Winter Garden Resident Goes the Distance<br />

You probably already know<br />
Lelia Higgins. If you’ve ever been<br />
to the Windermere Library,<br />
you've probably met the quiet, resourceful<br />
library manager. Maybe<br />
she helped you research a topic<br />
or recommended a newly released<br />
book. Everyone she connects with<br />
at her job agrees it is obvious<br />
she loves helping people and exudes<br />
a passion for reading. What<br />
you probably don’t know is this<br />
Jamaican native, who moved to<br />
Orlando when she was 29, is also a<br />
marathon runner.<br />
Lelia didn’t start out with a desire to<br />
run marathons. A mother of two adult<br />
children, her running career began<br />
in 2004. She was shopping with one<br />
of her daughters for a dress to wear<br />
to the girl’s high school graduation.<br />
When Lelia realized she needed to<br />
go up a size from what she normally<br />
wore, her daughter challenged her<br />
to buy the dress in the smaller size.<br />
With graduation only a month away,<br />
there wasn’t much time for Lelia to<br />
lose the weight she needed to lose to<br />
fit into it. You could say she took that<br />
challenge and ran with it.<br />
She started out walking 3 miles a<br />
day and easily fit into the smaller-size<br />
garment with time to spare; however,<br />
according to Lelia, “that just was not<br />
enough.”<br />
She started running and saw her<br />
weight drop 40 pounds — from 170<br />
down to 130.<br />
“That’s when I was bit by the running<br />
bug,” Lelia said.<br />
