Editor’s Note
Published by:
Happy July, lovelies...
And so half a year has gone by, just like that!
In terms of fertility health though, did you know that half a year could make a huge
difference in your chances of a healthy, thriving pregnancy? That’s right! Experts
believe that women should start to look after their bodies at least six months before
even getting pregnant. This includes daily intake of folic acid, quitting any bad habits,
taking in a more nutritious diet, getting proper exercise, having an ideal body mass
index, etc.
In our issue this month, we also happen to cover an article on this very issue, titled
“Why you need to get healthy before your conceive.” If you’re intending to get
pregnant, we hope this piece will be of help to you!
Our monthly magazine turn 8 this August and we’re really happy and grateful to be
able to touch the lives of our readers all this while and we hope to be around for many
more years to come.
To those who have picked up their first copy of BabyTalk, welcome, we say! We have
loads in store for you from the beginning of your pregnancy journey right up till your
child is in preschool - we’ve got something in here for everyone, so enjoy!
Till next month, then!
verbally ridiculed for an incorrect answer, or being pushed to
deliver one right answer under a high pressure, or has to put
up with a fast paced environment, it creates a tremendous
amount of stress on the child. Learning is about gaining
knowledge and experiences, it is not about memorising the
right answer to score in an examination.
Daisy Ng
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
}
How can a preschool contribute towards
developing better self confidence in little ones? ~
Prolonged high pressure learning environment does not build
confidence in a child. The child is led to believe there would
be only one right answer, and may not believe in his own
ability to provide a solution.
In a nutshell, developing confidence in a child starts from
building the child from within and allowing the child
the personal space yet supportive environment to learn
through errors.
A child who is self-confident is often a happy child, someone
who feels good in his own skin, secure in his environment
where he has a relatively good grasp of what’s going on and
developing his natural abilities at a suitably stimulating pace.
I believe a child has a natural happy state. I often advise
parents to start off from the premise of building a child, not
break a child. When anything is broken, there are cracks and
fragments. These are where confidence slips through. This is
not how we build a child to be self-confident.
How can we build a child in a preschool environment? Well,
the responsibility falls on both the school and parents.
Children are work-in-progress, there are bound to be
trials, errors and mistakes. It is important to provide a safe
environment for them; i) to indulge their natural curiosity to
learn, ii) to be brave to explore new options, iii) where, when
mistakes are made, they will not be punished harshly.
A child is developing his social skills, learning to play with
another child (also a work-in-progress) and learning the
rules of social norms. When a child makes a mistake, correct
positively and firmly so the child knows right from wrong and
has a chance to improve.
I coined the phrase ‘playschool’ and started the first
playschool because I believe in early learning and learning
through play. I believe that children are naturally curious
about the world and want to learn more. We focus on
cultivating the right skills and attitude to build a confident
learner for life.
Extending from this simple philosophy of exploratory
learning is to allow the child to learn at his own pace.
Sometimes the child gets it right immediately, sometimes
the child may need a few more tries. The key is not to
impose a binary right and wrong answer. In a hostile
learning environment where a child is physically punished,
How a pregnant mom feels about
her body
Researchers have shown that a new way of assessing
women’s relationship with their bodies during pregnancy
could help predict how well the mother might bond
with her unborn baby and her longer-term emotional
wellbeing. Results from the study suggest that introducing
a standardised method of assessing women’s feelings
towards their changing bodies during antenatal care could
provide important information on how they might respond
to being a new mum. The BUMPS method, developed
by scientists at the University of York and Anglia Ruskin
University, is a self-reporting system based on questions
relating to satisfaction with appearing pregnant, weight
gain concerns, and the physical burdens of pregnancy. In
a study of more than 600 pregnant women, data from
the BUMPS questionnaire revealed that women who felt
more positively about
their body changes in
pregnancy were more
likely to have better
relationships with
their partners; lower
depression and anxiety
scores; and were better
at interpreting their
bodily signals.
Can music help with the brain
development of very
premature babies?
Nearly 1% of children are born “very prematurely,” in
Switzerland, which represents about 800 children yearly.
While advances in neonatal medicine now give them a good
chance of survival, these children are however at high risk of
developing neuropsychological disorders. The vast majority
will survive, but half will later develop neurodevelopmental
disorders, including learning difficulties, attentional or
emotional disorders. “At birth, these babies’ brains are still
immature. Brain development must therefore continue in
the intensive care unit, in an incubator, under very different
conditions than if they were still in their mother’s womb,”
explains Petra Hüppi, professor at the UNIGE Faculty of
Medicine and Head of the HUG Development and Growth
Division, who directed this work. “Brain immaturity,
combined with a disturbing sensory environment, and this
explains why neural networks do not develop normally.” To
help the brains of these fragile newborns develop as well as
possible despite the stressful environment of intensive care,
researchers at the University of Geneva (UNIGE) and the
University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG), Switzerland, propose
an original solution: music written especially for them. And
the first results, published in the Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences (PNAS) in the United States, are
surprising: medical imaging reveals that the neural networks
of premature infants who have listened to this music, and in
particular a network involved in many sensory and cognitive
functions, are developing much better.
