Forthisphoto,IsawthisamazingwomaninthestreetsofNYCandsaid

toher,“OhmyGodmiss,youarethemostincrediblelookingwomanI

haveseenalday.DoyoumindifImadeafewphotographsofyou?”She

wasquitehumbledandsaid,“Ofcourse!”

Igotveryclosewithherwithmycamera,andtookmanyphotographs,

shootingsomewithflash,somewithout.Iaskedhertolookup,andto

lookdownatme.

Onthe19thframe,shestartedburstingoutlaughingandsaid,“You’re

takingsomanyphotos,you’recrazy!”andstartedlaughing.Onthat

frame,Icapturedthe“decisivemoment.”

Aftercapturingthemoment,Istilwasn’t100% surewhetherIgotan

interestingphotographornot,soIkeptclicking,around10moreframes.

Asageneralrule-of-thumb,whenIthinkI’vegotthephotograph,Itryto

take25% morephotographs(becauseyouneverknowifyoumightcatch

anevenmoreinterestingphotographafter-the-fact).

Havingagroupofpeople(thebiggerthebeter)reassuringothersthat

yourservicesarewortheverypennyrealygoesalongwayinthe

industry.

Ifyoumakesuretheservicesyouareoferingareconsistentand

pleasurablewitheachandeveryclient,andyouareleavingthem

completelysatisfiedandhappywiththeresults,wordofmouthmarketing

wilcomenaturaly.

However,ifyouwanttouseincentivestohavethem moreencouragedto

spreadyournameinagoodway,thatisperfectlyfinealso.Justmakesure

youareprovidingtheskilsandservicesandprofessionalism thatyouare

advertising.

Also,alwaysrememberthatit’satwowaystreet.Acoupleofbad

experiencescanleadtowordofmouthmarketingtoo,justnotinagood

way.Getpeoplesayinggoodthings,makethem wanttogiveyougood

reviewsandrecommendyoutoothers!

Streetphotographyisalaboutfailure.AsAlexWebbsaid,“Street

photographyis99.9% aboutfailure.”Everytimeyouclicktheshuter,

thereisonlya1% chancethatyouwilmakeaninterestingshot.The

majorityofthetime,youmightshootanentireday,notgetasinglegood

shot,andfeeldisappointedandfrustrated.

Knowthatfailureisagoodthing.Themoreyoufail,themorelikelyyou

aretosucceed.AsThomasEdisononcesaid:“Ifyouwanttoincreaseyour

successrate,doubleyourfailurerate.”

Youcancontroltheeffort,nottheresults.Meaning,youcancontrol

putingin8hoursofshootinginoneday,andhowhardyouwork.What

youcan’tcontroliswhetheryougetagoodshotornot.

Inmystreetphotography,IoftenfoundthatthemoreIgooutandbring

mycamera,themore“lucky”Iget.WhenIhavemycamerawithme,the

moreopportunitiesIsee.Luckisn’tsomemagicalthingthathitsuslike

lightning.Howeverluckfavorstheprepared.

Bepreparedbyalwayshavingyourcamerawithyou,alwaysobserving

yourscenesandenvironment,andknowthateveryonceinawhile,you

wilbeatthe“rightplaceattherighttime.”Ifyou’recomfortablewith

yourcameraandskiledenough,youwilalsoclicktheshuteratthe

rightmoment.

Whenyoufailtogettheshot,don’tbecomediscouraged.Rather,learn

from yourfailuresandmistakes.Whatcausedyoutomisstheshot?Wasit

becauseyourcamerawasn’tsetupproperly?Wasitbecauseyourcamera

wasinyourbag(andnotinyourhand)?Wasitbecauseyouweretoo

nervousanddidn’thavethecouragetoclicktheshuter?Learnfrom your

failures,andthecloseryouwilbecometomasteringyourphotography.
