Ian’s on top of the world

To travel the world is top on a lot of people’s

to-do in life list, but a man from Chesterfield

is taking it literally. Deborah Wain reports

I

AN Griffin, from Ashgate, has set himself the challenge of

visiting all of the 195 countries on the planet and he has now

passed the half-way point.

A recent trip to Rwanda, on the 25th anniversary of the genocide

there, brought the total he has visited to 104.

He has ticked off every country in Europe, while other places he has

visited include Japan, Uzbekistan, Ghana, Chile, Argentina, Israel,

Qatar, Singapore, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Mongolia, and Kyrgyzstan.

Ian, a utility agent, said: “I got the travel bug from watching the

1978 World Cup Finals in Argentina. I watched each match as a

youngster and wondered what each country was like. I started out in

May 1982 with a visit to Calella in Spain.

“Generally, my wife will travel with me but after a visit to

Kazakhstan five years ago she would now rather stay at home when

it comes to the more obscure places!

“My favourite place was Buenos Aires. Watching football with River

Plate playing Brazilian side Sao Paulo in the Libertadores Cup, a visit

to Eva Peron's grave, and a wander round the La Boca district; a

beautiful city. Next, a day-trip by hydrofoil across the River Plate to

the Uruguyan capital Montivedeo, and finally finishing up with a tour

around the Iguazu falls, which is situated on the border of Argentina,

Brazil and Paraguay.”

Ian added that his most interesting trip to date has been a visit to

South Korea.

He commented: “You can take a tour up to the South/North Korean

border which basically is a concrete 'plinth' where you have South

and North Korean guards armed and standing facing each other over

the divide.

“You are asked for your passport and have to sign a declaration and

then you can step into the small 'blue' building where the two sides

meet if they want to discuss anything. In the middle of the room is a

table which sits exactly on the border. The North Koreans enter from

the 'North' door and South Koreans from the 'South' door.”

A

UGUST is upon us and we’re well into the summer

holidays. If you’re looking to explore what our town has to

offer you and your family, then this is the time to do it!

We have more festivals and events in and around the town centre

than ever before. The shortlist for the Chesterfield Food and Drink

Awards has also been released, offering a great starting point for

the very best places to eat and drink.

It’s a great way to kick-start the summer holidays with the kids.

What better way to entice them off their screens than with the

promise of a tasty treat followed by a day of learning, disguised as

fun and intrigue?

There’s a multitude of events going on in the area – from canal

cruises, treasure hunts and miniature train rides to hands on

history at Bolsover Castle, science roadshows and the Chesterfield

Food and Drink Festival. There is something to suit every taste

(pun intended!).

As the events calendar has grown year on year, so has

Chesterfield’s fortunes. I am delighted that we can, once again,

turn the spotlight on the town in the annual Chesterfield

Investment Summit. This year the theme is supporting

communities through regeneration.

The increased footfall in the town centre and attendance at the

many events is evidence that Chesterfield’s regeneration is

successful.

More than £1bn of developments are on site and more are on the

way. 2019 is the year that we are seeing spades in the ground on a

number of much anticipated sites, like Northern Gateway, Elder

Way and Chesterfield Waterside. All these sites are, in turn,

creating employment opportunities.

There are now more jobs at Markham Vale that when it was a

colliery. A record number of 2,236 people are currently employed

there; that’s 200 more people than were employed at the former

colliery site in its 1980s heyday. Proof that Chesterfield’s

regeneration strategy is working.

And we have more success stories to look forward to. Avant

Homes is to begin building 173 homes at Waterside later this year

after receiving detailed planning permission. Pronto Industrial

Paints Ltd have also acquired a new site that will treble their

existing space.

Whether you’re a resident or business, it’s important that we

come together as a community to support the town’s growth in

order to safeguard our future success. Together we really do make

a difference.

If you’re interested in the ongoing regeneration of Chesterfield

and finding out about how you can support it and get involved, then

register to attend the Summit which takes place on 11th

September at Casa Hotel at www.Chesterfield.co.uk.

HE 50th anniversary of the Moon landings was depicted in

WITH GREAT CONFIDENCE COMES GREAT SUCCESS

Why vinyl puts

technology

in a spin

Our teenage

correspondent,

George Harris,

explains why the

‘vinyl revival’

appeals to him

N

OT long ago, the vinyl record - a form of listening to music

which has been around for over a century - was practically

on the brink of extinction.

CDs and MP3s disrupted the near monopoly that records had over

the music industry and shunned the format into obscurity.

However, in recent years records have enjoyed a comeback, a

comeback that some have dubbed the “vinyl revival”.

I grew up surrounded by music and records and both of my

parents work in jobs relating to music. My mum owns Tallbird

Records in town, which she started to fill the void left by Hudson’s

and HMV’s departures over five years ago.

