Dear Glencoe Residents and Friends, 

On behalf of the Glencoe Chamber of Commerce Board 

of Directors and all our Members, I want to welcome you 

to the 2019-2020 Glencoe Chamber Community Guide. 

We are again fortunate to have 22nd Century Media as the 

Publishers of our Guide; they are the same organization 

that delivers the Glencoe Anchor to your door every week. 

In addition to providing you with contact information for 

all our Chamber members, the Guide also contains information about Village services, 

the local schools, the Library, Park District, many civic and volunteer organizations, 

governmental entities and more. In other words, the Guide is a valuable, one-stop 

resource to keep on hand throughout the year for information about “all things Glencoe”. 

This year is an exciting one for Glencoe, as we celebrate “Glencoe 150”, our 

Sesquicentennial Year. Beginning in late 2018 when the festivities kicked off at Light the 

Lights, Glencoe has held numerous events—from honoring 150 people who served to 

enhance the quality of life in Glencoe, to a musical especially written about the Village 

and performed at Writers Theatre. And the Glencoe celebration continues through this 

fall. In fact, the Chamber will be hosting a Recognition Luncheon on September 25 

to honor those who are current leaders in Glencoe, whether as an educator, business 

person, volunteer or Village employee. You are cordially invited to join the Chamber in 

recognizing them at the Luncheon at Skokie Country Club. For more information about 

the Luncheon, please see the ad in this Guide on page 28, or visit the Chamber’s website 

at www.glencoechamber.org. EVERYONE in Glencoe is invited, and we are looking forward to 

seeing you there! 

Additional Sesquicentennial activities in October and November will include a Gala 

at the Chicago Botanic Garden and programs covering Glencoe architecture and 

faith traditions. The celebration will come full circle at the traditional Light the Lights 

on November 29. But there’s even more to look forward to this fall. The Glencoe 

French Market will continue on Saturday mornings at Wyman Green through October 

19. Glencoe’s own “Halloween Hello” will be held in the downtown business district 

on Thursday, October 31, and Small Business Saturday will follow Light the Lights on 

Saturday, November 30. All the Chamber’s members and I hope you will attend these 

events and others you will read about in the Guide. 

At the same time, we also want to remind you to support Glencoe’s stores and 

businesses. Our business community adds so much to the vibrancy of life in Glencoe, 

and your loyal patronage, in turn, keeps them successful and thriving. Please remember, 

too, that a portion of your sales taxes is returned to the Village, so it’s a Win, Win, Win, for 

you, our stores and “Our Town, Glencoe”!

2019 is a year of celebration in the Village 

of Glencoe, as the Village commemorates 

its sesquicentennial (150th birthday). 

Incorporated on March 29, 1869, the 

Village has a long-history of innovation 

in local government—as evidenced by 

becoming the first community in the 

State of Illinois, and the fourteenth 

nationwide, to adopt a council-manager 

form of government in 1914. Then, in 

1921, the Village became one of the first 

communities in Illinois to adopt a zoning 

code and is still considered a model 

community in terms of land use and zoning 

control. The Village was also the first 

community in Illinois to cross-train officers 

in both police and fire fighting duties. The 

fully integrated Public Safety Department 

now performs all police, fire and 

emergency medical services. The Public 

Safety Department has been recognized as 

a nationally-accredited Law Enforcement 

Agency since 1994, and in 2004 the 

department also became an internationally 

accredited Fire Agency, making it the only 

fully integrated Public Safety agency in the 

world accredited in both law enforcement 

and fire services. 

Today, the approximately 8,800 residents 

of Glencoe enjoy premium services from 

the Village including public safety, water 

and sewer. The Village is also responsible 

for maintaining much of the community’s 

infrastructure including roads, bridges, 

sidewalks, water mains and service lines 

and more. Village staff members are 

committed to exceptional service level 

delivery and being responsive to the 

community, while also maintaining a 

fiscally and environmentally conservative 

footprint. These ideals are reflected in the 

Village’s Strategic Plan which can be found

While the Village is committed to planning 

for the future, we recognize that Glencoe is 

already a great place to live, work and raise

The Village President and the six Village 

Trustees make up the Village Board and 

are the legislative officials of the Village — 

each elected at large and serving fouryear 

terms. 

