COTTAGE COORDINATOR’S CATCH UP
I hope this finds you happy and healthy! What a
busy month July turned out to be. Once again, we
had over 200 people through our doors, multiple
car trips, food relief packages, seniors days, training
days, school holidays and much, much more making
July quite hectic.
Two of our wonderful volunteers Debra and
Wendy excelled themselves with our Christmas in
July lunch and we had 26 people attend. The food
was glorious and the company fantastic! They
received beautiful bunches of flowers from the
Seniors who wanted to show their appreciation.
We have been quite successful on the grant front,
winning a large grant from Transport Victoria to
revamp our car booking systems, expand our
program, recruit more drivers (yippee we now have
20 on our books) and move into the electronic age.
As part of this, we held a driver training session
that 14 attended. Some pics from our day.
We are always looking for new committee members
and if you are interested, please drop by The
Cottage to collect a nomination form. Management
Committee members play a vital role in serving
their communities and bring passion, commitment,
skills and experience to the Neighbourhood House
that they lead. If you are new to committees, there
is no need to worry. You will be provided with all of
the information you need; role descriptions, induction
packages, as well as ongoing support and
advice from The Cottage team.
Looking forward to seeing you, the heaters are on!
Take care and bye for now
Kezia
Finally, our AGM is on Monday the 16 th of
September at 7pm. To be held at The Cottage in
the utility room (at the back) it will be well lit, warm
and inviting. Tea, coffee and a light supper will be
provided.
SGR GIANTS VISIT THE HANGER
On Thursday July 4 the SGR Giants ventured to Melbourne to visit The Hangar, the home of the Essendon Football
Club.
Reports filtering back are very positive with the children having a great time. For many of the Giants this may be a
once in a lifetime opportunity.
Players would like to thank Ian Harris for driving the bus and assisting, along with Rick Miller, Mick McLeod, Ian
Simpson and Rob Donovan for supervising the day and thank you to the SGR Giants for providing this opportunity.
The players also had a training session on the ovals
that they have. One being a replica of the MCG and
one a replica of Marvel Stadium.
Players from the under 12's and under 14's were
given the opportunity to explore the inner sanctum
of The Hangar, taking a look around the gym, the
recovery pools and the rehab areas.
GARDENING NOTES
Understanding Plant Dormancy: Nearly all plants go dormant in winter—
whether they’re growing indoors or out in the garden. This period of rest is
crucial to their survival in order to regrow each year. While plant dormancy
during cold conditions is important, it may be equally important during
times of stress. For instance, during periods of extreme heat or drought,
many plants (especially trees) will go into a dormancy-like state, shedding
their leaves early in order to conserve what little moisture may be available
to ensure their survival.
10 July
Well the excitement for last week was the power went out.
Not a huge problem but the temperature plummeted meaning
we were huddled around trying to keep warm. Debra had
the foresight to utilise the gas and boil the water for a cuppa,
just what we needed. After an hour the power returned and
we had a lovely lunch of soup and bread and butter pudding.
Didn’t play games or do puzzles, we just chatted quite happily.
After lunch we all departed quite early as we had things to do.
17 July
Last week we went to the Shepparton RSL for some lively
entertainment with Mick Tenace. The place was packed to
the rafters with four more tables squished in, maybe the cold
weather is driving everyone inside. When Debra was taking
orders everyone was picking the roast, even Buff much to
Debra’s surprise as Buff always orders the fish. Well, when it
came to the meal delivery with one roast left to collect, no
one was claiming it and Buff didn’t have meal. When Debra
said Buff you ordered the roast, he was quite shocked, so fish
for Buff from now on. We think he just got caught up in the
roast ordering frenzy. On the way home we noticed that the
river was up and saw the damage done to the trees from the
storm on the weekend. Our volunteers excelled themselves
with door to door service, dropping the seniors off at their
homes.
24 July
The Girgarre Community Cottage Seniors had their Christmas
in July lunch last week and what a turn out we had. 26 people
joined us for a traditional roast lunch of pork & lamb with all
of the trimmings. This was followed by plum puddings, custard
and cheesecake, thanks Joy. There was a slight debacle
over a packet of liquorice all-sorts, but it was all sorted… pardon
the pun! Debra saved the day (and the lollies) so there
are some for our next trip. away,
31 July
SENIORS NOTES
What a wonderful trip we had to Seymour , even though it
was a tad grey and cold. The Vietnam wall was well worth the
trip, very interesting and the habitat display really enhances
the visit. We wandered around for about an hour and then
the cold beat us, back to the bus we went. We drove around
Seymour, taking in the sights as one of our regulars had never
been to Seymour before. We settled on lunch at one of the
pubs, the Railway Hotel and the food was delicious. House
made snitzels and a very yummy lambs fry, bacon and mash.
