Uncle Tom Cobley

DOWN UNCLE TOM’S WAY

Funding for the Arts is under threat, leading many commentators to step into

the debate over how much they matter. What good are the Arts? Do they make

us better people? Who decides what is good or bad art?

What is clear though is that great civilisations are not remembered for their

economic successes, but by the art they leave behind. On a personal level,

whether it’s a great book, film, play, painting or piece of music, art can make us

better people as it acts as a mirror. By looking into this mirror, you can see deep

inside of yourself, see what motivates and moves you, see what might need

changing, then use art to help you heal and repair.

If you’re feeling down, great art really can lift your spirits, having the capacity to

excite, motivate, calm, exhilarate, in fact, any human emotion can be accessed

via art. A society without the Arts will be a less civilised, less thoughtful and less

attractive place to live.

The Arts Council has had its budget consistently cut over the past decade,

bringing the value of the Arts into question. One sound economic reason for

reversing this trend is the contribution to trade that the Arts can bring to the

leisure and tourism industries. They can even help to rejuvenate our inner city

areas and to rebuild confidence and self-esteem among the under privileged.

In fact, the Arts delivers a significant return on relatively small levels of

government spending, because while the Arts budget accounts for less than

0.1% of public spending it delivers four times that amount, around £856m of

spending by tourists to the UK. So, the Arts do have value in an economic, as

well as an aesthetic and personal sense. What’s more, the industry provides

over 250,000 jobs.

So, next time you have an opportunity to support the Arts, whether that’s visiting

a gallery, a museum, a theatre or a concert, remember they can enrich as both

personally and economically. That’s all from me, have a great month.

Uncle Tom ©

Are You Man Enough

1 in every 2 men will have a health problem with their prostate at some stage of

their lives. It could be an infection, enlargement or cancer. 1 in every 8 men will

develop prostate cancer and those of African-Caribbean origin and those with a

family history of the disease are 2 to 3 times more at risk.

PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen, it is a simple blood test that measures

the amount of antigen, produced by the prostate, entering the blood. It is not a

direct test for cancer, a moderately raised reading can be an indicator of a prostate

problem, a high reading should trigger further tests to determine if there is a

need for any treatment.

Without screening, around 47,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each

year. It is now the leading cancer found in men. Around 11,800 men die of this

disease annually, one every 45 minutes. Caught in the early stages, cure rates

are dramatically improved with over 80% success. General symptoms of problems

with the prostate are frequent need to urinate especially at night; bursting

to urinate, slow flow, difficult, painful; stop/start and dribbling, or blood in the

urine.

The charity PCaSO (Prostate Cancer Support Organisation) in partnership with

Burgess Hill District Lions are offering FREE PSA testing for men aged between

45 and 80 on 12 th October at the Triangle Leisure Centre, Triangle

Way, Burgess Hill RH15 8WA. We are also testing in East Grinstead on 23 rd

November.