The Village Board guides the Village’s 

operations through policy decisions, 

enacted through local laws and 

ordinances, as well as through approving 

the Village’s annual budget. Additionally, 

the Village Board appoints the Village 

Manager, who oversees day-to-day 

operations, and the Village President 

appoints members of volunteer 

committees and commissions with 

the advice and consent of the Board 

of Trustees. The Village takes pride in 

engaging around 60 volunteers on our 

various committees and commissions in 

any given year. 

Regular meetings of the Village Board 

are typically held on the third Thursday of 

each month at 7 p.m. in the Village Hall 

Council Chambers, and all meetings are 

open to the public.

Coffee with the Boards 

Together with elected officials from the 

Glencoe Park District, District 35 and the 

Glencoe Public Library, the Village Board 

hosts a series of informal events to provide 

an opportunity for residents and business 

owners to engage in constructive discussion 

about community issues and current 

projects. The events are drop-in style, so 

there’s no commitment to stay for the whole 

time period, and no RSVPs are necessary.

The Public Safety Department was 

established in 1954 when the Village 

combined the police and fire departments 

into one single, cross-trained department. 

Today, our officers are cross-trained as 

certified police officers, firefighters and 

medical first responders. This level of 

efficiency allows the Village to provide 

a high level of emergency services to 

the community at a reduced cost when 

compared to municipalities utilizing 

traditional, separate police, fire and 

emergency medical components.

The Public Works Department promotes a 

safe and healthy environment in Glencoe 

by managing the maintenance of the 

Village’s infrastructure (roads, bridges, 

water mains, sanitary and storm sewers, 

etc.), administering building, zoning and 

engineering services and operating the 

Village’s Water Treatment Plant. In addition, 

the Public Works Department oversees 

garbage, recycling and yard waste 

collection services, currently provided by 

Lakeshore Recycling Systems.

Public education programs and community 

safety services are the foundation of the 

Public Safety Department’s partnership 

with the community. The department offers 

several educational programs and services,

• Glencoe Cares – In partnership with 

Family Service of Glencoe, Public Safety 

provides Glencoe seniors with additional 

support to ensure that needs and longterm

• Operation Reassurance – Operation 

Reassurance (also known as the Illinois 

Premise Alert Program) is designed to 

provide emergency response personnel 

with information about people with 

special needs. If an emergency occurs, 

the personnel will know about the 

special circumstance as they arrive 

on scene. The information is kept 

confidential. Families, caregivers or the 

person with the disability or special 

needs may provide this information. 

• Child Safety Seat Inspection Program 

– Statistics show that four out of every 

five Child Safety Seats are improperly 

installed and could lead to serious injury 

in an accident. Glencoe Public Safety has 

trained and certified Child Safety Seat 

Technicians who can instruct residents 

how to properly install child safety 

seats. They will also inspect an installed 

safety seat to make sure it is properly 

installed. This service is provided for 

Glencoe residents only. Inspections are 

performed by appointment only during 

regular business hours, Monday through 

Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. 

• Drug Collection and Disposal – In 

partnership with the Save a Star Drug 

Awareness Foundation, Public Safety 

offers a drug collection unit open to 

the public, no questions asked. Safely 

dispose of old, unwanted prescription 

and over the counter drugs in the Public 

Safety lobby at Village Hall, during 

Village Hall business hours Monday – 

Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please note 

that we cannot accept any liquids or 

syringes. 

Village Utilities 

Water and Sewer 

To set up or end water service, please call 

the Finance Department at (847) 835-4113. 

The Public Works Department is 

responsible for operating the Village’s 

water utility, which produces and 

distributes drinking water to all Village 

water customers. This includes maintaining 

58 miles of water main, valves and fire 

hydrants, as well as operating the Village’s 

water treatment plant (which produces 

our drinking water) and water storage 

facilities (which support in water delivery 

by ensuring that adequate water volumes 

and pressures reach our customers). The 

Village also maintains a network of nearly 

40 miles of public sanitary sewer mains 

and 70 miles of public storm sewer mains. 

As a water consumer in Glencoe, your 

quarterly water and sewer payments are 

invested directly back into the operation 

and maintenance of our community’s water 

production and distribution systems. 