Read with and to your toddler!
People who regularly read with their toddlers are less likely
to engage in harsh parenting and the children are less likely
to be hyperactive or disruptive, a Rutgers-led study finds.
Previous studies have shown that frequent shared reading
prepares children for school by building language, literacy
and emotional skills, but the study by Rutgers Robert Wood
Johnson Medical School researchers may be the first to
focus on how shared reading affects parenting.
The study, published in the Journal of Developmental &
Behavioral Pediatrics, suggests additional benefits from
shared reading -- a stronger parent-child bond and less
hyperactivity and attention problems in children. “For
parents, the simple routine of reading with your child on
a daily basis provides not just academic but emotional
benefits that can help bolster the child’s success in school
and beyond,” said lead researcher Manuel Jimenez, an
assistant professor at
Rutgers Robert Wood
Johnson Medical School’s
department of pediatrics,
and an attending
developmental behavioral
pediatrician at Children’s
Specialized Hospital.
Embryo stem cells created from
skin cells
Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HU)
have found a way to transform skin cells into the three
major stem cell types that comprise early-stage embryos.
The work (in mouse cells) has significant implications for
modelling embryonic disease and placental dysfunctions,
as well as paving the way to create whole embryos from
skin cells. As published in Cell Stem Cell, Dr. Yossi Buganim
of HU’s Department of Developmental Biology and Cancer
Research and his team discovered a set of genes capable
of transforming murine skin cells into all three of the cell
types that comprise the early embryo: the embryo itself, the
placenta and extraembryonic tissues, such as the umbilical
cord. In the future, it may be possible to create entire human
embryos out of human skin cells, without the need for
sperm or eggs. This discovery also has vast implications for
modelling embryonic defects and shedding light on placental
dysfunction, as well as solving certain infertility problems by
creating human embryos in a petri dish.
more father friendly cues in OB/GYN offices
The saying “a picture is worth a thousand words” might be just what the doctor ordered
for expecting fathers. A Rutgers-led study last year found that by adding a few subtle cues
to prenatal care waiting rooms, such as photos of men and babies, and pamphlets and
magazines aimed toward men, OBGYNS can get fathers more involved in prenatal care
and increase healthier outcomes for women and infants. The study, which appeared in
the journal Plos One, tested whether having father-friendly cues in OBGYN offices would
improve men’s involvement. The pictures, brochures and magazines in typical OBGYN
offices tend to focus only on mothers. Seeing a balance of father- and mother-focused
images may help men to better visualize and feel confident in their role in prenatal care,
the researchers said.
The benefits of a fishy diet during pregnancy
Women could enhance the development of their unborn child’s eyesight and brain function by regularly eating fatty fish
during pregnancy. This is the suggestion from a small-scale study led by Kirsi Laitinen of the University of Turku and Turku
University Hospital in Finland, in the Springer Nature-branded journal Pediatric Research. The research supports previous
findings that show how important a prospective mother’s diet and lifestyle choices are for the development of her baby.
According to Laitinen, a mother’s diet during pregnancy and breastfeeding is the main way that valuable long-chain
polyunsaturated fatty acids become available to a fetus and infant brain during the period of maximum brain growth during
the first years of a child’s life. Such fatty acids help to shape the nerve cells that are relevant to eyesight and particularly the
retina. They are also important in forming the synapses that are vital in the transport of messages between neurons in the
nervous system.
Olive Oil
Naturel Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Goodness of 3 Olive Varieties (Hap) in A Single Bottle
Extra virgin olive oils are known to be a vital ingredient for the healthy Mediterranean diets. Hence, they are
highly sought after by the health conscious and affluent consumers in Asia. However, they were often pricey
or expensive due to the many intermediaries involved in the entire sourcing and supply chain before reaching
the end consumers. Besides leading to high operating costs, such multiple sourcing and packing practices
involve a more challenged and complicated quality control process, to maintain purity and freshness of the
extra virgin olive oil. This is how the Naturel brand created a huge advantage for its consumers, with its high
quality extra virgin olive oils. The brand has carefully selected 3 of the best Spanish olive fruit varieties; i.e.
