FROM THE CHAIRMAN 

On behalf of the Board of Directors, we 

welcome you to the second summer edition 

of Focus. Time really does fly by when you’re 

having fun. I’m delighted to say that 2018 

has been another successful year with plenty 

going on and continuous growth. We’ve seen 

an increase in membership, a clear illustration 

Wests Group Macarthur continues to be the 

community’s clubs of choice. 

Activities across all areas of business and venues have increased 

dramatically over the past few years and to keep up with our growing 

membership base there are a variety of developments and upgrades 

occurring across the Group. We are delighted to introduce to you 

The Hub Kitchen & Bar, which replaces Bambu Asian Restaurant. 

This new dining and entertainment experience at Wests League Club 

will appeal to all food lovers with a variety of cuisines on offer in the 

one location. 

Renovations at the Country Club continue to take place, and we 

are starting to see our exciting New Destination taking shape. We 

wish to thank our members and guests for their continued patience 

– we’re confident the improvements will be well worth the wait. 

Integrating the old Club to the new infrastructure whilst keeping 

the Club open has certainly had its challenges. Fortunately, most of 

that is now behind us, with a brand new 4.5m x 2.5m LED sports 

screen, new bar and coffee shop, kids playground and new kitchen all 

scheduled to be completed by early next year. We are really excited by 

what these new facilities shall offer our members and guests. 

Of primary importance to us as part of our commitment to the 

community is helping those in need, especially around the festive 

season. We were honoured to partner with Big Yellow Umbrella 

for our Christmas Giving Tree Appeal for 2018 and assist local 

Macarthur families. Thank you to all members, guests and staff who 

donated a Christmas gift this year – we are sure your generosity and 

kindness goes a long way to those less fortunate. 

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Board, 

management, staff and members on their efforts during 2018 within 

our Clubs and throughout the local Macarthur region. Without their 

dedication and support, the Group would not be as successful as it is 

today. On behalf of the Board, I hope everyone has a merry and safe 

Christmas season with family and friends. 

In the coming year, Wests Group Macarthur will continue to 

provide superior customer service and quality facilities for members 

and guests and we thank you for your patronage. We look forward to 

what’s to come in 2019 and beyond.

FROM THE CEO 

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you 

to the second summer edition of the Club’s 

Journal, Focus. It’s been an exciting year for 

us so far, not least because Wests Group 

Macarthur has proudly given $1,785,412.26 

via ClubGRANTS Categories 1 and 2 

in support of the local community and 

sporting organisations. 

At Wests, we’re continually finding ways 

to improve our facilities, making every visit as smooth and enjoyable 

as possible for our members. Which is the reason why we bring 

you The Hub Kitchen & Bar; an amazing new modern offering for 

you all to enjoy. We understand that people expect clubs to offer 

something more than what has been offered in the past and we 

believe The Hub does exactly that with the unique ability to mix it 

up and share different cuisines and beverages at the one table with 

friends and family. Not to mention the quality furnishings and 

greenery throughout the new space. 

Sydney recently hosted the successful and inspiring Invictus Games 

for 2018. We were honoured to recently present new equipment to 

local Macarthur-based Invictus athlete and hero, Garry Robinson 

who was wounded in Afghanistan in 2010. It certainly is a nice 

feeling knowing that we were able to assist his sporting and personal 

goals. Garry received a Silver Medal in the 100m Freestyle Swimming 

and a Silver Medal in the Team Compound Archery event. We look 

forward to seeing amazing results from Garry in the Invictus Games 

as he continues to inspire others to focus on what they CAN achieve. 

In other exciting news, we received approval from Liquor & 

Gaming NSW to build our fifth Registered Club last month. This 

is every exciting after three years in the process. This Club will be 

called The Greens and is located on the property which used to be 

called El Caballo Blanco on Camden Valley Way. The facility will 

incorporate a Greg Norman Signature Golf Course being a nine 

hole course with a very exciting driving range. This driving range 

is based around having drinks and food with friends – a similar set 

up to a bowling alley but hitting golf balls at targets. Finally, we 

are very close to lodging a DA with Council to build a restaurant 

extension at Lakeside Golf Club Camden which will provide 

approximately 150 additional seats. We see this as a project that 

we would like to complete next year as we can see the increasing 

demand and the people moving into the area. I’m excited to work 

closely with staff and management to deliver the Board’s vision for 

the future of Wests Group Macarthur. 2019 is shaping up to be a 

very busy year.