Vehicle Stickers 

and Animal Licenses 

Purchase renewal/new stickers and 

licenses online at www.villageofglencoe.org/pay 

The Village mails renewal letters for Vehicle 

Stickers and Animal Licenses each spring— 

new stickers and tags must be in use by 

May 1. All pet licenses are $20. A Village of 

Glencoe Vehicle License is required for all 

vehicle(s) registered in the State of Illinois 

with an address within the corporate 

boundaries of Glencoe and pet owners are 

required to purchase a Glencoe Animal 

License for any cat(s) or dog(s) 6 months in 

age. County rabies certificate information 

is required for all Animal Licenses. 

In 2019, you have the option to show 

off your love for Glencoe with a 

commemorative Sesquicentennial vehicle 

license sticker! This special license, 

featuring an exclusive Sesquicentennial 

design, may be purchased $100. $50 

of each $100 license will go toward the 

festivities. Regular license stickers may still 

be purchased for $50, with a discounted 

rate of $25 for seniors. 


Lakeshore Recycling 

Systems 

Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS) 

provides, garbage, recycling and yard waste 

collection services to Village of Glencoe 

residents. To start or change service, report 

missing collection or inquire about billing, 

please call LRS at (773) 685-8811. 

Garbage and Recycling 

Holiday Service Schedule 

When a holiday falls on a Monday, 

Tuesday, Thursday or Friday, regular 

garbage and recycling services will resume 

one day later than normal (i.e. if New Year’s 

Day is on Monday, Monday collection 

will be Tuesday and Tuesday collection 

will be Wednesday, with regular service 

resuming on Thursday). If a holiday falls on 

a Wednesday from April – December, yard 

waste collection will be delayed by one 

day, but garbage and recycling collection 

will not be impacted. 

LRS observes the following holidays: New 

Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence 

Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and 

Christmas Day. 

Garbage Collection

Village of Glencoe residents have the 

option of selecting from back door or 

curbside garbage collection, with pick-up 

either once or twice week by LRS. Curbside 

cart size options are 65-or 95-gallons. Topof-drive 

service options are a 65-gallon 

cart, or residents can choose to use their 

own independently-purchased containers 

which can be no larger than 44-gallons 

with handles for lifting and tight fitting 

covers (maximum of three). The 44-gallon 

containers will not be collected if they are 

in a gated area or enclosed structure. 

For residents who are physically unable 

to bring garbage to the curb, LRS offers 

a Garbage Collection Hardship Program. 

Learn about this program and how to 

apply by calling LRS. 

Garbage must be out for collection by 7 

a.m., but please do not place items at the 

curb more than 24 hours in advance. 

Recycling Collection 

Recycling is also collected by LRS. Pickup 

is once a week on residents’ primary 

garbage collection day. Place 95-gallon 

recycling carts at the curb, with handle 

facing your house, no later than 7 a.m. on 

the day of collection. Mix all recyclable 

materials together in the cart (no separation 

is necessary with single stream recycling). 

Please do not bag recycling materials— 

items should be loose in the cart. 

Combined Yard Waste 

and Food Scrap Collection 

Yard waste is collected on Wednesdays 

beginning mid-April through mid- 

December 

Glencoe’s new combined curbside yard 

waste and composting service with LRS allows 

residents to dispose of compostable materials 

such as fruit and vegetable peels, egg 

shells, coffee grounds, paper napkins and 

yard waste in a biodegradable paper yard 

waste bags, or curbside bins between April 

and mid-December. There are two options 

for using the service: subscription (annual 

payment) and volume-based (stickers). Please 

note, the composting service is available if 

you do not need yard waste collection. 

Yard Waste Subscription: Yard waste 

subscribers may place unlimited bags 

or bundles of combined food scrap and 

landscape waste material at the curb 

each week on Wednesdays from mid- 

April through mid-December. The annual 

subscription fee is included on your 

quarterly bill and does not require yard 

waste stickers. To subscribe contact LRS at 

(773) 685-8811. 

Yard Waste Stickers: Residents not 

subscribing to the annual combined 

food scrap and yard waste collection 

subscription service, must affix stickers to 

each biodegradable paper yard waste bag, 

garbage can no larger than 44-gallons, or 

bundle of branches/brush. Stickers may 

be purchased at the Village Hall or Grand 

Food Center. 

