NATIONAL LEAGUE OF AMERICAN PEN WOMEN
The National League of American Pen Women,
Inc. (NLAPW) is the nation’s oldest organization
for creative women, founded in 1897 to
encourage, recognize and promote the
production of creative work of professional
standard in Art. Letters and Music. Our members
are journalists, painters, choreographers,
sculptors, poets, illustrators, songwriters– just to
name a few of the creative fields we encompass.
For more information:
Atlanta Branch
www.atlantapenwomen.org
Beginning with 17 charter members, the
organization now is comprised of branches
throughout the U.S. and over 2500 members.
Each branch holds regular meetings and offers
workshops, art exhibits, concerts, seminars and
outreach programs. NLAPW membership
provides the opportunity to network with other
arts
professionals, enter juried exhibits and contests
and participate in professional enrichment
programs. If you are a professional in a creative
arts field, you will find a place with the NLAPW to
advance your own creative endeavors. You will
join the stream of women dedicated to the Arts,
such as Vinnie Ream, Eleanor Roosevelt, Eudora
Welty, Margaret Mitchell, Grandma Moses, Pearl
S. Buck and many others who have listed this
prestigious organization among their professional
affiliations.
The Atlanta Branch
The Atlanta Branch became an official branch in
1931 under the leadership of Mrs. Erkine
Jarnigan, known professionally as “Polly
Peachtree” the society Editor for The Georgian
newspaper, and Atlanta musician Bonita Crowe.
We hold a
luncheon meeting each second Wednesday of
months September through May. We welcome
new members in Art, Letters, and Music.

Letter from the President
Welcome to our Fifth
“Reflections” Exhibition!
inquire with the
atlantapenwomen.org.
This show is made possible by a
generous bequest from our late
Atlanta Branch and National
Pen Women President, Virginia
Avery, who desired to promote
Georgia women artists.
Stewardship of her bequest, by
providing this serious
competition, is a solemn honor
for our branch. If you would
like to become a participant in
our next exhibition, please
or inquire through our website at
I am grateful to our 2019 “Reflections” committee, chaired by
Anne Brodie Hill, who has worked diligently to make this
exhibition one that would not only honor Virginia Avery’s
memory, but also showcase the immense talent displayed by
women artists in Georgia. Thank you, as well, to the
for providing this wonderful venue and
supporting women artists in this way.We are grateful for you, as
well, for attending our show.
Enjoy!
– Brenda Smith
President, Atlanta Branch
National League of American Pen Women

Letter from the Chair
We are happy to present the Fifth “Reflections”
Exhibition at the
in Gainesville this year.
Thank you to our juror Debra Yaun who had the
daunting task of choosing from 342 submissions.
She selected 150 stunning works of art by 115
talented women artists from all over Georgia.
Thank you to Fran Stewart for handling the finances and Judy
Cutchins who, once again, produced a lovely pottery piece for the
“People’s Choice Award”. Many thanks to Amanda Shelnutt,
Director of the
and her staff Paula Lindner, Erin
Manning and Allison Wacho. Without them there would be no
exhibition, catalog, or reception.
We hope you are entertained, challenged and inspired.
The Virginia Avery legacy lives on!
– Anne Brodie Hill
Juror’s Statement
It was an honor to be chosen as judge
for this year’s Pen Women’s exhibition
at the .
As a fine artist myself I know what it’s
like to enter competitions, so I did not
take the responsibility lightly.
Composition and drawing or painting
skills were important in my decisions.
Many abstract and impressionistic
pieces were chosen since I appreciate
many forms of art as well as
photography, even though my work is
realistic. Several 3 D pieces were also
chosen for a well-rounded exhibition.
– Debra Yaun

Virginia Turner Avery
March 19, 1912—February 18, 2006
Virginia Avery served The
Georgia State Association, and
as president of the Atlanta
Branch.
An Art member, Virginia
exhibited in several states and
was active in many organizations and art guilds. Born in
Ridgeley, Maryland, she graduated from Oglethorpe
University and did graduate work at several other
Universities. She and her husband, Lawrence Avery,
shared interests in travel, photography, flying and ham
radio. They had five children.
In later years, Virginia lived in Augusta, Georgia, where
she enjoyed painting and ceramics and was learning to
play the Mountain Dulcimer.
Pen Women loved and respected Virginia, appreciating
her leadership, her gentle spirit, and the way she inspired
her fellow artists.
Her legacy continues...
