Using renewable energy has
proved to provide better
services and fewer
consequences compared to
using fossil fuels and biomass.
Wind turbines, for instance,
are capable of producing the
same amount of electricity that
burning natural gas can
produce. Wind turbines’
emissions only account for
about 2% of the total
emissions of burning natural
gas.
This reason alone is
acceptable enough to
convince the public to switch
to alternative resources.
However, there are still a few
groups and individuals who
support renewable energy

but do not fully accept the
change. They feel alarmed of
being near solar power farms,
wind farms, and even
geothermal farms, accusing
the developers of possible
health consequences.
These are apparent
misunderstandings on the
part of the consumer, but the
developer end has the same
mistakes as well. It is always a
must to back up new
renewable energy projects
with proper public education
and information dissemination
to further advertise the product
and make the public aware of
its benefits to the environment
and the end users.
Social media is a simple
answer to this. There are
already a billion people using
various social media outlets
every single day. It is only
appropriate to approach the
problem in a way that it will
connect to more people in the
fastest and more convenient
possible way.

Over the past couple of
decades, the world has
suffered from excessive
environmental pollution and
energy consumption. This has
lead companies, investors,
and even environment activists
to venture into the concept
of alternative energy sources
that they believe would help
reduce these excesses,
eventually improving, if not
completely saving, the world.
For technical people working
in the industry, renewable
energy is the obvious solution
to today’s problems. Using
renewable energy meant
utilizing Earth’s imperishable

fewer fossil fuels, emitting less
pollution to the environment,
and helping Earth re-adjust its
original climate.
While this already sounds
impressive and is expected
to gain public support, in
reality, there are still a handful
of groups who are skeptical

not everyone completely
understands the process of
renewable energy production.
Although the vast majority of
non-technical people realize
how this can significantly
positively impact the
environment, they know little to
none about how these things
really work.
It is natural for people to think
ill of something that they do
not fully comprehend, and it’s
understandable where the
strong opposition to renewable
energy development is coming
from. That leads us to the core
solution to this problem —
educate the public.
Years ago when the
Industrial Revolution was at
its initial stages, the public
doubts nearly anything new

Intels Framework for Automated Vehicle Safety
Standard Gaining Global Acceptance
What’s New: European auto
technology supplier Valeo* has
publicly embraced Intel’s model
for safer automated vehicle (AV)
decision-making and agreed to
collaborate on standards
development in Europe and
elsewhere. Baidu* reported the
first open-source
implementation of
Responsibility-Sensitive Safety
(RSS). And China ITS, the
standards body for the world’s
largest passenger vehicle market,
has approved a proposal to use
RSS as the basis for a forthcoming
automated vehicle (AV) safety
standard. These moves
demonstrate the progress and
value of a technology-neutral
standard like RSS for safer AV
decision
making.
Why It Matters: With safety being
one of the biggest roadblocks to
AV adoption, the auto industry
has become increasingly vocal
about the need for measurable,
technology-neutral standards for
AV safety. Demonstrable
assurances are needed so
governments know when it’s time
to grant AVs the license to drive.
As these announcements demonstrate,
Intel’s RSS safety
model – first introduced in 2017
– is being recognized globally
as a viable option on which to
develop those assurances and
standards.
How Valeo is Adopting RSS:
Top-tier, European-based
automotive supplier Valeo will
collaborate on policies and
technologies intended to bolster
the adoption of AV safety
standards in Europe, the U.S. and
China. The agreement involves
drafting of frameworks for the
verification and commercial
deployment of safe AVs, funding
of public research on the RSS
model, contributing to draft
standards, and participating in
key committees and working
groups in designated standards
organizations.
With a core priority on safety,
Valeo will contribute to RSS with
its expertise in environment
perception and sensors, an area

where Valeo currently ranks as
world leader, and its
collaborations in worldwide
safety and regulation working
groups.
How Baidu is Advancing RSS:
Baidu, which announced plans
to adopt RSS as part of its Apollo
Project last year, demonstrated a
successful implementation of RSS
during a CES news conference
today. As the world’s first
open-source implementation of
RSS, Baidu successfully
demonstrated that RSS is truly a
technology-neutral solution for
safety and therefore useful with
or without Mobileye technology
or support.
What the China ITS Approval
Means: A proposal to use RSS as
the foundation for a
technology-neutral standard for
the safety assurance of
autonomous vehicle
decision-making was approved
by China ITS. The workgroup
will define safety thresholds,
dangerous situations and proper
responses as well as development
of measurements for each
of these criteria in the unique
driving scenarios in the China
market. The workgroup
developing the standard will be
chaired by Intel and includes
representation from the Research
Institute of Highway (RIOH),
Tsinghua University, Autonavi,
Tongji University, the Beijing
Traffic Planning Committee and
others to be determined.
Other RSS Progress:
In October 2018, the Arizona
Institute for Automated Mobility*
(IAM) was established with the
primary mission of exploring and
delivering AV safety. IAM will
use RSS as the foundation for its
research and testing of AV safety.
In a recent report, RAND
Corporation*, a leading think
tank, cited RSS as a way to
implement a “safety envelope,”
which RAND says is needed for
AVs to achieve “roadmanship.”
The new mobility as a service
(MaaS) collaborations
announced with Mobileye,
Volkswagen* and Champion
Motors* in Israel and also with
Beijing Public Transport will also
leverage the RSS model for safety
in their fleets.
Why It’s Different: RSS was first
proposed in 2017 by Mobileye
CEO Professor Amnon Shashua
and CTO Professor Shai
Shalev-Shwartz. It is a
technology-neutral starting point
for the industry to align on what
it means for an AV to drive safely.
RSS formalizes human notions
of safe driving into a verifiable
model with logically provable
rules and defined responses.
This is different from the safety
decision-making systems in
autonomous vehicles today that
are based on probabilistic
artificial intelligence (AI).
Because of AI’s probabilistic
nature, Intel recommends a
separate, deterministic layer – or
safety envelope – that checks the
safety of an AV’s decisions based
on well-understood definitions of
what it means to drive safely. This
model prescribes safety and does
not rely on millions of miles of
driving history to teach safety.

