KATY ISD OPENS BUS DRIVING PARENTS PROGRAM
With a nationwide shortage of bus drivers, the demand for field trip
drivers is at an all-time high. To combat this problem, Katy Independent
School District is inviting parents, grandparents and guardians of District
students to apply to become a BDP - Bus Driving Parent.
“Whether you’re saving for your child’s college fund, looking to
supplement your income or just want to play a crucial part in our Katy
ISD community, this is your opportunity,” said Executive Director of Katy
ISD Transportation Department Dr. Bill Wood. “Best of all you choose
when you work,” added Wood.

Bus Driving Parents will have the opportunity to further their role
in their student’s education and drive their student’s school on field
trips. BDP’s will be vetted and trained through Katy ISD, as well as
be compensated for the time they drive. Once they’ve earned their
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), completed training and earned
driving hours, BDP’s will be able to drive students to field trips as
often as they want. While the training upfront can take time, Bus
Driving Parents will help to provide an incredible service to the
district and expand learning experiences for students. To apply and

TWENTY-FOUR KATY ISD SCHOOLS EARN
TEXAS HONOR ROLL DISTINCTION
What better way for Katy Independent School District to end the
2018-19 school year! Out of its 65 campuses, Katy ISD is proud to
announce that 24 of its schools were named a Texas Honor Roll
School by the Educational Results Partnership (ERP).
The 2018-19 Texas Honor Roll includes:
Elementary: Alexander, Creech, Griffin, Holland, Kilpatrick,
Randolph, Shafer, Stanley, Williams, Wilson and Wolman.
Junior High: Beck, Beckendorff, Katy, McMeans, Memorial Parkway,
Seven Lakes, Tays and WoodCreek.
High School: Cinco Ranch, Mayde Creek, Seven Lakes, Taylor and
Tompkins.
After an extensive analysis of student data, ERP found that these Katy
ISD schools were clear leaders in getting students to grade level and
beyond. The 2018-19 Texas Honor Roll recognizes public elementary,
middle and high schools that consistently demonstrate high levels of
student academic achievement, improvement in student outcomes
over time and a closing of the achievement gaps. For high schools,
the Texas Honor Roll recognition includes measures of college
readiness. This year, the program recognized 855 higher performing
schools across the state. These schools become an accepted
example to other school districts seeking to learn and replicate the
best practices employed at these campuses. Katy ISD schools will be
provided with a banner to display at their campus.

When Is Tax Free Weekend?
The 2019 Tax Free Days vary by state, each state sets its own dates as well
as the items that are available to purchase tax free. Most categories also
have a limit of value per item purchased which is something you should
be aware of before shopping. The tax free weekend for Texas is August
9 th -11 th .

IT’S SCHOOL TIME AGAIN!
You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is
over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school
because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends and maybe even
a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little
while. Let’s find out more about going back to school.
Most teachers kick off the school year by introducing themselves and
talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give
students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the
class. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over
classroom rules so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Pay close
attention so you’ll know if you need to raise your hand to ask a question
and what the rules are about visiting the restroom.
You might already know a lot of kids in your classes on the first day.
But it’s a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you
know and new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be
glad you did and so will your new friend! Sixth grade often signals a move
to middle school or junior high, where you’ll find lockers and maybe a
homeroom. This is just what it sounds like a classroom you’ll go to each
morning, kind of like your home in the school. In middle school, you
might move from classroom to classroom for each subject. Your teachers
know that this is a big change from elementary school and will help you
adjust. Most teachers let you pick your own seat on the first day, but by
the second or third morning, they’ll have mapped out a seating plan.
At first, it’s a good idea to write down where your seat is in your notebook
so you don’t forget. Seeing friends you haven’t seen in a while can
make the first day a good one. You also can make the day feel special
by wearing an outfit you like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on vacation
or your new sneakers put a spring in your step. If you wear a uniform,
you might wear a favorite watch, a new hair band or a piece of jewelry
to show your personal style. It can make you feel good to be prepared
and have all the supplies you need. Some schools distribute supply lists
before the year begins, so you can come stocked up on pencils, folders
and whatever else you’ll be needing. Once you’ve covered the basics,
you might tuck an extra few dollars in your backpack for an emergency
(like forgetting your lunch money). Or maybe you’d like to bring along a
book or magazine to read while you’re on the bus. Whatever you put in
your backpack, make sure you pack it the night before. This prevents the
morning panic when you can’t find your homework or lunch box.
Speaking of lunch, that’s something else that can help you feel good at school
whether it’s the first day or the 100 th day. Help your parents pack it the night
before if you don’t like what’s on the menu at the cafeteria. Try to include a
variety of foods in your packed lunch, especially fruits and vegetables.
The first day of school is your first chance to find your way around a new
school or learn the pathways to new classes in your old school. It’s a lot to
learn in one day, so don’t be surprised if you need a reminder or two. It might
help to write a few notes to yourself, so you’ll remember the important stuff,
like your locker combination and that lunch starts at 11:43 AM, not 12:10
PM. Before you know it, your fingers will fly as you open your locker and you
won’t have to check your notes to know what time lunch starts! What if you
hate school by the end of day one? Teachers recommend giving things some
time to sort themselves out once you know your way around the building
and get adjusted to the new routine, you’ll probably feel better. If those
feelings don’t fade, talk to your mom, dad, teacher or school counselor.