We’ve played a small part in the resurrection of the nearlydeceased

vinyl record. All across the country, independent record

shops like ours have sprung up to meet the demand of the general

public and they are becoming more popular and recognised every

year that goes by.

Like many other people, I stream tunes every day and that is the

way I listen to most of my music through my phone, browsing the

endless stream of content that services like Spotify and Apple

Music hand out.

However, I buy records too. Because of the availability of any and

all kinds of music nowadays, I tend to buy the albums that I

already love.

I do this because I find the actual collection of records, actually

in front of you, in real life, is more engaging than a list of albums

on a phone screen.

You feel like you have curated a special collection of your

favourite music that took time to put together, so it is more special

and worthwhile when you finally find that one album you were

looking for, instead of the instant gratification that listening to your

favourite tunes on your phone gives you.

Chesterfield is lucky to have record shops in the town centre. I

am definitely biased, but I obviously think that Tallbird Records is

one of, if not the best, shop in town and I really like exploring the

racks and searching for a great album.

The world nearly lost this small part of culture that has survived

for such a long time, so I’m glad that it has returned with renewed

life.

I’m going to carry on collecting my favourite albums and I hope

that this “vinyl revival” never dies out.

Invitation to explore

ancient chapel

O

NE of the oldest surviving buildings in Chesterfield will be

open and free to explore on the 14th, 19th and 21st

September, 10am-4pm.

Elder Yard Chapel was built in

1694, the congregation was

founded by Rev John Billingsley

in 1662 and initially the

congregation secretly met in

private houses or fields. In

1689 the Act of Toleration

allowed a meeting place to be

built for religious worship.

During your visit you will be able to look around the building and

its contents with the aid of a free information pamphlet or with a

tour from one of the congregation.

There will be a musical concert from 11:45am-12:30pm on

Saturday 14th September. On Saturday 21st, there will be a coffee

morning with cakes and a book sale, supporting the Send a Child to

Hucklow Charity, which organises holidays in Derbyshire for

children of low income families.

Visitors will be able to see displays of local examples of ‘people

power’ including previous members of the congregation,

suffragism in Chesterfield and the Chapel’s resident singing group,

The Tuneless Choir, for people who lack the ability, confidence or

practice to sing in tune. Younger visitors will be entertained by a

quiz around the building and garden. The monthly service will take

place on Sunday, 15th September, between 3-4pm.

Elder Yard Chapel is located between the Co-op supermarket on

Elder Way and the Victoria Shopping Centre on Knifesmithgate.

The Drifters.

Hits include ‘One Fine Day’, ‘Beautiful’, ‘You've Got A Friend’, ‘The

Locomotion’, ‘I Feel The Earth Move’, ‘You Make Me Feel Like a

timeless and we’re finding audiences often singing along to wellknown

tunes they didn’t know were Carole King hits! It’s a great,

feel-good night out.”

my primary daily responsibility will always be to represent

Chesterfield. Alongside this, the 650 MPs also have an

opportunity to discuss and influence policy around both

specialist areas of knowledge or around Britain’s global role in

the world.

There are a great deal of Parliamentary delegations coming into and

out of the UK from other countries and these not only further

relationships between nations (something that will never be more

crucial in the post-Brexit age) but also allow for learning from other

cultures and parliaments.

Understanding more about global issues also enables MPs to

influence and scrutinise Foreign Office policies and responses to

developing situations.

One such opportunity recently presented itself when I was asked to

join a cross-party Parliamentary delegation to meet the recently

elected government of the Kurdistan region in Iraq.

Kurdistan is a devolved region in the north of Iraq who have great

warmth towards Britain both despite, and because of, the great

hardship that they have suffered over many decades.

The Kurds are the world’s largest diaspora not to have a country of

their own, and there are around 30 million Kurds split between Iraq,

Turkey, Syria and Iran. The Iraqi Kurds were brutally oppressed by

Saddam Hussain whose genocides killed tens of thousands and used

chemical weapons against them following an uprising after the first

Gulf War.

Foreign Office advice is still against all travel to Iraq, but I was

assured in advance that the Kurdistan region is very safe and it was

clear both in Government circles and out in the wider community

that there is a great deal of affection for Britain in the region.

Iraqi Kurds describe the 2003 Gulf War as ‘the liberation’ and whilst

the oppression of the Kurds and Shia Muslims by Saddam has been

replaced by unsatisfactory replacement Iraqi governments, they

clearly believe that their future prospects are brighter than their past.

