when you can get a basic understanding of
the foreign state’s laws just by visiting a website
or two. Educate yourself before you travel.
Some might consider it a hassle, but it’s easier
(and cheaper) than paying a lawyer.
How to Save Money on Mobile Devices
(StatePoint) With the skyrocketing cost of brandnew
mobile devices, it’s no wonder so many consumers
wait until their smartphone or tablet is on
its last leg, putting up with cracked screens, battery
issues and more for months at a time before considering
a replacement.
The good news is that these days, there are alternative
ways to make a timely upgrade that won’t give
you sticker shock.
“Savvy consumers are catching on to the fact that
you can find a high-quality refurbished device easily
if you look in the right places,” says David Conti,
senior director of e-Commerce at MyWiT.
Unfortunately, lingering myths persist about the
quality of all refurbished devices, making many
consumers shy away from this option. But the fact
is that a large percentage of refurbished mobile
phones, tablets and accessories were perfectly
good devices that owners traded in for newer models,
not because there was anything wrong with the
device.
But buyer beware. Different sellers have their own
standards, and you’ll want to stick to reputable
sources where you can trust the device you purchase
will be in fully functional condition and works
exactly as expected.
In the case of MyWiT, a company that sells new,
like-new and refurbished smartphones and tablets,
every device for sale has undergone an extensive
65+ point inspection of cosmetics, functionality
and connectivity to ensure optimal performance.
Tests verify every function that a customer can use
(camera, audio, SIM, WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.) is in 100
percent working order and connectivity tests ensure
wireless devices deliver a consistent quality of connection
and do not drop available signals. What’s
more, every device comes with a 90-day moneyback
guarantee.
The company’s state-of-the-art repair facility is capable
and approved to restore devices to manufacturer
and carrier specifications. This is great news
for resellers buying phones in bulk, too, who are
looking to save money while ensuring a high-quality
product for their own customers.
“Technology should be accessible to everyone,”
says Conti. “Unfortunately, many people who are
not aware of the quality of these refurbished options
may feel priced out of the latest high-quality technology.”
Once you upgrade, keep in
mind that you can stretch
your budget even further by
extending the life of your new
device with proper maintenance.
Use protective gear like
a case, screen protector and
waterproof bag, and keep your
phone clean inside and out
with a microfiber cloth and/or
compressed air.
More information can be found
at www.mywit.com.
In a world where staying connected is critical, keep
in mind that getting the reliable technology you need
to do just that, doesn’t need to break the bank.
How to Save Money on Pet Care
Multi-Medicinal Mullein
July 2019
NATURE 11
By: Coy Domecq
Mullein (pronounced like mullet but replacing the ‘t’ with an
‘n’) is yet another plant that is deceiving in its look although
powerful in its virtues. The mullein plant is native to Europe,
Asia and Africa but has a storied history in North America since
it entered this continent, purportedly in soil used as ballast in
olden-time sailing ships. This member of the snapdragon family
has very soft leaves and a tall, exaggerated stem adorned with
yellow flowers; the mature plant arranged in a pyramidal form.
The flowers usually bloom June through September locally and
can be found in arid regions, including eastern North Carolina.
They are especially well represented in the Sandhill area of NC,
almost to the point of being invasive.
(NewsUSA) - Owning a pet has a lot of perks, but caring
for one can take its toll on your wallet. According to the
ASPCA, owning a dog or cat can cost up to $1,000 in the
first year, and many people end up spending much more.
The good news is you can cut your pet care expenses
without compromising your pet’s health and well-being.
Here are a few ways you can save money and keep your
pet healthy.
1. Don’t skip the vet.
If you’re trying to save money, it can be tempting to cut
back on veterinary visits. But according to Julie Ciarmella
of the American Veterinary Medicine Association, “an
investment in preventive healthcare can reduce your longterm
pet healthcare costs.” Why? Because regular checkups
can prevent expensive complications down the road.
