Visitors show a 5% increase

The 2019 show ended with exhibitors

in excellent spirits. The core show

visitors were on a par with previous

years, the good news being that the

actual number of retailers attending

increased, while the number of

delegates per retailer reduced. The

show’s overall attendance rose by

just over 5%, fuelled by a relatively

new breed of visitors to the show, the

influencers and consumer press.

Exclusively 2019 was a quality

show featuring over 150

exhibitors presenting over 275 of

their brands. The feedback from

exhibitors has been positive,

with many commenting on the

quality of visitors to their stands

including new customers, as

well as the increasing numbers

of influencers and bloggers. It

was very pleasing to witness

the show’s Brand Showcase

initiative, now in its 3rd year,

gain considerable momentum,

with attendance more than

double that of 2018. This

initiative, alongside the Trend

Initiatives with Scarlet Opus,

highlights how the content of

the show does need to adapt

and mirror the changing face of

the market,” comments Will Jones,

BHETA Chief Operating Officer and

Exclusively Shows Chairman.

This year’s show was packed with over

150 leading exhibitors including 32

fabulous new exhibitors in housewares,

tabletop and small domestic

appliances offering a myriad of new

products and appealing new brands.

“The show’s unique ‘invited

buyer’ and preshow marketing

have delivered a strong visitor

line-up for exhibitors once

again,” confirmed Simon Boyd.

Uniquely, the show team vet all

potential visitors, carefully inviting

only bona fide buyers to attend. “The

show team are delighted with

the resulting mix and quality of

retailers that attended,” continues

Simon. “The show embraced

many new retailers who are

championing new and evolving

routes to market, alongside

large respected names from the

high street, the grocery sector,

buying groups, e-commerce and

mail order, and, of course, the

hard working and determined

independents.”

The Exclusively Gift Voucher, run in

partnership with Bira, again drew

independents and reaped rewards, as

highlighted by Jeff Moody, Managing

Director, Bira Direct: “This year’s

Exclusively Gift’ initiative brought

over 60 Bira members to the show,

building on the success of last

year. It was great to see so many

of our members at this event and

hear so many positive comments,

not just about the voucher

initiative but the show in general.”

Concluding, Martin de la Fuente of

Ocado, adds: “Exclusively is a

great place for the Ocado team

to get together with so many

key suppliers in one place. It’s a

great use of two days to catch up

on trends, new products and seek

out new suppliers. Exclusively

Housewares and Exclusively

Electrical is one of the most

important dates in our diaries.”

Here’s what

the exhibitors

are saying

“Thermos had a very successful

show; turnout was much higher

than usual, and the team

met with a lot of customers

both old and new! Arguably

one of the best shows we’ve

had in terms of meetings, we

had visits from many of our

national accounts as well as

potential new customers. This

show was the first show where

we were approached by a lot

of bloggers, influencers and

other media gurus. We are

already seeing the effects of

it with people having already

reached out to get in touch

with us.” Nina James, Thermos

“I wanted to take the

opportunity to congratulate

you on an absolutely excellent

show. Well run, well organised,

well presented, enjoyed by

both exhibitors and visitors

alike.” Nick Squire, George East

“Thanks for another great

show! We have received a

couple of leads already from

the showcase which is great

news.” Danielle Marsh, Oxo

Celebrities out in force at Exclusively

A roster of celebrities headed for

the Exclusively Shows - including

TV cook Lorraine Pascale; Jeremy

Pang, founder of the School of Wok;

Edd Kimber and Martha Collinson,

both former contestants on The

Great British Bake Off; and Aggie

McKenzie from How Clean Is Your

House?

“It was great to have Jeremy

around to demonstrate cleaver skills

(seen here with Jo Howard, editor

of Progressive Housewares), and

with ever-increasing interest in the

brand, we knew that his presence

would help build the profile of

School of Wok with the buyers at

the show.”

Ebuehi, also from The Great British

Bake Off and author of Modern

Cakes for the Home Baker, her first

book coming out in November,

and Georgina Hayden, food stylist

and writer and author of Taverna,

were both talking about upcoming

projects with Nordic Ware and

celebrating all things Bundt ® .

Lorraine Pascale came to support

her cookware collaboration with

Haden. As one of the most popular

presenters and authorities on

cooking and eating well, and as

a voice for nutrition and wellness,

Lorraine brings a fresh and exciting

take on products within the small

domestic appliance arena.