It was a visit of contrasts. In meetings with the Foreign Office

Minister, the Governor of two different Kurdish regions, the Speaker

and their respective Chambers of Commerce, the possibilities and

hunger for British investment in the region was palpable. They were

at pains to assure us that there were huge opportunities for British

services and products as well as

investment in industries other than the oil

industry that has been their staple for

years.

For example, there is no such thing as car

insurance there - which hasn’t seemed to

reduce the risk appetite of local drivers!

There is also a historic distrust of banking

and financial services, meaning that there

is basically no lending or mortgages.

Major US hoteliers have got in there and

there are lavish ‘International’ five-star

16

Toby Perkins MP (second left) with

other visitors and some of their hosts

‘We met families

who have lived for

five years in a

room with

a canvas sheet

hotels, but their

tourism industry has

huge further

potential.

Alongside these

great opportunities we also visited an Internally Displaced People’s

camp and met with Yazidi and Sunni refugees who have fled for their

lives and live in utter squalor.

We met families who have lived for five years in a single

breeze-blocked room with a canvas sheet over their heads in 40

degree heat.

Despite their deprivation, they told us that at least they are safe

there and would rather be there than at home where they face

further attacks.

Many of the Yazidi families were lacking their matriarch as many of

the women were stolen by ISIS and taken to be ‘wives’ of the

conquering soldiers.

The Sunnis (previously favoured by Saddam) are now mistreated by

Shia militia with the Iraqi government unable or unwilling to protect

them.

These people do not have refugee status in international eyes

because they are still within their own country, and the Kurds, who

have a historic knowledge of what it is like to flee persecution, are

largely carrying the burden of attempting to house, clothe and feed

tens of thousands of these people alone. There were around 8,000

people at the single camp we visited.

These visits bring home the reality of life and the complexity of

some of these global situations that receive a five-minute slot on our

news. They need more than charity and, despite what you might

often hear, they welcome the involvement of the UK and the West.

They clearly trust our institutions more than their own.

As citizens of the world, we should never

complacently believe we have all the

answers to complex situations overseas, but

nor does that mean that we should offer

nothing more than occasional guilt-relieving

charity either.

My visit to Kurdistan will live forever in my

memory and I hope that I can encourage the

UK government and companies to consider

anew what more we can do for this beautiful

region, with huge potential as well as

challenges.

HESE striking photographs of poppies - and this month’s

wonderful cover picture of Chatsworth - were taken by Clare

Davison from Old Whittington, a regular contributor to Twist .

Clare first became fascinated by photography after attending

RAF Waddington Airshow.

She explained: “I took the camera and from there I have just

kept going.

“I sent an image of the Crooked Spire to Twist that appeared on

the front cover and that was just an amazing moment for me; I'd

never achieved anything like that or even thought I could achieve

that and it made me want to achieve more.

“I won my first competition this year which was such a high.”

For Clare, photography is a way of relaxing after work.

on photography

“I left Maplin as an assistant manager five weeks before the

store in Chesterfield was closed for good; I'm now working for a

well-known retail company as a floor manager.

“Photography got me through the unknown at Maplin. We

knew that at some point we would be closing if a buyer wasn’t

found.

“From February 2018 to May 2018 was very stressful but, at the

end of the day, I knew I could pick up my camera, head out in

the car, just relax and enjoy the peace and quite.

“Photography helps you see things that you normally wouldn’t

notice and you capture that moment, be it a sunset, sunrise, a

family day out... or a field of poppies.

“It's about capturing that split second in time.”

Glorious in gold... Lesley Garrett on

stage once again in Chesterfield

Forty years a favourite

Good to see you again... Lesley Garrett

filled The Winding Wheel for her

recent concert. Deborah Wain reports

O

PERA star Lesley Garrett joined Chesterfield Philharmonic

Choir for a joyous performance - 40 years on from when

she last appeared with them as a student.

A capacity audience packed The Winding Wheel for the occasion on

one of the warmest nights of the summer and enjoyed a feast of

music.

The popular soprano, who hails from Doncaster, declared the return

visit: “Better late than never!”.

It was back in July 1979 that Lesley Garrett was a guest of ‘The

Phil’, at the Crooked Spire. She was then a final year student at the

Royal Academy of Music.

Lesley was invited back by musical director Steven Roberts as the

choir wrapped up its 52nd successful season in Chesterfield.

Several singers who were on stage performed with Lesley 40 years

ago and have seen her go on to huge success.

It has emerged that following the original concert, choir committee

notes described Lesley as “most entertaining” and “a vivacious young

lady”.

Together with her accompanist Anna Tilbrook – herself a regular

performer at Europe’s major concert halls and festivals – Lesley

performed both classical and lighter pieces.

