PHOTOSHOP<br />
Photoshopcanbethemostintimidatingofthetwo.Why?Simplybecause<br />
itismorecomplexthanLightroom.Thecapabilitiesofthissoftwareare<br />
outofthisworld.Thiscanbegoodorbad,especialyforthoseverynew<br />
toediting.<br />
ProsofPhotoshop<br />
Thefactthatitissuchacomplexeditingtool,isanadvantageforthose<br />
whoareintomoreindepthcreativeartisticedits.Thispostprocessing<br />
softwareissopowerfulandhassomanyoptionsthatyoucanletyour<br />
imaginationgoabsolutelywild,creatinganythingyoucandream of.
LayersAndMasks<br />
Photoshop'slayersandmasksareoneofthebiggestperksofthe<br />
software.Thesealonehelpyoutonotonlymakelocalisededitson<br />
specifiedareasofanimage,butlayersandmasksalsoalowyouto<br />
combinemultipleimages.<br />
Whatdoesthismean?Beingabletocombineimagesalowsyouto<br />
createwhateveryourheartdesires.Forexample,youcantakean<br />
imagethatyoutookofyourchildsitinginyourfrontyard,andturnit<br />
intothesameimage/poseofyourchildinacompletelydiferent<br />
seting.<br />
Thistypeofcompositeeditingrequiresalotofpatienceandpractice.<br />
But,forthosewithawildcreativemind,Photoshopisdefinitelythe<br />
waytogo.
BasicEdits<br />
WhilePhotoshopdoesletyoudosomeseriousin-depthediting,youcan<br />
stiluseitforbasiceditsonly,suchasexposure,highlights/shadows,and<br />
brightness/contrastadjustments.<br />
PhotoshopActions<br />
TheActionsPanelinPhotoshopalowsyoutoactualyrecordandsave<br />
specificeditingstepsandadjustments,sothatyoucangobackandjust<br />
hit“play”anytimeyouwanttoaddthesameadjustmentswithout<br />
repeatingthestepsoverandover.<br />
Youcanevenpurchaseactionsfrom expertstogetcertaindesiredlooks.<br />
Actionscanrealybeatimesaverifusedproperly.Andwealknowtime<br />
ismoney.
ConsofPhotoshop<br />
Photoshopisn’tforeveryone.Somephotographerssimplydonotneedalof<br />
thebutons,tabsandoptionsithastoofer.Asstatedearlier,torealy<br />
becomefamiliarwiththeinsandoutsofthissoftwarerequiresabitofa<br />
learningcurve.Thiscanbeoverwhelmingforbeginners.Ifyoudon’thave<br />
thetimeandpatiencerequiredtorealygettoknowthissoftware,it’s<br />
probablynotforyou.<br />
TakingThePlunge<br />
IfyouhaveenoughpatiencetodiveintotheworldofPhotoshop,youcould<br />
realyopenyourselfuptoawholenewworldofcreativity.Thepossibilities<br />
aretrulyendless.<br />
Watchingonlinetutorialscanbeawonderfulwaytolearntheropesof<br />
Photoshop.Themoreyoudiginandpractice,theeasieritwilcometoyou<br />
intime.Thekeyisnottoletyourselfgettoooverwhelmedatfirst.Begin<br />
withthebasicsandgofrom there.
LIGHTROOM<br />
Lightroom cangohandinhandwithPhotoshop,orbeusedstrictlyonits<br />
own.BeginnerphotographersoftenpreferLightroom overPhotoshop<br />
becauseitismoreuserfriendlyandmucheasiertonavigate.<br />
ManyphotographersuseLightroom astheirgotopostprocessing<br />
softwarewhentheyneedtodoquickedits(saturation,contrast,<br />
sharpeningetc).Mostofthebutonsandslidersyouneedareinplain<br />
sightanddon’trequireyoutogothroughmultipletabstolocatethem.<br />
Presets<br />
PresetsarebasicalythesameasPhotoshopActions.Theyalowyouto<br />
recordspecificstepsandadjustmentstouseagainandagainatalater<br />
timewiththesimpletouchofabuton.<br />
Presetscansaveyoutimewhenyouhaveaparticularoverallookyouare<br />
goingfor.<br />
Ifusingthebuilt-inpresets,besurethatyouunderstandthechanges<br />
beingmadetotheimage.Youcantweakeachchangeandadjustas<br />
needed,asyoumaynotneedalofthechangesthepresetproduces.A<br />
presetthatworksononeimage,maynotgivethesameefectfora<br />
diferentimage.<br />
TheresultswilvarygreatlydependingonyourSOOC(StraightOutOf<br />
Camera)results.