Gledswood Hills 

After years in the planning, we are very excited to announce that we are now 

much closer to building this facility on what used to be the El Caballo Blanco site. 

The Greens Gledswood Hills is the Wests 

Group Macarthur’s latest development 

and will be located on Camden Valley 

Way, Gledswood Hills. We have had a 

Development Approval to construct the 

clubhouse for seven months now but in 

November, we received approval for our 

fifth Registered Club Licence. 

The Greens is proposed as a place of 

social entertainment and leisure with a 

state of the art golf facility available to 

all members and guests, accompanied 

by a boutique dining offering, sports 

bar, outdoor terrace and first-class 

Club facilities. 

It’s the first of its kind in Sydney and will 

be right at your door step, positioned with 

amazing views of the driving range and golf 

course. Once complete, the offering will 

include a Greg Norman designed quality 

short nine-hole golf course with an exciting 

driving range. Wests Group Macarthur 

CEO, Tony Mathew tries to explain to 

people “that this driving range is like 

combining a bowling alley with the target 

of archery in a relaxed environment. Enjoy 

perhaps a bucket of beers with friends and 

a platter of food and let the games begin!

The Greens will offer an abundance of 

new facilities to indulge in comprising of 

a dining offering, with a focus on organic 

ingredients to share, sports lounge complete

There will also be a selection of craft 

boutique and international beers, ciders, 

wines and premium spirits. 

With approval in place, the next stage 

is to finalise design issues, cost it and then 

appoint a builder. Work for this venue will 

commence soon and we are very excited for 

what’s to come in the near future.

Parma for 

A FARMER 

Wests Group Macarthur were proud to support the 

Parma for a Farmer campaign in August by donating $9,500 

to drought-affected farmers through 'Buy a Bale'. 

Wests Group Macarthur is excited to 

announce the result of our month-long 

Parma for a Farmer August campaign to 

support NSW farmers through this extended 

drought. The aim was to raise enough money 

to purchase a full semi-trailer load of hay to 

help struggling farmers in NSW. We are so 

pleased to announce that it was a big month 

for Parmis and Schnitzels across Wests Group 

Macarthur venues with $9,500 raised to 

successfully purchase a full semi-trailer load of 

hay through Buy a Bale. 

For the entire month of August Wests 

donated $1 from every Chicken Parmigiana 

and Chicken Schnitzel purchased at Wests 

venues, with our Chefs [pictured top left] 

delighted to cook up to nearly 10,000 

schnitzels in August. Our members and 

guests supported the campaign, with many 

of our sporting groups, local businesses and 

family groups coming together for a Parmi 

night. The community spirit and willingness 

to show practical support to NSW farmers 

was heart-warming and certainly a reflection 

of the community spirit here in Macarthur. 

We thank everyone for their support. 

Our semi-trailer load of Hay is on its 

way to one of the drought-stricken regions 

of NSW via the Buy a Bale network. Buy 

a Bale is supplying emergency feed for 

livestock in the worst affected droughtstricken 

areas of Australia. Farmers are 

having to truck food and water in from 

interstate to save their cattle, sheep and 

horses. One semi-trailer load of Hay can 

cost up to $10,000, a significant amount 

of money for struggling farmers who 

are not generating an income. Wests 

Group Macarthur CEO, Tony Mathew 

said, “We hope this semi-trailer load of 

hay relieves some stress for a few of our 

drought-affected NSW farmers and lets 

them know that we see their struggle, 

we care, and we want to help in a 

practical way”.

School to work 

GRADUATION 

Wests League Club along with the NRL and Wests Tigers were 

honoured to host the NRL’s School to Work Graduating Class of 2108 for 

a celebration dinner with their families and mentors in September. 

The dinner, hosted at Wests League Club, was 

an opportunity for Wests Group Macarthur to 

show our support for the program and extend 

our congratulations to the 22 local Year Twelve 

Program graduates who were about to complete 

their HSC exams in Macarthur region. The 

NRL School to Work Program is designed to 

support Indigenous students in Year 11 and 

12 prepare for their transition from school on 

to work or tertiary education. This is achieved 

through fortnightly mentoring sessions with 

the students, where they can discuss their 

aspirations and workshop which pathways may 

be available to them. The program Mentors 

also support them with goal setting, creating 

resumes and cover letters, applying for jobs and

applying for University or Tafe courses. 