Semi-Annual Clean-Up Days 

The Village offers residents two Clean- 

Up Days, one in May and one in October 

of each year. Clean-up days are an 

opportunity for residents to dispose 

of “bulk items” that are not generally 

included in garbage collection (furniture, 

mattress, carpet, boxes, etc.). However, 

hazardous waste (paint, gas, chemicals, 

etc.), electronics (computers, stereos, 

etc.), building materials (wood, lumber, 

drywall, etc.) and landscape waste (trees, 

branches, logs, leaves, etc.) are not 

included in this program. 

While the Village is happy to offer this 

service, we encourage residents to 

consider alternatives to the landfill before 

setting items at the curb. To learn about

Special Collections 

and Supplemental Pick-Up Services 

If you need bulk item collection outside 

of the Village’s two Clean-Up Days, LRS 

provides special pick-up options. A special 

pick-up is for anything other than your 

regular household waste (furniture, mattress, 

carpet, boxes, etc.). As with the Clean-Up 

Day program – this program does not 

include hazardous waste, building materials 

and landscape waste. This program does 

include white goods and appliances 

(washers, dryers, refrigerators, etc.). 

A supplemental pick-up can also be 

scheduled if you anticipate having an 

event that will generate more garbage 

than your regular container can hold. 

To schedule a special collection or 

supplemental pick-up for your household, 

please call LRS at (773) 685-8811. 24 hour 

minimum notice is required. All special 

collection materials must be brought to 

the curb and must weigh no more than 50 

pounds. Residents are permitted to fill the 

same number of garbage containers as

The Village’s Business Services Team works 

with prospective and existing businesses in 

Glencoe to develop and maintain relationships, 

streamline licensing and permitting processes 

and to foster business retention and expansion. 

The overall goal of the team is to help enhance 

and promote a strong local economy that, in 

turn, supports municipal services and Glencoe’s 

high quality of life.

Program (a 50/50 façade improvement costsharing 

program), community membership in the

Parking and Transportation 

Located approximately 20 miles north of 

downtown Chicago, Glencoe is easily accessible 

off I-94 (Edens Expressway), by Metra commuter 

rail (Union Pacific North Line) as well as the CTA 

Purple Line with a connection to Pace Suburban 

Bus service (line 213). There are also summer 

shuttles to the Chicago Botanic Garden from the 

Glencoe Metra station. 

Downtown Glencoe 

Customer Parking 

Short-term parking (2 hours or less) is found on 

most streets in the downtown business district. 

Time limits are enforced from 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m. 

daily with the exception of Sundays and the 

following holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial 

Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and 

Christmas Day. 

Shoppers who need to park for longer than two 

hours can use the commuter lots located north 

and south of Park Avenue near the Glencoe 

Metra station. The lots are free after 10 a.m. 

and are just a three- to four-minute walk away 

from downtown shops, restaurants and other 

community locations. The commuter lots are 

also free on Saturdays and Sundays and during 

public holidays. 

Commuter Parking 

Lot Permits 

Purchase quarterly and annual permits online at 

www.villageofglenoce.org/pay 

Commuters, employees and customers may 

purchase parking permits to allow them to 

park all day in various lots around the Glencoe 

Metra station. Permits are available at $270 

for an annual permit or $75 for a quarterly 

permit. Please note that annual permits are only 

available for purchase before May 31, and go 

into effect in March of each year. Daily permits 

may be purchased for $2 per day in-person at 

Village Hall or at the commuter lot coin box. 

Permit parking in the commuter lot is enforced 

weekdays until 10 a.m. Free commuter lot 

parking is available after that time, as well as 

on Saturdays and Sundays and during public 

holidays. 

Business District 

Employee Parking 

To ensure ample parking for patrons of 

Glencoe’s downtown businesses, the Village 

makes special business district permits (B-Permit) 

for the Temple Court parking lot available to 

downtown area employees free-of-charge. 

B-Permit holders are prohibited from parking 

outside the designated parking areas during 

business hours and may be cited for violations. 

B-Permits are issued on March 1 of each year 

in conjunction with business license renewals. 

All outstanding parking tickets must be paid 

before issuance of a new permit. New business 

district employees may request an application 

anytime from the Public Safety Department 

during regular business hours (8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., 

Monday-Friday). If waiting for a B-Permit to be 

issued, a daily parking pass may be obtained 

from Public Safety.