Hojiblanca, Arbequina and Picual (HAP), from the most pristine olive groves in Andalucia, Spain. Within 24
hours of harvesting, these fresh olive fruits will go through cold-pressed oil extraction to preserve its freshness,
purity and healthy antioxidants. Upon passing its stringent quality process, they are filled and packed in each
bottle of Naturel Extra Virgin Olive Oil in Andalucia, Spain and shipped directly to Malaysia. The Naturel brand
adopts the SINGLE SOURCING method, by cutting all multiple sourcing and supply chain intermediaries to
maintain the goodness in every single bottle!
up loads of opportunities for his or her future. This is because, in these modern, language skills are considered
as highly prized assets. In terms of early childhood education, the earlier children start to be exposed other
languages. At Peter & Jane kindergarten, children are taught in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin, which
offers a rich and conducive trilingual learning experience for them. Here, their sponge-like minds are consistently
exposed to a rich setting of three different languages during the interactive classes, allowing them to grasp
not just the lessons, but the languages as well, naturally. It’s safe to say that the teaching system at Peter &
pregnancy and the few days after giving birth.
2. Human and bovine colostrums are thick, sticky and
yellowish.
3. In humans, it has high concentrations of nutrients and
antibodies, but it is small in quantity.
4. Colostrum is high in carbohydrates, high in protein, high in
antibodies, and low in fat (as human newborns may find
fat difficult to digest).
5. Newborns have very small digestive systems, and
colostrum delivers its nutrients in a very concentrated lowvolume
form.
6. It has a mild laxative effect, encouraging the passing of the
baby's first stool, which is called meconium.
7. Colostrum clears excess bilirubin, a waste product of dead
red blood cells which is produced in large quantities at
birth due to blood volume reduction, from the infant's
body and helps prevent jaundice.
8. Colostrum contains large numbers of antibodies called
"secretory immunoglobulin" (IgA) that help protect the
mucous membranes in the throat, lungs, and intestines of
the infant.
9. Leukocytes are also present in large numbers; these begin
protecting the infant from harmful viruses and bacteria.
10. Ingesting colostrum establishes beneficial bacteria in the
digestive tract.
11. Premature babies tend to fare better on human colostrum
than commercial infant formulas.
12. Human milk contains special components, called growth
modulators, that help the premature baby's digestive
system adjust to oral feedings.
13. Research indicates that premature babies fed formula
tend to vomit more and continue tube feeding longer than
those fed human colostrum and breast milk.
Bump to Birth
Fertility & Conception
Why you need to
get healthy
before you conceive
So, you stopped smoking as soon as you found out you’re pregnant - good for you! Or
perhaps you have modified your diet plan to ensure you baby gets all the vital nutrients
throughout your pregnancy - Well done! Having a baby may sound simple enough, yet
countless pregnancies undergo complications and issues which could have been prevented,
even when the mom-to-be seemed to be well-informed, and took prenatal care quite
seriously. What are we missing here?
There are actually a number of thing to be aware of to ensure that a pregnancy goes well.
Let’s take a look.
BabyTalk | July 2019 41

Bump to Birth
Fertility & Conception
Aiming for a healthy
pregnancy? Start
even before you get
pregnant.
You’ve probably heard about the
importance of acid folic - it’s a type of
B vitamin that helps to prevent neural
tube defects in fetuses. These defects
are said to mostly occur during the
early formative days after conception.
For a majority of women, regular
intake of this crucial nutrient officially
begins as soon as they find out they’re
pregnant at their doctor’s office, for
they do not generally know about
their pregnancies immediately after
conception. By the time they begin to
take it, it may be too late. While neural
tube defects are not a particularly
common occurrence, and there is no
need for excessive worry, it’s always
better to be safe than sorry. In short,
take heed of the universal advice that
all women of childbearing age should
take a supplement containing 0.4 mg
of folic acid each day to reduce the
risks of a pregnancy affected by neural
tube defects.
Here are a few other aspects of a
healthy pregnancy to look into before
you get pregnant.
Have a reproductive plan.
Yes, it’s exactly as it sounds - plan
how many kids your partner and you
would like to have. Then only can you
plan their timings too, to have a better
chance of achieving your goals in life.
Get your doctor on board with this plan
for he’ll be able to point you to the
right direction and also help smoothen
out any issues pertaining to your prepregnancy
health, etc.
Practice a healthy lifestyle
In other words, eat well and exercise
regularly. These steps go a long way
in helping you reduce the chances
of developing gestational diabetes
(high blood sugar diagnosed during
pregnancy), but you’ll have to make the
right changes before you get pregnant.
Gestational diabetes can be dangerous
to your health as well as your infant’s.