Google Tops BCG’s List of 50 Most
Innovative Companies for First Time
2019 Report Finds AI, Platforms, and Ecosystems Reshaping How Leading Companies Innovate
For the first time, there’s a
shakeup at the top of BCG’s
annual list of the most innovative
companies. In this year’s global
survey of more than 2,500 senior
innovation leaders, longtime
leader Apple ranks third, and
Google (or its parent company,
Alphabet) and Amazon move up
to first and second place,
respectively. Microsoft and
Samsung round out the top five.
Although tech companies hold
nine of the top ten places,
traditional industries are account
for more than half of the top 50
list. Adidas (#10), Boeing (#11),
BASF (#12), Johnson & Johnson
(#14), and DowDuPont (#15)
rank in the top 15. T-Mobile
(#13), DowDuPont, Vale (#19),
Stryker (#35), and Rio Tinto
(#49) join the list for the first
time.
The rising importance of
digital technology continues to
be an overarching megatrend for
innovators. In particular, BCG’s
new report, The Most Innovative
Companies 2019: The Rise of AI,
Platforms, and Ecosystems, finds
that innovators are increasingly
embracing AI as a way to develop
new products and services and
improve internal innovation. In
addition, innovators are
embracing technology platforms
and their cousin, ecosystems, to
tap into sources of external
innovation and differentiation.
“Digital technology and external
innovation have become
watchwords,” said Ramón Baeza,
a BCG senior partner and
report coauthor. “All of the top
ten companies—and many in the
top 50—use AI, platforms, and
ecosystems to enable themselves
and others to pursue new
products, services, and ways of
working.”
AI Gains Traction
Among survey respondents, 90%
reported that their companies
are investing in AI. More than
30% expect AI to be among the
innovation areas with the highest
impact on their businesses in the
next three to five years. Almost
30% are actively targeting AI in
their innovation programs.
A skills gap is evident with
respect to AI. More than 65% of
self-described strong innovators
rate themselves as above average
on AI, versus just 2% of weak
innovators. Just under 20% of all
respondents see their
organizations as both strong
innovators and above average on
AI (a group the report calls AI
leaders). Among AI leaders, 94%
see AI as important to their
organizations’ future growth,
versus 56% of AI laggards
(respondents who rate their
organization’s AI capabilities as
below average).

“AI will have a significant impact
on business processes, but its
biggest potential lies in
developing new products and
services that can yield major
revenue streams over time,” said
Michael Ringel, a BCG senior
partner and report coauthor.
“AI leaders are already blazing a
trail,” he said, noting that leaders
reported much higher
percentages of sales driven by
AI-enhanced products or
services introduced in the past
three years.
Among AI leaders, 46% say
AI-enhanced products and
services represented 16% or more
of sales, versus 10% for laggards.
And AI leaders and laggards see
AI playing a larger role in the
future, with 54% of leaders and
22% of laggards expecting more
than 16% of sales to come from
AI-enhanced products and
services in the next five years.
Strong Innovators Access
Outside Resources
Rising use of AI is one factor
driving increased interest in platforms
and ecosystems. AI leaders
say they are more likely to use
external vendors for AI projects,
with 36% relying entirely on external
vendors and another 48%
using mostly external services
or a mix or internal and outside
capabilities. This approach may
be helping leaders climb the AI
curve quickly, since expertise is
still in short supply.
This year’s report shows
organizations increasingly
looking beyond their own walls
for new ideas. Partnership
models are on the rise: from 2015
to 2018, more strong innovators
are using incubators (rising from
59% to 75%), academic
partnerships (rising from 60% to
81%), and company partnerships
(rising from 65% to 83%).
“Digital technologies enable
collaboration platforms, and
collaboration platforms enable
ecosystems that bring
together a group of organizations
to build a new capability or
product or service offering, or to
push forward a new field of
science or technology,” said
Florian Grassl, a BCG partner
and report coauthor. “Not all
ecosystems are alike,
however. They have different
types of glue that bind their
participants. Money is one type,
of course, but knowledge, data,
skills, and community can be
equally important.”
Some ecosystems are expansions
of traditional ways of organizing
and doing business. They tend to
have an orchestrator at the center,
with which all the other
participants interact, and
established hierarchies and
structures. Other ecosystems,
including many of those that are
involved in the early research
phase of research and
development, tend to be more
dynamic. They rely less on a
central orchestrator and more on
multifaceted interactions among
participants.