2. Get by with a little help from your friends.
Dog-walking, pet-sitting and kennel services can be some
of the most expensive aspects of owning a pet. You can
save money by taking the “you scratch my dog’s back, I’ll
scratch your cat’s chin” approach and tapping into a network
of other pet owners in your area. Neighborhood dog
parks are great places to meet like-minded pet lovers; or,
you could try good old-fashioned advertising.
3. Choose high-quality pet products that give you more
value for your money.
Reaching for the cheapest product can feel like a thrifty
move, but you may be surprised by the impact “cheap”
products can have on your budget. For example, cheaper
clay cat litter needs to be changed more often, so cat
owners go through bag after bag. World’s Best Cat Litter
is an alternative that harnesses the concentrated power of
corn for long-lasting performance. You’ll use less litter,
replace it less often and save money in the long run.
The mullein leaves, roots and flowers pack powerful medicinal
components that benefit relief from a host of maladies. The mucilage
and saponin contained within mullein have been associated
as remedies for tuberculosis, asthma, colds, flu, allergies,
bronchitis, cramps, inflammation, skin conditions, digestive
issues, insomnia, anxiety, joint pain, and bacterial infections-to
name a few. Application of the plant for these ills can be in the
form of teas, poultices, tinctures, smoked and applied directly
to the skin. The ancient Romans have records of mullein use
as do the Native American peoples. Medical use of this plant
is widely applied by modern herbalists and some of the ingredients
are still used by manufacturers of food, beverages and
pharmaceuticals today. Commercial preparations of mullein are
available and you can easily collect or grow your own plants.
1/2tsp cinnamon
1 cup coarsely chopped nuts
1 egg
1 cup of applesauce
egg, and add applesauce and shortening. Add
flour mixture. Stir until blended. Pour into loaf
INSPIRATION
Albemarle Eye Center
Adding powerful antioxidants to your diet can improve your eye health.
There’s no substitute for the quality of life good
vision offers. Adding certain nutrients to your
daily diet—either through foods or supplements—can
help preserve your vision. Researchers have linked
eye-friendly nutrients, such as lutein and zeaxanthin,
vitamin C, vitamin E and zinc, to reducing the risk of
certain eye diseases.
• Lutein & Zeaxanthin
Lutein and zeaxanthin are important nutrients found in
green leafy vegetables, as well as other foods, such
as eggs. Many studies show that lutein and zeaxanthin
reduce the risk of chronic eye diseases, including
age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.
• Vitamin C
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an antioxidant found in
fruits and vegetables. Scientific evidence suggests
vitamin C lowers the risk of developing cataracts.
Also, when taken in combination with other essential
nutrients, it can slow the progression of age-related
macular degeneration and visual acuity loss.
• Vitamin E
Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant found in nuts, fortified
cereals and sweet potatoes. Research indicates
it protects cells in the eyes from unstable molecules
called free radicals, which break down healthy tissue.
• Essential Fatty Acids
Fats are a necessary part of the human diet. They
maintain the integrity of the nervous system, fuel
cells and boost the immune system. Research shows
omega-3 fatty acids are important for proper visual
development and retinal function.
• Zinc
Zinc is an essential trace mineral or “helper molecule.”
It plays a vital role in bringing vitamin A from
the liver to the retina in order to produce melanin, a
protective pigment in the eyes. Zinc is highly concentrated
in the eye, mostly in the retina and choroid, the
vascular tissue layer lying under the retina.
5 Ways to Address Millennial Pessimism about Capitalism
July 2019
ECONOMICS 13
Polls suggesting that millennials have a favorable view
of socialism are well publicized. Less known are polls
showing that 90 percent of millennials have a positive view
of entrepreneurship, and 58 percent of millennial respondents
believe they are more entrepreneurial than previous
generations. So far, though, millennials have not been as
entrepreneurial in practice as prior generations. But there is
hope that this could change given their views on entrepreneurship
and the currently robust economy.
Capitalism is facing high-profile criticism and challenges
from politicians. But capitalism doesn’t need to be saved.