Studies have shown that pre-pregnancy
exercise may actually help lower risk for
gestational diabetes, and the benefit
increases with more vigorous levels of
exercise - again, the key point here is,
before you get pregnant.
Thinking of getting pregnant?
Modify your diet. Here are some
suggestions:
• Increase your intake of fiber. Just
taking in an extra 10 grams of
fiber in the form of wholegrain
cereals, fruits, and vegetables is
associated with 26% lower risk of
gestational diabetes.
• Is gulping cola or similar sweet,
carbonated drinks
a daily thing
for you? Ditch
them! Or, at
least, reduce your
consumption.
Women who
drank five or more
such beverages
per week before
they got pregnant
were at greater risk of
gestational diabetes.
• Consume less red meat as well as
processed meats. Eating less of
these foods before pregnancy can
decrease the chances of developing
diabetes when you are pregnant.
• Replace animal protein with protein
from nuts to lower your risk of
gestational diabetes. Studies have
shown that substituting vegetable
protein for animal protein before
pregnancy can decrease the risk of
gestational diabetes by about half.
Have you been vaccinated?
Inquire from your doctor if you
need a booster for any vaccines.
Some vaccines can be given during
pregnancy, but the rubella and
varicella vaccines are recommended
before you get pregnant.
Are you at your ideal weight?
Not only is it more difficult to conceive
if you’re overweight or obese, but
also, being so puts you at risk for
complications during pregnancy, such
as high blood pressure, preeclampsia,
gestational diabetes, and stillbirth.
There’ll also be a higher chance that
your baby will have to be born via a
cesarean delivery. Talk to your health
care provider to find out what a healthy
weight is for you and about a plan to
help you achieve it
If you have a health issue, talk
to your doctor before getting
pregnant
Many health problems affect not only
the pregnant woman but also the
developing infant. Some examples
are diabetes, high blood pressure,
infections, asthma, seizure disorders.
Getting health problems under
control before and during pregnancy
reduces the risk of miscarriage and
stillbirth as well as other health
problems for the infant.
Love For Life
Choosing
baby clothes is
definitely one of
the highlights for
all new parents
or parents-to be.
While there are
all sorts available
out there in terms
of designs, brands,
color, material,
etc, one important
factor to always
keep in mind is your
baby’s comfort.
You’ll soon see
that all else come
second.
Choosing baby clothes
according to our climate
BabyTalk | July 2019 47

Baby & Toddler
Love For Life
We live in a predominantly hot and
wet environment, and other than in
rainy seasons, or if we are constantly
in air-conditioned surroundings, the
temperature is quite warm. Comfort
for a baby means being in clothing
that is does not cause too much heat
or cause baby to feel too cold. When
buying clothing for a baby, ensure that
comfort in terms of these factors are
seen to first, before considering the
design, pattern, color, fashion, etc.
Cues from your baby
If your baby seems calm, sleeps well and does not seem
restless or irritated, you have probably made the right
choice in his clothing.
Breathable material
Babies are not able to fully regulate
their temperatures through sweating
like adults can, and therefore, they
need to be clothed appropiately in
order to not get overheated. Choose
clothing made of material that can
breathe easily, such as cotton. It’s not
only the most ideal choice for babies,
but it’s also the coolest material there
is. Plus, it’s the most comfortable to
the touch. If possible though, choose
clothing made from organic cotton
material, for cotton is unfortunately,
one of the plants that is most tainted
with pesticides.
Fact on clothing
color
Did you know that
according to old folks
tales, when a baby is
having a fever, it would
be best to cloth him in
light or pastel shades
of blue or green. Avoid
bright glaring shades
such as yellow, orange
or red, for they are
believed to worsen the
situation. Scientifically, it
may actually make sense
to dress a baby (or
anyone else who
has a fever)
in lighter
shades for a
more cooling
effect.
Should baby’s clothes
be snug or loose?
This is an interesting question, for
many parents differ in their opinions.
For one, if a baby’s clothes are too
snug, it hinders proper ventilation
and baby may end up feeling
uncomfortable and stuffy.
Clothes that are too
loose-fitting may
also pose a problem
especially if they
keep rising up a baby’s
little body. Fashion and
design aside, the best way
to dress a baby would
definitely be in clothing
that are just slightly loose
to allow for comfortable
movements and of
course, some healthy
ventilation as well.
Baby & Toddler
Love For Life
Dressing a baby for
outdoors
Being outdoors in our typical
Malaysian weather can sometimes
mean being exposed to the sun’s
unforgiving rays. If you have to be
outdoors with your baby during a
hot day, do pay due attention to your
baby’s clothing. Ensure that baby is
dressed appropriately enough to be
sheilded from direct sunlight and at
the same time, the outfit should not
cause stuffiness. Long-sleeved clothing
made from light cool cotton material
will be the best choice. The choice
of color may play a part too, for dark
shades such as black or really glaring
colours such as red or yellow may
induce heatiness, where else softer
shades such as pastel blue, green or
even pink are known to keep a baby
comfortable and cool.