Here are a few final tips for a fantastic school year:
• Get enough sleep.
• Eat a healthy breakfast.
• Try your best.
• Use good work habits, like writing down your assignments and turning
in your homework on time.
• Take your time with school work. If you don’t understand something,
ask the teacher.
• Keep a sense of humor. One teacher we know shows his new students
a picture of himself graduating high school a grinning ape in a red
graduation cap and gown. This usually makes the kids laugh and it’s
a good way to remind them that school is fun! Questions or feedback

As summer draws to a close and children start heading back to school,
family life can get pretty hectic. It’s important to remember - and share
with your children - some key tips that will help keep them safe and
healthy throughout the school year.
Getting to School
Whether children walk, ride their bicycle or take the bus to school, it is
vitally important that they and the motorists around them - take proper
safety precautions.
Walkers
Walk on the sidewalk; if there is no sidewalk and you must walk in the
street, walk facing traffic
Before crossing the street, stop and look left, right and left again to see
if cars are coming
Never dart out in front of a parked car
Parents: Practice walking to school with your child, crossing streets at
crosswalks when available
Never walk while texting or talking on the phone
Do not walk while using headphones

EAGLE SCOUT AWARD PRESENTED
Russell Leach of Katy has earned the Boy Scouts of America’s highest
advancement award, the Eagle Scout Award and was recognized in
a ceremony on May 5, 2019. A member of Memorial Lutheran Church
Troop 73, Russell is one of only 6 percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the
Eagle rank. Each candidate must earn 21 merit badges and successfully
complete a community, church or synagogue-related service project to
earn his Eagle; Russell chose to build orchestra cases for the International
Leadership School of Katy. During Russell’s journey, he also achieved a
Gold Palm by completing an additional 10 merit badges in addition to
the 21 required to Eagle. Troop 73 is proud of Russell’s accomplishments.
SCOUT TROOP 73 CELEBRATES 25 YEARS
Scout Troop 73 celebrated their 25 th anniversary on June 3 rd with their
Chartered Organization, Memorial Lutheran Church in Katy, TX. Scoutmaster
Paul Stirrup presented handmade appreciation gifts to Reverend John
Davis and the Troop’s Charter Representative, Glenn Hansen. Troop 73
was founded in 1994 with 9 Scouts. Currently, Troop 73 has over 65 Scouts
working on character development and learning how to leave a positive
impact in their community. The Troop has produced more than 60 Eagle
Scouts throughout the past 25 years. Their Eagle scouts have worked
on numerous projects over the years to leave a legacy in Katy. Troop 73
has had 5 Scoutmasters since forming. The first leader was Neal Cooper,
followed by Dan Welsh, Paul Hattermann, Ricky Nietsche and the current
leader Paul Stirrup. Troop 73 looks forward to the next 25 years.

2 cups ginger ale, chilled
2 cups orange soda, chilled
1/2 cup milk
4 scoops orange sherbet
4 scoops vanilla ice cream

INGREDIENTS:
2 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
1/2 cup milk
3/4 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons unsweetened dark cocoa powder
1 ounce high-quality dark chocolate (85%), finely chopped
5 egg yolks
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, plus more for dusting
DIRECTIONS:
Whisk cream, milk, sugar and cocoa powder in a saucepan over
medium heat until the mixture is thoroughly combined and the sugar
has dissolved. Bring almost to a simmer and stir in dark chocolate
until melted. Whisk egg yolks into the cream mixture and cook until
batter is slightly thickened, 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer to a container,
cover and refrigerate until chilled, at least 6 hours.
Stir cinnamon into chilled custard batter and freeze in an ice cream
machine following manufacturer’s instructions. Sprinkle frozen
custard with more cinnamon to serve.

For August
• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects.
• Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves
and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of
iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates.
• Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little
bone meal around the roots.
• Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall
growth.
• Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies.
• Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have
areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t
brought under control. There is a new generation going
now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban
to stop the damage.
• Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine
grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a
fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing
while it puts down roots. You will need to water the
new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also
creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun
can dry the turf.
• Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up,
add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for
a month or so. Add in any amendments like micronutrients.
Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms
have a favorable environment.
