E D I T O R ‘ S N O T E
Workers in
renewable
energy are
exposed to the
risks, such as falls, fires,
electrical current, confined
space hazards, etc. Based on
the records of Bureau of Labor
statistics, 5 among 10 workers
in the solar, wind, geothermal
and biomass electric power
generation industries died in
the workplace each day over
the 2012-2016 periods.
Four out of the 5 fatal injuries
were caused by falls, while the
other was attributed to a motor
vehicle accident. “One of the
biggest challenges with these
industries is their location,”
said Ilana Morady, a San
Francisco-based associate at
Seyfarth Shaw L.L.P.
Forms of Energy Generation
that can cause Danger
All forms of energy generation
carry some danger, or at the
very least unexpected
inconvenience in a natural
disaster. Several forms that
can cause life as it risks are
the following:
1. Hydroelectric dams can
flood in heavy downpours.
2. Transformers may burst
into flame from lightning
strikes.
3. Coal can freeze when
temperatures drop, making
it difficult to transport or burn
and natural gas may combust
under various conditions.
Energy Generation:
Life is Not Renewable
Life, once taken away, is not renewable unlike energy.
The high and increasing fatalities in renewable energy
sectors posed an alarming threat to life of workers, as
well as the industry.
4. Wind turbines are often
located in really remote areas,
medical and first aid can be a
challenge.
Safety Precautions in
Working in Energy
Generation Places
There are issues when
someone is injured making
sure that first aid is available
and that emergency
responders can access the
site and get there quickly. This
unique safety issue regarding
the renewable energy sector
should be strictly monitored by
occupational safety and health
officer.
To combat the unwanted
accidents, there should be a
special rules and mandate that
will eliminate the possibilities
of danger. A simple wearing of
Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE) would not be appropriate
to this unique kind of risk.
A series of assessments and
researches must be done and
be incorporated in planning of
the new sets of rules.
Increased citizen involvement
and understanding is more
important now than ever
before. Develop the plans
together with the citizens
and they will say yes to many
things.
Renewable energy usage is
soaring quickly on a global
scale, slowly combating the
adverse effects of
unsustainable energy and
buttressing against the speedy
rise of climate change. Wind,
solar energy, hydropower,
geothermal, and biomass are
the most common types of
naturally-replenishing,
theoretically infinite sources
of renewable energy.
While this steadily growing
trend is grounds for hope for
the planet, the population
working in renewable
energy faces a number of perils
unique to this ever-growing
industry. Compared to urban
offices, the novelty of working
in renewable resources may
exacerbate these hazards.
One of the more perilous fields
under renewable resources is
wind. Installed all across the
nation, wind turbines are as
intimidating as they are lofty,
and green jobbers working in
wind ought to exercise
extreme caution when atop
these mills.
Labelled as a high-risk job for
most, the majority of fatalities
in this field revolve around pre-
8

9

C O V E R S T O R Y
carious falls, electrical burns,
and crushing injuries, among
other causes by the
Occupational Safety and
Health Administration. These
incidents have befallen
linemen, electricians, and
countless others.
Global Wind Organization
(GWO) chairman Claus Rose
noted that electrical incidents
happen when handling high to
low-voltage equipment,
resulting in electrocution and
explosions.
Rose also shed light upon
things that “people don’t
realize are problems,” until
it’s too late, such as
carrying heavy equipment
in unfavorable locations that
are cramped and congested.
Stumbling, tripping, and
colliding into various other
equipment is not uncommon
for one working in wine. During
turbine installation, most
especially, one must always be
vigilant of their surroundings
and take rests when
necessary, avoiding fatigue as
much as possible. The amount
10

C O V E R S T O R Y
of lifting large pieces of
equipment alone differentiates
wind from oil and gas, and
other energy and resource
industries.
Being careless when handling
and lifting equipment paves
multiple ways for related
injuries. Inexperienced
workers with poor levels of
concentration and proper
handling suffer from physical
traumas that, when ignored,
could worsen at an
unprecedented rate.
In contrast, height, which is
perceived as a major risk
factor by the public, is very
much controlled. “Sometimes
there is an assumption that
just because it is very high up
in the air it must, by default,
be a major risk area. It isn’t,
because we have a very good
idea of how to control it, the
safety systems involved are
quite well developed, and we
have well-equipped turbines.”
Rose says.
It should then come as no
surprise that safety experts are
already gearing up to find the
best solutions for crisis
mitigation in these work sites.
After all, the safety of
renewable resource
workers should always be the
top priority. It is, according to
Andy Holt, the Head of Global
Projects and Services at GE
Renewable Energy, a concern
shared amongst all green
jobbers in renewable
resources. Protecting the
12