Hearty and warming after being out in the cold. After lunch
we went and had a look at the Seymour Railway station which
is beautifully historic. On the way home, we came through
Mooroopna as some had never been on that road for a bit of
a look see.

fencing had been installed and that frames are being
laid out across the paddocks.
Solar Farm Peter Leeson reported that they are waiting
on the final report for confirmation of the undertaken
studies from AEMO (Australian Energy Operator). These
studies make sure the systems can be maintained. Peter
expects to attend the August Development Group
miserable, cold market that many could remember.
Amazingly some stall holders reported average takings
while some even had good sales. Have commenced
work on a new logo for our market. The newly appointed
market committee has met once to discuss the
appointment of a coordinator who will manage the day
to day running of the market (please see add in this
Gazette page 19).
Graeme Leak Graeme Leak has very happily accepted a
short two week contract with Girgarre in January.
Graeme is hoping to involve two creative artists from
Melbourne for one of the planning days. Both artists are
leaders in their craft and would be a great contribution
to the thinking in the next stage of the Sound Walk. It is
envisaged that perhaps as many as 6 new installations
will be designed and delivered. Wallace has already great
plans for a Dethridge wheel.
August to plan out the next stages for the orchestra
which will include a performance at the Moosic Muster
volunteers who work tirelessly in setting up for all the
events we hold in Girgarre – they toil away to ensure
that our events are well managed and safe for all and will
be undertaking additional training in Traffic management
and OH & S in October. Recently this team undertook
the renumbering of the sites for both the Craft and
Produce Markets.
winter program with 50 musicians participating in a day
filled with upbeat music and song – this month featured
everything Rock and Roll – Jigarre Jammin’ is held on the
4th Saturday of every month and everybody is welcome
to come along to listen, to play and to sing.
RSL Rob Axen reported that the Girgarre RSL is still in
the planning stage of Going for Gold program as well as
the planning for the 100-year celebration in 2020.
Gargarro Botanical Garden Doc reported on a very
positive meeting with Regional Development Victoria re
the Detail Design funding. He also reported that a steering
committee for the delivery of the Detailed Design
of Stage 1 of the Gardens will be made up of the board
members of Gargarro, Bernie Ryan from Friends of the
Gardens, Jill Burness a BEGANZ representative, Claire
Wood, a RDV rep and Jim Begly from the CMA. Discussions
were also held re next steps with the establishment
of the nursery at the gardens. It was also resolved that
the Development Group would purchase a portable
toilet for use at the gardens and nursery as well as being
able to be used at events held in Girgarre.
Rushworth & District Community Bank- Partnering with Girgarre
CUSTOMERS AND COMMUNITIES FIRST
Ever since the Royal Commission into the banking industry,
the culture of banking in Australia has become a hot topic.
The attitude of the big four banks, along with other financial
industry groups towards their customers was intensely
scrutinised, creating a great deal of ongoing interest in the
media.
The Bendigo Bank, via its Community Bank franchises is very
proud of its success and culture. They do not however, ‘rest
on their laurels’, but continue to build the good reputation
they have earned over many years of service to the local community.
The focus of the recent Regional Community Bank Conference
in Marysville had this approach at its heart. Strategies to
strengthen Community Banking's vision of being the Bank of
Choice for small rural Communities was a central theme of the
conference. The aim is to continue to develop a friendly and
professional approach to customers; one that that always
puts the customer first alongside the community networks the
bank and customers alike support.
Strategies included were designed to reduce any complexity
when dealing with customers; by investing in talented and
diverse staff and by providing them with training and a workplace
where they are comfortable and valued. This continuing
focus on customer service has been a very successful component
of the Community Banking program now so widespread
across Victoria.
Three of the Rushworth and District Community Bank Directors
and myself attended the Regional Community Bank
Conference. Events such as these keep us informed of developments
and issues faced by Community Banks in the changing
world of banking. We especially enjoyed networking with
other directors from Community Banks throughout Victoria
and Tasmania. Volunteer Directors are at the heart of
Community banking and we found it a very useful event to
attend.
During the conference it was also pleasing to see the Rushworth
P-12 Breakfast Program included in the video of the
‘Making the Change’ advertising campaign in the media. Until
next time, Christine Borger. Chair.
Rushworth & District Community Bank.

GIRGARRE KINDERGARTEN
Where has the year gone? The months seem to be going by so
fast, yet upon reflection we have certainly managed to achieve
a lot in that time.
Term Two highlights were the Mother’s Day Afternoon, Flying Bookwork Excursion into Kyabram, Uncle Rick’s Aboriginal Smoking
Ceremony, St Augustine School Visit and a Teddy Bear Picnic. Term Three is looking just as exciting with library borrowing
commencing, Bravehearts Incursion and Father’s Day Afternoon.
