Polaris Ranger 570 for 2019

Cape Epic Medical Backup

Ahead of the Cape Epic, Smith Power Equipment’s

dealer, Maverick Motorsport, supplied a customised

Polaris Ranger 570 to Mediclinic Southern Africa to

help with medical backup during the most televised

mountain bike race in the world. A day before

the 2019 Absa Cape Epic, the largest full-service

mountain bike stage race in the world, Mediclinic

Southern Africa took delivery of its Polaris Ranger

570 side-by-side from Maverick Motorsport. This

year’s race took place from March 17-24. Leon

Laing, owner of Maverick Motorsport, explains that

as the top Polaris dealer in South Africa over the last

seven years proved its mettle by getting the vehicle

ready with all the modifications the client wanted in

a very short space of time.

Why Polaris Ranger 570? “They purchased this

unit specifically to provide medical backup in

difficult terrain and to evacuate riders who could be

seriously injured during the race,” explains Laing.

The task at hand was no easy feat, and demanded

a rugged solution that could easily traverse the

tough terrain. From the iconic slopes of Table

Mountain’s National Park, to the craggy shoreline

of the Southern Coast, traversing the famous

Winelands and beyond into the high mountains of

the Western Cape, the 2019 Absa Cape Epic route

was no walk in the park. Eight days, 630 km and

16 650 m of climbing – the statistics pretty much

tell the story. Rugged mountain trails, bone jarring

dual tracks and windswept gravel roads, were

some of the conditions riders had to contend with.

The Polaris Ranger 570 was a fitting solution that

could get the better of these challenges, allowing

Mediclinic to supply medical needs and rescuing

injured riders from anywhere along the route. The

unit has been equipped with a docking station for

the stretcher, a jump seat for the assisting medic

and a lockable cabinet for all the medication. “The

unit is All Wheel Drive and fully automatic, and even

a less skilled person can operate it. We have also

equipped it with the necessary emergency lights for

maximum visibility. The client is very happy with the

unit. It has worked extremely well for the purposes it

was bought for,” concludes Laing.

10 Linhai Rustler Quads

for Adventure Zone

After experiencing the ride quality of three pre-owned

Linhai quad bikes it initially bought, Adventure Zone

Cullinan has since standardised its fleet with 10

new Linhai Rustler 260 XL units from local importer,

Smith Power Equipment. A fleet of 10 Linhai Rustlers

260 XL quad bikes is providing adrenaline-stirring

experiences to nature lovers who also happen to

enjoy pulse-racing action and quad safari activities at

Adventure Zone Cullinan. Having previously run three

pre-owned units, owner Hanro Davel was pleased

with the ride quality and the overall performance

of the range so much so that in September 2018,

Adventure Zone Cullinan took delivery of 10 new

Rustler 260 XL units. Adventure Zone Cullinan

now operates a total of 19 quad bikes. “We have

previously run some pre-owned units here and we

were impressed by their overall performance,” says

Davel. “We then decided to standardise our fleet

with 10 new units. Some of the favourable features

include the 260cc, which is not too big for our

clients, as well as the fact that they are automatic

and have such a utility shape,” explains Davel. “The

performance to date has been fantastic. We will run

them for three years before replacing them. Support

from the supplier has also been great thus far.” “The

Rustler 260XL is the perfect entry-level quad bike.

Its lightweight and automatic transmission makes it

easy to use, a blast to ride, yet with racks and hitch,

it is still capable of helping out with the chores. It is

for this reason why the Linhai Rustler 260 XL quad

bike is one of Linhai’s best-sellers the world over,”

concludes Phil Greenall, Smith Power area manager

who facilitated the deal.

When it comes to adventure activities, through its

two beautiful adventure farms with some of the most

breath-taking gorges, cliffs and river systems, the

facility offers diverse venturesome activities. Whether

for individuals, company team building, or adventurehungry

travellers, there is a choice of ziplining across

rocky gorges, the ancient art of archery, abseiling, as

well as quad bike safaris, among other activities. One

of the most prominent activities is quad bike safaris,

allowing visitors to enjoy a 20-km safari adventure

through a game farm from the comfort of the quads.

If one is more of a motorised adventure junkie, they

can enjoy the stunning 8-km utility obstacle course,

including rocky technical terrain, mud, dirt tracks,

water and flat sections to suit entry level riders.

Full feature soon.
