Whether your clients are jetting off on holiday or indulging in
a (hopefully sunny) staycation here, chances are they’ll want their
hair to reflect the summer season: think glossy balayages, hydrating
treatments and beachy waves. We spoke to some of the nation’s top
hairdressers to find out how they’re getting their businesses and their
clients ready for the warmer months. Turn to page 36 to discover the
services, techniques and products that get temperatures soaring. We’ve
also got all the results from the 2019 L’Oréal Colour Trophy Ireland
Grand Final – relive the night from page 28. And talking of competitions,
I’m very excited to reveal the finalists for Creative HEAD’s 2019 Most
Wanted and The List Awards. For the first time ever all categories
were open to Irish hairdressers and salons, so I hope you’ll join me
cheering on the finalists on 2 September at Printworks in London.
All the information you need is on page 18 – I’m already
counting the days!

THE NEWS AND KNOW-HOW FROM YOUR INDUSTRY
John Vial
TD CALLS FOR
OVERSEAS
BARBERS
TO COMBAT
SHORTAGE
INDEPENDENT TD Noel Grealish has asked
Minister for Business, Heather Humphreys,
to allow barbers from overseas to work in
Ireland to help cope with surging demand.
Barbers and hairdressers are currently on
the ineligible categories of employment list,
which means those from outside the EU
are banned from applying for work permits
here. Jobs.ie reported the number of jobs in
hair and barbering had risen by 105 per cent
between 2012 and 2017, and credited this to
the ‘barbering boom’. Noel Grealish called on
the minister to remove the trade from the list
“in view of the fact that there is a significant
shortage of barbers nationwide”. In reply, the
minister said that organisations in the sector
would need to provide the necessary data to
substantiate their claims. She said: “A detailed,
evidence-based case for removal of barbers
from the ineligible list… would then need to
be put forward for review and consideration.”
The IHF had previously asked for hairdressing
and barbering to be removed from the list in
2016, but this request was refused. “We were
told there wasn’t evidence to support what
we were proposing,” explained Greg Koster,
owner and managing director of Hermans
Hairdressing and Knights of the Green.
“I would say that the lack of response to
job adverts and poaching of staff would
be evidence that there is a shortage of
skilled people. The change wouldn’t
mean an influx of workers, it would mean
an employer would be allowed to apply
for a work permit for a specific person to
have a job in that company.”

Most Wanted
and The It List
Ken O’Rourke
THERE WAS A host of famous and renowned faces at this year’s judging
sessions for the Most Wanted and The It List. Industry legends and former
award winners including Leigh Keates, John Vial and Syd Hayes teamed up
with other heavyweights, including Marie Claire’s Lisa Oxenham and Theresa
Yee from trend forecaster WGSN, to whittle down the record number of entries
to our finalist line-up of 105 names. For 2019, all Most Wanted categories
and The It List were open to Irish competitors, while two new Most Wanted
categories were introduced with Best New Boutique Salon and Independent
Stylist. The Grand Final takes place on Monday 2 September at the incredible
Printworks, the former home of newspapers such as the London Evening
Standard. See who made the final shortlists from page 28!
SAVE THE DATE!
The Fantastic Hairdresser Awards will this year be taking place
on the 20 October in a celebration of creativity across six live
categories. There’s a photographic competition and three
business categories – the Marketing Award, Fantastic Salon
Award and Hairdresser Award. The action-packed day will
also include two hair shows, one from the ALFAPARF Milano
Nexxt Generation team and one from Paul Stafford. xpertpro.ie

PAUL DAVEY HELPS TO LEAD GFW 2019 SHOW
Irish hairdresser Paul Davey helped lead the hair at Graduate Fashion Week 2019 in East
London, as the five-day event shone the spotlight on emerging design talent. The Truman
Brewery was buzzing with inspiration and ideas as 40 universities from around the world
presented the latest collections from their graduates. On hand backstage was the L’Oréal
Professionnel Portfolio Team, led by Paul, co-owner of Davey Davey, and Nicole Iroh from
Headmasters. Together they created ballerina buns and super-slick ponytails, tied with gold
ribbon for the GFW Gala Award Show.