Earn & Learn Stickers
For all those who collected Woolworth Earn and Learn stickers, we sincerely thank
you for your support. We had hundreds handed in to kinder, dropped in the boxes
at Kyabram and even some mailed to us from family and friends in other towns and
cities! In total we filled 111 sheets of stickers! For a kindergarten with eight families
this was a phenomenal effort. The frightening part of this tally is that each sheet
reflects $600 worth of groceries – that’s a total of $66,600! The outcome of this program
is so positive for our kinder children. Robyn (lead educator) has been able to
purchase an amazing array of resources for our kindergarten that includes sand pit
buckets, kinder scissors, yoga cards, mortar and pestle, measuring volume cylinders.
Pies & Slices
Our Term Two Fundraiser was a great success. We managed to sell over $700 worth of pies and slices from
Kyabram Bakery – that’s over 35 pies and 15 slices! Combined with our KPMC kindergartens in Kyabram over
$1000 was raised for our three kindergartens! Thank you!
ARB Car Fridge Raffle
Our Term Three Fundraiser is a Father’s Day Raffle. The major prize is a 60L ARB Car
Fridge valued at $1,700. Tickets are only $5 and will be sold up until the 30 th August
2019. If you are interested please contact our PAC Fundraising contact Sally on
0419 481 825 or drop into the kinder and see Robyn.
Plastic Bottle Top Collection
The Girgarre Cottage is currently collecting plastic lids
from milk, juice, water and soft drink bottles for
Envision, to be converted into prosthetic hands for
kids. Girgarre Kindergarten has offered to support
The Cottage by having another drop off point for collection
around town. Please feel free to drop off any
cleaned lids you may have to the kinder (as well as
The Cottage) where an upcycled Earn and Learn Woolworth box is located in our foyer area.
For more information https://envision.au/envision-hands/
Enrolments 2020
It is never too late to join in the fun at Girgarre Kindergarten!
We are under the umbrella of KPMC (Kyabram Preschool Management Committee) which have formally closed enrolments for
2020 but there are still places at Girgarre. Families are welcome any time during opening hours to drop in and view the daily
events and enrol. The Lead educator, Robyn Swan is happy to assist in any way. Our hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
9am to 2pm.
FENNEL—aniseed flavour.
Eat raw, roasted, in soups and salads.
Rich source of Vitamin C
One cup of fennel bulb contains almost 20 percent of the daily requirement of vitamin C,
making it quite a rich source of this beneficial vitamin of our diet. Vitamin C improves general
immune system health, produces and repairs skin tissues, helps form collagen, and protects the
blood vessel walls as an antioxidant against the harmful effects of free radicals that can frequently
lead to heart diseases.
GOOD YARN—A woman had just returned to her home
from an evening of church services when she was startled by
an intruder.
She caught the man in the act of robbing her home of its
valuables and yelled:
"Stop !! Acts 2:38 !!" (Repent and be Baptised, in the name
of Jesus Christ, so that your sins may be forgiven.)
The burglar stopped in his tracks. The woman calmly called
the Police and explained what she had done.
As the Officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the
burglar:
ANOTHER MILESTONE CENTENARY GIRGARRE - RSL Turns 100 next year.
Girgarre R.S.L will turn over a century of service to
the Girgarre and District community in 2020. What a
remarkable milestone for the men and women of the
district who have faithfully served our nation in peace
and in war.
Early planning has begun with a proposed date for the
celebrations of 3 October 2020, (the first Saturday in October),
so please factor this in your long-range plans.
To happen however, the support of those of you who
have any photos or memorabilia you are willing to share
would be appreciated. Stories from over the years would also
be very welcome. We are more than happy to make sure all
items are safely returned.
If you have can help, we would love to hear
from you. Contacts:
August 24 Jigarre Jammin’ Session.
The winter program for August is something special. Some of our liveliest musicians have put together some
Tunes for the Middle Jam. Nothing too strenuous, a mix of lively and pretty. This is an opportunity for melody
players to come to the fore, whether you play by ear or read music, you will have an opportunity to focus on
the melodies. The rest of us will strum or pick along. It will be wonderful hour of fabulous music, led by the
Billabong Bushies and the Pure Drop band. Remember it's for everyone, no expertise needed.
September Camp weekend sees us revert to our Summer Program until winter next year.
September 26-29 Camp Month
A fantastic weekend of camaraderie and musical Allsorts. We open up the Hall facilities and you are welcome to use them,
including the BBQ. It always nice to get together and socialise over our meals in the Supper room. There's heaps of room for
everyone and the amenities are good (hot showers). Wander over and introduce yourself to the other campers, maybe join in a
Jam. There's nothing nicer than small groups, sometimes large ones, making music waft over the park or everyone sharing a
drink and a nibble as the sun sets. Please remember this is a BYO weekend, you need to be self sufficient if camping, there's
only a small Post Office cum store in Girgarre, it sells some basics and has plenty of ice cream on offer. Stanhope has a supermarket
and cafe which is 6km away to the south.
