Life’s A Beach

Nothing beats a day out at the beach! If your pooch enjoys digging
in the sand and dipping their paws in the sea, read our guide to the
best beaches for a doggy day out in East Anglia…
Suffolk
Aldeburgh
Restrictions: Dog ban on main part of the beach from
1 May to 30 September
Type: Pebbles
Though a dog ban remains in place throughout the
summer, the north part of the beach from Wentworth
Hotel to Thorpeness is dog-friendly year round - make
sure you stay within the designated areas. There’s
plenty of pubs and restaurants nearby to refuel after
a long walk.
Covehithe
Restrictions: Dog friendly year round
Type: Sandy
One of Suffolk’s best kept secrets! Experience Suffolk’s
wilderness on this beautiful beach.
Dunwich Heath
Felixstowe
Restrictions: Summer ban on the main beach from
1 May to 30 September
Type: Sand & shingle
The main beach enforces a summer ban but there is
a dog-friendly area from the Spa Pavilion to Arwela
Road, however dogs must be kept on leads.
Lowestoft
Restrictions: Summer ban on the entire beach from
1 May to 30 September
Type: Sand & shingle
Best avoided during the summer, however dogs are
allowed north of Gunton Denes, but be vigilant of
prohibitions.
Southwold
Restrictions: Summer ban from 1 May to 30 September
Type: Sandy
Unfortunately, families take over during the summer but
it’s a great place to visit during winter months where
you’ll often have a large part of the beach to yourself.
Thorpeness
Restrictions: Dog friendly year round, except a small
section which places a summer ban
Type: Pebbles
Most of the beach is dog friendly year round. Tides
can be quite rough so it’s not always suitable for
doggy paddling.
Walberswick
Dunwich Heath
Restrictions: Dog friendly year round
Type: Shingle
A great beach for dogs who love to run, play and
splash. Parts of the beach are steep, especially at
high tide, but wonderful walks to Walberswick and
Southwold can be enjoyed. Bear in mind that it is also
the home of RSPB Minsmere so some restrictions may
apply on the Heath during nesting season.
Walberswick
Restrictions: Dog friendly year round
Type: Sand
With its dunes, large sandy beach and beautiful
village with a dog-friendly pub, it’s doggy heaven.
A fantastic walk with seal sighting opportunities.
miles of stunning coastline. There’s plenty of parking too!
Cley-next-the-Sea
Restrictions: Dog friendly year round
Type: Shingle
Set in the pretty village of Cley-next-the-Sea, the
beach can be reached via the footpath over the salt
marshes. It is home to Cley Marshes Nature Reserve
which prohibits dogs but pooches can enjoy the
shingle, north end of the beach and nearby trails.
Kelling Beach
Restrictions: Dog friendly year round
Type: Pebbles
A relatively quiet stretch of coastline, where walkers can
and their pups from November to January. Dogs must
be kept on a lead when seals are present.
Old Hunstanton
Restrictions: Dog friendly year round
Type: Sand
Hunstanton is split into two parts. The new area is a
seaside town famed for its pink cliffs, however a dog
ban applies during the summer. Therefore dog owners
should visit Old Hunstanton, which offers a huge
stretch of sand and a great place to watch the sunset.
Sea Palling
Wells-next-the-Sea
Restrictions: Dog friendly year round
splash in the sea. Check out the Beach Café which has a
station for washing mucky paws, water and treats.
West Runton
Restrictions: Dog friendly year round
Type: Sand and stone
From here, you can walk to both East Runton and
with dogs kept on lead and off the beach.
Canvey Island
Restrictions: Summer ban on main beach from 30
April to 1 October, however the paddling pool area
bans dogs at all times
Type: Sand and shingle
Walk towards Thorney Bay which is much more dog
friendly with a grass area and park for children.
