Would you like <strong>to</strong> take a walk in <strong>the</strong><br />

woods? Over streams, through a rocky path,<br />

up <strong>to</strong> a summit overlook, or <strong>to</strong> a pond destination?<br />

The Chester Challenge offers walking<br />

and hiking trails for all ability levels,<br />

easy access and parking, and a nature-based<br />

experience. Most of <strong>the</strong> trails are available<br />

year-round, so bring your snow shoes or<br />

cross country skis in <strong>the</strong> winter months!<br />

Comprised of eight hiking and walking<br />

trails—you can choose a trail based on difficulty,<br />

time, and distance—<strong>the</strong> Chester Challenge<br />

begins just off Northway exit 25, only<br />

<strong>20</strong> minutes north of Lake George. Visit all<br />

eight trails and you will receive your choice of a patch or lapel pin.<br />

Thousands of people enjoy <strong>the</strong> trails, and you will <strong>to</strong>o!<br />

Chester Creek Trails • 1.2 <strong>to</strong> 1.9 miles / 45 min <strong>to</strong> 1 hr – parking<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Chester Municipal Center<br />

Take a leisurely stroll along <strong>the</strong>se mostly level trails. Enjoy <strong>the</strong><br />

varied views of <strong>the</strong> meandering Chester Creek and its surrounding<br />

wetlands, fields and woods that contain an abundant variety of flora<br />

and fauna. Hike this trail in <strong>the</strong> early morning and you are likely <strong>to</strong><br />

be rewarded with all sorts of wildlife sightings!<br />

Dynamite Hill and Caroline M. Fish Memorial Trails • 2.6 mi /<br />

1 hr – park at ei<strong>the</strong>r Dynamite Hill Route 8, Chester<strong>to</strong>wn or Caroline<br />

Dynamite Hill is a 4 season recreation area offering lighted tubing/sledding,<br />

downhill skiing, ice skating, x-country skiing during<br />

<strong>the</strong> winter; and hiking, single-track bicycling and picnicking during<br />

<strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong> year. It connects <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Caroline Fish Memorial Trail<br />

which is a slightly graded trail that offers a wonderful escape in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

wilderness.<br />

Kipp Mountain • 1.92 mi / 2 hrs – parking on Ben Culver Road,<br />

1 mi west of Landon Hill Road<br />

This moderate hike has some steep sections and winds through an<br />

official tree farm. It leads <strong>to</strong> a cliff line with beautiful views of Loon<br />

Lake and is a great spot <strong>to</strong> experience fall foliage.<br />

Cougar Nature Trails • .9 mi/ 45 min – parking at North Warren<br />

Central School, Route 8 Chester<strong>to</strong>wn<br />

Take a short, steep trail or a long gradual trail <strong>to</strong> reach <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>p of<br />

Cougar Hill—<strong>the</strong> decision is yours. Once at <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>p, you will find<br />

great views and an excellent spot for picnicking. There are additional<br />

Nature Trails—a short inner loop or a more challenging out loop—<br />

that will take you through woods and fields. The varied ecosystems<br />

contain diverse plants and animals <strong>to</strong> observe and enjoy.<br />

Meade Mountain and Beckman Mountain • 2.1 mi / 2 ½ hrs –<br />

parking on Igerna Road, ¾ mi west on Rt 9<br />

This moderate hike has several long, steep sections leading <strong>to</strong> one<br />

of <strong>the</strong> best views of Gore Mountain. Continue on and make a short<br />

descent followed by an ascent as you travel from Meade <strong>to</strong> Beckman<br />

Mountain. This leads <strong>to</strong> several views of Look Lake, o<strong>the</strong>r mountains<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> east and north, and a view of Bly<strong>the</strong>wood Island, home of<br />

a former six s<strong>to</strong>ry resort hotel.<br />