The unique part of the program and the 

reason it is so successful is that the program 

continues 6 months post school to help 

ensure that students still have a support 

person who will help them adjust to their new 

norm, whether it’s helping access tutoring 

at University, or giving professional advice 

about responding to unfamiliar situations in 

their new workplace. This part of the program 

ensures that students remain focused on their 

goals and aspirations and can develop their 

ability to adapt to change. 

The program in the Macarthur area is 

heavily supported by the Wests Tigers, and 

Wests Group Macarthur have offered our 

ongoing support for the annual graduation 

dinner. Former Wests Tigers player John 

Skandalis was in attendance and shared 

some of his life and career experiences. 

The students were acknowledged for 

their achievements so far and reminded 

that they will still have the support of the 

School to Work program next year. Wests 

Group Macarthur CEO, Tony Mathew said 

“Wests League Club wishes to acknowledge 

the commitment these 22 students have 

made to the NRL’s School to Work program 

and the positive contribution they will make 

to the Macarthur community by continuing 

to strive for their individual education and 

career goals.”

Wests Group Macarthur were honoured to recently present new 

equipment to local Macarthur based Invictus Athlete and hero, 

Garry Robinson who was wounded in Afghanistan in 2010.

which took place on 

Friday 23 November. 

Given that Campbelltown 

LGA has the 2nd highest 

rate of Domestic Violence 

in Sydney, we were 

absolutely committed 

to this cause. 

Garry Robinson was in a Blackhawk Helicopter 

that crashed on its way to a job in 2010, sustaining 

a severe traumatic brain injury and fracturing 

multiple bones including his lower spine, sacrum, 

eight ribs, both shoulder blades and his left leg, 

which was later amputated below the knee. Garry 

had a lot of internal bleeding and had to have 

his spleen removed along with experiencing a 

punctured lung. He 

was in an induced 

coma for four weeks 

while his body healed, 

and he spent two 

years in hospital 

rehabilitating from 

the brain injury. 

Garry has 

competed in the 

Invictus Games in 

London in 2014, 

Orlando in 2016 

and Toronto in 

2017. He will be competing in cycling, archery 

and swimming in the 2018 Invictus games here 

in Australia. 

The Invictus Games have made a huge 

difference to Garry’s recovery. Suffering from 

PTSD, anxiety and depression, some days there 

seemed no reason to even get out of bed. Invictus 

Games has given Garry a positive focus and a new 

perspective on what he can achieve despite his 

permanent injuries. Garry’s sporting equipment 

needs have changed overtime and he needed some 

expensive equipment to allow him to be successful 

on his sporting journey. 

ClubsNSW is a sponsor of the Invictus Games 

and Wests Group Macarthur were presented with 

an opportunity to help our own local Invictus 

Athlete Garry 

Robinson with 

the purchase of 

this new archery 

equipment. We 

were honoured and 

delighted to be able 

to assist Garry to 

achieve his sporting 

and personal goals 

by purchasing a 

new Scope, new 

Arrows and an 

Arrow Rest to 

suit Garry’s specifications. Garry received a Silver 

Medal in the 100m Freestyle Swimming and a 

Silver Medal in the Team Compound Archery 

event. We know that this equipment will support 

Garry’s training and competitiveness in Archery 

and we look forward to seeing amazing results 

from Garry as he continues to inspire others to 

focus on what they CAN achieve.

Green and growing from within 

After Lakeside Golf Course renovations, our course is now back in the top 100 

public golf courses in Australia, all thanks to our Greenkeepers. Amongst the 

Wests Group Macarthur team at Lakeside are our apprentice Greenkeepers, 

Bradley Murray and Andrew Robinson who joined our team in 2016. 

Despite being in the middle of ongoing 

renovations, Brad and Andrew saw this as 

an opportunity to develop new skills and 

learn from our qualified team of professional 

greenkeepers and ensure all works continued 

without a hitch. 

Brad and Andrew are both undertaking 

a Certificate III Course in Sports Turf 

Management at Ryde Tafe; one of the largest 

horticultural training centres in the world, 

set on 25 acres with a full-sized cricket pitch, 

golf green and a bowling green. The Course 

is a four-year Certificate with weekly Tafe 

visits and on the job practical experience – 

with two years already done, the apprentices 

are looking forward to their final two years 

to continually advance their skills, meet likeminded 

peers and apply their experience to 

develop our Lakeside Golf Course. 

The recent Tafe studies for Brad 

and Andrew included the operation 

of machinery, contributing to WHS, 

implementing and maintaining turf grass 

areas and learning about different soil 

profiles. Brad explains “the best parts of 

the job are learning a trade, operating 

machinery, working outdoors and the 

golf course in general”, for Andrew it is 

the “working outdoors, the hours of work, 

and it’s the type of work I like the most.” 