Walton-on-the-Naze
Restrictions: Summer ban from 1 May to 30 September
Type: Sand
Home to the second longest pier in the UK, the summer
ban comes in to play in the main resort area but walk
a few miles further north and you’ll find a quieter area,
which allows dogs, however always check before
letting your dog off the lead.
West Mersea
Restrictions: Dog friendly year round
Type: Sand and shingle
Overlooking the Blackwater Estuary, the beach has
character and charm, great for lazy days on the coast.
the jetty and dog-friendly boat trips, there’s something
for the whole family to enjoy.
Walkies!
Written by Karen Rhodes
Are you stuck in a rut doing the same old dog walks?
Why not pack up the whole family at the weekend
and give your dog a real treat while soaking up some
of the delights our region has to offer? So you don’t
have to spend time planning, here’s a handy list of 10
walking routes in East Anglia.
Rendelsham Forest
2. Thetford Forest
Thetford Road, Brandon IP27 0AF
The walks all start at High Lodge varying from pine
trees to heathland. However busy the car park seems,
the area is so vast it’s still nice and quiet as you go
off and explore. On return there are taps and dog
bowls to provide fresh water for your weary pooch.
Be prepared to carry your poo bags as there are no
bins once you get going.
3. Dunstable Downs
Dunstable Road, Whipsnade LU6 2GY
Set high on the Chiltons, Dunstable Downs is an
amazing area to take in some of the region’s most
spectacular views. There are a number of walks
starting from the visitors centre, some being quite
steep so pack your hiking boots and some treats for
your dog.
1. Lavenham
Bridge Street Road, Lavenham CO10 9QT
Start from the church, head towards Portland Lane,
turning left at Park Road. Pick up the lane where the
walk begins following the stunning disused Lavenham
to Long Melford railway line. Struggling to motivate
the children? Tell them that Harry Potter’s house is at
the end and see if they can guess which one it is as
you head back up the High Street.
4. Baylham
Chalk Hill Lane, Great Blakenhan IP6 0NA
Follow Chalk Hill Lane until you reach signs for the
Baylham and Beyond Trail which will take you on a
beautiful, quite countryside circular walk. Some of the
walk is on the road but it’s so quiet you needn’t worry
about too much traffic, only the odd horse rider.
10

5. Rendlesham Forest
Tangham IP12 3NF
Just a short distance from Woodbridge, one of the most dog friendly
towns in the region, Rendlesham has a variety of walking routes. I
would recommend walking your dog around the trail which takes
its name from the famous 1980 Rendlesham UFO incident. The well
sign posted walking trails cross over cycling paths in places so you
do need to take care if your dog loves to chase.
6. Cranfield
Lodge Road, Cranfield, Bedford MK43 0BD
A true local treasure set in a quiet location away from the main
roads. The walk is located off Lodge Road taking you through tree
lined hard standing paths which look down towards Marston Thrift.
There’s been lots of trees planted recently and two ponds providing
a nice spot to sit and take in the tranquillity before tackling the hill
on the return journey.
7. Walberswick
Ferry Road, Walberswick IP18 6UA
If you’re a fan of sandy beaches and crabbing this is the walk
for you. The best news is that on Walberswick beach, dogs are
permitted all year round. Spend the day on the sandy dunes or
take your dog to the nature reserve. The car park is conveniently
situated right on the beach and the coastal path is clearly marked.
8. Dedham
Dedham Road, Dedham CO7 6DH
Away from the popular tourist destination of the Mill, amble around
the Essex Way Walk which passes through the picturesque fields of
Dedham Vale and the Stour Valley. There are horses in some of the
fields so make sure your dog is ok with them. It’s easy to see why
Constable loved this part of the region so much.
9. Shingle Street
Woodbridge IP12 3BE
This dog walk is a hidden gem which you wouldn’t necessarily know
about unless you live locally. Shingle Street as the name would
suggest is a shingle beach which benefits from being dog-friendly
all year round. Get there early to nab the best parking spot close
to the beach. A word of caution though, allowing your dog to swim
in the sea is not recommended as there are strong undercurrents.