BatchEditing<br />
AnotherbenefitofLightroom isthatyoucaneditmultipleimagesat<br />
once.Thisrealycomesinhandywheneditingalargebatchofphotos<br />
from abigevent,likeawedding.<br />
Ifyouknowyouneedtoadjusttheexposure,orhighlightsandshadows<br />
withthesamestrengthinmultipleimages,youcanapplythechangesto<br />
alfilesatthesametime,ratherthangoingthroughandeditingthem one<br />
byone.<br />
ThisisoneofthebiggestperkstousingLightroom formany<br />
photographers.Speedingupyourworkflowcanbeahugetimesaver.<br />
Catalogs<br />
Lightroom hasafeaturecaledCatalogs.Thisalowsyoutocatalogyour<br />
imagesinanorganisedwaybasedonmanyfactors.Someofthosefactors<br />
includedate,location,orevent/sessionname.<br />
Whenyouhavealotofsessionsunderyourbelt,yourphotocolection<br />
canstarttobuildupquickly.Catalogsrealyhelpmakeitsimplerto<br />
locatespecificimageswhenneeded,ratherthansearchingthroughtons<br />
ofimagesthataren’torganised.
ConsofLightroom<br />
Lightroom doesn’thavenearlyasmanyoptionsasPhotoshop.Thismeans<br />
ifyouarelookingtodoextremelyin-depthcreativeedits,thisprobably<br />
isn’tthesoftwareforyou.<br />
Lightroom definitelyhasalotofoptionsforediting,justnotnearasmany<br />
asPhotoshop.<br />
Whatwesuggestforyou,istodoyourbasiceditsinLightroom,then<br />
transfertoPhotoshoptodomoreindeptheditsonceyouaremore<br />
comfortablewithPhotoshop.
BreakingItDown<br />
Ifyouarenewtoediting,Lightroom wouldbeagreatstartforyou.The<br />
userfriendlysoftwareiseasytonavigate,solearningyourwayaround<br />
basicadjustmentsisn’ttoodifficult.<br />
Ifyouareaphotographerwhowilrelyheavilyonbatchediting,thisis<br />
alsoyourbestoption.Lightroom isgreatforthosewhoshootweddings,<br />
concerts,oranylargeeventswhereyouwilbeeditingmultipleimages<br />
withthesameadjustments.<br />
Ifyouareinterestedindoingartisticedits/compositeswheremany<br />
adjustmentsareneededand/ormergingofmultipleimages(swapinasky<br />
etc),Lightroom probablywon’tdothetrick.Inthiscase,you'lneed<br />
Photoshop.<br />
Regardlessofwhicheditingrouteyouchoosetogo,justrememberthat<br />
everythingrequirespatienceandtime.Nogreateditorbecameoneover<br />
night.Readarticles,watchtutorials,andpracticeasmuchasyoucan.<br />
Justaswithanythingelseyoutrytomaster,practicemakesperfect.<br />
Choosingwhichsoftwaretouseisamaterofpreferenceandyour<br />
personalneedsforit.<br />
But,alinal,Lightroom isaverygoodchoiceforthosewhowantaneasy<br />
tolearnsoftware.

