E L E VATION PROFILE
Physiography of the
Everest Region
Trekking in Nepal
Before you start you trek you need to arrive
Kathmandu which is elevated at 1400 meter. Which is
the lowest elevation you are going to be while on this
trek? On the other day, you will be at Lukla which is
elevated at 2,860 meters. There will be no major
difference in air pressure, but the air around here
can be cold compared to Kathmandu.
You will be taking a flight to Lukla and from there
you will be hiking to Phakding which is elevated at
2,610 meters. The climate will be the same as in
Lukla. The very next day you will be hiking to
Namche bazar gaining an elevation of about 700 to
800 meters. Namche Bazar is elevated at 3440
meters. The air will be thinner but there will not be
any difficulties while breathing.
The elevation will keep increasing until you reach the
Base Camp. Once you are at Namche Bazar you will
get acclimatization day. It will help you adjust with
the elevation minimizing any risk on higher altitude.
On the next day, you will be hiking to Tengboche
gaining an altitude of 400-500 meters. Tengboche is
elevated at an altitude of 3,860 meters.
Your next destination will be Dingboche which is
elevated at an altitude of 4,410 meters. You will be
gaining about 600-700 meters of altitude. Once you
are above 4000 meters you again need
to adjust to the environment so that you can
get to higher altitude easily. You will get
acclimatization day on Dingboche.
After acclimatization day there will always be
less elevation to gain so that it helps you adjust
with the air more precisely. From Dingboche,
you will be going upward towards Lobuche
which is elevated at 4,940 meters. It means you
will only gain about 400 meters of elevation.
From here you need to gain about 400 meters
of elevation to reach base camp. Since the
climate will be a lot colder in base camp, so we
have minimized the altitude you need to gain.
It makes the trek more effective and decreases
any kind of issues which will help minimize any
casualties.
Once you reach Everest base camp we will
return to Gorakshep for the night stay. The
next day you will hike to Kalapatthar which is
elevated higher compared to base camp. You
will be gaining about 500 meters elevation to
reach Kalapatthar. Then you will be returning
to Pheriche which is elevated at 4,731 meters.
Starting from this day you will be descending
downhill which means you will start going
towards lower altitude.

We travel not
to escape life,
but for life not
to escape us.

September – October: Clear days are
Best Time For
Everest Trekking
The best answer to when to go to Everest Base
Camp is, "Whenever you are ready". The Everest
region has something unique to offer just
about every month.
Traditionally you will find late September,
October and November will provide better
views of the mountains, less heat haze, cloud
and clearer views of these world class
can be spectacular. This is not
mountains
the case but the trend usually follows
always
pattern. The weather can be crisp, but
this
as you make your way up to the Everest
clear
Camp.
Base
February – The spring months are
May:
the most popular in the region as a
probably
You might be caught in the occasional
whole.
showers if you catch the end of the
snow
Wherever you go, no
matter what the weather,
always bring your own
sunshine - Anthony J.
D'Angelo
winter season, but the weather should be
largely stable and dry – perfect for trekking and
high altitude climbing.
characteristic of this popular trekking period.
The ideal weather comes at a price as the
Although colder days (and colder nights) are
routes during this time will be at their busiest.
to be expected, this is a small price to pay for
the wonderful vistas and perfect views of the
regions peaks. The odd snowstorm has been
known to hit the region during this time so
be sure to pack correctly!
November – January: The region during this
period can best be described as being very
cold but still able to be trekked. The days will
be shorter and there is a lot more snow, thus
routes that involve crossing big passes like
the three passes trek are usually closed. The
weather will be fairly stable and dry,
meaning it is entirely possible to trek the
classic roite to Everest Base Camp in these
months. Expect temperatures as cold as
-30°C at night higher up the route so be sure
to bring the correct gear.