10. Stoke Hammond
Leighton Road, Milton Keynes MK17 9DD
The final walk is a canal route starting from the Three Locks pub,
which is dog friendly of course. You have two options; walk towards
Stoke Hammond in one direction or head towards Linslade.
Both are equally beautiful walks and are busy with canal boats
throughout the year.
Doggy Paddle
Written by Karen Rhodes
When the days are long and hot, we won’t be complaining, though it’s
not so much fun for our pets. Instead of your usual walk, check out
these places where your dog can have a cooling dip.
Bramford Picnic Site
Mills and Meadows walk, Bramford, Ipswich, IP8 4AP
Set alongside the River Gipping, Bramford Picnic Site
is a fantastic place to spend the day with the family.
With a hard standing path running alongside the river
and plenty of places for your dog to hop in and out of
the water, it’s no wonder this is a popular place to take
your dog swimming. There’s a large green open space
with picnic benches and plenty of room to run about
with a ball or a Frisbee. If it’s too hot, head into the
woods which are a short walk along the path towards
Sproughton. www.discoversuffolk.org.uk/map/millsand-meadows-bramford-walk
Hylands Park
London Road, Chelmsford, Essex, CM2 8WQ
Hylands Park is part of the historic grade II listed
Hylands Estate covering an impressive 574 acres so
you’re not short of open space for you and your dog
to have a run around. The park hosts music festivals
and concerts so do check before visiting as you might
find it a little busy. It boasts the gorgeous Serpentine
Lake for your dog to have a swim and plenty of
facilities ensures you can spend the day exploring the
stunning grounds.
www.hylandsestate.co.uk
Needham Lake and Nature Reserve
Coddenham Road, Needham Market, IP6 8NU
Needham Lake is popular for dog walkers, nature
enthusiasts and families alike. Take the lovely circular
walk around the lake then finish up on the footpath
along the river where there are many opportunities for
your dog to have a swim. Keep an eye out for signs
where your dog can and can’t be off lead in the park.
Please note on Saturdays there is a car boot sale and
Sunday mornings there is a local run so the car park
may be busier than normal.
www.midsuffolk.gov.uk/communities/open-spacesand-playgrounds/places-to-visit/needham-lake
14

Willen Lake
Brickhill Street, Milton Keynes, MK15 0DS
This really is the place to go if you want to enjoy a day
out with the family. As well as lots of places your dog
can jump in and out of the lake around the circular
route, there’s also plenty for the little ones too. With
a large children’s play park, treetop assault course,
not to mention water sports for the more adventurous,
there’s certainly something for the whole family to
enjoy. Finish up at the bar where you can sit outside
and enjoy something to eat as you watch the little
ones feeding the ducks. www.willenlake.org.uk
Priory Country Park
Barkers Lane, Bedford, MK41 9DJ
Just a stone’s throw from the busy town of Bedford, it’s
hard to believe this calm oasis exists a short distance
away from such an urban area. Head for the spot
known as “the beach”, which is shallow enough for
your dog to wade in and swim if they’re comfortable.
You can kick back and relax on this sandy area with
a picnic while your four-legged friend frolics in the
water.
Southern Country Park
Thorley Lane East, Bishop’s Stortford, CM23 4BH
Green flag award-winning Southern Country Park
is a lovely place to explore with your dog, made
simple with the help of their interactive map. Why not
challenge your dog and yourself and have a go on
the purpose built agility course? Wind down with a
stroll around the lake, which is also used for fishing.
Do take care if anglers are there and your dog wants
to swim, and be respectful of the local wildlife!
Country-Park
Canine Dip and Dive
Potash Lane, Wyverstone, Norfolk, IP14 4SL
doesn’t getter any better than Canine Dip and Dive
in Wyverstone. Choose from their services which
Field
& Frolics
Written by Karen Rhodes
Do you dream of worry free walks?