THE BUSINESS EDIT
HOW TO BOOST
YOUR PRICES
BOZENA SAREK
BOZENA SAREK
Loyal customers are
everything. It takes a while, but
build relationships with your
customers – it’s an investment
in your own financial future.
Learn from your mistakes. If
something doesn’t work, don’t
give up! Just stop for a moment
and think “how can I do it
better?” Or maybe next time
delegate it to others in the salon
and focus on what you’re good at.
Teamwork makes the dream
work. When we help each other
then our clients are happy,
and at the end of the day we
are all happy!
Who will sell your product best,
if not you? My clients used to
see large pictures of avant-garde
hairstyles on the walls in the
salon and thought they were
magazines posters. When I told
them it was my work they could
not believe it! It was a great
advertisement for the salon.
Numbers never lie. During
nine years of running a hair
salon, I have learned a lot about
this! Just like how the colour
numbers tell me what colour I
will achieve, my salon’s accounts
tell me about my business.
SELLING A GREAT PRODUCT or service
is no longer enough. In these times of fickle
customers, rising rents and the recent
increase in VAT for hairdressing to 13.5 per
cent, it’s harder than ever to turn a profit,
even if you feel like you’re doing everything
right. So, how can you ensure that you’ve got
enough money coming in? One solution is to
implement a price increase. It’s obvious why
this can be seen as a controversial decision
– why would you risk pushing away existing
customers and make your salon seem less
appealing to potential ones? However, it’s a
case of valuing your services correctly.
“Salons are not charities,” says John
Hickey, operations director at The Greene
Room. “In Ireland, rising costs range from
VAT increases to minimum wage changes.
We are businesses and in order to continue
providing excellent services to our clients,
our prices have to reflect our costs and a
desire to make a profit.”
When it comes to setting prices, Danielle
Kennedy, owner of Lloyds in Waterford,
believes that you need to focus on your
own business, rather than be distracted
by what other salons are charging. “We
review our prices at the end of every year.
Unfortunately more often than not the
prices do increase. Based on our costs we
establish an average per hour target that we
need to take on services. This can be where
people go wrong because they can look at
their competitors’ prices and try to compete
with them – but your competitors have
different costs and different salon policies
to you. Your prices should be based on your
salon operations and costs.”
Of course, timing is everything – so when
should you bite the bullet and bump those
numbers up? “Prices should be increased
only after you have really crunched the
numbers and know why you need to
increase your prices,” adds John Hickey.
“We always inform our clients of
upcoming increases, we usually know by
November if our prices are going up in
January and have our new price lists there
for clients to view,” explains Danielle. “I find
this is a good time because all of your clients
will be visiting the salon over the Christmas
period so they will be informed.”
According to John, a successful price
increase doesn’t just bring in more revenue
– it also makes your clients value your
services more and can even result in them
coming back more frequently. “You need
to look critically at what you are providing
right now. For example, do you charge for
toner?” he asks. “If not, then this is an
opportunity to educate your client, provide
value to the colour service, and get that
client back in your chair in five to six weeks,
building both loyalty and revenue.”
In, fact, a price increase can help you
think about how to make your services even
better than before – and it doesn’t always
have to cost you money. “Price increases can
be a great way to keep you on your toes – if
you’re putting up your prices year-on-year,
you have to up your game accordingly,”
says Danielle. “It doesn’t have to be free
champagne, it can be the little nuggets that
add to your clients’ experience that don’t
cost you anything. This year we had a VAT
and trainee wage increase, and had to put
up our prices more than ever before in one
chunk. So, we decided we needed to add
more to our client experience in our salons
and expanded on our basin ritual.”
And it’s essential that your staff have
the answers to any queries about rising
prices, adds Danielle. “We also ensure all
the team members are up to speed as to why
the prices are increasing, so that they can
explain to the clients exactly why. There will
always be a few clients that leave with every
increase, but in my experience when you’re
open and honest about increases, clients are
very understanding.”

WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE A HAIRDRESSER?
I love making people feel good about themselves, it’s a privilege to be able to offer
that to someone and give each individual a bespoke hairstyle. I also think there’s
an amazing vibe in salons, there’s always a great buzz and a sense of community
that I love.
WHAT ARE YOUR HIGHLIGHTS SO FAR?
Taking part in competitions such as the IHF Championships and the L’Oréal
Colour Trophy. You learn so much about yourself in the process. 2018 was a massive
highlight for me as I took home second place in the IHF Fantasy category, which
I’ve grown a great love for. I’ve also qualified from my apprenticeship with a
distinction – that was my goal when I started at Davey Davey. I feel incredibly
grateful to the team as they
have supported me every
step of the way.
LILY HAND
SALON: DAVEY DAVEY

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS’ TIME?
Hopefully at the height of my career – the idea of New
York and London fashion weeks really excite me so
I’d love to make a name for myself. Being able to travel
around the world with my craft also appeals to me, so I plan
to further my expertise. I hope I’ll be a senior technician
with a well-established client base and I strive to become as
successful as the hairdressers I admire.
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM HAIRDRESSING GIG?
I’d love to be working as an international hairstylist like Adir
Abergel, his work really is art. He’s amazing and so versatile
– from styling celebrities for big events to working on big
photoshoots, he’s definitely a hero of mine.

Inside
story
SOUTH BY KAZUMI, DUBLIN
Kazumi has been a success in Dublin for more than 20 years and this year
owner Mark McCauley decided it was time to expand. He recruited Peter
O’Donnell as salon manager and set about creating a new space that stayed
true to Kazumi’s values. “When the opportunity to open in Monkstown arose
we knew it would be the perfect fi t,” says Peter. The new South salon ties
in with Kazumi but has a personality of its own. “The grey colour palette
is synonymous with the Kazumi brand so it was important to continue the
theme in South,” he adds. “The interiors are integral – we want to spoil our
clients with incredible haircuts and colour while they relax in a high-end,
tranquil environment.” Peter and Mark ensured the salon would be effi cient
without compromising on style. “It’s relatively small so we maximised the
space through clever lighting and mirrors,” Peter explains. “The arrangement
is minimalist, allowing stylists to work comfortably while providing an enjoyable
client experience. The inspiration for the interiors is a direct refl ection of our
work – modern, clean and sharp with zero fuss.”

CREATIVE HEAD IRELAND
Once a year Ireland’s top colourists gather to showcase their talent and fashion-forward visions:
it can only be the L’Oréal Colour Trophy Ireland Grand Final. Taking place in Clayton Hotel on
Burlington Road, Dublin, the event was hosted by Ruth O’Neill, and kicked off with a champagne
reception, before guests were treated to a sumptuous dinner and hair shows from some of the top
creative minds in the industry. And, when it came to crowning this year’s Colour Trophy winners,
the judges truly had their work cut out – Adam Reed (Percy & Reed), Siobhan Jones (Rose & Wild),
Claire Chell (Francesco Group), Mark Woolley (Electric Hairdressing), Nathan Walker (Trevor Sorbie)
and Alan Edwards (Alan Edwards Salons) had the difficult task of selecting the top looks for 2019.

MORE THAN
a feeling
The awards are only part of the
L’Oréal Colour Trophy experience
– the rest arrived in the form of
two hair shows. This year, Emotive
Feelings from Brooks & Brooks and
Through the Kaleidoscope, with
Richard Phillipart of The Boutique
Atelier assisted by Brown Sugar,
Hession Hairdressing and Zeba,
were big and bold. The message
was clear: the possibilities of
hairdressing are limitless.
Emive Feelin
BY BROOKS & BROOKS
Iconic hairdressers Sally and Jamie
Brooks led a show that explored the
feelings provoked by the landscapes
around us. Wispy, light-as-air hair gave
way to rich textures and shimmering
wet looks. By looking at things on an
elemental level the result was both
simple and powerful, encouraging an
appreciation of the beauty of nature
and its influence on fashion.