A PRACTICAL
GUIDE FOR
EVEREST TRAVEL
WHAT TO EXPECT ON A TREK?
Accommodation in Everest
The Everest Base Camp Trek is one of
the most popular trekking routes. As
such you will not have to worry about
accommodation along the trail. There are
lodges at least every hour along the main
route. Also in the lower sections, there is
a wide variety of lodges from the ones
that cost upwards of USD 200 per night
to ones that barely cost USD 20.
However, the service are not as you will
get in the city ares.
Rooms in Everest
Mostly you will find twin-basis
accommodation along the trails. There is
a single room, but they as well have twin
beds with some other furniture like a
small table or a chair. The size of the
room, quality, cleanliness, and
furnishing mostly differ in various tea
houses and lodges.
If you are planning your trip during peak
season, then be prepared for sharing
your room with other trekkers. All most
every tea house are packed with trekkers
and getting a single room is almost
impossible. But if want a single room you
should book your trip during seasons
while there are fewer trekkers around
trails. You can not even get room
sometime if you are not booked during
peak seasons and you may be forced to
sleep in dormitory styled rooms.

Foods and Beverage
You can find almost all western foods, but the
recipe may be different. It's suggested
sticking with traditional foods at tea houses.
These traditional foods are freshly made and
use traditional recipe and ingredients while
for the western foods most of the ingredients
are delivered and may not be as fresh. The
food although is hygienic and taste good.
During Everest Base Camp Trek, it is best for
you to avoid meat. The meat available here
is not hygienic and may be harmful to
consume. The meat is basically transported
from the lower elevation on the plane due to
which the meat available here at least 2 to 3
days old. Thus, keeping in mind to eat the
fresh and hygienic food you need to avoid
meat.
Electricity in Everest
Charging your camera and phones is also not a
problem along this route. However, there will be a
fee which goes up with the altitude. This is because
while lower down electricity is provided by hydroelectricity,
higher up they are all solar powered.
However, make sure to carry socket adapters for
Type C (circular pins) and spare batteries for your
cameras. Solar chargers and Power Banks help a
lot.
Toilets on Everest Trek
In tea houses located at high altitude, you will
find basic toilets and bathrooms with minimal
services to it. Most toilets at high altitude are
squat but at low altitude, you will be able to
find toilets and bathroom designed in
western styles.
You will also find some toilets like a hut with
some hole dug for littering. And the most
important thing is you need to carry toilet
paper by yourself. Most of the tea houses will
not be able to provide you with the toilet
paper so it's better to carry your own.
Internet in Everest
There are many ways to stay connected during the trek. However, a fair bit of warning is that none of
them will work the way you are used to at home. That said, wifi is available in just about every lodge
right up to Gorak Shep. They cost about Rs. 100 per hour lower down to Rs. 500 per hour higher up.
one of the Nepali Telecom Companies, NCell also has 3G service in the area around Everest Base
Camp. Everest Link, a local ISP, offers Wifi hotspots in just about every other place along the trail
including Kala Patthar.

Standard Trekking
Route
The route to Everest base camp follows
from Kathmandu to Lukla flight. From
Lukla, you will be hiking until you reach
base camp, but we will make the stop for
the overnight stay at various places. Most
routes are same if you are trekking to
Everest base camp, and some are long
because they make stop at more places
than the normal route. It’s all that you can
explore more if you are doing longer base
camp trekking.
Everts base camp trekking route follows
towards Namche bazar from Phakding, the
trail to Namche Bazar is truly amazing.
Namche Bazar is elevated at 3,440 Meter.
From here the route moves towards
Tengboche, where you can explore more
about Buddhist culture and Tengboche
Monastery. The next day we will hike to .
Dingboche, which is the beautiful
settlement where you can see beautiful
views of mountain peaks from tea
housesThen the route takes you to Lobuche
from Dingboche. It will be about 5 – 6
Hours of the hike from the Dingboche.
The route then returns to Gorakshep for
the overnight the next day the route will
follow towards Kalapatthar - from where
you can get the perfect picture of the
World's Highest Mountain and then to
Pheriche. The route from here is mostly
downhill. We will return to Namche from
Pheriche the next day and Namche to Lukla
on the other day. Then we fly back to
Kathmandu.
to travel is
to live.