How to tell if your
baby’s clothing is
uncomfortably
hot
You can tell if a baby’s
clothing is making the
little one feel a bit too
hot, for he’ll be restless,
and may also seem to be
breathing quicker than
normal.
Mittens and booties
These have always been a part of
baby clothing sets, although not every
parent sees a need for them. Mittens
are used mainly to prevent the little
one from scratching himself. If you
choose to put on a pair for your baby,
do ensure that they are comfortable
and not too tight. Ensure too that
they’re made from cool, breathable
material to prevent sweaty little
hands. Booties on the other hand are
meant to keep a little infant’s feet
comfortable and warm. These too
have to be a good fit
or else it will beat
the purpose of
putting those on
your baby’s feet.
Baby hats
It’s always a good idea
to use a baby hat for your
baby when taking him outdoors,
even for a short while. The hat
will provide some protection from
the outdoor heat on hot days, and
provide some protection from
the cold outdoor air if baby
is out during a windy or
colder day.
Give priority to
lighter shades in
baby’s everyday
clothing
For your baby’s home clothing, it’s a
good idea to keep the color choices
within the neutral or lighter range for
they are the ones that will keep your
baby comfortably cool during the day,
provided your baby isn’t in an airconditioned
environment around the
clock. These choices may seem simple
to the eye, and perhaps deemed not
very fashionable to some, but at the
end of the day, it’s still your baby’s
comfort that truly counts.
Prevent heatiness
from diapers
Babies are generally in
diaper all the time, hence
their crotch area tends to
feel hot and stuffy more
compared to anywhere
else on their body. Even
on days that are not too
hot, a baby’s diaper area
may still feel hot and
stuffy due to the layering
of the diaper and shorts/
pants. To prevent this
from happening, choose
pants or shorts made of
thinner, cooler material.
When ever possible,
especially on hot, balmy
days, it’s alright to leave
your baby pant-less with
just his diapers - he’ll be
much more comfortable.
Some things you’ll
realise only when
your baby starts
eating solid food
Parenting is a series (let’s make that a never-ending series) of learning curves to
get pass. We’re practically learning as we go, aren’t we. Well, if you’re a parent of
a baby who is heading towards weaning, you’re in luck. We’re listing down, ahead
of time, a few things you’ll probably run into in the next few weeks or so. We hope
some of them will serve you well as a heads up!
Nutrition
A simple-in-design high chair is best!
All the those fancy
features may be easy on
the eyes, that they will be
far from easy to clean, as
you’ll discover when you
try to get food scraps out
of hinges and grooves.
Believe us, a simple,
seamless design will
probably serve you best.
Your own diet may change
One reason is because you just don’t want to waste
the food your baby left over - after all, it is kind of
delicious! Secondly, while preparing your baby’s food
using fresh, high quality ingredients, you may find
yourself saving precious time by throwing some into
your own cooking.
You’ll get high strung on new
weaning stuff
Really cute baby food storage cube trays. A steamercum-blender.
A feeding bowl that has suckers on the
bottom. Oh yes, this is the time to get them all, so go
for it!
Oh my, milk poo and food poo are
NOT the same!
Suddenly, baby’s poo smells like
a grown up’s, and it’ll make
you wish he was back to
his milk diet. Don’t worry.
In time, your nose will get
used to it.
Weaning is akin to finding one’s
taste in food
Or, perhaps even
acquiring one as it
goes along. Some
foods will be accepted
while others will be
spat out and frowned
upon. Still others
will be flung across
the room as baby
practices his motor
skills. Or perhaps it’s
because he really does
not fancy them.
Some baby
food stains
are really
stubborn
Baby food may
look harmless, till
they get on floors,
clothes, etc, and
dry up. Having
said that, a baby
bib does little to
remedy that -
we’re just saying.
Nutrition
It’s not unusual to have food in
your hair
Yes, your hair. Not baby’s because you would have
given him a bath after his lunch. If you happen to
step out to go grocery shopping after that, don’t be
alarmed. You’re probably not the only one walking
around with cheese sauce in her hair.
Everything tastes better with
mashed banana
Weird but true, mashed banana may turn out to be
your answer to any picky situation. Just mash in a
banana, and he’ll probably eat it.
Now and then, there’ll be epic
moments
For example, when baby happens to love a new food
that you just introduced to him. Text everyone and
bring out the bubbly - it’s time to celebrate!