most nutrient-rich ingredients on our planet. The Revlon
Professional EKSperience range has been inspired by the
ocean featuring scalp and hair in-salon treatments of incredible
quality that marry pure marine ingredients with cutting-edge
scientific research. The range is a revitalising combination of
beauty ritual and massage that leaves the client feeling serene

marine spring water, nutrient-rich algae and essential elements,
which are freshly mixed before treatments to achieve optimal
performance. With 20 years of research behind it, EKSperience
provides a synergy between unique sensory experiences and
outstanding results. This exclusive range of in-salon treatments
can be used to calm and treat issues such as a sensitive scalp,
excess sebum, hair loss and dandruff. Each formulation can
be mixed for a bespoke finish, made more effective by their
freshness. Ingredients include an extremely fine seaweed

which contains every essential amino acid and is packed
with protein. The Marine Algae Scalp treatment is mixed with
bespoke blends of essential oil extracts, depending on the
required effect. Choose from Dermo Calm for sensitive scalps,
Sebum Balancing for oily scalps, Revitalizing to tackle hair loss
concerns and Purifying for dandruff issues. Add a few drops of
the Hair Multivitamin Cocktail and you have a fresh, purifying
mask treatment to restore and soothe the scalp. For added
care, the Remineralizing Mud Pack can be worked into the
mid-lengths and ends for hydration that dives deep into the hair

Are you
ready for
your best
summer
ever?
AS THE TEMPERATURE RISES SO DOES YOUR SALON’S BUSINESS
POTENTIAL – IT’S TIME TO EMBRACE THIS SEASON’S TRENDS AND
GET YOUR CLIENTS’ HAIR LOOKING BEACH-READY
CAN YOU FEEL IT? Days are longer, the lashing rain is subsiding
and your clients are booking in for a new season revamp. Yup,
summer’s arrived! But do you put as much planning and effort
into the summer season as you do for the Christmas push?
Because when you think about all the extra care and attention
hair needs in the heat, the opportunities for those salons that are
savvy are huge…
When summer arrives, many clients want to refresh their colour
and add some brightness, so this is a great opportunity to brush
up your skills and inject some sunshine into their hair. “At Peter
Mark, we have been at the forefront of Irish style for 58 years
thanks to our renowned education and training – our highly trained
teams are constantly updated with the latest colour techniques,”
explains John Harvey of the Peter Mark Creative Team. “When
it comes to creating that perfect summer look we believe it’s all
about giving our teams the tools to confidently embrace their
creativity through learning.”
Make sure that you and your client know that their existing
colour can be adapted for a fresh summer style, and also that it
can be manipulated into a more autumnal look later in the year,
as Katherine Sweeney at PREEN explains. “Sun-kissed hair is
different for every client depending on different factors such as
their natural base and also the type of colour service they usually
have at the salon. For some clients it means a bright clean blonde
with lots of extra foil around the face if they are usually a highlight
client, or adding in some lighter creamy tones to an existing
balayage client. Summer can be a great time to introduce a client
to balayage that doesn’t usually have any colour in the hair. It can
be kept quite subtle and is also easy to tone down in the autumn.”
Bellissimo in Limerick specialises in contouring techniques
which are especially popular during the summer months and
personalised to suit each client. “All of our colour services are
bespoke,” says Louise Jordan, creative director and head of
education for the salon. “We tailor it to the guest in question upon
consultation and we also consider maintenance as it is a huge part
of this equation. Clients are looking for that Instagram look – very
clean blondes with contouring and also the possibility to tone
creatively without long-lasting commitment.”
“Hair contouring is similar to make-up contouring,” she explains.
“The objective is to accentuate certain areas of the hair to work
with the guest’s facial shape, brighten up the eye area and also to
complement their lifestyle. It usually involves sections of thread-like
highlights and thicker textured weaves. It doesn’t have to be upclose
to the root area as the key is to highlight certain areas. So,
on some guests you may only lighten or darken midway down
the hair and this is going to give a bespoke focus on the eyes.
This can also be used on underneath sections near the neck area
where hair usually appears finer in texture, to give the illusion of
fuller hair. The final result is a personalised colouring method that
will flatter the guest’s features and add movement.”

