Valuing diversity

Valuing diversity is one of the core values of

Tower Hamlets Council.

We at Idea Store Learning promote diversity

and equality in everything we do to improve the

quality of life for everyone living, working and

visiting Tower Hamlets. The borough’s diversity is

one of its greatest strengths and assets.

We will build upon this by working with the Tower

Hamlets Partnership to provide accessible and

responsive services that enable everyone to take

part in the social, cultural and economic wealth of

the borough. Achieving this is central to delivering

the council’s vision, is linked to our strategic plan

priorities and objectives, and forms a driving force

within the community plan and key to creating a

cohesive community.

Our aims and values

As a service provider we will:

• Promote equality of opportunity and eliminate

discrimination in the planning and delivery of

our services in terms of age, disability, ethnicity,

gender, sexual orientation, religion or belief,

health and income status

• Promote good relations between communities

and address negative stereotyping of any groups

• Ensure that all residents have equal opportunity

to participate in learning

• Challenge harassment relating to a person’s

age, disability, ethnicity, gender, sexual

orientation, religion or belief, health and

Working out how much you pay

You will find the total cost of

each course with the course

details in this guide. The course

fee is for the entire course. For

some courses there will be exam

fees and these are included in

the total price. These fees are

correct at time of printing but

occasionally they may change.

Courses have been grouped

into bands. Each band has a

set hourly rate. The hourly rate

has two categories, a standard

fee and a concessionary fee.

The hourly rate includes basic

material costs and specialist

equipment or facilities which we

need to use when teaching the

course to you.

The Idea Store Learning

Programme receives financial

support from the Education and

Skills Funding Agency and the

Greater London Authority. This

enables course fees to represent

good value and ensure access

for learners.

Course fees represent only

part of the cost of running our

programmes.

Band 4a is a further reduced fee

band to support you to enrol onto

an Adult Community Learning

class with pre-employability as a

focus.

instalments. You need to pay one

instalment when you enrol and

can pay by direct debit or postdated

cheque. If you withdraw

(leave) from the course, you will

still be expected to pay the full

fee for the course.

Overseas fees

funding, you will be required to

pay the full cost of your course at

the hourly rate of £9.50 per hour

plus any examination fees.

assessment so that we can guide

you onto the right course. Where

you see in the guide, you will

Courses that lead to a nationally

recognised qualification involve

final assessment by an external

Idea Store Course Guide 2019-20

Arts and Creative Industries Workshops

We have a series of Creative Industries Workshops

in the following areas:

• Photography

• Ceramics

• Printmaking

• Fashion

These workshops have been carefully designed

as a direct progression route from our community

learning programmes. The aim of the workshops

is for you to further your work and raise your

profile within the creative industries sector, either

through producing work for exhibition, competition

or employment; or potentially as a self-employed

entrepreneur producing work for sale.

You will develop your existing knowledge and

skills through full access to a wide range of

specialist equipment together with professional

support from a member of staff. Learners who

successfully complete a Workshop, have access

via their Tutor to one ‘free’ Saturday ‘Promote

and Sell your Work Online’ course and increased

exhibition opportunities. Whilst we will provide

most basic materials, you will be expected to

provide any specialist materials. You should have

the necessary ambition and drive to self-direct

your own study and be active in raising your own

profile or be pursuing a career within the creative

industries sector.

If you wish to enrol on a workshop class, you

must have completed at least 20 hours on one

of our intermediate or improvers’ courses, within

the last three years or hold an equivalent level of

knowledge and skills. To join the workshops you

may be required to complete a short telephone

interview with a manager to assess your skills

and knowledge. These workshops are an exciting

addition to our portfolio of courses and we look

forward to seeing successful learners progress

through them.

Ricardo Guido

Sewing Techniques – Intermediate

Riccardo started as a student in Pattern Cutting

and then went on to sewing classes at the Shadwell

Centre. Over the past 5 years, Riccardo has gone

from a complete beginner to being one of this year’s

(series 5) finalists on the Great British Sewing Bee.

Ricardo continues to study at the Shadwell Centre where

he has made a tailored jacket incorporating vintage fabrics

from his travels, even upcycling an old sofa into a highly

desirable leather jacket.