14

professionals in the industry is
an interest shared amongst all
players within the arena.
Rose states that better
safety protocols are being
researched and implemented
by original equipment
manufacturers worldwide.
Safety,
protection, and accountability
are becoming a harder
cornerstone for the OEM’s
commercial strategies and
communication plans, all the
while following through with
their promise to improve upon
their own safety measures.
With these plans to prevent
incidents and crises currently
at play, professionals in the
renewable energy resource will
finally have their second wind.
Proliferating this culture of
security in the industry is
founded on sharpness of mind
and sound mentality. While
working in the renewable
resource industry is noble in
and of itself, Holt is reminding
all renewable resource recruits
to prioritize their own physical
and mental well-beings before
the planet’s, because there will
always be an Earth to be taken
care of.
Part of creating this culture of
safety is, surprisingly, the
reduction of house and work
site rules. According to Rose,
an overabundance in house
rules is indicative of poor
management from the
higher-ups and the workers
must instead focus on
improving individual and
collective risk awareness.
Green jobbers must
pre-emptively take steps to
clear paths, check up on risk
factors, minimize potential
threats, and ensure a safe
environment before the actual
work begins. Rules and
regulations will still be
present in extremely
precarious positions and
locations in the industry.
As wind farms move further
and further away from
populaces and urban
areas, the need for proper risk
awareness campaigns and
management, crisis mitigation,
and more streamlined training
regimen and lectures, as well
as basic training in complementary
skills such as first aid
and medical proficiencies, for
prospects looking into wind
and the renewable resource
industry.
On-site safety is a target that
is ever in motion because no
matter how much devising
entire industries do, there will
always be unforeseen threats
and accidents. Despite the
fact that surprises lurk around
every little corner, anticipating
high-risk events and devising
strategies and concrete plans
of mitigating threats will impact
the industry in a grand way.
New Survey Reveals 70% of Americans Support
Nationwide Solar Panel Mandate on New Homes
As we approach the
longest day of the
year, a new survey
reveals American
adults are eager to harness the
sun’s energy, with 70 percent
saying they would support a
nationwide mandate requiring
solar panels to be installed
on all newly built homes. The
survey,* conducted by CITE
Research on behalf of Vivint
Solar (NYSE: VSLR), a leading
full-service residential solar
provider, also revealed significant
others and environmental
experts are the most influential
when deciding to install residential
solar for the good of the
environment, while politicians
are the least influential by far.
“California was the first state
to pass a solar panel mandate
on new homes and it goes
into effect in 2020. We’ve seen
that state often lead the way
in establishing environmental
practices nationwide,” said
David Bywater, CEO of Vivint
Solar, which has installed solar
energy systems on more than
160,000 U.S. homes. “We
believe more states will make
strides to adopt residential
solar requirements, and it’s
great to see the vast majority of
American adults support this,
even at a nationwide mandate
level. With nearly a million
new single-family homes built
annually, if all of them took
advantage of solar energy, it
would be equivalent to driving
12 billion fewer miles a year
or consuming 12 million fewer
barrels of oil.”**
Among those who support
a nationwide solar mandate,
32% said they strongly support
it and 38% said they somewhat
support it, while approximately
16% said they somewhat
oppose it and 14% said they
strongly oppose it. While there
was no significant difference
26

in attitudes between men and
women, opinions varied based
on region, age group,
homeowner and relationship
status varied. Results showed:
• Support for the measure is
highest among younger adults
and decreases with age. The
most supportive group is those
aged 25-34, with 74% in favor
of it. This is followed by adults
35-44 (73%), 45-54 (71%),
55-64 (66%) and 65+ at 61%
in favor.
• While support was strong
across the country, those in
the West were the most
supportive with 72% in favor.
This was closely followed by
71% in the Northeast, 68%
in the South and 67% in the
Midwest.
• When it comes to
homeownership, 71% of
non-homeowners support a
nationwide solar mandate, with
36% saying they strongly
support it. Among
homeowners, 68% of them are
supportive, with 29% saying
they strongly support it.
• Relationship-wise, single
survey takers showed more
support for the solar mandate,
with 73% of them in favor,
compared to 68% of survey
takers who are married or
living with a partner.
As residential solar is currently
optional for existing
homeowners, survey takers
were also asked who would
most influence their decision
to install solar panels on their
28