You’ll panic every time he coughs
It’s natural, and all moms go through this, but each
time your baby coughs while he’s eating, you’ll start to
panic, thinking he’s choking.
Appearance may matter
If you do not like the look of the
food you’re about to ask baby
to try, chances are, he won’t
either. They’re highly sensitive
like that!
Your baby has some phenomenal
facial expressions
Who knew that such a
tiny person could have
such a wide array of
expressions, and most
of them are exhibited
during meal times:
joy, disgust, horror,
wonderment, ick, and
the list goes on.
Wonders Of Childhood
Monitoring the
number of toys
in your home
Can a child have too
many toys? And if so,
does it matter? Can
there possibly be any
downside to this?
Read on…
BabyTalk | July 2019 53

Baby & Toddler
Wonders Of Childhood
Parents will be parents. We can moan,
grumble, complain about the mess our
little one’s toys are making a mess at
home, but the moment we see a new
toy in the store, the only thing we can
think about is how happy or excited
junior will be if he had it. And that’s just
one way how new toys keep popping
up at our homes. We haven’t factored
in the endless numbers of toys received
from our family and friends yet.
Having loads of toys for our children
isn’t exactly harmful thing, for after all,
toys bring joy to kids (and to some toyloving
adults too). However, when you
begin to realise that you keep stepping
on one ever so often, or when it start
to show up in places they don’t belong,
that’s when you’ll realise that there
might be a problem.
And like all other things that we have
excess of at home, toys too have to be
managed well so that they can serve
their purpose and not become a burden.
So, are you ready to play around with
some pointers? (Pun intended!)
Categorise and separate
While this may not address the volume
of toys in your home yet, it’s still a
good starting point. Determine what
kind of toys your little ones should
and should not be playing with, and
also the quality of toys they should
have in their possession. Hint: Some
parents may question the toy’s origins
and where it was manufactured, for
instance. These few factors will get
you started in your effort to narrow
down your decision on which toy goes
where (and which toys are making
their way out of your home!).
Exchange with others
Most toys are age-specific in nature
and children tend to grow out of them
almost as quickly as they grow out
of their expensive clothes! Talk with
your friends who have little ones the
same age about doing some sort of
toy sharing or swapping programme.
This way,your friends’ children and
yours can play with different toys each
week without having to purchase them
all. Also, friends with kids who a little
older can donate some toys to your
child. Or, they can loan them and have
the toys back if or when they have
another child. This, in its own way, give
new purpose to toys, and it’s a
wonderful thing if we really think
about it.
Communicate
your intentions
to others
This may turn out to
be the toughest one, for
family and friends love
to soil and pamper little
ones to high heaven,
don’t they? Still, do try
and communicate your
intentions to manage the
flow of toys into your
home and with some
luck, they’ll understand.
When birthdays and
special events are nearing,
let your family know
your child already has
too more toys than he
can play with. If they
insist on getting presents,
request instead for books.
They are a wonderful
alternative and are so
much more easier to
manage than an overflow
of toys.
You can also try keeping
a wish list at hand, and if
anyone asks what should
they get for junior’s
birthday, for instance,
share with them your
ideas of the ideal gifts for
your child. The outcome
is a win-win one - for the
giver will feel happy to
give you what you asked
for and you’ll be glad
to keep the flow of toys
into your home at a more
manageable pace.
Baby & Toddler
Wonders Of Childhood
A place for
every toy
Have a few decent size
toy bins and ensure that
every toy that’s currently
being played has a place
to be when it’s not being
used. You can even use
specific storage systems
for grouping your child’s
toys You’ll know when
it’s time to give away
some toys when a storage
bin can’t accommodate
them all neatly anymore.
Teach junior the art of
organising
Help your child to be more responsible
for his toys and also, to be more aware
of what he owns by getting him to put
away his toys after playing. Let him get
more involved in the decision of what
goes where.
Incorporate consequences, if you feel
that is necessary. For example, taking
away a toy that doesn't get put away
for a few days might be an effective
way to teach them about appreciation.
Little ones have a tendency to
appreciate a toy that they don't play
with for a while, so if you determine
there is too many toys in the bin, but
that you don't necessarily want to get
rid of them just yet, put them away for
a few weeks or months and reintroduce
them. Your child will welcome them as
if they were new - works every time!
Learn to let go
It’s not the easiest thing for some people,
but even with toys, you’ll have to let
go of some before bringing in new
ones. So, every now and then, make it
a point to take stock of all your child’s
toys - don’t leave out anything. You may
involve your child all the way throughout
this process. Determine which toys
should be kept and which ones are no
longer played with. There are many
second-hand shops and stores that will
gladly accept clean and gently used toys,
so get in the habit of making these types
of donations from your stock to keep
your child’s toys at a manageable volume
and at the same time, let toys that are
still good but are no longer played with
have a new purpose and appreciation in
another home.