<strong>Photography</strong>isalaboutfailure.Everytimeyouclicktheshuter,thereis<br />
lessthan1% chancethatyouwilmakeaninterestingshot.Themajority<br />
ofthetime,youmightshootanentireday,notgetasinglegoodshot,<br />
andfeeldisappointedandfrustrated.<br />
Knowthatfailureisagoodthing.Themoreyoufail,themorelikelyyou<br />
aretosucceed.AsThomasEdisononcesaid:“Ifyouwanttoincrease<br />
yoursuccessrate,doubleyourfailurerate.”<br />
WhenIhavemycamerawithme,themoreopportunitiesIsee.Luckisn’t<br />
somemagicalthingthathitsuslikelightning.Howeverluckfavoursthe<br />
prepared.Bepreparedbyalwayshavingyourcamerawithyou,always<br />
observingyourscenesandenvironment,andknowthateveryonceina<br />
while,youwilbeatthe“rightplaceattherighttime.”Ifyou’re<br />
comfortablewithyourcameraandskiledenough,youwilalsoclickthe<br />
shuterattherightmoment.
Whenyoufailtogettheshot,don’tbecomediscouraged.Rather,learn<br />
from yourfailuresandmistakes.<br />
Whatcausedyoutomisstheshot?Wasitbecauseyourcamerawasn’t<br />
setupproperly?Wasitbecauseyourcamerawasinyourbag(andnotin<br />
yourhand)?Wasitbecauseyouweretoonervousanddidn’thavethe<br />
couragetoclicktheshuter?Learnfrom yourfailures,andthecloseryou<br />
wilbecometomasteringyourphotography.
ChaseTheLight<br />

Don’tseeyourselfasaphotographer,butaspainterusingacameraas<br />
yourbrush.<br />
Asarule,alwaysfolowthelight.Whenyou’reoutshootingonthe<br />
streets,trytofindareaswithdramaticcontrastbetweentheshadowsand<br />
light.Ifyoushootduringthemiddleoftheday,youcanadjustyour<br />
camerato-2exposurecompensationtogetverydarkshadows,and<br />
wel-exposedhighlights.<br />
Inpost-processing,youcanalso“crushtheblacks”bydraggingthe<br />
“black”slidertomakeevenmorecontrastyblackandwhiteimages.<br />
OnethingIhavediscoveredisthatblackandwhitelooksgood<br />
regardlessoflightingsituations.Howevercolorphotographslookrealy<br />
badwhenshotinpoorlight.
Whatyoucanalsododuringthedaywhenthelightisn’tgood,isto<br />
usethattimetoscoutlocations.Ifyoufindastreetcornerthatyoufind<br />
mightbeinteresting,re-visititwhenthesunstartstoset,andthen<br />
parkyourselfonthatcorner,andworkthescene.<br />
Lightturnstheordinaryintothemagical.Ascenewithoutgoodlight<br />
canbeboring.Ascenewithgreatlightbecomessomething<br />
otherworldly.<br />
Ifyou’reshootingatsunset,folowthelight.Asthesunstartstoset,<br />
youwilnoticetheraysoflightwilshiftandmove.Justfolowthe<br />
light.Whenthelightisgood,shootlikeamadman.
Improve1% EveryDay<br />
Itiseasytolookatabodyofworkbyanaccomplishedmaster<br />
photographerandfeelthatnomaterhowhardwework,wecannever<br />
achieveasmuchasthatphotographer.<br />
Thejourneyofathousandstepsbeginswiththefirststep.Ifyouwantto<br />
createabodyofworkinphotography,youneedtostartofwithasingle<br />
photograph.Ifyouwanttoimproveyourphotography,justaim to<br />
becomeaslightlybeterphotographereveryday.Aim toimproveyour<br />
photographyby1% everyday.Youcanimproveyourphotographyby<br />
takingmorephotos,studyingmasterphotographers,oranalyzing<br />
photographybooks.<br />
Byimproving1% everyday,youwilseehugecompoundedinterestover<br />
thecourseofayear.