Here we see Martha Collison,

Waitrose columnist and author

of Twist and Crave, with Pauline

Clements from Nordic Ware.

Martha grew to fame when she

appeared on The Great British

Bake Off; their youngest ever

contestant, successfully reaching

the quarter finals, she was

talking all things Bundt® with

Nordic Ware.

“Eating well is so important, but

with increasingly busy lifestyles

it is not always possible to make

healthy, nutritionally balanced and

delicious dishes. So, I decided to

collaborate with Haden to create

cooking products that can help you

maintain a healthier lifestyle, but

also allow you to be creative in the

kitchen.” Lorraine Pascale

Bryony Dyer from Dexam talks

about Jeremy Pang at the show:

“Jeremy Pang was using our

School of Wok cleaver on the

stand at Exclusively. Very carefully

sourced by us to meet Jeremy’s

very exacting demands on the

balance, shape and blade but also

with our commercial awareness to

ensure we hit a suitable price point,

these cleavers are used daily at the

School of Wok school in Covent

Garden for all the cookery lessons.

Jeremy Pang reiterates: “Exclusively

Housewares 2019 was an absolute

pleasure to work with. I knew

the show would be great, but the

quality of all products, exhibitors

and visitors along with the press

at the show far exceeded my

expectations. As always, I got a

real kick out of entertaining the

crowd with my cleaver skills on the

Dexam International stand and

would like to thank both Dexam

and Exclusively for showcasing the

School of Wok cookware range so

perfectly. I can’t wait for next year!”

Edd Kimber, winner of the first

series of The Great British Bake Off,

author, food writer and columnist,

was talking about ongoing projects

with Nordic Ware. Benjamina

Aggie McKenzie adds:

Exclusively Housewares is a

calendar fixture for me each

year. I’d hate to miss it, and this

year’s show was better than ever

- packed with great new ideas

I want to write about.”

Exclusively Gift

2019 saw the Exclusively Shows once again working

with the British Independent Retailers Association

(Bira), with the Free £100 Exclusively Gift Voucher

which ensured that a visit to the show is both

productive and cost-effective.

Exclusively Gift Vouchers were sent to Bira Direct

members operating in the housewares, SDA, gift and

lifestyle sectors who had registered in advance to

attend the show. They simply had to spend £300 net

of VAT with one supplier to redeem their voucher.

Jeff Moody, MD of Bira, confirms its success:

“This year’s ‘Exclusively Gift’ initiative

brought over 60 Bira members to the show,

building on the success of last year. It was

great to see so many of our members at this

event and hear so many positive comments,

not just about the voucher initiative but the

show in general. One of our independent

retailers hadn’t attended a trade show for

many years but was really glad he had made

the effort to travel down from Scotland.”

Exclusively Shows were delighted that Charles Banks

from thefoodpeople accepted the invitation to present

a food trend talk each day at the show and have a

presence at the show to answer visitor and exhibitor’s

questions.

thefoodpeople shared the most relevant food and

drink future trends which will have an impact on

every visitor and exhibitor attending the show over the

course of the next 2 years.

Charles Banks adds: “The problem for business

today is that food moves fast, very fast, and often the

consumer is moving faster still. So, understanding

what the next vegan, the next street food or the next

Korean is, is critical for business. At thefoodpeople,

we combine specialist global understanding of

consumer trends and behaviours with our expertise

and passion in food and drink to define the future

horizon in the sector.”

Each year, thefoodpeople release their rolling 2-year

future food and drink trend forecast to define the

social and cultural forces impacting food and drink,

the food and drink mega trends themselves and the

plethora of trend manifestations that sit beneath

them. From retail to food service, from cuisines to

ingredients and cooking methods to preparation

techniques, the 2-year food and drink future forecast

will help your business align your buying, promotions,

events and merchandising with the trends of

tomorrow.

Trend Talks & Tours

Programme draws

large audiences on

both days

The show-sponsored seminar was extremely well

received, attracting large audiences, with record

numbers attending. In addition, the show offered four

Trend Tours that were fully booked.

Charity donations

support the

grassroot charities

Progressive Housewares and the Exclusively shows

were delighted that this year’s donations were

donated to In Kind Direct.

Chris Morling, business development manager at

In Kind Direct, said the donations “will make an

enormous difference to our charities.”