home for the good of the
environment. Spouses/
significant others proved the
most powerful force, with 58%
of survey takers claiming they
would be influenced by them
(36% a great deal of influence,
and 22% some influence). Environmental
experts were the
next most influential, with 57%
saying they would be
influenced by their opinion
(28% a great deal of influence,
29% some influence).
Politicians are the least
influential, with just 19% of
people saying a political figure
would influence their opinion
to go solar for the environmental
benefits (6% a great deal of
influence, 13% some
influence). And while
politicians don’t rank highly
overall, data shows the older
you get, the less likely you
are to be influenced by them.
Among survey takers, the
percentage who say politicians
have no influence: 46% for
those aged 25-34; 49% age
35-44; 59% age 45-54; 64%
age 55-64, and 73% of those
aged 65+. Comparatively, 29%
of those 25-44 claimed politicians
would have some or a
great deal of influence, while
only 7% of those 65+ stated
the same.
Other solar decision
influencers include friends
(45% influenced by them),
children (36%), other family
members (36%) and parents
(34%). Specific to children, the
influence is greatest when they
live in the home, where 22% of
survey takers say their children
have a great deal of influence,
and 29% say they have some
influence.
While partners had the most
influence, whether or not the
couple is married makes a
difference. Seventy fivepercent
of people who are
married or living together are
influenced by their partner.
However, married couples are
more strongly influenced by
their partner, with 51% stating
their spouse had a great deal
of influence. This is compared
to unmarried partners living
together, with just 45% saying
their partner had a great deal
of influence.
MIDDLE EAST NEWS
With proven technological track record, LG Electronics to
lead the smart energy industry with its total HVAC solution
LG Electronics targets tropical regions such as Middle East & Africa (MEA) with its unique smart energy
solutions that offer high efficiency
June 30, 2019 (Dubai, UAE) – As
a leader in the HVAC industry,
LG Electronics is strengthening
its foothold as a pioneering provider
of smart energy solutions
in the Middle East & African
(MEA) market.
According to Mordor
Intelligence, a global market
research company, the energy
management system market in
the MEA region is expected to
grow at an annual rate of 11.87%
to reach USD 3.76 billion by
2021 . As such, continuous
research and development of
efficient energy management
policy is undergoing in
government and international
organization-scale in the MEA
region.
In particular, members of the
Gulf Cooperation Council are
increasing investment in energy
infrastructure by utilizing smart
grid, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and
Saudi Arabia have all announced
energy policies up until 2030 to
maximize energy efficiency.
Africa is not an exception.
According to the International
Renewable Energy Agency,
energy demand in Africa is
expected to increase 2 fold by
2030 , while United Nations
Environment Program analyzed
that in regions like Africa where
32
energy access is restricted,
efficient energy management is
significant in times where
demand skyrockets.
In tropical climates like the MEA,
where temperature goes high as
50°C, the key to smart energy
management is in heating,
ventilation, and air conditioning
(HVAC) solutions.
Representatively in Saudi Arabia,
70% of energy consumption is
used in cooling compared to 48%
in Europe.
To tackle such needs, LG Air
Solution provides highly efficient
HVAC solutions. LG’s
representative line for its HVAC
solution is the VRF system,
MULTI V, is equipped with
ever powerful and reliable LG’s
ultimate inverter compressors,
which are vital to the efficiency
of a VRF. LG inverter technol-

ogy offers maximum efficiency
in part load as well as full load
conditions with a large range
of frequency operation, and an
enhanced compressor reliability.
Numerous MULTI Vs are
currently successfully under
operation in diverse sites in the
MEA region.
One exemplary site is MEA’s first
net zero energy city, the
Sustainable City by Diamond
Developers. Requiring a
highly efficient HVAC solution,
especially needing a part load
operation and controlling and
monitoring the AC units from
a smartphone, all the challenges
were met by LG and the City is
now enjoying the best energy
efficiency.
LG also provides smart energy
management with its BECON
(Building Energy Control) Cloud
Solution, an IoT-based platform.
Through numerous sensors in the
BECON Cloud, remote real-time
monitoring, energy efficiency
management, and energy saving
is possible. Maintenance service
teams are also set up in the MEA
region with a strong basis in
Dubai, UAE and several sites in
the region have adapted BECON
Cloud and are receiving remote
maintenance service.
Expanding into the smart energy
business with its technologies in
HVAC solution, LG’s
capabilities have been
demonstrated in Korea’s LG
Science Park, a world class R&D
complex with an area of around
175,207m2. Not only the most
up-to-date HVAC system has
been adapted, but the innovative
energy solution for energy
management and renewable
energy facilities have been
realized.
For instance, simulation for
energy use based on information
on weather, building facility data,
operating history, etc. is held
to predict energy demand with
BECON solutions and manage
energy supply and demand.
Review and analysis of energy
production, saving, and load is
also undergone through renewable
energy facilities for smart
energy management. With these
advanced technical capabilities
realized in LG Science Park, LG
will move on to globally expand
its technological leadership in
smart energy management.
Mr. James Lee, President of LG
Electronics Middle East and
Africa said, “Starting from 2020,
the MEA region is welcoming
key momenta with numerous
international events and
government-led construction
projects that can lead to high
demand in energy solutions.
With LG’s smart energy
solutions that can maximize
energy efficiency, we will
contribute to the changeover of
MEA cities to become
intelligent.”