Glencoe Youth Services (GYS), 

founded in 1971, is a drop 

in teen center providing 

recreational activities and 

social services opportunities for 

6th-12th grade youth. Located 

in the Holmes Warming House, 

in between Central School and 

Melvin Berlin Park, GYS is open 

every day after school and 

on Saturday during the day. 

The youth center provides a 

welcoming atmosphere where 

youth relax, talk with friends, 

and engage in their choice of 

many recreational activities, 

such as video games, crafts, 

board games, movies, and 

cooking. Our participants 

also engage in social services 

activities such as Operation 

Gratitude, A Just Harvest, 

and Cradles to Crayons. GYS 

is active at the 4th of July 

Festival, Harvest Fest, Movies 

on the Green and hosts many 

other community programs 

throughout the year. 

Several of our most active 

participants volunteer on 

our youth board. Youth 

board members develop 

leadership skills and learn 

to work as a committee, as 

they hold multiple meetings 

a month, manage a budget, 

conduct fundraisers, create 

programming, and help with 

social media marketing.

quality programs in a variety of areas, 

• The Oasis Youth Center 

Located in Glencoe’s Central School 

for more than 40 years, the Oasis Youth 

Center provides a staffed, recreational 

space for 5-8th grade students to access 

during their lunch/ recess period. Led 

by GJHP Senior Program Director, 

Melissa Di Giacomo and Program 

Director, Grace Haggerty, the Oasis 

provides opportunities for Central 

School students to play games, engage

inclusive, supervised environment.

The GJHP Civic Engagement Program

volunteering at the Uptown Café, A Just 

Harvest, Bernie’s Book Bank, CJE Senior

GJHP plans and sponsors a variety 

of social events for Glencoe middle

For 45 years, the GJHP coordinates 

several theatrical productions each year 

for the purpose of building community 

through the arts. The GJHP, no-cut 

theatrical productions are performed for 

the local school and village community,

The New Trier Township High School District 

consists of a comprehensive four-year 

high school on two campuses which serve 

the North Shore suburban communities 

of Glencoe, Kenilworth, Wilmette and 

Winnetka, most of Northfield, and parts of 

Glenview and Northbrook. Program offers a 

comprehensive curriculum of 300 courses, 

with several levels in each academic subject 

in each year. Students may work at different 

levels in different subjects. Provides one 

of the nation’s first advisement programs, 

in which a teacher may serve as an adviser 

to some 25 students, meeting with this 

same group of advisees daily throughout 

their high school years. An adviser is 

the student’s first resource in matters 

of personal adjustment and academic 

counseling. The adviser assignment takes 

the place of one period of the teaching

GLENCOE FRENCH MARKET 

The Glencoe French Market has returned 

to Wyman Green on Saturdays from 

9 a.m. to 1 p.m. this summer and will run 

through October 19. The Chamber is 

again pleased to partner with the Village 

of Glencoe and the Glencoe Park District 

in bringing the Market to our residents 

and friends. The Market offers flowers, 

produce, fruit, artisinal and imported 

goods and more. The Market is the 

“place to be” on Saturday mornings; 

neighbors gather to shop, see each 

other and visit with Village Officials, 

Chamber members and representatives 

from other local organizations. 

HALLOWEEN HELLO 

Children from toddler to pre-teen will 

enjoy this annual day of trick or treating 

fun in the downtown business district on 

Thursday, October 31. 

LIGHT THE VILLAGE LIGHTS 

Glencoe’s annual kick-off to the holiday 

season will be held on Friday, November 

29 at the big tree on the northwest corner 

of Park and Vernon Avenues. There will 

be carolers, holiday treats and a visit 

from Santa. 

Small business saturday 

The holiday mood will continue the 

following day, Nov. 30th, with many 

of our stores participating in Small 

Business Saturday in the downtown 

business district.. 

DECEMBER FESTIVITIES 

On Saturdays in December, there will be 

events, treats, activities, music and fun

TAKIFF CENTER 

The Takiff Center hosts year-round 

programming for tots through adults, 

including fitness, athletics, full and halfday 

preschool programs, daycare, music, 

drama, creative arts, cultural explorations, 

and much more. The 80,000 square foot 

facility includes a fitness center, gym, 

activity rooms, a ceramics studio, as well as 

multi-functional spaces and a breathtaking 

Community Hall. A variety of 

rental spaces are available 

for large and small events, 

from community meetings 

to family celebrations, 

making the Takiff Center 

a welcoming place for our 

community to gather.

