The next facet of your site investigation puts<br />

you in the observation post. Stop by the site a<br />

few times during the week and monitor the<br />

traffic patterns, during both day and night.<br />

Note the types of crowds, looking for the people<br />

you’ve already identified as your ideal customer.<br />

Do they appear, and if so, when? If the<br />

only time your ideal shopper strolls through is<br />

early Saturday morning, you may not be able<br />

to attract enough shoppers to support your<br />

business. Many purchases are made on impulse,<br />

but your customer must be in the area<br />

before that sudden urge to buy strikes. Note the<br />

type of crowds that gather in the area toward<br />

the evening hours. A group of boisterous<br />

teenagers may make you suddenly nostalgic<br />

for your own reckless youth, but they will also<br />

keep certain shoppers away.<br />

If the storefront sits on the street, monitor the<br />

auto traffic. A busy road can prove too busy if<br />

the pace of traffic discourages drivers to slow<br />

down and turn in to your parking lot. Is there<br />

a turning lane, and a progression of traffic<br />

lights to regulate the flow? These can actually<br />

encourage people to pull off the road for a<br />

shopping diversion. How visible is the store<br />
