ENVIRONMENTS,

NATURALLY

Our world is one big connected ecosystem. Everything we do, see, sense, feel, or experience has a

connection to our spiritual, emotional and physical environment. The classroom is a connection to

these environments. Our role in the classroom should be one that promotes connections to nature and

conservation, connections for children and families and connections to communities and culture. These

organic connections shape the classroom into a stronger, healthier and more holistic environment for

children to learn, experience, transform and evolve. Join us in this evolution and transformation. Join us

as we shape classroom environments, naturally.

NATURE AND

CONSERVATION

A walk through the woods. Mist rising off a field. The sound of rain on the forest floor. The pattern of

shadows and light that dapple the ground beneath a tree. We believe in bringing the outside in and

shaping sensorial-based spaces through design to create organic learning models that enhance and

encourage creative exploration. We aspire to create solutions through products and materials that

promote clean environments and reduce or eliminate VOCs, while shaping healthy experiences both

inside and outside the classroom. Using materials such as Canadian hard maple, which lasts for decades,

possibly even centuries, as well as other FSC compliant species, we extend the life cycle and longevity of

product use, and significantly reduce replacements and the impact on our planet as a result.

DESIGN AND

INNOVATION

Emergent ecosystems of ideas, coupled with talent and technology, breed innovation in design and

manufacturing. University’s creative team is made up of industrial and product designers, surface and

textile designers, product engineers, writers and illustrators, architects, and many others in creative

fields, working in connected offices globally that specialize in innovation in early childhood education

environmental and product design. Collaborations and partnerships with universities, authors, educators,

and private and public schools also help shape the nature and direction of University’s offerings; products

that are ultimately engineered and manufactured to meet the durability, quality and safety standards of a

global early childhood education environment.

CHILDREN

AND FAMILIES

Preschool is an extension of the home; both a link to primary education and a jumping off spot to

primary school and the world at large. Although all areas of the classroom are important – our heart

and our history are in block play and dramatic play; critical areas of the classroom where children

construct their world and understand and challenge assumptions about their roles in an ever-changing

society. Discover University, and discover how we create products that support these theories, and

challenge notions about design and the environment in ways that help promote holistic learning

models that strengthen the bonds between children and families while fostering independence,

curiosity and self-determination.

EVOLUTION AND

TRANSFORMATION

At the far reaches of our conscience lies the jellyfish. Scary, gooey, transparent and brainless, acting

like plants – solely on impulse. Remove the jellyfish from our oceans and many dependent organisms

would decline or die as a result. They have a connection to us, and can live forever, like evolutionary and

transformative ideas in education.

Ultimately, we are judged not by the quality of our ideas, but by the quality of our evolution and

transformation. Do we understand and incorporate new concepts and ideas that will create and shape

better experiences in the preschool environment for children, families and communities? Do we absorb

the impact of our actions – large and small – and understand and guide those actions and their impact on

the classroom, our customers, and ultimately on nature and the earth as a whole?

INFANT : birth to 18 months

From the moment they are born, infants are constantly learning and experiencing

new sensations every day. They learn how to move their bodies, communicate their

emotions and desires, and interact with different people in their lives. Because

they are always discovering new things, infants need to be in welcoming, familiar

environments that encourage their experimentation and interactions with the world

around them, while also being large enough to include their caretakers.

Infant Environments

Infants are in a constant state of stimulation, which means they can easily become overwhelmed in new

environments. That’s why infant spaces should be safe environments to explore and engage with as they

learn about the world around them while physical interactions with caregivers provide much needed

sensory opportunities that stimulate growth and development. Infant environments with simple yet

engaging decorations using color harmonies and interesting objects arranged at their eye level allow

them to observe and interact with their new surroundings without becoming overstimulated.

Planning an Infant Space

When creating an infant space, focus on the needs and milestones of the infants that will be occupying it. Make sure to fill the space with child-height

furniture, appropriate care centers and a few adult-sized sitting areas for parents and caretakers to easily spend one-on-one time with the children.