GLENCOE BEACH 

Right in your own backyard is Lake 

Michigan’s most beautiful spot on the 

North Shore, Glencoe Beach. The beach 

is ideal for group and family outings, work 

picnics, or summer camp groups! During 

the summer months, Glencoe Beach is the 

place to go for a leisurely day in the sun or 

an active day of sailing, paddle boarding, 

kayaking or beach volleyball. The Paul & 

Adda Safran Sprayground, with interactive 

water features and playground pieces, is 

a great spot for kids to splash and play on 

a warm day. The beach also features sun 

shelters and a shaded Trellis, which can be 

rented for casual parties or large events. 

Lifeguards are on duty daily during beach 

season, and season passes are available for 

purchase. Kayaks, sailboats, and stand-up 

paddleboards are available to rent hourly 

during the beach season. 

WATTS recreation CENTER 

One of the North Shore’s only outdoor 

refrigerated ice rinks is at Watts Recreation 

Center. During the winter months, Watts 

Recreation Center offers a variety of 

programs, including figure skating, hockey, 

and broom ball. Throughout the year, Watts 

Center also offers before and after school 

care, enrichments, camps, and special 

events. In addition to two outdoor rinks, 

Watts Park features a sledding hill, a Frisbee 

golf course, tennis courts, and ball fields. 

PARKS 

Kalk Park and Veteran’s Memorial Park are 

Glencoe’s “front lawn,” and a gathering 

place on summer holidays and special 

holidays. Liza’s Gazebo is a favorite spot 

for summer concerts and family picnics. 

Our specialty parks and playgrounds, 

like Friends Park and Shelton Park, are 

gathering places for families with young 

children, providing opportunities for play 

time and a lifetime of memories. A string 

of neighborhood parks line both sides of 

the Union Pacific train tracks, enhancing 

the bucolic environment that attracts us to 

Glencoe and provides natural green space.

The Glencoe Golf Club is a public golf course with the feel of a 

private club. You’ll find a challenging 18-hole golf course with one 

of the finest practice facilities on the North Shore, a restaurant with 

a fabulous patio and a teaching academy. Greens fees are offered 

in a variety of price points, with special pricing for seniors. Practice 

facility features include an all-grass tee area, practice bunker, 

separate chipping and pitching areas, and a putting-only green. 

The restaurant has a full menu and is suited to host golf outings 

or special events and the Glencoe Golf Academy offers many 

programs for beginners, juniors and advanced golfers. Come out 

and enjoy all the amenities of your local Golf Club; we are right 

around the corner. 

Seniors golfers will enjoy savings at the Club all year long by joining 

the Senior Membership Program. This $25.00 membership will 

allow senior golfers, at least 60 years old, to play at a discounted 

rate every day of the week, with some time restrictions. Stop in the 

golf shop to sign up for the program and start saving with your 

first round. The Club also has a specific set of tees for seniors. The 

Silver Tees were designed with the senior golfer in mind; the total 

yardage is set up to allow you to reach the green in regulation while 

still remaining competitive in length. Come out and play on tees 

that were created with your game and enjoyment in mind. 

The Glencoe Golf Academy offers private lessons, group golf 

instruction and half-day summer camps taught by our staff of 

PGA certified instructors. Lessons utilize the latest in teaching 

technology to make the learning process faster and easier. 

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced golfer, we will 

create a program to meet your individual needs, goals and time

Founded in 1937, the Glencoe 

Historical Society promotes 

Glencoe’s history and heritage 

by identifying and preserving 

objects, documents and 

photographs. In the 82 years 

since its founding, the allvolunteer 

GHS has grown 

from a small collection of 

documents housed in two file 

cabinets at the Glencoe Public 

Library, to a national-awardwinning 

organization that 

hosts exhibits, lectures, events 

and a community research 

center. Today’s museum 

campus consists of the 375 

Park Avenue Museum, the 

377 Park Avenue Museum 

and Research Center, and the 

fabulous Eklund Garden. The 

museum buildings and Eklund 

Garden were generously 

donated by Sara C. “Sally” 

Eklund in the late 1990s. 