Secure fields could be the answer.
For some owners dog walks can be stressful, especially for those who have
reactive dogs or pets with a high prey drive that just love to run and run.
Imagine your dog being able to run free without the headache of other
dogs or distractions. Maybe your pooch seizes an opportunity to chase
squirrels in the park and you worry about them not coming back. Or you
just want somewhere secure to train your dog. You need to hire a secure
field.
Secure fields are available to hire for a whole host of reasons and there are
certainly more and more popping up in our region. With up to 6ft fencing
set in quiet locations away from the many distractions of urban life, these
are the ideal places to train your new puppy recall without the worry of
them escaping.
Originally a field for hire was just that, fields with high fencing, but many
have seen a lot of improvements in recent years. Some boast swimming
pools, toys and lots of fun equipment for you to use if you’re stuck for ideas
of things to do with your dog.
Your dog can enjoy the freedom to run around and sniff to their hearts
content and ‘be more dog’ without them encountering the scary things that
make them anxious. The concept has become so popular that there is a
dedicated website where you can find a secure field. Visit the dog walking
fields’ website and simply enter your postcode to find your nearest location:
www.dogwalkingfields.co.uk
Many are located in the stunning countryside; why not hire out for a couple
of hours and pack up the family and take a picnic? Take advantage of your
own private, safe rural retreat for your whole family. Here are six top picks
of secure fields to hire in the region:
18

Developing Dog Walks, Ely
certainly won’t be stuck for things to do in this natural wild flower
meadow with ponds and plenty of equipment for your dog to
explore. www.developingdogs.co.uk/safe-dog-walks
Grange Meadow Dog Field, Kings Lynn
www.norfolkdogfield.co.uk
Suffolk Run Free, Woodbridge
your dog to sniff. Also available is a toy box, paddling pool and
drinking areas all within the safety of 6ft fencing.
www.suffolkrunfree.co.uk
Puppy Paddocks, Norwich
Carleton End, Watton Road, Barford, Norwich, NR9 4AR
Their motto is: “Safe play for all dogs-not just puppies.” With
over two acres of secure field to hire by 30 minute slots, enjoy a
variety of activities with your dog including agility or simply play
with the toys available.
www.puppypaddocks.co.uk
Sea Dogs Training, Sudbury
Melford Road, Sudbury CO10 9DF
With a bench to sit on, tea and coffee making facilities for
you and a water slide for your dog, what’s stopping you from
booking a slot here? Sea Dogs 2.5 acre secure field is available
to hire by the hour for individuals and groups.
www.seadogstraining.co.uk/secure-exercise-area
Four Paws Adventure Academy, Bedford
Water End, Cople, Bedford MK44 3TY
This two acre secure field really is dog heaven. Set up just like a
playground, there are so many activities for your dog to choose
from including agility, sand filled tyres, tunnels and so much
more. Good luck trying to get your dog to leave!
How physiotherapy can help your pet
A form of physiotherapy has been used on people for centuries but it wasn’t
until around 35 years ago that the principles started to be applied to our pets.
After all, animals are essentially made up of the same things we are!
The aim of physiotherapy is to reduce the pain caused by disease, injury or
surgery, improve function and ultimately help our pets enjoy life again. There
are many pet health problems physiotherapy can help with. This includes:
Post-operatively – Surgeon’s skills can repair and treat many conditions
and physiotherapy can be hugely beneficial following surgery. It aids the
healing process, reduces pain, increases muscle strength and joint use,
leading to a faster recovery and better return to a happy life. Conditions
include: cruciate ligament repair, fracture repair, arthroscopy & ‘slipped disc’
surgery.
Degenerative conditions – Often these patients suffer with compensatory
discomfort as well as the condition itself. With the right care pain can
be reduced, the degeneration slowed and the quality of life improved.