summer
At SitStil in Dublin, salon owner
Mark Doherty believes that
the key to beautiful summer
blondes is simplicity. “I keep my
technique simple for all colour. At
the moment I have ‘The B formula’
– balayage, babylites and backcomb.
These three techniques are key to any
seamless modern colour result that we want to achieve.”
And it’s important not to forget the possibilities opened up by
the use of toners. “Every blonde client gets a toner to suit their
particular needs. In some cases the customer would not know
what a toner entails, so we discuss if the client is going for a
beachy blonde look or a clean, icy finish.”
Blonde transformations can be notoriously difficult to create
and maintain, so ensure that you fully communicate with
your client about what to expect at every step of the way.
“Blonde clients want to be listened to,” says Cathy Bishop,
senior stylist at Gillian Edgeworth Hair Studio in Dublin.
“Unfortunately, social media showcases blonde images
that are just not achievable for every client. It is our
job, as trained professionals, to guide the client
through their individual blonde journey from the insalon
experience to their aftercare.”
With lighter hair, clients can embrace the trend
for unicorn hair at festivals and summer parties with
ease, safe in the knowledge that their colour can
go back to normal for the working week. “Although
the trend for the past few years has been balayage
due to the longevity of the colour, we are seeing
more all-over blonde tints being done in conjunction
with all the pastel and silver hair colours that are big
trend at the moment,” says Cathy. John Harvey at
Peter Mark agrees: “We are really seeing our clients
embracing a playfulness in their tonal choices.
Previously pinks and coral shades were popular
among Gen Z, but thanks to sophisticated pastel
tones, high-fashion yet low-commitment and playful
colouring are being embraced by an array of clients
who are looking to have some fun.”
Plus, with recent advances in technology, lightened
hair doesn’t have to mean weak, frazzled hair any
more. “The ‘plex’ innovation was a game-changer for
clients, colourists and salons in general, the likes of
which we have never seen before,” says Mark Doherty.
“It allowed us as hairdressers to achieve results which
kept the integrity of the hair and added shine. Plus,
JOICO’s Blonde Life and Defy Damage ranges are helping
clients understand the importance of homecare and, as
a result, greater sales for stylists.”
38
ALFAPARF Milano
and has super properties to prepare
clients for the sunny season,” says
Sarah Mason, owner of Sarah Mason
Professional. “When it comes to
suncare, it’s actually something I like to
offer all year round for ladies who love
to do outdoor activities. I am obsessed
with retail and the way it is stocked
on our shelves. Our guests love little
goodies – from travel sizes to turban
wrap towels and beautiful wooden
paddle brushes.”
“Retail makes a massive difference
to my business,” Sarah continues.
“Not only do I feel I am adding to the
professional service that we offer, I
believe it brings added trust and care
that holds the bond between you
and your client. Having everyone on
your team fully educated is the key
to success when it comes to selling
haircare all year round.”
Redken
And what about styling? With all the weddings, proms and
days at the races happening over summer, offering your
clients a menu of styles can make their decisions easier – and
you can combine it with make-up too. “Our PREEN ME menu
is particularly popular for summer wedding guests,” explains
Katherine McSweeney. “The package includes make-up and
either a blow-dry or up-do from our menu, which consists of
five popular looks. We find this simplifies things, but for clients
who want a more intricate up-style that isn’t shown on our
menu they can upgrade to a PREEN ME bespoke package.”
Clients are also willing to invest in some products for the
season, with UV protective products and brightening formulas
being particularly popular – especially for those who have
invested in their colour. “I love holiday haircare as it’s light, fresh