Rather, we need to teach this generation the skills to prosper
in a free enterprise system.
How Do We Respond to Millennial Pessimism?
It’s important to understand the economic challenges that
millennials face. But we do them a disservice when we let
them dwell in their pessimism. If we care about their longterm
success, the most useful thing we can do is help them
develop a resilient entrepreneurial mindset.
We often hear the message that a skills-based economy
requires continual learning. Because millennials have faced
arrested development, one of the best places for them to
begin their continuing education is by learning the basic
skills of free enterprise such as resilience, pragmatic optimism,
emotional intelligence, and the flexibility needed to
adjust to market changes.
It is not enough to counter bad policy on policy grounds
alone. To sustain capitalism, we must equip young people
with the tools needed to improve their well-being in a way
that government policy will never be able to.
1. Define Terms
Millennials’ skepticism of capitalism and their subsequent
embrace of socialism stems, in part, from a misunderstanding
of terms. Harvard economics professor Edward Glaeser
writes, “The unhappiness that many millennials have
with the status quo [of our economic system] reflects an
economy that has too often protected insiders at outsiders’
expense.” They have conflated cronyism between government
and business with capitalism, cementing their distaste
for what they believe to be free markets.
Those of us who understand capitalism and socialism
recognize the faultiness of this thinking. If we hope to see
millennials turn a corner, we must educate them on how
a healthy capitalist system functions and how they can
personally flourish in it.
2. Acknowledge Hardships
It’s clear that millennials’ economic adversities are real.
According to Ben Steverman, writing in Bloomberg, the
combination of stagnant wages and the student loan quagmire
significantly contributed to this generation’s delayed
prosperity. As a result, millennials are not saving enough
for their retirement. In addition, young adults will shoulder
the burden of mounting federal debt and have reason to
fear that Social Security may not be fully funded when
it’s their time to retire. These economic woes have led to
pervasive pessimism, as reflected in Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s
recent lamentation that her generation has never known
prosperity as adults.
By: Brooke Medina and Doug McCullough
In the face of economic challenges, millennials have fallen
behind other generations in certain adulthood milestones,
including buying homes, marriage, and childrearing.
Although this data paints a discouraging picture, comparing
quality of life from one generation to another can be
difficult.
3. Make the Case for Optimism
Prosperity is more than just salaries or gross domestic
product. Contrasted with previous generations, millennials
live in an enviable period. With smartphones, smart homes,
on-demand music, video streaming, ever-present information
from Alexa and Siri, and the consumer cornucopia that
is Amazon Prime, the number of ways one can entertain
themselves and connect with the world around them is
unprecedented.
After experiencing the Great Recession, the weakest
recovery in modern history, and growing income disparities,
the economic outlook for millennials may finally be improving
as productivity and wages increase and unemployment
falls. Millennials are now the largest contingent in the labor
force and arguably the most powerful consumer demographic.
On top of these conveniences of the digital age and sharing
economy, the economic growth of the past two years
has millennials feeling more optimistic financially. This
newfound optimism has led to several encouraging behaviors,
such as a significant uptick in marriage rates and an
increase in home purchases. Millennials are now responsible
for 42 percent of new mortgages, outpacing both baby
boomers and Gen X.
Millennials are still writing the book on their generation.
Each young person will have to choose whether to give
in to pessimism or act with the confidence that their own
decisions matter. Individuals on the short end of income inequality
can improve their financial prospects by their own
efforts more than any politician or policy ever could.
4. Help them Reimagine the American Dream
For decades, the American Dream has been defined by a
definition of prosperity that couldn’t account for the technological
advances ushered in by the Digital Revolution.
By reimagining the American Dream in a rapidly changing
economy and labor market, we can guide millennials away
from futile comparisons of the 20th-century version of success
and into an understanding of prosperity that matches
our highly mobile, innovative world. A 2019 American Enterprise
Institute report found that Americans may no longer
be defining the American Dream entirely in purely material
terms. Instead, as if to echo the Declaration of Independence,
Americans seem to be defining the American dream
as the “pursuit of happiness.”