Caregivers should also be able to easily see the children in their care at all times and acrylic-backed furniture pieces, pass-thru storage and gate

system panels with windows can provide this assurance while allowing natural light to filter throughout the classroom. For more classroom inspiration,

TODDLER : 18 months to 3 years

As toddlers grow, a desire for independence begins to sprout. They want the

ability to decide what appeals to them, to make independent choices, and express

themselves. Ensuring that they are in an environment that naturally encourages

all of these things is vital for their development. Appropriately-sized furniture,

cushioned seating and natural colors all encourage children to comfortably exert

their new-found independence and make their own choices and discoveries.

Toddler Environments

The space your toddler occupies is just as important as the educators who teach them and the lessons

they learn. Toddlers should be able to exercise their independence easily, gathering toys off of low

shelves or working on projects at toddler-height tables. Appropriate items and supplies should be in

clear bins or floor baskets for toddlers to easily find what they are looking for. Incorporate interesting

natural objects, thoughtful color harmonies and a variety of textured surfaces that enhance the hands-on

learning toddlers need.

Planning a Toddler Space

Toddlers are still learning how to control their bodies, and need wide areas to practice gross-motor skills. As you plan your toddler space, it

is important to plan out interest areas carefully and thoughtfully. Dramatic play areas should feature realistic props and furniture, with a lot of

different textures and fabrics for them to feel and play with. As toddlers learn to play together there needs to be plenty of opportunities and

space for group play. Individual interest areas, such as a block play or art corner, will need dedicated, appropriately sized spaces. Separate the

classroom with rugs and shelving units to properly dedicate the right amount of space for each area. For more classroom inspiration, visit our

PRESCHOOL : 3 years to 5 years

Preschool is an exciting time in a child’s life. They branch out to try new things,

learn how to make friends, and begin to express their thoughts and ideas more

fully. Nurturing their curiosities and social growth is very important at this stage,

and will establish how they approach learning and communicating with their peers

for the rest of their lives. Children need the right environment and educators to

help them grow into bright, inquisitive learners.

Preschool Environments

The preschool environment should offer inspiration, support and encouragement for a child’s growth and

curiosity. Children learn best in areas that are well organized and aesthetically appealing. Natural objects

and woven textures bring attractive, explorative elements into the classroom for children to touch,

observe and interact with. Preschoolers are old enough to understand different customs and lifestyles, so

use this time to incorporate cultural pieces into your classroom environment.

Planning a Preschool Space

Educators need to plan their spaces ahead of time to properly address all of a child’s educational and social needs in order to have a fulfilling

educational environment. Organized, natural environments with focal points give children a defined sense of purpose. Sensory areas, block play,

and art stations provide several spaces for children to collaborate, express themselves and practice new skills in. SSome interest areas require

more dedicated space than other and can be easily delineated through the use of carpets and spacious shelves. When a child can comfortably and

independently explore and interact with their surroundings, and the environment is designed with these interactions in mind, children are able to

better understand how the world works and how to explore their curiosities. For more classroom inspiration, visit our virtual room planner page at

INFANT CARE

While it is important to have the essential equipment

needed to care for babies safely and efficiently, we

should also provide them with moments to richly

explore their very new surroundings. Babies are born

with boundless curiosity, and carefully planned infant

environments nurture their sense of discovery and

motivate them to ponder and experiment with their

world. Little fingers love to explore interesting textures

like woven baskets, smooth floors and soft carpets.

Whether they are being cuddled in a caregiver’s lap,

playing during floor time or being carried around,

infants are instinctively drawn to beautiful patterns,

constrasting colors and textures and nature displayed at

varying levels within the classroom environment. If we

watch closely, they will teach us what they need!

INFANT CARE | CRIBS

Cribs

Infants need to nap several times a day, so it is important to dedicate a space in your

classroom for naps and quiet time. Softer lighting, minimal decorations and sturdy,

unembellished cribs help define where the nap time area is in the classroom. Reinforce

which spaces are meant for sleeping and which are meant for play by keeping toys and

knick-knacks out of the nap time area. Cribs should have enough room for an infant to lay

down, sit and safely stand up. Clear sides ensure that babies can still see their caretakers

across the room, and allow them to quietly observe the source of any noise they hear until

they drift off to sleep.