“Having started as a complete beginner I’m now making

my own clothes using a variety of techniques and fabrics.

I really enjoy my course.”

Hina Shah

Hand Knitting, Crochet

and Macrame

“I’ve really enjoyed my knitting course and the

other textile courses, learning a variety of new

skills. These have helped boost my confidence and

helped me to work independently at home. I have a

better understanding of textile crafts and I can now

confidently help others; exchange skills and join in with

a variety of social crafting groups.

I like to make accessories and gifts for my family such as hats

- which are made on 5 needles; blankets; intricate lace shawls

and woollen mittens. I now also make things for charity - soft

blankets for hospital neonatal baby wards and for abandoned

kittens. My own cat has several accessories!

I would recommend the courses it’s a great way to meet new

people and relax from daily life stresses. My tutor is fantastic

and she can teach everyone to knit - even if you didn’t think

you could!”

“I enrolled as I wanted to be able to repair some

of my clothes. I thought that I would just learn

how to sew some stitches to mend something,

but I was so wrong.

You can imagine my surprise when I went to my first class

the tutor said that not only would I have made my own

bag by the end of the evening session, by the end the

course I would also have made my own dress! And sure

enough I did!

The tutor made sewing and using a sewing machine very

accessible to me. Every week we were taught a new

technique. By breaking down a huge undertaking into

small manageable steps, the tutor made making my own

dress a reality, despite the fact that I had never used a

sewing machine before.

This course has given me the confidence not only to mend

my own clothes but also to try and make new clothes, and

I wear my dress with pride!”

Learning to use exercise to stay healthy

and fit

If you want to stay healthy and fit through exercise,

then we have lots of classes for you ranging from

Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi. You could also choose

Gentle Movement and Chair-based Exercise for

those requiring a slower pace or Circuit Training for

Strength for a more strenuous workout.

Classes are tailored to meet your needs, grouped

on ability and available for those with particular

needs, including some single sex classes. We also

offer swimming for parents and children.

Stephen Walker

Tai Chi Intermediate

“I wanted to keep fit and meet people so I joined

Get Started in Tai Chi a year ago. I didn’t realise

it would be as good as it was. At the end of each

lesson I walk home relaxed and de-stressed. I have

mastered 8 form and I’m now working on 24 form in

the Intermediate class.

The tutor is excellent! He corrects my posture and

includes a variety of movement so I am always interested

and looking forward to the next lesson.

As I am getting older I find Tai Chi helps me both mentally

and physically. I hope to keep it up in my old age.”

FITNESS:

Level of Classes

Fitness Classes

Classes within the fitness programme are generally

offered at beginner, intermediate or ‘all’ levels.

Remember, even if you exercise on a regular basis,

you may wish to attend a beginner level course if you

are new to that particular style or format of class.

Beginners

This level is suitable for beginners or those with

limited experience of the class style/format.

Classes at this level will focus on developing the

correct exercise technique. This level is also ideal

for those who have not participated in that style for

a long time and wish to refresh their skills.

Intermediate

This level is aimed at people with good knowledge

of the exercise style / format who want to improve

and develop their skills and / or challenge their

fitness level further. These classes will require a

greater awareness of the class vocabulary than the

beginner level courses.

All Levels

‘All Level’ courses are open to all and tutors will offer

modifications to enable everyone to participate fully

based on their experience and ability.

Keith Turpin

Tour Guiding in Tower Hamlets

“The course was professionally led and provided

me with a thorough grounding in the principles and

practice of guiding, both specifically in Tower Hamlets

and generally for London or other urban environments.

I learned techniques for researching, compiling and

delivering guided walks; for managing and directing

groups safely with particular reference to traffic,

physical hazards and awareness of selected routes,

as well as voice projection, audience engagement and

entertainment. I benefited from this foundation in going

on to complete the Camden Tour Guide Association

qualification and have used all these skills frequently,

working as a part time guide in a number of London

locations on both a paid and voluntary basis.”

Learn about Therapy and Health

Discover how to improve your sense of

wellbeing and reduce stress through a range of

introductory therapy courses including massage,

aromatherapy and Reiki.