The downsides of having
too many toys at a go
It might seem harmless to let your child
have access to every toy in the house,
but the fact is, a little child simply can’t
make the best out of playtime when
there is an overload of toys to play with
- the more toys they are bombarded
with, the more distracted
they will be. What’s
worse is, the longer
this carries on, the less
appreciative they’ll be
when it comes to toys.
So, if you happen to have
lots of toys which you feel
are good quality ones, offer
them in stages over a
period of time instead
of at one go. You’ll see
that it’s worth the wait,
for your child will likely
be more attentive and
Keeping kids safe
in a swimming pool
BY ERIKA PEREZ,
SWIMMING COACH
When your child is in the pool enjoying a good swimming session, as a parent,
it is important for you to take proper safety measures to ensure that nothing
untoward happens to your little one. professional swimming coach Erika Perez
has these tips to share with parents.
Life & Style
Feature
Second is whether the pool has a helping aide or lifeguard
present for the children. If you are not swimming with your
child, you need to make sure that the pool or the club house
has a properly trained lifeguard.
Although, as a swimming instructor, I highly recommend that
parents to be present in the water with their children as that
is the best way to ensure that your children are safe in water,
but in case you are not able to be in the pool with your child,
make sure there are no interruptions or distractions outside
the pool for you.
In simple words, you need to fully devote your time and
attention to your children and keep an eye on them when
they are in the water, lifeguard or no lifeguard.
In this context, I want to share an experience that happened
to me a few weeks ago. I think it is important for me to share
this to caution parents about the dangers that can lurk in
water when they do not pay attention.
I took my kids for a swimming session a few weeks back,
to the club house where we usually go. Being a swimming
teacher, it is really easy for me to put on my swimming suit
and play the role of an instructor as well as a companion to
my kids in water.
We were having an amazing time, when my elder son called
for my attention saying, “mommy, mommy, I think that girl
needs some help”. When I turned around to look at the
direction he was pointing, I saw a little girl, about 4 or 5 years
old was struggling at the other end of the pool.
My son was the first one to reach her and as he had been
trained, he used his legs to push her to the wall where
she could then hold on to, and even in this ongoing
chaos, it took the father of the child a few minutes to
turn his attention from the phone in his hand to what was
happening to his daughter.
As a swimming teacher as well as a parent, I think it is
important to remind parents about the safety measures in the
pool that should be considered before a child goes swimming.
The first thing I would say is “Prevention is better than cure”.
What I mean here is if we take the time to ensure our kids
are swimming in a safe environment with all the necessary
attention, then we are already on the way to a great and safe
time out with the kids.
So here are some points that you should always keep in mind
while taking your child for a swim.
Assess the area
Before you take your children to swim, it is extremely
important to conduct a risk assessment of the pool. This is
not a complicated task and there are just a few very easy
things to keep in mind.
First check the depth of the pool. Are you and your
kids comfortable with this depth and in the event that
something happens would you or your kids be able to get
help or exit easily?
Use the right equipment
Another thing to be careful about is the float. If you are
letting your child in the pool and there is no lifeguard or
trainer available, you need to be careful with the floats.
For instance, I believe the neck float is not a good idea and
I would not recommend it, because toddlers’ heads are
typically heavy in relation to their bodies, they usually can’t
easily turn them to the side or lift them out of the water and
if the child turns over or is upside down, they won’t be able
to come back up on their own.
Arm floats are good for safety as the children can freely
move around with these floats, but it will delay their
swimming abilities.
Personally, I prefer Noodle floats, although I believe there is
still a certain amount of risk associated with them too.
Floats and all safety measures aside, I still believe if you can
take your child to swim, it is best to be in the pool with them
as there is no substitute for direct supervision.
Be Prepared
Finally, I would recommend doing a CPR course. It is
something that if needed will give you the precious few
seconds needed to save a person’s life. Get your paediatrician
to recommend a course for you if you are interested.
Remember, a child is especially at risk for drowning even in a
small amount of water and it can happen in seconds. I would
let this fact sink in to act as a caution for parents everywhere.
Teaching children to swim is one of the best
ways to protect them against drowning and
swimming with your children is not only a great
way to bond with them but also
the best way to keep them
safe. So, get into the pool
and enjoy your time spent
with your kids. You can use
the exercises that I discussed
in my previous article to have fun
while also teaching your kids the fine
art of swimming.