Physical barriers help children adapt to different play areas of the classroom, as well as ensuring a safe

separation of mixed-age groups who occupy the same space. Help all your little ones feel comfortable

in a single space by sectioning off areas for more mobile and less mobile children. High-energy

toddlers need to interact freely with their environment and explore different spaces of the classroom,

while younger infants require more quiet explorations and one-on-one interactions with caretakers.

The Harmony Panel System, with its various windows, gates and panels, provides observation stations

TODDLER LOFTS

As toddlers start to crawl, climb and walk by

themselves, they need a space that encourages them

to interact with the world around them at different

perspectives. Lofts provide unique spatial opportunities

by raising children to different elevations and offer

different perspectives to see their world. Toddlers can

use these different vantage points as another way to

interact and develop connections with their peers.

As toddlers explore the lofts together they begin

to develop empathy: encouraging more nervous

classmates down the slide, playing peek-a-boo with

younger children and holding hands while traveling

across bridges. Each of our toddler lofts creates a

beautiful, inviting space that is just the right size for

SHELVING + STORAGE

Ask any teacher and they’ll tell you that the unsung

hero of the classroom is storage furniture. It goes

unnoticed in the diverse landscape of ideas, people,

objects and emotions that make up the early childhood

education classroom, but the careful selection and

placement of storage furniture will amplify the

intentionality of the educational model.

Our broad selection of shapes, sizes and options, and a

focus on visibility and functionality helps educators with

more than simply storing objects. We help teachers

build upon a foundation of carefully researched and

executed curricular models, and help children to

create and build their own unique narratives within the

“Children love to play, but it isn’t always

easy to see the learning opportunities

when we see children engaged in play. The

challenges for us is to understand what

children are doing when they are playing

and how play behaviors lead to learning.

-- Pamela C. Phelps, Let’s Build

Block Play Areas

When children have a dedicated block play area they have the

opportunity to engage in collaborative, constructive play that is

interdisplinary in terms of developing skills in both the sciences and

the arts, and draws upon a shared narrative relative to a child or group

of children. Children need an unending supply of materials, and our

two and three-tiered open shelving allows for quick loading and

unloading of unit blocks, hollow blocks, arches and tunnels and other

materials that support this critical domain. Labeling the block play

shelves builds shape recognition, vocabulary, and other cognitive skills

while also keeping the block play area organized and consistent.

Loose parts are an essential feature of a great classroom. They can be used

for art projects, dramatic play accessories and symbolic representation within

open-ended play. A well-equipped classroom should have a variety of loose

parts for children to touch, examine and explore, along with a place to store

them properly. Multi-cubby storage areas provide ample space for loose

objects to be easily organized and put away. Individual cubbies are perfect for

dividing loose parts, and labeled bins encourage independence as children

gather and put away the items they need.

important consideration in the classroom environment. Our gently curved storage units create

unique and organic divisions between high and low activity areas, forming subtle pathways

A kiss, a hug, a wave goodbye. Transitional furniture

such as lockers and cubbies--which define a child’s

physical and emotional connection to their own objects,

emotions throughout the day.

With open cubbies, hooks, baskets, personalized name

entryway furniture is the first and last touchpoint for a

child in their classroom, and should be considered more

than just storage. They are both functional equipment,

Through a Child’s Eyes

Transitional Spaces

Opportunities to say hello and goodbye to a parent or loved one in a

comforting environment is so important to young children beginning

to venture outside the perceived safety of their own homes and

families. Children will be more emotionally prepared to learn and grow

if given opportunities to adequately greet and bid their loved ones

farewell at the transition points of their school days. Early education

facilities should consider how to create warm and inviting entryways

for these important interactions by incorporating comfortable seating

and surroundings with windows at their eye level so children can see

their loved ones off or when they return to pick them up at the end of

a long and exciting day.