Although both apprentices commence their 

days at dawn, they don’t let that stop them 

from enjoying the opportunity to learn from 

and grow a career in the Macarthur area at 

our Club. The early mornings can be tough, 

but the sunrises take the cake. 

Golf Course Superintendent, Dean 

Hopper states how well the two young 

apprentices fit in with the team, always 

curious to ask questions and give everything 

a go. Dean tries to mix the days up in 

different areas to ensure both Brad and 

Andrew are gaining an expansive knowledge 

base in the art of greenkeeping. Dean 

highlights the apprentice’s commitment to 

their job, always having fun and enjoying 

plenty of laughter along the way, making 

each day a great experience for all our 

greenkeepers and golfers. 

We take our hats off to our greenkeepers 

who continue to each day care for over 40 

hectares of ground, whether it -2 degrees in 

winter, +45 degrees in summer, 50km winds 

or sideways rain!

JEANS FOR GENES DAY 

Our wonderful staff got behind Jeans for Genes 

Day (bottom left) and wore their jeans to help 

raise awareness and funds for the Children’s 

Medical Research Institute. We raised just short 

of $700 – it sure is a nice feeling knowing that 

we are helping make a difference! 

R U OK DAY 

On Thursday 13th September, we supported 

R U OK Day to help raise awareness about 

suicide prevention. Our staff were asked to 

wear a yellow t-shirt (top left) and encouraged 

to start a conversation with their fellow staff 

mates, members and guests. 

25 YEARS OF SERVICE REACHED 

Congratulations to Sonia (pictured, right) for 

reaching 25 years of service to Wests Group 

Macarthur on October 11. Well done Sonia, 

and we thank you for the commitment and 

service you’ve show our members and team 

over the past 25 years. 

SUPPORTING MOVEMBER 

Our staff jumped on board to support 

Movember and help raise awareness for men’s 

health including prostate cancer, testicular 

cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. 

You may have seen our Bar & Catering Staff 

looking fabulous in moustache aprons! Our 

Food & Beverage Manager, Simon McNamara, 

also volunteered to be our Mo Bro for 2018 

and shaved off his ‘mo’ at the end of November 

in order to raise funds for the Movember 

Foundation. Well done Simon. Be sure to

announce the total amount raised for this 

important cause. 

VIVA LAS VEGAS 

At the end of August, 13 staff members, 

inclusive of Senior Managers, Duty Managers 

and Floor Staff jetted off to Las Vegas, Nevada 

after being awarded the most prestigious 

award of our Staff Rewards Program, BRAVO 

(pictured, centre). 

The annual award winners are chosen 

for their outstanding performance and 

commitment to Wests Group Macarthur 

throughout the year, demonstrating consistent 

behaviour that reflects our values and excelling 

beyond expected levels of performance. We 

hope the deserving winners for 2018 enjoyed 

their exceptional sponsored trip overseas to the 

USA and returned with new ideas and fond 

memories. This trip is just another reason why 

we are recognised as an employer of choice.

guests looking to tie the knot. Held in the Lakeside Centre, surrounded by

The day allowed guests to meet and chat

AWARD WINNERS 

The Wests Sports Council is a network of all sporting Clubs and Associations 

with whom Wests Group Macarthur has established a supportive relationship. 

Here we celebrate and showcase two recent winners, Brayden and Cody. 

JUNIOR SPORTSPERSON 

Brayden Brook – Wests Hockey Club 

Brayden Brook, member of Wests Hockey 

Club, is a 10 year old with huge potential. 

With big expectations on his shoulders he has 

handled the demands of others with a growing 

maturity as the season progressed. This was 

evident in his constant encouragement of 

his fellow U11 players during training and 

every game this year. Brayden will then back 

up the U11’s game with an U13’s match, 

playing with with equal commitment to 

the team, often still red in the face from the 

previous game. 

Brayden has always played back-to-back 

age group competitions on the hockey field. 

In September this culminated in the Grand 

Final for U11A’s then straight to the U13 

Junior Grand Final. That kind of focus 

and determination is rare in a 10 year old 

and should be recognised and encouraged. 

Brayden just loves his hockey and every spare 

moment he can be seen with a hockey stick 

and ball in his hand. 