These included ‘Pie Jesu’, from Durufle’s Requiem, sung during the

original concert, ‘Habanera’, from Bizet’s Carmen, Sting’s ‘Fields of

Gold’ and a medley from ‘The Sound of Music’ – in which she starred

as the Mother Abbess in the West End.

Lesley declared that each time she sang numbers from the Rogers

and Hammerstein favourite, it was “like the first time”.

The concert showcased not only the talent and skills of the

Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir, accompanied by Liz Heath, but

Chesterfield Parish

Church Choir, which

includes young members.

Satisfyingly, the evening

also provided an

unforgettable opportunity

for an up-and-coming

soprano, 18-year-old

Charlotte Potter, who is

about to study at the

Guildhall School of Music

and Drama.

All of the artists came

together for a rousing

final performance of

‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

Sponsors of the show

were Gloria Havenhand

and Medibee, Banner

Jones solicitors and Dr

Nathaniel Pearson.

Village opens garden gates

B

EAUTIFUL gardens in Barlow welcomed

visitors during the village’s popular Open

Gardens event, now in its seventh year.

An estimated 650 people went from garden to

garden and enjoyed tea and cakes at St Lawrence

Church, which benefits from proceeds.

Plots ranged from small courtyards, to allotments

and large rambling gardens and even Sudbrook

Hall.

One of the organisers, Sally Rushby, said: “We had

lots of return visitors who have put this day aside in

their diary for each year.

“They were very complimentary about the

gardens and thought the car ferry service

through the village to all gardens was a great

help.

“The weather was, thank goodness, on our side

again this year and made the event even more

pleasant, the flowers were blooming.”

The Falcon

Yard team,

Porteous and

Simon Jones

HESTERFIELD’S Falcon Yard Podiatry and Chiropody Practice

has welcomed two new expert practitioners.

The addition of Simon Jones and Ali Mireh to the friendly team has

broadened the specialist skills base patients have access to.

Simon graduated from the University of Salford with special

interest in sports medicine and treating children's podiatry

problems. He worked in Stafford before moving to Stockport, where

he obtained a Master’s degree and led children’s podiatry services

in the NHS along with treating adults and also running a private

practice.

Simon keeps his interest in children's podiatry, leading a national

group of podiatrists and is also a member of the governing body of

podiatrists.

Ali completed his Master’s in ‘Theory of Podiatric Surgery’ at the

University of Huddersfield and has extensive experience working

within NHS surgical units at Sheffield, Buxton, Ilkeston and

Chesterfield.

He has a particular interest in steroid injection therapy of the foot

and ankle to treat heel and other generalised pain. Ali also provides

needling treatment to tackle persistent verrucas.

Falcon Yard Podiatry and Chiropody Practice has been an

established presence in one of Chesterfield town centre’s oldest

buildings for over 20 years.

Ali and Simon join Ian Bateman who has been practising podiatry

for ten years. He qualified with a first-class degree from Salford

University and then went to practise in Sydney, Australia, where he

developed a real interest in sports podiatry and orthotic therapy.

Ian returned to the UK in 2013 to run Falcon Yard Podiatry and

Chiropody Practice and has recently set up another practice in

Glossop.

The practice, open six days a week, provides all general chiropody

and podiatry services for patients across the age range and across

Derbyshire.

Patients who have a fungal nail infection have a new effective

treatment option in the Lacuna Method.

Completing the team, and first point of contact for patients, is

receptionist and administrator Sharon Porteous.

Group’s art gift

A

Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust staff with some of the Mental Health Carers’ Art Group in Bayheath House

CHESTERFIELD art group for carers of people with mental

health issues has donated paintings to brighten up one of

Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s bases in the

town.

Reception and office areas at Bayheath House, location for the

Chesterfield Central Neighbourhood Team in Rose Hill West, now

look a lot more appealing thanks to the work of the town’s Mental

Health Carers’ Art Group.

The group meets every Friday from 10.30am–12.30pm at

Chesterfield Labour Club, and members are encouraged to express

themselves – even if they begin by saying they can’t draw.

Karen Wheeler, professional lead for Chesterfield Neighbourhood

and Central, said: “Members of the art group suggested that they

would love to contribute to enhancing the environment of the waiting

room. The local staff worked closely with the carers and our estates

team to make this possible.”

Jo Slinn, admin manager at Bayheath House, was involved in

organising and hanging the artwork, with subjects ranging from still

life and landscape to a series documenting a recovery journey.

Malcolm Grieve runs the art group, which he started about four

years ago with the aim of encouraging any carers who enjoy, or might

enjoy, creative work which would also give them some relief from

their caring responsibilities.

He said: “The group offers two hours of respite and everyone is

really encouraging. When we were asked if we would like to

contribute some pictures to Bayheath House, of course we said yes.

Staff have supported us so well.”
