S<strong>to</strong>ny Creek – The Road <strong>to</strong><br />
a Friendly Town is Never Long<br />
The “Biggest Little Town” in<br />
NY State has more than thirty<br />
thousand acres of Forest Preserve<br />
waiting for hikers, hunters and<br />
campers. Fresh mountain streams<br />
feed in<strong>to</strong> S<strong>to</strong>ny Creek and <strong>the</strong><br />
Hudson River, where native brook<br />
trout seek out <strong>the</strong> fisherman’s lure.<br />
Horseback riding trails wend <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
way through <strong>the</strong> woods, providing<br />
spectacular views of <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn<br />
<strong>Adirondacks</strong>.<br />
At <strong>the</strong> heart of S<strong>to</strong>ny Creek,<br />
<strong>the</strong> 4 Corners, also known as<br />
Creek Center, offers great food,<br />
entertainment and basic amenities.<br />

Along <strong>the</strong> winding roads, look for<br />
natural mountain water springs<br />
<strong>to</strong> quench your thirst. Bring your<br />
family <strong>to</strong> a campground on S<strong>to</strong>ny<br />
Creek, or enjoy <strong>the</strong> public park for<br />
a cook-out next <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> old fashioned<br />
swimming hole. Truly a place <strong>to</strong><br />
get away, S<strong>to</strong>ny Creek boasts fresh<br />
mountain air and a quiet reprieve.<br />
The <strong>to</strong>wn celebrates its heritage<br />
through <strong>the</strong> annual S<strong>to</strong>ny Creek<br />
Mountain Days Festival <strong>the</strong> first<br />
full weekend in August. Music in<br />
<strong>the</strong> Park is offered Tuesday evenings<br />
in July and August. Visit <strong>the</strong><br />
information lean-<strong>to</strong> at Creek Center<br />
and take a free map of <strong>the</strong> area for<br />
a self-guided driving <strong>to</strong>ur, locating<br />
trail heads, boat launches, or any of<br />
<strong>the</strong> local cemeteries dating <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Civil War. Remember, <strong>the</strong> road <strong>to</strong> a<br />
friendly <strong>to</strong>wn is never long.<br />

The Town of S<strong>to</strong>ny Creek is in <strong>the</strong><br />
southwest part of Warren County<br />
and is named for a stream that flows<br />
through it and is a main tributary<br />
directly <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hudson. The <strong>to</strong>wn<br />
was first settled in 1795 and <strong>the</strong>n<br />
incorporated in 1852 enclosing 82.4<br />
square miles. Known <strong>to</strong> many where<br />
“<strong>the</strong> road <strong>to</strong> a friendly <strong>to</strong>wn is never<br />
long.” The east <strong>to</strong>wn line is marked<br />
by <strong>the</strong> Hudson River and <strong>the</strong> west<br />
<strong>to</strong>wn line is <strong>the</strong> border of Hamil<strong>to</strong>n<br />
County. Fifty-two percent of <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>to</strong>wn's land is New York State<br />
Forest Preserve, mainly in <strong>the</strong><br />
western half of <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>wn and <strong>the</strong><br />
remaining is private ownership.<br />
The Hudson River Watershed<br />
All Warren County <strong>to</strong>wnships have a<br />
portion of <strong>the</strong>ir land that drains in<strong>to</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Upper Hudson River.<br />
S<strong>to</strong>ny Creek is one of 4 <strong>to</strong>wns <strong>to</strong><br />
have all of its land in <strong>the</strong> Hudson<br />
River Watershed. S<strong>to</strong>ny Creek <strong>the</strong><br />
stream, drains nearly 50% of that<br />
land mass. A few of <strong>the</strong> waters that<br />
form S<strong>to</strong>ny Creek are Lens Lake,<br />
Roaring Branch, Swears Creek,<br />
Willis Creek and Kenyon<strong>to</strong>wn<br />
Creek. S<strong>to</strong>ny Creek merges in<strong>to</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Hudson, south of <strong>the</strong> old<br />
S<strong>to</strong>ny Creek Station on <strong>the</strong><br />
Warrensburg Road.<br />