If this achievement is not enough, Brayden 

played at Representative level in the NSW 

State Hockey Championships in both the 

U11 and U13 competitions. Somehow 

around the commitments of local Club and 

Representative training and games, Brayden

is also involved in athletics, swimming and 

Nippers. Brayden is definitely a rising star 

of the future and has been acknowledged by 

Wests Sports Council with the September 

Junior Sportsperson Award. 

YOUTH SPORTSPERSON 

Cody Salter – Macarthur Triathlon Club 

Macarthur Triathlon Club’s Cody Salter 

has been named as Wests Sports Council’s 

Youth Sportsperson for September. Cody 

recently achieved some amazing results 

in the 2018 Wests Macarthur Duathlon 

Championship, securing second Outright 

position. Cody sat in the top three all day, 

running shoulder to shoulder with the 

eventual podium finishers of the opening 

4km run. A hard, fast effort saw him 

start the 20km bike in second. Despite 

being the youngest in the race Cody held 

his own over the 20km ride to establish 

himself clearly in second position. At 

the conclusion of the bike, Cody was 

approximately two minutes down from 

the eventual leader (some 10-15 years his 

senior). He recovered time over the final 

2km for a great final result. 

Cody then finished off the final duathlon 

of the season, the 2018 Macarthur Duathlon 

Series Round Eight, with a dominant display 

leading from the gun. Cody’s time over the 

4km run/20km bike/2km run course was his 

fastest of the season, nearly a minute faster 

than he had been in the championship race a 

fortnight earlier. He finished in first position. 

After a strong domestic duathlon season 

during the qualification period Cody was 

selected by Triathlon Australia to compete 

in the 16-19 Age-Group Duathlon 

World Championship. After his strongest 

triathlon season to date, Triathlon Australia 

subsequently upgraded Cody to race in the 

elite Junior Duathlon World Championship 

as the sole Australian representative. This was 

Cody’s first time in the green and gold and he 

joins only Natalie Van Coevorden and Erin 

Densham as Macarthur locals to be selected 

for an Australian elite team. 

On race day Cody raced hard over the 

initial 5km run. The first part of the race was 

hard but Cody put in a strong effort. Riding 

solo over the 20km ride Cody went as hard as 

he could to set himself up for the final 2.5km 

run. 7th in his debut World Championship 

was a fantastic achievement. 

Cody is a member of the Triathlon 

NSW Emerging Talent Squad which is the 

second-tier high performance programme 

in NSW. Amazing results and commitment 

from Cody, he is doing Macarthur proud!

GOLF FOR GIRLS 

School Holiday Program 

Lakeside’s popular Golf for Girls School Holiday Program continues to attract girls 

from the Macarthur region and beyond with another successful program completed. 

A group of enthusiastic 20 girls ages 7-14 

spent a full day receiving mentoring from 

our Lakeside Ladies Golfers. The winter sun 

was shining, and the Golf for Girls enjoyed a 

perfect day out on the beautiful Lakeside Golf 

Course in Gledswood Hills. 

The girls had a fantastic day learning basic 

skills, improving their existing skills and learning 

golfing etiquette. The program has a social 

atmosphere encouraging the girls to engage with 

others who have the same interest in golf. There 

were lots of smiling faces and quite a few new 

friendships were formed on the day. 

11-year-old Rhiaana Gascoine has 

attended four of Lakeside’s school holiday 

programs and loves the opportunity to 

improve her golf in such a fun environment. 

Rhiaana’s passion for golf started with her 

family; “my Dad and Grand Dad play” 

she said and now “I love it”. Many of the 

girls who attend the Golf for Girls School 

Holiday Programs go on to extend their 

skills and knowledge in the Saturday 

afternoon clinics at Lakeside Golf Course. 

Rhiaana also attends the Saturday afternoon 

program. She loves this opportunity for 

more intensive coaching; “I learn how to 

hit the ball properly, fix divots, Jeff is great”. 

The Saturday afternoon golf clinics are run 

by professional, Jeff Mansfield. 

Many of the Golfing Girls parents took the 

opportunity to enjoy the sunshine and the 

facilities at Lakeside Golf Course Camden, 

whilst watching the girls improve their 

golf. Mum Lea Huston said the program 

was “absolutely fantastic” for her daughter 

who enjoys playing golf with her Dad and 

siblings. The girls all enjoyed the day and left 

with improved skills and new friends. 

With the support of the Wests Group 

Macarthur of clubs and Lakeside 

Management, the Lakeside Ladies will 

continue to a provide a safe and fun 

environment for girls to foster their love 

of golf during future School Holidays.