In Kind Direct distributes new consumer products

donated by leading retailers and manufacturers,

including Amazon and Meyer Group, to a fastgrowing

network of local, grassroots charitable

organisations. Charities can use products to run

their activities or give them to their beneficiaries. In

Kind Direct tracks all donations, ensuring products

are put to good use, and reports back to companies

on the impact made.

Chris reports on the shows: “Not only did we get

some great products that we can distribute to our

charities, we met some really interesting companies

that we can hopefully build partnerships with in

the future.”

There were two speakers, from Scarlet Opus and

thefoodpeople.

Scarlet Opus talked through four key trends: Game

Changer, Satori, Fellowship and The Traveller, which

will influence interiors over the next 18–24 months.

An understanding of trends provide insights into

what consumers will want to buy next. Applying this

knowledge to buying decisions, de-risks buying.

Furthermore interpreting and incorporating trends

when merchandising will also encourage sales.

thefoodpeople shared the most relevant future food

and drink future trends which will have an impact on

every visitor and exhibitor attending the show over the

course of the next 2 years.

The Trend Tours run by Scarlet Opus took visitors on

a circuit of the show and highlighted six exhibitors that

were of special interest for the four trends of 2020.

“The established reputation of the seminar

programme led us, for the first time, to offer

talks on both days, and we were delighted

that overall the audiences showed significant

growth. Also, it was really good to see, in a

turnaround from 2018, a huge increase in the

demand for our Trend Tours led by Scarlet

Opus.” Will Jones, Chairman, Exclusively Shows

If you have a subject you would like to be

covered in the 2020 Trend Talk programme,

please get in touch with the show organisers.

In Kind Direct, Progressive Housewares and the

Exclusively Shows send a heartfelt thanks to all the

companies that donated products, which include:

Interior Trends

worth knowing about

The comprehensive 2020 trend display translated by trend forecasters Scarlet

Opus, a show initiative, was once again a talking point and must-see element

of the show for many.

Scarlet Opus is an international trend forecasting agency. Their experts predict

the colours, materials, textures, patterns and styes which will influence us

all in the next 18 months to 2 years. Their advice is invaluable to designers,

manufacturers and retailers seeking to ensure their products are ‘on trend’ with

consumer aspirations.

Complementing the trend display

were the four fully booked Trend Tours

- taken up by several independents,

major retailers and journalists.

SATORI

A Japanese word that refers to the

experience of seeing into one’s

true nature. This trend encourages

consumers to find a natural rhythm

and balance in their lifestyles in

order to cope with the complexities

of modern life and the distractions

of the online world. During the

Summer of 2020, the Tokyo

Olympics will focus attention on

Japanese arts, crafts, design and

food. Japanese traditions can teach

us so much about slowing down,

exercising restraint and living in the

moment.

Phil Pond adds a comment about his time with Exclusively:

“In 2019, the trend-inspired features included a seminar each

day, a Trend Hub Showcase (of 83 exhibitor products) displayed to

inspire experiential merchandising, a mock shop window in the style

of Christmas 2019 and an exclusive Trend Tour of just six selected

exhibitor stands for groups of visitors.

“In 2019, more than 500 visitors came to see the trend features, including

teams from several of the country’s biggest housewares & SDA retailers,

journalists from the best-known consumer blogs/magazines/papers and

online publications, and a myriad of independent retailers.

“In 2019, 11 visitors spent more than an hour taking in the Trend Hub Showcase,

and less than a handful of visitors spent less than 15 minutes with us.

Exclusively is a stylish, fun, welcoming, positive and informative event at

which manufacturers, retailers, the press and supporters of the industry

meet, each playing their part in making the industry stronger and more

prosperous for all.

“We are very proud to be a part of this show’s phenomenal progress.”

THE GAME

CHANGER

Scarlet Opus brought together

a trend display of exhibitors’

products plus materials and

product samples from makers

around the world that have reused

waste materials and recycled

materials in their work. These are

products that address pollution

and have an ecological agenda,

something that is essential

as consumers become more

concerned about environmental

damage and climate change, and

their awareness grows regarding

how their individual choices,

purchases and actions can have a

positive or negative impact.