Conditions include: arthritis, joint dysplasia & spondylosis.
and sporting dogs). Physiotherapy helps the
healing process, reduce the pain and restore the
pet’s movement. Conditions include: muscle tears,
ligament sprains, inflammation & tension.
Fitness – Physiotherapy treatments, especially
hydrotherapy, aims to improve fitness and
performance in working and sporting dogs.
Weight loss – Obesity is growing problem in the
pet world and exercise is one of the best ways
to tackle it. However, exercising an overweight
animal can be problematic and potentially injury.
Physiotherapy can provide a structured, low impact
and safe programme to aid the pet’s weight loss.
Wound healing & scar tissue reduction –
Whether from surgery or injury wound healing can
be complex and physiotherapy can help here too.
It aims to aid the healing process, reduce bacteria
and reduce scar tissue restriction.
More effective treatments and surgeries are
available to our pets than ever before and
physiotherapy is proving to be a valuable part of
the pet healthcare evolution. Many vets have seen
the benefits of physiotherapy for their patients and
sometimes even recoveries better than they thought
possible.
Cromwell ARC in Sawtry is one of only a few
dedicated animal rehabilitation centres in the East
region. The purpose built centre boasts a spacious
and fully equipped physiotherapy room, a stateof-the-art
underwater treadmill (hydrotherapy)
and a world-renowned K-Laser° unit. The three
qualified animal physiotherapists offer appointments
six days a week to maximize availability for this
excellent and busy service. They welcome pets from
all veterinary practices but do require your vet’s
consent.
If you think your pet would benefit from
physiotherapy, please speak to your vet or
contact Cromwell ARC.

Respect - Protect - Enjoy
The Countryside
Code
Respect other people: Consider the local community
and other people enjoying the outdoors. Leave gates
and property as you find them and follow paths unless
wider access is available
Protect the natural environment: Leave no trace
of your visit and take your litter home. Keep dogs
under effective control. When you take your dog into
the outdoors, always ensure it does not disturb wildlife,
farm animals, horses or other people by keeping it under
effective control. This means that you:
•Keep your dog on a lead, or
•Keep it in sight at all times, be aware of what it’s
doing and be confident it will return to you promptly
on command
•Ensure it does not stray off the path or area where
you have a right of access
Special dog rules may apply in particular situations, so
always look out for local signs – for example:
•Dogs may be banned from certain areas that
people use, or there may be restrictions, byelaws or
control orders limiting where they can go
•The access rights that normally apply to open
country and registered common land (known as
‘open access’ land) require dogs to be kept on a
short lead between 1 March and 31 July, to help
protect ground nesting birds, and all year round near
farm animals
•At the coast, there may also be some local
restrictions to require dogs to be kept on a short lead
during the bird breeding season, and to prevent
disturbance to flocks of resting and feeding birds
during other times of year
It’s always good practice (and a legal requirement on
‘open access’ land) to keep your dog on a lead around
farm animals and horses, for your own safety and for the
welfare of the animals. A farmer may shoot a dog which
is attacking or chasing farm animals without being liable
to compensate the dog’s owner. However, if cattle or
horses chase you and your dog, it is safer to let your dog
off the lead – don’t risk getting hurt by trying to protect it.
Your dog will be much safer if you let it run away from a
farm animal in these circumstances and so will you.
Everyone knows how unpleasant dog mess is and it can
cause infections, so always clean up after your dog and
get rid of the mess responsibly – ‘bag it and bin it’. Make
sure your dog is wormed regularly to protect it, other
animals and people.
Enjoy the outdoors: Even when going out locally, it’s
best to get the latest information about where and when
you can go. For example, your rights to go onto some
areas of open access land and coastal land may be
restricted in particular places at particular times. Find out
as much as you can about where you are going, plan
ahead and follow advice and local signs.
Visit Natural England on GOV.UK or contact local
information centres or libraries for a list of outdoor
recreation groups offering advice on specialist
activities.
When visiting the coast check for tide times on EasyTide.