According to the report,
Americans of all demographic groups believe being free
to live your life and having a rewarding family life are more
essential to the American dream than owning a home,
becoming wealthy, or even having a better life than their
parents.
Reprinted with permission from fee.org
The pursuit of happiness and prosperity is inherently active,
willful, and hopeful. A conviction that one’s actions and
decisions matter liberates us from the fatalist belief that
forces beyond our control shape our lives.
5. Become a Mentor
Those of us who believe that free enterprise leads to prosperity
should educate millennials and Gen Z about how to
be capitalists. Merely cheerleading capitalism when we see
aggregate GDP growth will neither persuade millennials nor
teach them how to take control of their own lives.
Schools are failing to teach the skills and traits necessary
for enterprise and entrepreneurship. The media is more interested
in clickbait about the latest scandals than devoting
pages or pixels to improving quality of life through economic
literacy and skill development. So, economic mentorship
should become the new activism.
You don’t need an MBA or PhD in economics to be an economic
mentor. And you don’t have to be in a formal mentorship
program or startup accelerator. Don’t wait for anyone’s
permission. Look for “teaching moments” to explain the
basics of how the market works. Most importantly, preach
agency. Spread the message that personal choices and
effort affect us more profoundly than any policy or governmental
program.
Ultimately, if we want to be free, we don’t need to go on an
apology tour for capitalism. Instead, we need to teach the
next generation that entrepreneurship, agency, and optimism
are not only possible but necessary for their economic
freedom. We may not change millennials’ perception of
capitalism overnight. But as they discover that their choices
matter and that making wise economic decisions produces
good results, we might end up winning the war on free
enterprise and save capitalism for the next generation.

of that research. This is more important than I
can state, for the research was very strong, removing
the effects of other factors such as race, gender and
socioeconomic status. Even with only the spanking being
the cause, the effects of hitting kids were long terms
emotional, behavioral and academic problems.
It is much better to use techniques that improve the
kid’s self-regulation skills and rewards the opposite
(good) behavior. For a discussion of alternatives to
hitting kids, see the February, 2019 issue of American
Psychologist.
Dear Dr. Crime: What is the truth about the criminal
behavior of illegal immigrants? Citizen voter
Dear Citizen: Judicial Watch, a group you can easily
locate on the internet, reports frightening reports about
that. A review of immigration regulations shows that our
policies clearly try to get new citizens who will contribute
positively to our society and reject those who will
cause harm of a variety of types. Also, Judicial Watch
reports a national poll showing that our citizens consider
immigration our most important problem. Research in
one state by the Crime Prevention Research Center
showed “Undocumented immigrants are at least 142%
more likely to be convicted of a crime than other Arizonans.
They also tend to commit more serious crimes
and serve 10.5% longer sentences, more likely to be
classified as dangerous, and 45% more likely to be
gang members than U.S. citizens. Yet, there are several
reasons that these numbers are likely to underestimate
the share of crime committed by undocumented
immigrants.” (see https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.
cfm?abstract_id=3099992) My review concluded this
is a profound problem, and the data is incomplete. We
need more and better research and unemotional consideration
of the problem.
It’s Spring Time In Tyrrell County
By: Jimmy Fleming
If you were to drive around Tyrrell County this time of year
… what would be the sights that would immediately let you
know that it was Spring. One of the first things would be potatoes
blooming, corn being planted, and wheat waving in the fields.
Others would be Dogwood trees flowering, Bull Frogs croaking,
and the sound of baseball/softball games from the local high
school.