Out & About
Joining hands to improve
the management of asthma:
AstraZeneca partners with
CARiNG pharmacy
AstraZeneca Malaysia and the CARiNG Pharmacy chain have
joined hands in a recent Memorandum of Agreement (MoA)
to embark on a partnership intended to improve the health
and lives of patients with asthma. This partnership marks a
significant milestone as part of the Healthy Lung Malaysia
Programme, an initiative by AstraZeneca Malaysia aimed
at delivering improvements for patients nationwide living with respiratory diseases – particularly with asthma and COPD,
via a multi-faceted approach of increasing disease awareness, building healthcare provider capability, increasing access to
healthcare and improving understanding of disease and effective treatment. The CARiNG pharmacy chain’s landmark decision
makes it the first pharmacy chain to collaborate with AstraZeneca Malaysia to launch the MyAsthma campaign, focused on
empowering patients to enhance their understanding and management of their asthma. The MyAsthma campaign, which
is part of the Healthy Lung programme, focuses on three key areas: patient-centric education and support; knowledge and
capability building for healthcare providers, and digital-based solutions. For more information, please visit CARiNG stores
BMW Malaysia, Safe ‘n Sound and Childline Foundation to Introduce
Child Car Seat Subsidy Programme
In the fifth edition of the BMW Safety 360° Programme, BMW Malaysia has partnered with Childline Foundation – a nonprofit
organisation focused on the awareness and education of child safety and protection – to introduce ‘From Day One’,
a campaign aimed at advocating the importance of child car seats, especially for newborns. The campaign kickstarted with
the support of Chicco Malaysia where the first six babies born on Father’s Day at Hospital Putrajaya received a Chicco KeyFit
30 infant car seat. The new parents also learned about the best child safety practices from Childline Foundation’s passenger
safety consultants. These include the right criteria for choosing a child car seat, proper methods for installation, as well as
the lifecycle of a child car seat. Harald Hoelzl, Managing Director of
BMW Group Malaysia said, “As we near the enforcement of mandatory
use of child car seats in 2020, we believe it is important to continue
advocating the importance of child car seats, especially for newborns.
The focus of ‘From Day One’ is to ensure parents know how to keep
their children safe from the moment they leave the hospital. We want
to make the use of child car seats instinctive; a basic practice when it
comes to parenthood. This is why we are constantly partnering with
experts from the industry to provide critical child safety education to
parents and to make child car seats more accessible.”
TURN “SCREEN TIME” TO
“QUALITY FAMILY TIME” AT
SUNWAY LAGOON
While smartphones and tablets have greatly influenced our
lives in more ways that we can imagine, they also have a
downside. Children tend to spend significantly more time
spent indoors, particularly with these gadgets.
Many experts have iterated that ideally, kids should be playing
outside for three hours each day. However, the sobering
reality is that the average child today spends less than four
hours a week playing outdoors.
A research conducted at the University of Sydney in Australia
found that children and teens who were more active
outdoors scored higher with regard to social functioning,
whereas teens who spent more time being sedentary indoors
more often reported feeling lonely and shy.
Indeed, researchers and experts have all agreed on such
findings time and time again. Active play outdoors is good for
kids and teens. However, the hot and humid weather in
Malaysia can many times put a damper on “outdoor time”
and this summer is forecasted to be a hot one.
An awesome way to “beat the heat” for this season while
still finding ample time for outdoor play is to engage in
activities in which the whole family can participate, yet fun
(and cool!) enough to factor out circumstances such as the
weather. One great place where this can be achieved is
Malaysia’s very own Sunway Lagoon.
This summer season, Sunway Lagoon, encourages families to
bond together with a host of outdoor fun activities! Sunway
Lagoon offers a truly remarkable experience to remember for
the whole family (especially children!) with over with over 90
rides and attractions spread across six themed parks – Water
Park, Amusement Park, Extreme Park, Wildlife Park, Scream
Park and Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon.
Sunway Lagoon offers memorable experiences for everyone,
both young and old; from milder water rides to wild-and-crazy
thrillers, which older teens and even their parents can enjoy.
Watch your little ones forget about their gadgets as they cool
off at Little Zimbabwe and Splish
Splash for an interactive water
spray experience.
So put those gadgets away and
enjoy the “Best Day Ever” with
family and friends at Sunway
Lagoon! Attracting visitors from
around the globe for over 25
years, Sunway Lagoon has
gleaned a host of accolades and
awards in recent times, including
winning the Best Outdoor Edutainment and Best Family
Friendly Destination categories at the recent BabyTalk &
MamaPapa Readers’ Choice Awards 2019.
So, you know that when it comes to spending quality family
time outdoors, Sunway Lagoon is the place to be.
Sunway Lagoon is open daily from 10:00am to 6:00pm. For
