On page 1 today, we reveal Lincoln couple Angela and Phillip Eberhard have set up Lava Scooters. They have applied to the district council to operate 50 e-scooters in and between Lincoln, Rolleston and Prebbleton, creating competition for Lime which could also get under way in Rolleston in December. Having said that, the odd Lime scooter has already invaded the district. Usually you will see them abandoned on a Saturday or Sunday morning, probably the transport mode of choice for a long ride home from Christchurch after an ale or seven. The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand’s latest monthly property report shows the volume of houses sold in the district has dropped 29 per cent in the last month and 12.3 per cent in the last year. Harcourts Lincoln principal officer James Twiss said the figures are affected by the James Twiss seasons. “With winter hitting, people tend to be less active when it comes to buying and selling homes. There is also that a lot less people have been listing homes for sale,” he said. “Volumes will definitely be lower for not only this month, but probably for the next three months.” The report also shows the median house price in the district has dropped by 3.6 per cent since this time last year. It now sits at $568,000, Hon Amy Adams MP for Selwyn Working hard for our communities compared to $589,000 last year. Mr Twiss said the drop could be due to a number of factors. “The main factor may be that the number of new properties being sold may have been less in this period, and as new built homes tend to command a higher price than already built stock, this would certainly lower the median price.” With the lack of listings, sales volumes could stay lower than 2019 last year for a few months, he said. “But as the number of listings increases, I would assume sales volumes will also. In Rolleston, a minimum net density of 12 households per hectare will also be implemented. The town currently has a net density of 10 households per hectare. •Property checks vital, p12 In Brief ROLLESTON PROJECTS The contractors to undertake four major projects in Rolleston are expected to be chosen at a district council meeting next month. Group manager property Douglas Marshall said it is hoping to make a decision on the construction tenders for the proposed health hub, Selwyn Aquatic Centre extension, Te Ara Ātea library and community centre, and the wider Rolleston town centre upgrade. CREATIVE FUNDING Applications are open for funding from the Creative Communities Scheme until 5pm on August 30. Funding is available to groups or individuals with communitybased, creative projects that promote arts or culture in the district.