Howitbegan,byJoyPorter<br />
StepsofFaithtookmehalfwayaroundtheworldandafter36hoursof<br />
travel,IwalkeduptheporchstepsandenteredBugembeMiracleCenter.<br />
Theresidenceof63kidsfrom ElShaddaiChildren’sHomeinBugembe,<br />
Uganda(Africa).Theonethatcaughtmyatentionimmediatelywasthis<br />
youngmanwhowasonstagedancingwithajoythatfiledtheroom and<br />
tookmybreatheaway–itiswhatwestilcaltothisday,“indescribable.”<br />
HisnameisPraiseBenonLumoli.Weknowthatfrom aspiritual<br />
standpoint,Godbroughtustogetherforapurpose.Iwasthereasa<br />
missionsteam memberspecificalytocapturethestoryaboutour<br />
partnershipthatstartedbackin2006.IhadnoideathatIwasthereto<br />
create“ourstory”andovertheyears,aMother-Sonrelationshipbeganon<br />
thatfirsttrip.I’m sohumbledbythiskidandhisabilitytolove,receive<br />
loveandtogivelovetoalthosehemeets.Heisaspecialyoungman,<br />
humbleandhasabusinessmindthatamazesmeforhisage.Intheweeks<br />
thatfolowedmyfirsttriptoUganda,Praisebecameveryinquisitive<br />
aboutmyphotographyequipment.<br />
Inthebeginning,hewasnervousaboutapproachingmetoaskquestions<br />
aboutmygear.Hisconfidenceandfreedom remindedmeofoneofthose<br />
“cool”kidsinhighschoolandIwiladmitIwasalitleintimatedaswel<br />
byhim.Welaughaboutthisnowaswewerebothdrawntooneanother.
IlearnedPraisewaspassionateforVideography/<strong>Photography</strong>andhis<br />
desiretogointothisfieldafterhefinishedsecondaryschool.Hewas<br />
waitingtostartcolegeuntiltheresourcesweremadeavailable.After18<br />
months,hewasreadytobeginatProlineFilm AcademyinKampala,<br />
Uganda.<br />
Overthepasttwoyears,wehadbecomeveryclose–talkingalmost<br />
everydaythroughsocialmedia(WhatsApp& Facebook).
PraisehadcometoElShaddaiChildrenshomewhenhewasabout5<br />
yearsoldandthroughourpartnership,heandhis63siblingshave<br />
receivedfoodandclothingaswelasaneducationthatcontinuestothis<br />
day.But,whatIwilshareiswe’vemade16tripstoUgandasince2006<br />
becausealthoughtheselifegivinggiftshaveimpactedalofus,it’sthe<br />
relationshipsthathavepenetratedourhearts.Theseyoungkidsembody<br />
HOPEforthenextgenerationofUgandans.Personaly,I’vemade5of<br />
thosetripsinthepasttwoandahalfyears.Ugandaanditspeoplehave<br />
capturedmysoul.<br />
PraisewantedtoatendcolegeandtakephotographycoursesatProline<br />
Film Academy,buttherewereobstacles.Wekeepinclosetouchviasocial<br />
media,andIquicklylearnedthatPraiseneededalaptoptoenrolinthis<br />
advancedcolegephotographycourse.<br />
Thereality,thereare63kidsattheorphanage,andtheythemselvescan’t<br />
afordtobuylaptops,letalonephotographyequipmentfortheircareers.