TABLES + CHAIRS

The flow of a classroom and how children can move

within the space can greatly affect the learning

outcomes of that environment. When students can

freely and confidently move around the classroom,

they can easily transition between unstructured

play, lessons and quiet activities. A classroom with

properly-sized furniture, placed intentionally to provide

unrestricted movement, encourages children to explore

and embrace their new space. The areas between

the furniture become pathways with destinations to

explore, and the furniture evolves from classroom

objects into active pieces of the learning process.

-- Sandra Duncan, EdD

Go With the Flow

Just as jellyfish need an uninhibited current to flow through the ocean,

children need freedom to move and explore the classroom and the

interest areas within. Thoughtful furniture placement can form walking

paths that cross and intersect throughout the classroom, allowing children

to travel to different spaces with ease. The position and choice of tables

plays a major role in this consideration, and their shape and placementin

the classroom can help enhance the classroom flow. A rectangular

table, angled at 45 degrees, transforms an ordinarily static space into an

environment that is easier to navigate and softer around the edges.

DRAMATIC PLAY

How often do you see a child talking on a pretend

phone in a deep voice, or repeating something an adult

has said before bursting into giggles? While it may

seem silly, copying actions and habits is actually a vital

aspect of a child’s social development.

Children learn how to understand the world by

mimicking what they see the adults in their lives do and

reenacting scenarios they have experienced. Imitating

their parents washing the dishes, acting out what they

did over the weekend with a friend, and recreating

realistic scenarios all help them learn valuable life

skills and how to interact with other people. In the

classroom, children should be provided with a fully

equipped dramatic play area that encourages them to

explore and reenact the world around them.

Many adults have fond memories as a child banging on pots or carefully pouring cups

of flour into cookie batter. They remember their parents cooking with them, friends

coming over with platters of food and recipes being passed down from generation to

generation. The kitchen is an important space in many children’s lives, and should be

given a high level of thought and consideration in the classroom. Quality classroom

kitchen furniture encourages children to cook their favorite recipes and invite their

friends to share meals with them.

DRAMATIC PLAY | KITCHENS

Toddlers imitate people they’ve watched.

They love to scoop, stir, pour, and even

offer a ‘bite’ as they reimagine new roles

for themselves. Through this play, they

might practice new words, like the names

of their utensils, and recreate a sequence

of events that they’ve observed.

-- Laura Wilhelm, EdD

All-In-One + Compact Kitchens

A limited classroom space should never prevent a teacher from being

able to provide all the tools necessary for a child to learn, explore

and play to their heart’s content. These self-contained kitchens offer

the same thoughtful design touches as their full-sized counterparts -

clicking, color-coded knobs; see-through ice machines; red burners for

cooking favorite meals; and clear acrylic windows in the stove – in a

compact environment for quality play experiences.

Dress Up Storage

When it is time for pretend play, children often want accessories that complement

the scenes they have imagined. The dramatic play area should be fully equipped with

realistic dress up clothes to help children reenact these scenarios. A dress up storage

unit easily displays costumes with ample storage for additional accessories. The

open, curved profile encourages children to easily choose or change their outfits and

continue their fantasies and reenactments with friends.

CARPETS

It is important to choose the colors introduced into your

classroom with the same thoughtfulness you give to your own

home. Children are just as affected by the colors and color

scheme of a room as adults are. Bright, clashing colors that

overstimulate the senses will cause children to feel uneasy

or distracted. Stark, white walls and plain floors are equally

discouraging in a learning environment.

Children respond to different types of color harmony depending

on their age and developmental growth. Softer shades of primary

colors lightly stimulate an infant’s senses without overwhelming

them. Natural patterns and colors are great for toddlers, who are

often fascinated by the world around them. As preschool-age

children begin to express themselves and their individuality, use

the opportunity to introduce more vivid, international patterns to

encourage the exploration of different cultures and communities.