Our full-service Research 

Center is located at 377 Park 

Avenue. Through the years, 

the collection has expanded 

significantly as residents and 

community organizations 

have donated letters, 

pictures, newspapers, tools 

and artifacts, including many 

one-of-a-kind items such as 

the sign from Anson Taylor’s 

LaPier Inn, a structure which 

predated the incorporation 

of the Village of Glencoe

The newest and by far 

most interactive exhibit 

ever presented at the GHS 

Museum focusses on the 

Sesquicentennial of Glencoe’s 

incorporation in 1869. This 

new exhibit features the 150 

inaugural inductees into the 

Glencoe Hall of Fame. These 

individuals, who were born in, 

lived in, or worked in Glencoe, 

and who made significant 

contributions to the village or 

the world, are celebrated with 

photos and brief biographies 

of each individual. Additional 

exhibit displays also include 

replicas of the Taylorsport 

lighthouse which briefly stood 

near the foot of Harbor Street, 

the Glencoe train station, 

constructed in 1891, and 

the former Glencoe theater, 

a community entertainment 

venue on Vernon Avenue 

which existed from 1940- 

1979. An extensive timeline 

presentation identifies 

significant events during the 

last 150 years which occurred 

in Glencoe, the nation, and 

the world. 

The Society has been working 

with the Village of Glencoe 

since 2017 to plan and 

organize a year-long, multievent 

commemoration of 

this milestone anniversary.

History of Glencoe

Each May, Glencoe’s second graders explore our central business 

district, looking at pictures of intersections at various times in 

history, and reflecting on what has changed over time. What 

features were present ”then” and what looks different ”now?” 

Glencoe has changed over the years, but physically, it looks 

similar to the town that was established and began to grow in the 

late 19th Century. 

Glencoe started as an agricultural hamlet, home to farms, a 

lumber yard, and a stagecoach stop. Over time it evolved into 

a suburban community with a central business district, and now 

can boast additional business districts north of Scott Avenue 

in Hubbard Woods, and along the Edens Expressway frontage 

road. Homes that were built shortly after the time Glencoe 

was incorporated in l869 still stand today next to those built 

more recently. 

Prior to formal settlement of the area, Native American 

Potawatomies used the densely forested land along the Lake 

Michigan shore for hunting. In the late 1830s, Anson H. Taylor, 

storekeeper and future stage coach inn owner, moved with his 

family from Chicago to begin a new life. He named the area 

Taylorsport - after himself. He built a small settlement which 

included a lake pier and an inn and post office, supporting local 

farms created by English and German immigrants who joined the 

Taylors before the Civil War. 

Development increased after the 1855 arrival of the railroad. 

The station was located across from the house of Walter S. 

Gurnee, president of the Chicago and Milwaukee Railroad (later 

the Chicago and North Western and now Metra and the Union 

Pacific). Gurnee was a real estate speculator, as well as a former 

mayor of Chicago. He located the depot near his house after 

Anson Taylor rejected the idea of combining railroad and stage

coach stops. The town subsequently grew up around the train. 

It is possible that Gurnee also gave Glencoe its name after his 

Scottish roots, or perhaps he named the village after his fatherin-law, 

Matthew Coe, from whom he bought the stock farm and 

home (Coe’s Glen). 

In 1867 Dr. Alexander Hammond bought Gurnee’s home. 

Hammond enlisted nine other men to join him, creating what we 

know as The Glencoe Company (or “The Glencoe Ten”), whose 

goal was to create a stable community. Each man agreed to build 

a house for himself and to build and sell another to someone 

else. The Glencoe Company agreed to maintain a park at the 

lakefront in perpetuity and to fund a community church and 

a school. Unfortunately, the real estate declines of the 1870s 

severely impacted most of the members of the group, including 

Dr. Hammond. However, the village they founded, platted and 

incorporated on March 29, 1869 began to thrive. With the 

presence of the railroad, Glencoe developed into a commuter 

community and summer home getaway. 

The early German settlers and farmers, including the Diettrich 

and Beinlich families, were joined by many new residents in the 

growing village. Through the Second World War, this influx of 

people transformed the village into a more suburban than rural 

community. Diversity was increased as African Americans and 

additional ethnic groups established their homes in Glencoe. 