We also offer short courses and weekend

tasters in improving general wellbeing, including:

Mindfulness, Life Coaching, Self Esteem and

Public Speaking. Our 2 day course in Mental

Health First Aid (MHFA) teaches people how

to identify, understand and help someone who

may be experiencing a mental health issue.

On successful completion you will become a

certified Mental Health First Aider.

Phillipa Ryland

Introduction to Aromatherapy

“I found the Introduction to Aromatherapy very

interesting and engaging. It was a well-structured

and informative course, designed for the absolute

beginner to dip their toe into the world of essential

oils and product making.

We learned about the origins of essential oils, their uses

and functions, safety and contraindications, benefits and

product making. We also learnt how to make blends and

synergies, getting as creative as we wanted!

I would highly recommend the course to others who are

new to aromatherapy or those who want a brush up

before embarking on their professional training. There’s

a lot of content so prepare to be challenged, but it’s also

fun when you get to apply it in your product making.”

Level of Classes

Health Courses

The majority of health courses are offered

at beginner level. These are short courses

and are a good introduction to the topic;

no prior experience is needed at this level.

A small number of courses are for

‘Improvers’, aimed at those who have

successfully completed an introductory

course. Tutors can advise learners of

further courses or progression routes for

those who are interested.

Weekend tasters

Weekend tasters are a great way to try

something new without the commitment

of a whole course. These classes are open

to all but will be taught at beginner level.

Please note that the above descriptions

are provided for indicative purpose only

as these may vary depending on personal

circumstances.

If in doubt please contact a member of

the Health and Fitness Team and/or

popular languages. For more information on

what is covered in each course please see our

The majority of our levels are divided into three

modules of 20 hours each.

Beginners 12 week courses

These courses take you from a complete novice

to being able to hold a simple conversation on

everyday topics. To join a Part 2 course you will

need approximately 30 hours equivalent knowledge.

Mohammed Towfique Latif

Ascentis Level 1 Award in

Understanding Community Interpreting

“I joined this course to gain better job prospects in

the future. I wanted to build up my career by doing

something different for myself as well as my ethnic

community. Having no previous skills in interpreting

I started with the Level 1 course to get an insight

into the subject. After studying and completing all

the assignments I gained my Level 1 certificate.

I then decided to complete the Level 3 award and gain

the recognised qualification needed to be a community

interpreter. After completing the Level 3, it has become

easy to find employment. I have taken on a few jobs just

to build up my confidence slowly. This course has been a

success for me and has enabled me to build up the right

skills and qualities to gain employment as an interpreter.”

Sara Alkabalan

Interpreting

“Having decided to pursue a career in Interpreting

I saw Idea Store offered a Level 1 course. So, in

September 2017, with trepidation and uncertainty in my

own ability I took the preparation course for Level 1.

I never imagined I would be able to interpret in a

professional context. However, my tutor encouraged

me and gave me the skills, knowledge and confidence

that I needed. With much hard work, after successfully

completing Level 1 in Community Interpreting. I went

on to complete Level 3 and I now work as a successful

community interpreter. Not one to rest on my laurels, I

considered the other professional development courses

offered by the Idea Store. Accordingly, I took ECDL course

and completed a mental health first aid course. The former

gave my IT skills a huge boost and I am now able to use

Excel, Word and Outlook to manage my billing, invoices,

CV, calendar and much more. The latter has helped greatly

in being able to interprete with greater technical knowledge

and empathy in a mental health context.

Thanks to the Idea Store support and encouragement

and most importantly the professionalism of their

courses, I am now working and intend to pursue a Level

6 qualification in Interpreting within the next year. I would

encourage everyone to take advantage of the great

courses and training offered by the Idea Store and I hope

to take further courses with them in the coming academic

year for the Best is Yet to Be!”

For learners with some existing knowledge and

skills through our Improvers and Intermediate

courses. We can offer you what you need

to maintain your standard or to improve and

build on it. Whether you want to become an

enthusiastic amateur or aspire to perform

professionally, there are courses for you too.

Progress by joining one of our All Levels*,

Improvers or Intermediate courses. Most of

the courses mentioned above have an improvers

and some an intermediate level. We have now

introduced new audition sessions for our Playing the

Drum Kit, Playing the Guitar and Piano Keyboard

Skills courses at the beginning of each term, for

all learners wanting to enrol on those courses.

