(1822–1890)
Sonata in A maj, Mélancolie
Version for piano and
violoncello
Urtext / Ed. D. Woodfull-Harris
With an Introduction by
G. Schütz
☞ BA 10917 Score with part
Franck’s Sonata is one of the
most treasured works in the
violin repertoire. This version
by the cellist Jules Delsart for
piano and violoncello is the
only arrangement of the work
authorized by the composer
and its first edition represents
the main source for Bärenreiter’s
scholarly-critical publication.
Bärenreiter’s edition also
includes a separate movement,
“Mélancolie”, first published
after Franck’s death in 1911.
Sonata for Pianoforte and
Violoncello op. 104
Urtext / Ed. M. Kroll
☞ BA 10904 Score with part
This edition, edited by Mark
Kroll, is the first scholarlycritical
publication of this
sonata. It is based on the
first edition of 1826 and the
autograph manuscript.
A comparison of the sources
brought to light a number of
details overlooked in the first
edition.
Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Felix
(1809–1847)
Song without Words
for Violoncello and Pianoforte
op. 109
Urtext / Ed. R. L. Todd
☞ BA 10934 Score with part
This standard work of the
cello literature has been
extracted from volume II
of the “Complete Works for
Violoncello and Pianoforte”
(BA 9096 and BA 9097
page 75) which was
published in 2016. Mendelssohn
scholar R. Larry Todd edited
the scholarly-critical edition
of “Song without Words”.
This work is not based on
the surviving autograph
manuscript, which could not
have been the basis for the
posthumous first edition,
but rather on the only
plausible source: the German
first edition itself. This was
published in 1868 as op. 109
and is unquestionably based
on an untraceable complete
final manuscript, perhaps
once previously owned by the
dedicatee, French cellist Lisa
Barbier Cristiani.
The publication is free
from editorial amendments
and modern performance
instructions and provides an
excellent basis for musical
interpretation.
• Informative Foreword
Commentary (Eng)