As you drive with the window down you can smell the fresh soil
as farmers plow fields, lawns being mowed for the first time of the
season, bbq grills cooking outside, and the freshness after a rain
shower. You begin to see more wildlife during the day light hours
such as bears eating away in the wheat fields, deer nibbling on
fresh grass, martins hovering overhead, and the return of hummingbirds
to waiting feeders. You can also see beautiful gardens
being tended full of tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, sweet corn,
okra, and all the other great vegetables grown in our area.
mrflemz@embarqmail.com
You will notice the many types of turtles and terrapins sitting on
every available log in every waterway glad to see the warmth of
the spring sun. You may even be lucky enough to see an elusive
alligator in one of the local canals. Yes, there are many signs that
spring has finally arrived in our neck of the woods and these are
but a few.
season has brought the most unexpectedly admirable trends which aren’t the easiest to master,
and then, handle. If you’re someone who’s always on the go and seek for more comfort in terms
FASHION 17
#1 Work with Your Jewelry:
Embroidery
Ever had that moment when
you’re on your way to a spring
festival and you realize you don’t
have that specific headband
which would instantly give you
the bohemian chic, spring-friendly
look? Us too, which is why we’ve
found that taken off your chain
necklace and tying it around your
head gives you the vibe that
you’re looking for.
#2 Don’t Leave Without a Bright Scarf:
We all get one of those days when we feel
that our outfits just aren’t good enough for the
season no matter how hard we try. That’s why,
during the colorful season of spring, it’s important
to always keep an equally colorful scarf in
your bag to tie around your hair, bag, or wrist at
the right time.
Feathers
#3 Bright Nail Polish Is Your
Savior:
No matter how dull your outfit or
shoes are, there’s no way bright
nail polish won’t immediately add
extra points to your look and make
it spring-friendly. So don’t forget to
keep in your bag a bottle of pink,
green, or orange nail polish to help
you in emergencies.
Sandals
#5 Go for Patterned Clothes:
Whether it’s a floral pattern or a colorful abstract
situation, patterned clothes will be your
savior during your on-the-go, spring days.
That’s because the wrinkles seem to appear
less on them than solid colored clothes and
save you of the embarrassment of looking
out of place after a long plane ride.
#4 Pack Wisely and Colorfully:
If you’re traveling somewhere this spring,
remember to pack wisely but colorfully. When
it comes to clothes, your suitcase should only
consist of a few colorful and light piece that
can be mixed and matched with each other
easily. Throw in a few bright scarfs, bikinis, and
dusters, and you’re good to go.
Health and Nutrition Strategies for
Cancer Survivors and Everybody Else
Great Ways to Keep Your Mind Sharp
Warren is a 30 year member of the Institute of Food
Technology, A HAACP (hazard analysis critical control point)
Instructor with a Batchelors degree in Nutrition Science.
What’s in your diet?
really try to avoid punditry, but I think it’s time to give
I you my expert opinion on epidemiology issues that
I find troubling in my beloved Albemarle. In order for my
opinion on health matters to have any credibility, I have
to provide my credentials. So, here we go.
My food safety career spanned over 30 years beginning
as a New York State Meat and Poultry Inspector, initiating
inspection in New York City. From there to USDA
Inspector-In-Charge in rural upstate New York (Binghamton),
to administratively in USDA headquarters in
Washington, D.C.
My credentials include: HAACP Lead Instructor Training,
Foodborne Disease Control, Microbial Ecology of Food,
and Community Hygiene. In my position as Supervisory
Food Technologist in the Standards and Labeling
Division and Senior staff in the Food Safety Inspection
Service, I frequently contributed data and analysis to the
Epidemic Intelligence Service, and explained agency
policies in congressional hearings. I was on the team
that revolutionized the way mandatory meat and poultry
labeling was approved, and I authored and initiated
the original safe food handling instructions, on all noncooked
meat and poultry products.
I relocated to Northeast North Carolina a decade ago
after my prostate cancer’s recurrence. Seeking services,
such as local support groups screenings, etc.,I contacted
the American Cancer Society to learn what was available.
They advised me that services and information
were very limited and if I was interested in facilitating a
“Man to Man Prostate Group ” and becoming a cancer
advocate in Elizabeth City, which I eagerly agreed to.