The tutors will then be able to accurately assess

each learner’s skills and then suggest the most

appropriate level for you to enrol on. That is why

the three above named courses now have tutor

screening requirements for all levels.

If you want to engage in intensive dance, pursue

professional dance training in order to develop

a dance related career, there are the following

How to join a performing arts, guitar, drum kit

and keyboard courses at Idea Store Learning

All of our Performing Arts: Guitar, Drum Kit and

Keyboard classes now require tutor screening

(TSCR) before you can join any of them, you must

attend a ‘Find Your Level’ and enrolment session.

At the session we will give you the opportunity

to play the instrument for the tutor in order to

demonstrate your actual level of competence or

you can just speak to him/her, if you are a complete

beginner, so that he/she can guide you onto the

right class through a one-to-one interview.

Documents for Enrolment Checklist

If you can play the instrument, your playing skills

will be tested. We will also discuss your needs

and availability. Once we have agreed a suitable

class for you, you will need to enrol and pay any

fees that are due as soon as possible because

the classes start the very next week.

You will not have a confirmed place in the class

until you have enrolled. Please remember to

bring the documents for enrolment listed below.

Please note: Due to sometimes high demand

for courses and limitations to the maximum sizes

of our classes, we cannot guarantee a place for

every learner.

Before you attend your ‘Find Your Level’, please check that you have all of the items that

you need to bring along, in order to enrol afterwards.

1. Proof of Address (not older than 3 months)

2. Proof of benefit or income (if claiming a concession fee)

3. Your fee (Cash, Credit or Debit card)

4. Your acoustic Guitar, if you are coming for the Guitar audition.

Please note: we cannot assess and enrol you unless you bring everything you need.

‘Find Your Level’ Dates

‘Find your level’ take place in September, January

and April and they all take place at our Shadwell

Centre, from where the courses will run. Our

audition sessions are two and a half hours long

(6:00- 8:30 pm) but you do not need to be there

the whole time.

However, you may have to wait a little while for the

tutor to see you. Please be on time, if you can.

If you cannot, then please ensure that you turn

up before 8:00 pm at the latest on the day.

“All teachers have provided a friendly and professional

environment reflecting Idea Store core values,

allowing student to grow confident in their practice

and encouraging everyone to explore different styles.

I am really grateful for the opportunity I had to nourish my

passion for dance as an adult student as this contributes

greatly to my physical and mental well-being.

Dance practices help me to stay focused and to

challenge my limits and at the same time provide space

for social interaction and inspiration from others.”

Black & White Darkroom

Processing and Printing Techniques - All Levels

“I have always enjoyed photography and always

wanted to learn how to develop and print my own

films. In the Black & White Darkroom course I have

had the opportunity to do that in a relaxing and

creative environment.

I value the professionalism of my tutor and the support

that he has given me. I also enjoy learning from other

students in the friendly social atmosphere and we

always help each other, no matter what our individual

background or experience. The lessons have allowed me

to express myself and develop some creative projects

that I can use in my job. Being creative also helps me to

manage the day to day stresses of life and it is a way of

taking care of my own mental health.”

“This has been a very challenging task

(re-upholstering my arm chair) and couldn’t have

done it without Sylvie’s guidance and support.

From being a total beginner to an intermediate upholsterer

and I feel a lot more confident about the skills I acquired

throughout the course. Thank You.”

Saphrine Hayden - Painting and Drawing

“I joined the course to improve my painting and

drawing skills, learn how to correctly use media

and gain confidence.

I was excited to start the course and it more than

surpassed my expectations! The sessions were in a

welcoming, non-judgmental and progressive learning

environment. I found it to be an inspiring and insightful

experience from start to finish; full of practical exercises,

demonstrations, group discussions and homework

assignments that encouraged further practice and

understanding of the topics we learnt. It was pleasantly

surprising how much we covered within the 10-week

period, my favorite parts of the course were the oil

painting segment and being in a group with people who

had similar interests who motivate and encourage each

other. This course has definitely given me the confidence

to continue painting and I will be taking part in the

‘Promote and Sell your Work Online’ course to help

exhibit and sell my work in the near future.”