Glencoe’s downtown (or “uptown” as many “more mature” 

residents call it) has also witnessed a number of changes. The 

village has never contained a sprawling commercial center, but 

the compact central business district has always been active and

vital. Originally, there were blacksmith shops and feed stores. 

From 1902 to 1993, the business district’s principle anchor was 

Henry C. Wienecke’s (“Win-eh-keys”) hardware store. After the 

family sold the store, the Wienecke property was converted 

into residential and retail spaces. The Glencoe Movie Theater, 

on Vernon Avenue, was razed in 1979, as was its neighbor, the 

Masonic Temple. Christophe’s, a five-and-dime store departed 

when BMO Harris Bank built its drive-through lanes in the late 

1970s. Reflecting the evolving needs of the community, small 

grocery stores, barber shops, and soda fountains have been 

supplanted by cleaners, clothing boutiques, and banks. 

Glencoe’s population increased steadily from the turn of the 

century through 1960. This required growth from the single 

all-village school to four schools: Central, South, and North, 

all built in the 1920s and 1930’s, and West School, opened in 

1957. The community was considered fully developed when 

the last major subdivision, Strawberry Hill, was completed in the 

1950s. Subsequent village residential development has occurred 

primarily through subdivision of existing larger properties into 

multiple smaller tracts. Village population declined after the 

1950s, forcing the 1976 closure of West School and the 1979 

closure of North School- now reconfigured and expanded to 

create the Takiff Center, headquarters of the Glencoe Park District. 

In the early 1990s, the population pendulum swung upward once 

more, prompting the 1992 re-opening of West School. 

While the Village continues to evolve, Glencoe still retains a 

small-town feel, holding tightly to its heritage.

The Village of Glencoe is celebrating its 150th anniversary of 

incorporation in 2019! To commemorate the milestone and 

Glencoe’s vibrant history, the Village has partnered with the Glencoe 

Historical Society to plan a years-worth of events and activities. The 

celebration includes four main elements: education, celebration, 

participation and appreciation. Here’s a recap of the events which 

have occurred to date and a preview of what you can look forward to 

in the remainder of 2019: 

EDUCATION: 

Glencoe 150 Hall of Fame Dinner – Hosted by John Kastl, 

with featured speaker Ann Compton, this event revealed the 

inaugural class of residents who have played significant roles in the 

establishment, development and growth of the village. 

Glencoe Library Program Series – The Glencoe Public Library 

program series has already presented “Generations,” a program 

about multi-generational families in the village, and will in coming 

months feature programs about the village’s varied architectural 

fabric and the religious institutions which figure prominently in our 

village’s history. 

Sesquicentennial Kiosk – This educational resource, located near 

the reference desk in the Glencoe Library, features interactive 

computer screens which describe upcoming Sesquicentennial 

events, moments in Glencoe history, and questions meant to 

challenge your knowledge of village history, residents, officials, and 

institutions 

While several wildly popular events have already taken place, and 

plans are underway for the remainder, the Sesquicentennial Planning 

Committee still needs your help! If you haven’t already done so, the 

Committee invites any individual interested in serving on a planning 

subcommittee to fill out the “Get Involved” form on the Glencoe 150

“I Love This Town” – March 18, 2019 – A one-of-a-kind musical 

review was commissioned to celebrate the village in song, and 

performed by professional actors in a one night only presentation at 

Writers’ Theater. 

Glencoe Birthday Celebration– March 29, 2019 – The Village hosted 

a birthday party marking the actual day of incorporation in 1869. The 

official Sesquicentennial flag was hoisted at Village Hall, and various 

historic records from the village archive were displayed for the public 

to view. 

Glencoe Open Doors – September 2019 – Places and spaces 

normally not open to the public will be opening their doors for tours. 

Sesquicentennial Gala – October 19, 2019 – The Sesquicentennial 

Planning Committee and a Gala Committee comprised of volunteer 

residents will host an evening to remember at the Chicago 

Botanic Garden. 

PARTICIPATION: Glencoe residents have been asked to each 

dedicate 150 minutes to volunteer in some capacity within or 

representing Glencoe. 

APPRECIATION: The Glencoe community will be engaged in 

defining, designing and securing funding for a legacy project to mark 

the milestone for generations to enjoy.