After three rewarding years, the program was terminated.
This column overlapped the support group and I was
able to continue my advocacy through this platform.
My food safety background and cancer advocacy has
formed my current public policy perspective of “Cause
and Effect”. Why does Northeast N.C. have such a high
cancer and health disparity. I believe as Johns Hopkins
researchers assert, that the prostate and breast cancer
Comments or suggestions?
have a dietary link.
So let’s connect some dots. In last month’s column I
stated that local leadership was misguided by not being
true to the region’s culture. The state of North Carolina
was created for it’s rich soil and long growing season.
For more than a century, it was a major agricultural giant,
leading the nation in tobacco and cotton textiles.
That segues comfortably into the College of the Albemarle’s
initiative to develop an agriculture based curriculum.
They suggest that it could open local jobs in the agribiz
industry. I’m of course, particularly interested in the niche
aspect of their initiative. They include organic farming,
specialty crop and plant nurseries. An accredited organic
testing lab fits very nicely in that scenario since Clemson
University has ceased organic soil testing operations in
North Carolina. Elizabeth City State University’s Non-
Land Grant Status should EASILY provide the resources,
funding and professional laboratory personal to seamlessly
provide those lucrative testing services to N.C. And
the rest of the world.
Local soil testing will also serve to rule out local food as
the culprit or cause of the health disparity.
A very wise friend at the Knobs Creek Senior Center
shared a profound statement which will be a phrase I’ll
be making part of my vocabulary. “You don’t know it unless
you grow it”.
This months recalls and my observations : E-coli and
Salmonella are both transmitted in feces. In an earlier
article I reported on bio-solids or sewage sludge, here’s a
refresher. Bio-solids/Sewage sludge are treated sewage
used for fertilizing. I believe that outbreaks such as the
romaine lettuce thing is a breakdown of the bio-solids
quality control. Bio-solids are not allowed in U.S. Certified
Organic Products. Conversely, if your food is not
U.S. Certified Organic, well, you are what you eat.
(StatePoint) When you think about exercise, you likely
envision using the treadmill or lifting weights. But every
bit as important to your long-term health and wellness are
activities that keep your mind sharp and your cognitive
abilities strong and limber.
Here are several things you can do to help keep your
mind sharp:
• Solve a Crossword Puzzle: A crossword puzzle asks
you to reach into your long-term memory bank to solve
clues. You may be filling in boxes, but well-constructed
crossword puzzles will require you to think outside the
box, as sometimes clues are a bit trickier than they seem
at first glance, relying on word play or double meanings to
work. A relaxing way to unwind and concentrate, consider
adding this ritual into your morning.
• Get More from Nature: On your next nature hike, don’t
check out mentally. Set goals and keep your senses alert,
paying attention to sounds, sights and smells. New tech,
such as Casio WSD-F30 Pro Trek Smart Outdoor Watch,
can help. The watch features apps to support your hike,
including Location Memory to record information on trails
and viewpoints along the way, as well as Moment Setter
to notify you when you reach your targeted altitude.
• Learn a Language: A multilingual brain works more efficiently,
and it is never too late to pick up a new language.
There are many languages apps available to help, some
of them free, as well as more traditional taped audio lessons
you can pop on while commuting to work or doing
chores around the house.
• Make Math Fun: Want to build your critical thinking skills
and improve your ability to problem solve? Delve into
mathematics with fun math puzzles found online. Free
online software, such as ClassPad.net, includes resources
to help you solve problems, from simple calculations to
statistics, graphing and more.
• Get Sleep: Sufficient high-quality sleep is one of the
most fundamental ways to maintain a sharp mind and
keep your brain healthy through the years. Between 7-9
hours a night is ideal for adults, according to the National
Sleep Foundation. If you aren’t sleeping well, or feel
foggy during the day, consider how to shift your evening
routine to get more and better quality sleep.
From math puzzles to crossword puzzles to nature walks,
prioritizing workouts for the mind will help you stay sharp.