Beat the
black
market
IT’S ON THE RISE AND IT’S HARMING HIGH STREET BUSINESS – SO HOW CAN YOU
PROTECT YOUR SALON FROM THE THREAT OF UNDERGROUND TRADING?
42 CREATIVE HEAD IRELAND
WHEN YOU THINK OF the black market, the images
that spring to mind are dodgy dealings outside a pub –
fake handbags, pirated DVDs and so on. But a report by
accounting firm Grant Thornton estimates that the black
market costs the Irish economy close to €2.5 billion a year,
with €800 million of this a direct loss to the Exchequer. And
black market hairdressing is a part of this issue, with an
increasing number of hairdressers turning their back on the
salons they trained in for home visits and cash-in-hand.
These black market hairdressers are able to undercut their
legitimate counterparts due to having low or no overheads,
using lower quality products and avoiding or even evading
tax. This trend is encouraged by the rise of social media,
where black market hairdressers can post their work and
gain clients by using Instagram as a shop front.
However, it’s vital to distinguish between rogue traders
and legitimate freelancers. “There is a difference between
freelancers who are tax registered and have insurance, who
set up mini salons or who travel to homes where perhaps
people are unable to attend salons, compared with people
doing hair at home with no insurance and inferior products,”
says Lisa Eccles, owner of Zinc Hair and Beauty in Dublin.
The impact of the black market on the legitimate hair
industry is huge, with some salons struggling due to staff
leaving to go it alone, even after they have invested heavily
in them. “Many salons are finding that they are training staff
and then losing them,” says Bridget Haren, owner of Bridget
Haren Hair and Beauty in Ennis. “In addition, there’s an
issue with tax dodging, which means that black market
hairdressers can charge less for their services but can still
take home more money than someone working in a salon.
This is a major hurdle for the industry as many freelancers
claim minimum revenue to evade taxes. This is taking
clients away from salons and reducing the jobs available.”
Hairdressers who leave salons to work in the black market
also find themselves left behind when it comes to training.
Without a salon to organise or encourage attendance on
courses, they lack the knowledge of the latest processes.
“A lot of these stylists do not continue to upskill, which is a
focus for our team and gives clients constant access to new
techniques and trends,” says Bridget. “We provide in-salon
monthly training for our team from an industry educator
and this has enabled us to build a loyal client base.”
Lisa also outlines the issue surrounding salon owners
paying their staff cash in hand, which she considers to be
another form of black market trading. “This is damaging not
only for other salons who can find it difficult to compete, but
it’s also damaging for the staff who don’t realise that there is
no employer PRSI being paid on their behalf. So if they get
sick or go on maternity leave they may not be entitled to any
benefits. Equally, when they come to apply for a mortgage or
loan they will have issues as their payslip probably doesn’t
reflect what they are actually being paid.”
And the risks aren’t just economic: with untrained staff,
lax regulations and locations that are unfit for hairdressing,
sub-par services can lead to allergic reactions. “There is an
issue around insurance and health and safety when it comes
to the black market,” says Bridget Haren. “When a stylist
comes to a client’s residence rather than working in the
salon, they will not have the facilities to safely apply colour
and may not follow protocols for skin testing.”
So, how can you keep hold of your clients and stop them
turning to the black market which may be cheaper? “If a
client can’t afford a full-price salon experience there are
always other options,” says Lisa. “At Zinc we provide 50 per
cent off on training days and our salon does a 10 per cent
discount every Monday, so we hope this will keep clients
coming back.” She believes that as long as you can offer
something clients can’t get anywhere else, then you’ll hold
on to their custom. “Cients who enjoy the salon experience
are pretty unlikely to take up getting their hair done at
home. The service you can offer in a salon environment is a
totally different experience for them, with an entire range of
colours and service options to work with.”
Hugh Campbell, founder of Hugh Campbell Hair Group,
agrees that if clients feel like they’re getting a good deal in
the salon then they’ll stay loyal to you and won’t mind the
price difference. Clients also value convenience, so if you
can fit them in at a time that suits them, then they’ll be less
likely to turn to services at their home. “We understand
that life can get in the way and many clients find it difficult
to fit in appointments around their work and personal
commitments,” says Hugh. “We are flexible and ensure we
do our best to accommodate the needs of our clients. For us
this is just a commercial reality and must be addressed by
our service quality, the comfort of our salons and, above all,
the artistic ability of our hairdressers. Creating loyalty is a
huge part of growing a clientele and we are fortunate to have
dedicated clients committed to our brands and team.”
And this importance of loyalty also extends to your staff.
Although some quick cash might seem enticing for some,
good stylists will embrace the opportunity to be part of a
team and be supported in their goals. Ensure that you’re
offering them the incentive to stay part of your business, and
they’ll be happy to do so. “We want our team to achieve their
goals and help in whatever way we can to ensure success
is within their sights and achieved,” adds James O’Dwyer,
head of education at Hugh Campbell Hair Group.
And salons remain exciting places to work. “The training
and opportunities and also the salon spirit and support are
so important, especially for staff who have had children.
They love getting back into the salon and seeing their
colleagues and the support they all give each other,” says
Lisa. “In our salon it’s not just about professional growth
but personal growth, too. I’ve provided cognitive
behavioural therapy classes and opportunities such a
working at London Fashion Week – you just don’t get that
working in the black market.”