Inearly2018,Icameupwithanideaanddecidedtousemyphotography<br />
tocreateaneventtohelpfurthertheeducationandvocationalneedsof<br />
ourkidsthroughaneventcaled,“HeadshotswithaPurpose.”Praisewas<br />
oneoffourofourkidswhobenefitedfrom thisfirstfundraisingevent<br />
whichraisedover$18,000.<br />
Duringthistime,Ialsoreachedouttomanyprofessionalsinourindustry<br />
–TanyaPuntiwasoneofthem.Tanya’sonlinecoursesaresowel<br />
craftedthatIfeltherD<strong>SLR</strong>DigitalSchoolwouldbeanassettotwoofour<br />
boysgoingintoourfieldandshegraciouslygiftedthesetwoyoung<br />
Ugandansalifetimemembershiptoherschool.<br />
Lastsummer,IreturnedtoUgandaforthreeweekstofurthermentor<br />
PraiseandhisbrotherChris.Iwasabletobringthroughthegenerous<br />
supportoffamily,friendsandcoleagues,fourlaptopcomputers,twoful<br />
camerakits,memorycards,additionalbateriesandthefulediting<br />
softwareforPhotoshop& Lightroom.<br />
Forthreeweeks,“Westartedwiththebasics.”Onedayshooting,one-day<br />
editing,anotherdayculingandmarketingontheirFacebookpages,and<br />
soon.We’dgooutandfindpeopleonthestreets,teachingtheboystobe<br />
boldandasktoshootphotos.Itwasgetingtheboysoutoftheirheads,<br />
intotheirhearts,andgivingthem thetoolstodowhattheylove.”<br />

Howdidyoufirstbecomeinterestedinphotography?<br />
IfirstgotinterestedinphotographythetimeIstartedviewingthingsina<br />
diferentway.Iwasn’tjustlookingatthem butIwasalwaysseeingand<br />
startedlovingeverythingaboutthem.Thesethingswerethemomentsof<br />
peopleanddiferentcreaturesIsawaroundme.Ifeltinmyselfeveryday<br />
thatatleasttherewouldbeawayouttohavethem lookmorereflecting<br />
thanjustamerelook.
Whatorwhoinspiresyou?<br />
Iwasinspiredbymypastlife–aroughbeginningbecauseIknewinside<br />
ofmethatifonedayIhadacamera,itwouldbecomemoreeasierto<br />
showofmyworkandbeabletomeetmyneedsthroughthe<br />
photography.Todayam inspiredbyMom,whoisaphotographertoo.
Howhasourphotographycoursehelpedyou?<br />
I'vebeenabletomeetsomeofmyneedsbecauseI’m nowgetinghired<br />
tophotographondiferenteventsandindividualstoounlikewhenIhad<br />
noopportunitywithoutmygear.<br />
Thisphotographycoursehasalsogivenmeachancetoseetheworldina<br />
diferentartisticalycoolwaybecauseeverytimeIwalkaround,myeyes<br />
walkthrougheverythingseeingthingsinabeautifulwaythatamazesme.<br />
Iam abletoappreciatethebeautyaroundmethroughphotography.<br />
Then,tolearneditingstylesandcreativewaysofpresentingmyfinal<br />
imagesissetingmeapartfrom othersdoingphotographyinmyregion.<br />

What’syourmostmemorablemoment?<br />
Mybestmemorablemoment,wasthefirsttimeIgotmycamera.I<br />
couldn'tevenbelievethatthenextday,itwouldbeinmyhandstoshoot<br />
whatevercameacrossmyeyes.Thereareathousandwordstodescribe<br />
thatdayIfirstgotacamera,butaboveal,it'sjustaspecialdaytome<br />
that’sindescribable.
Yourfavouritelocation?<br />
It’salmostayearnowlearningphotography.I'veneverrealydonethe<br />
kindofphotographythatIwant,inthebestlocationsIneed,becauseof<br />
mytightscheduleswithschool.<br />
Ilovestudiolighting.SomedaywhenIhavemyownstudio,Iwould<br />
specializemoreintothatarea.Butam stilamazedwithhowpeople<br />
appreciatethephotographyIdocurently.Thatkeepsmegoing.
Whatplansdoyouhaveforthefutureofyourphotography?<br />
Iwanttobeacommercialphotographerinfuture,businesswise.Iwant<br />
tostartupaphotographyschoolinmyhometown/vilage.Ialsowantto<br />
dealinselingphotographyequipment,becauseIrealizedthatinmy<br />
hometown,noonedoesthat,andmostoftheequipmentarefrom long<br />
distancesoutofourtown.
What’syourbestpieceofadviceforotherssofar?<br />
Iwouldaskthem tostickontheirdreamsandkeepchasingthem.I've<br />
seenthatworkinmylifebecauseIalsocan'tbelieveI'veappearedinthis<br />
magazinethisyear.Ineverexpectedthat.Iam sohumbledandexcited.<br />