By designing a classroom with an age appropriate color scheme,

children will feel that their learning environment is an inviting

place in which to explore and develop their interests.

CARPETS | NATURAL

Naturally Inspired

Children are fascinated with the world around them and are constantly

trying to understand and experiment with whatever they find. When not

given instructions they will create rules, observations, and hypotheses

all on their own. Therefore, it is an educator’s duty to ensure children

feel confident enough to explore these possibilities in their class.

Incorporating familiar, natural environments into a classroom’s design

is a great way to encourage children to feel more comfortable about

expressing themselves. Carpets that are inspired by natural colors,

patterns and scenes help children experience and reenact what they see

outside, inside. The organic, whimsical nature of the carpets provides an

inviting template for play and discovery.

READING CENTERS

The lively, dynamic scenery of a classroom can

sometimes overwhelm or overstimulate young children.

Having a quiet, comfortable and cozy space for reading

and recentering themselves in the classroom provides

an essential intermission for children after a day filled

with activities and social interaction. Children can

look at books, engage in one-on-one activities with

classmates, or quietly listen to a story on comfortable

seating options. Ample shelving spaces for interesting

books give children a wide array of stories to choose

from. Pillows and rugs can help soften these spaces and

thoughtful touches like natural objects and household

decorations help create a cozy, organic reading space.

Cultural Contextuality

The early childhood classroom environment is not just the

physical space – it should also be a reflection of the cultural

and social influences of the children that attend. The subjects

of children’s artwork, the personal items they bring in and

objects they identify easiest show the impact and influences

these cultural, familial and environmental relationships have on

them. The holes in the branches of the Reading Tree provide

an opportunity to incorporate these vital notions and influences

into the classroom space, and create unlimited opportunities for

A classroom art space should be both visually

inspiring and practical. Children need enough room

to draw, paint and mold, while also having access

to ample storage space for art supplies needed for

with a variety of materials (such as fresh flowers, found

objects, and a mixture of man-made and natural loose

Children learn best when they invoke all of their senses. They

need opportunities to explore in a hands-on way to fully

understand the lessons being taught. Light tables are a great

way to integrate an enticing sensory experience into classroom

activities. Light tables reinforce a child’s ability to engage in

and interact with the world around them through additional

visual and kinesthetic cues. Items and loose parts with different

opacities, textures, and substances add a further investigative

nature to light tables. The calming glow of the table creates

a unique space to explore light, mass and color theory. When

provided an opportunity to engage in activities using multiple

senses, children are better able to comprehend lessons, practice

new skills and understand abstract concepts.

CLASSROOM ESSENTIALS

Loose parts, art supplies, musical instruments… a classroom

needs plenty of supplies to create an enriching, inspiring

environment. Just as a child’s imagination shouldn’t be limited by

an excess of structured work, the classroom should not be limited

by a lack of organized storage.

In order for a classroom to be truly inspiring it must be filled

with parts and accessories that spark a child’s imagination and

curiosity. Storage options that provide a clear view of what is

inside each bin, low baskets filled with sea glass, buttons and sea

shells and spaces that fill the classroom with the smell of lavender

or thyme all encourage children to explore their classroom and

everything it has to offer.

CLASSROOM ESSENTIALS | PLANT POCKETS

To explore the world of dirt is

exhilirating for young children. They are

fascinated by the feel and smell of dirt,

and equally filled with a sense of wonder

when tiny green sprouts appear from

beneath its surface.”

-- Sandra Duncan, EdD, and Jody Martin

Bringing the Outside In

Bringing the Outside In

The outside world is filled with wonder and excitement, and bringing a

small part of that wonder into the classroom greatly enhances a child’s

ability to learn. Growing an herb garden is a natural addition to an early

childhood classroom that teaches students about plant life, sustainable

ecosystems and personal responsibility. Plant pockets present an

opportunity to create an interactive communal area for children to

work together, learn and even taste the herbs they are nurturing. The

wide, breathable panels allow the soil to aerate naturally while easily

containing the right amount of water to keep plants thriving.