About Lincoln Foundation,
Lincoln Institute of Land
Policy, and Lincoln Welding
School
The J.F.Lincoln Foundation is a
non-profit, welding education
organization founded in 1936
to promote welding as a better
method of joining metals and
to promote welding as a career
choice. It is the only
organization in the United States
solely dedicated to educating the
public about the art and science
of arc welding. Formed when the
arc welding industry was in its
infancy, the Foundation is now in
its seventh decade of publishing
educational texts and granting
cash awards to recognize
technical achievements.
The Lincoln Institute of Land
Policy was established by
Lincoln Electric’s founder, John
C. Lincoln, in 1946, based on
his admiration for the work of
Henry George. Today, the think
tank still focuses on promoting
“creative approaches to land as a
solution to economic, social, and
environmental challenges.”
The Lincoln Electric Welding
School was set up in 1917, and
has since then instructed over
150,000 men and women [6] in
the various methods and
techniques of safety and arc
welding processes. The school is
listed by the Ohio State Board of
School and College Registration.
Why Elite Families in the
Philippines Choose TOSOT
U-Crown Split Type Aircon
These elite families deserve nothing but the best, and this TOSOT
split-type aircon is nothing short of perfect.
décors fit perfectly in the traditional
pre-Colonial mansions
and have been well-thought-of
even for the smallest trinkets
that are made of either silver or
gold. Some elite men even house
cars as many as a hundred in
their well-maintained garages.
And not to mention how grand
parties are in these posh “little”
mansions. Anyone who’s anyone
is definitely on the guest list!
Crazy Rich Asians, a
2018 film showcasing
the luxe life (and love
life) of crazy rich Asian
people, particularly some Chinese
families. Apparently, there is
quite a handful of real-life “crazy
rich” families in the Philippines
as well. Despite its being a thirdworld
country, one can never
doubt the fact that it is home to
dozens of known names in the
society that are living the high
life. Prominent names such as the
Marcoses, Ayalas, Lopezes, Roxases,
Tecsons, Tuasons, Yuchengcos,
and Tans among others have
graced the streets of Manila since
the 1800s. They were definitely
the ‘it’ crowd and the epitome of
elegance and luxury spending.
From traveling abroad monthly
to spending an easy 10 million
for a child’s birthday party, these
Filipino elites sure know how to
celebrate their financial success.
They need not boast of their
hefty wealth since it is always
evident in their myriad of extravagant
properties, especially their
homes, which are in fact taken
care of by at least a dozen pack of
househelps. Many of these homes
were adorned with exquisite
wood furniture (made exclusively
by famous craftsmen) and a few
fabulous classic paintings by the
likes of Amorsolo and Hidalgo.
Of course, these luxurious home
TOSOT U-Crown Split Type
Aircon Premium Features
As expected, a very chic home
deserves an equally premium
air-conditioning unit materialized
by TOSOT in their
U-Crown Split Type Aircon. This
wall mounted aircon is a combination
of elegance with a hint of
modern and innovative technology,
perfect for luxurious ancestral
houses and modern homes.
Here are a few other reasons why
Philippine elite families choose
TOSOT U-Crown Split Type
Aircon.
Unique Style and Design
While many other split type
aircon in the Philippines have
the average-looking designs,
TOSOT U-Crown wall mounted
aircon is a definite stand out. Its
slim U-shape integrated IDU
design complements an equally
elegant building interior and
acts more of an aesthetic than a
cooling unit. Another plus in its
design is the 18dBA low noise
which is practically negligible in
a mansion as big the elite families
have. Thanks to this neat feature,
52