THINGS TO BE CAREFUL
ABOUT IN THE EVEREST
REGION
In Himalayan Scenery Treks and
Expedition, your safety precedes every
other thing. As this adventure entrails
travelling in the remote mountainous
region, we are always at mercy of nature.
During the trip, the factors such as
weather, natural disaster or a multitude of
other factors which are beyond our control
can subsequently bring the changes in the
itinerary. Although all the itinerary we
provide to you is guided and standard;
please note that your team leader has the
authority to alter or even drop the planned
itinerary of any part if it is necessary due to
safety concern. All the alternations or
changes of the standard itinerary are made
by the leader by taking into consideration
the best interest of the whole group. Here
are some of the thing you need to be careful
while trekking in Everest Region
Flight Cancellations:
Tenzing Hillary Airport, also known as
Lukla Airport, is the small but busiest
airport situated on a wonderful valley
fenced by high mountains. This airport has
been carved into a mountain ridge and sites
by a perilous three-kilometres drop.
Because of the high location, the weather
around here erratic and is likely to be
changed in every few hours resulting in
flight delays and cancellation.
Twin Otter and Dornier planes are the only
the modes of transportation to and from
Lukla Airstrip. However, because of the
unpredictable weather of the high
mountain reason, there is always the risk of
flight cancellation or delays. In some cases,
the flights are delayed or cancelled for 2 or
more days. Due to the long delays in the
flight schedule, it may hinder your trip.
However, we Himalayan Scenery Treks and
Expedition, help you to charter helicopter
to or from the Lukla Airstrip, in case of
flight cancellation or delays due to harsh
and unpredictable mountain weather
condition. We will provide you with the best
service to make sure that you are on
schedule for your trip and international
flight connection.

Altitude sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness):
Altitude sickness often known as acute
mountain sickness (A.M.S.) in general may
occur when people ascend too quickly normally
in altitudes of over 3000 m. We ensure minimal
risk by building in rest days into our trekking
itineraries. Most people will feel some effect of
altitude, shortness of breath and possibly
light-headed, this is common. Acute mountain
sickness is very different and normally involves
a severe headache, sickness and loss of
awareness. In almost every potential case there
are enough warning signs to take appropriate
action. Basically, there are three stages of
altitude sickness and symptoms.
There are various phases for altitude sickness
and you must always remain aware of it. If you
think you cannot ascend anymore you should
immediately stop your ascending and return
for immediate medical attention.
Khumbu Cough:
As you go higher, you will cough that much
more and at times the coughing can get so
violent that it hurts like hell. The best way to
avoid the Khumbu Cough is to breathe
humidified air by using a mask of some sort. A
buff is great for this purpose and a
handkerchief will do just fine. Candies or
cough drops will help.

Make sure to ensure that for each
1,000 meter (~3,000 feet) climb after
the altitude of 2,500 meters, you stay
an extra night at the place for
acclimatization purposes. Skipping
this will increases your chances of
getting AMS and it sure isn’t a fun way
to end your trek. Usually, trekkers
stay 2 nights at Namche (3,440 meters)
and Pheriche (4,351
meters)/Dingboche (4,410 meters) for
acclimatization purpose. Make sure
you factor this in while planning your
trek duration. Flights from Lukla are
highly dependent on the weather.
Hence, it is normal for delays of a day
or two.
Hence do not plan too tight and have
some leg room when you buy
departure flights out of Kathmandu.
This will be especially important if you
are traveling during May-September.
How fit do I need to be to do the
Everest Base Camp Trek?
Most reasonably fit people should be
able to do the Everest Base Camp
Trek.No matter your fitness level, it is
a good idea to do some cardio
training. If feasible actual hiking
before the main trek will not only
break your shoes., but will also help
your lungs and heart.
Among many worthy climbs and worthier climbers, we will just mention two
names: George Mallory and Sir Edmund Hillary. Mallory is famous because he
possibly ‘did it’ while Hillary is famous because he ‘did it’ and much more. If you
are lost, ‘did it’ refers to the act of standing on the top of Everest here. While
Mallory was perhaps the first westerner to see the Khumbu, Hillary was the first
westerner to look after it. Even today the Sherpas revere Sir Hillary as a modernday
patron saint for his contributions in the area.