THE

TRAVELLER

The overall style takes its aesthetic

cues from a mature luxuriousness,

an understated glamour, with

products that are controlled,

sophisticated, robust, made to

last, precisely crafted and pristine

– demonstrations perhaps of our

attempts to bring order, stability

and control into our lives at a time

of great instability and disorder

in the world. Dark woods, dark

exquisite glassware, statement

The Brand Showcase, now in its 3rd year, is

managed by Richard Watts, who describes

the initiative as a dedicated space to promote

exhibitors’ products to the UK’s consumer

press and UK media influencers. This year saw

an increase not only in the Brand Showcase

participants, but most importantly in press

attendance. The shows are delighted to

announce that the Brand Showcase is growing

from strength to strength and the attendance

was more than double that of 2018.

Richard adds: “From our Monday night

press preview up until doors closing on

the Wednesday, the Brand Showcase

was buzzing. We welcomed more

members of the media to the show

than ever before. Now established as

a must-attend event for lifestyle press,

exhibitors particularly welcomed the

huge increase of influencers attending

the show, due to the instant engagement

this generated for them across social

media. Brands have seen an increase

in followers, consumer reach and

ultimately product sales, thanks to

recommendations from some of the

biggest UK influencers relevant to

our industry.”

The Brand Showcase is fundamentally an edit

of the main show itself. Journalists are invited

to see event highlights in one space quickly

and effectively – without having to take too

much time out of their day. It is proving to be

a successful formula. Enthused by what they

see, the press search out exhibitors in the

main hall.

Not only have we seen an increase in media

committing to attend the event, but also the

number of exhibitors. The show confirms that

bookings have increased by over 50%.

The 2019 Brand Showcase Exhibitors

were: Addis, AEG, AirCraft Vacuums,

Amefa, Auteur, Barista, Black +

Blum, Blue Canyon, Burton McCall,

Denby, Doulton Water Filters, Dualit,

Eddingtons, Evo Lifestyle, FKA Brands,

Forma House, Haus Marketing and

Tradestock and Tramontina.

A few highlights

• 50% more exhibitors participating

• 200% more media visitors

• Over 200 attendees from 118 media

outlets including print, TV,

online and social influencers

Most importantly, it’s an initiative that appeals

to our exhibitors, as expressed by Tony Golby

of George East: “Business has changed

dramatically in recent times. Who would

have thought 10 years ago that we

would have been just as excited about

meeting a blogger as we were making

contact with a department store chain

or a cookshop group then?”

“I’ve had four or five influencers get in

touch as a result of the show which is

fantastic!”

Juliet Coleman, simplehuman

And Paul Shelley at Haus concludes:

“In addition, we were blown away with

the media attention gained from the

Brand Showcase where we were able

to further display products and expose

the exciting new features of some of

our brands.”

And from the press

influencers:

Will Jones, Chairman

of Exclusively Shows

and BHETA’s Chief

Operating Officer,

adds: “The Brand

Showcase offers

exhibitors an excellent

opportunity to position

their products in front

of press, influencers

and bloggers. The

result is that the

message very quickly

finds it way directly to

the key target audience,

i.e. the consumer, via

social media channels

and print.”

Finally, Richard Watts

added: “We can

attribute the growth

of the showcase

to its growing

reputation within

the lifestyle media

sector, the unique

format we offer

and the incredible

list of quality

exhibitors signing

up to be a part of

the event, which

is now considered

the UK’s premier

press showcase of

housewares, tabletop

and small domestic

appliance brands.”

Last but not least

Will Jones,

chairman of

Exclusively

Shows and

BHETA Chief

Operating

Officer:

“The feedback from exhibitors to this

year’s show has been very positive. The

overall quality and buyer representation

from all the main retail sectors has

exceeded our expectations. We’d

also like to thank the positivity of our

exhibitors, the retailers and press

for turning out in their droves and

exceeding our expectations and our

key sponsors EKO, Doulton Water,

Brabantia, Soda Steam and Progressive

Housewares.”

“I’d also like to thank you for the warm

welcome you gave to new staff members

and thank you to the team, for

putting on another fantastic

show!” continues Will Jones.

Simon Boyd, Operations Director,

adds: “The show team are delighted

with the mix and quality of retailers

that attended, which was on a par with

2018, but we can confirm represented

an increase in the number of outlets.

The show embraced many new retailers

who are championing new and

evolving routes to market, alongside

large respected high street names

and, of course, our hard working and

determined independents, embracing

change from all corners of the UK.”