this aircon can be installed in
noise-sensitive areas such as the
bedroom or library. Besides those
mentioned features, TOSOT
U-Crown Premium Series is also
built with a wide air outlet with
waterfall cooling, suitable for
enjoying a relaxing lazy day
during the summer.
R410A Eco-Friendly
Refrigerant
Modern air-conditioning units
have already adopted the use
of eco-friendly refrigerants in
their models, and TOSOT is
among those who have taken the
earth-friendly route in
aircon manufacturing. TOSOT
U-Crown Premium Series is not
an exception in this route as it
features a very eco-friendly
refrigerant called R410A.
Homeowners can now cool
themselves all day long all while
preserving the beloved environment
with this low-impact wall
mount aircon.
Powerful Performance
Fabricated with a full DC inverter
that lengthens the life of the
unit and lessens the total energy
cost, TOSOT U-Crown Premium
Series aircon is packed with powerful
performance. Its two-stage
compressor that operates from
-30 to 54 degrees provides a more
flexible option to the users. They
can easily switch from freezing
cold to burning hot in a matter of
seconds, all with a push of a remote
button. Its capacity outputs
up to 18,000 BTU per hour and
can cool large function rooms
up to about 1000 square feet. It
also features four different kinds
of sleeping modes, adding to the
user’s degree of freedom.
Maximum Efficiency
Although elite families can
obviously spend thousands of
pesos for their electricity bills, a
couple hundred pesos in savings
can still do them good. With the
aircon’s 1Hz Inverter technology
that adds to the unit’s energy
efficiency, even elite families can
enjoy paying less for more. Its
minimum input power is 15W
to 0.2W standby power that will
greatly save on energy consumption
for the whole house. Pairing
this with a full DC inverter and
an eco-friendly refrigerant,
higher machine efficiency is a
definite guarantee.
Asphalt Maintenance Tips From a
Colorado Springs Company
Tips on how to care for and
maintain asphalt surfaces to
ensure their longevity
Asphalt has the durability to
take on years of vehicle and foot
traffic without any visible signs
of damage. However, all asphalt
surfaces must be repaved when
its materials break down or suffer
wear and tear. There’s no need to
worry, however, as this article will
give you tips on how to care for
and maintain asphalt surfaces to
ensure their longevity.
Seal Your Asphalt
Sealing your asphalt driveways in
the dry summer season will help
increase its longevity. It is best
to apply asphalt sealant at least
once every two years to renew
its protective layer and have it
looking fresh again. According
to an asphalt Colorado Springs
company, sealants help maintain
the durability and strength of the
asphalt’s foundation, making it
last longer for years to come.
62

FEATURE STORY
Repair Cracks
Regular preemptive inspections
are vital in keeping your asphalt
driveway in tip-top shape. Make
sure to repair cracks ahead of
time, before any extreme weather
conditions begin. Although
small cracks in your pavement
may seem harmless, it can rapidly
expand and cause serious issues
when exposed to harsh elements
and regular use.
Water percolation can cause
cracks to erode and weaken the
substrate below its surface, which
can also lead to crocodile cracking.
Spotting cracks and repairing
them at first sight can help you
avoid expensive repair jobs in the
future. It can also be in your best
interest to hire a reliable concrete
repair Colorado Springs company
to inspect and repair damages
on your asphalt driveway.
Shovel The Snow
Removing snow from your
driveway is an essential part of
maintenance. As the snow builds
up, it can lead to hazardous
conditions when driving in or
out of your property. For example,
a snow-covered driveway or
parking lot can be slippery for
pedestrians and vehicles alike.
Regularly removing snow can
help the asphalt retain its integrity
and help reduce the likelihood
of incidents from happening on
your property.
64

FEATURE STORY
Clean It Up
A simple step such as cleaning
and removing debris on your
driveway can go a long way
when it comes to asphalt damage
prevention. You should regularly
remove dirt, leaves, debris, and
standing water from your driveway
and parking lot. Although it’s
best to keep your driveway clean
at all times, this can be particularly
important before winter
begins, as snow can freeze and
stick debris to the asphalt surface.
Frozen debris on your driveway
can be potentially harmful for
you, your family, and to the
asphalt surface.
Use Potassium Chloride
Rock salt can be effective in
neutralizing slippery conditions
on asphalt surfaces; however, it
can also harm the asphalt
pavement. Rock salts are highly
corrosive and can cause
premature external damages on
your asphalt driveway and
parking lot. Avoid using rock
salt as a deicing agent and use
less-damaging alternatives, such
as potassium chloride.
Closing Thoughts
Proper maintenance can go a
long way in ensuring the
longevity of your asphalt
pavement. Although these tips
can be easy enough to do
yourself, it can still be a daunting
task. Save yourself from
unnecessary trouble and look for
a reliable and professional asphalt
company.
