It is a great honour for me to write this FOREWORD for our 

ANNUAL RESEARCH REPORT 2018. A research report seeks to 

address the following: 

• To promote teaching and learning 

• To contribute towards the country’s knowledge economy 

• To promote and enhance community engagement and 

therefore profile the concept of an engaged University 

• To align our Research initiatives to the NDP 2030 and 

Africa Agenda 2063 and more importantly to ensure that our 

students are prepared for the world of work – what is 

generally and commonly referred to as responding to the 

Fourth Industrial Revolution as propounded by Klaus Schwab. 

I have pleasure to mention that our Research output is on the rise 

but taking cognisance of the fact that we cannot be complacent 

as there is still work to be done. With the above having been 

said, VUT is proud to recognise and boast about the Research 

productivity of some NRF-rated Researchers and in this regard the

It is worth mentioning that in addition to the above achievements, 

individual academics received widespread recognition for their 

research work. 

1. Kwena Pete was awarded the best presenter/paper at the 

Sustainable Sanitation, Waste Management Conference in 

Cape Town in November 2018. The award comes with a full 

scholarship for her to attend the next conference to be held 

in South Korea in 2020. 

2. Dr Qwebani-Ogunleye from the Faculty of Applied and 

Computer Sciences, Institute of Traditional Knowledge and 

Traditional Medicine, Dihlare Remedy PTY (LTD) was selected 

by the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS). This 

platform serves as the voice of young researchers in South 

Africa, and one serves for three to five years. 

3. Dr Naser Feto received the Top Intellectual Property 

Creator Award. The award is for the most actionable 

disclosures at Vaal University of Technology during the period 

2 August 2010 to 31 August 2018. 

The Research Directorate received a total of 162 Research units 

that have been submitted to DHET but not yet approved. 

I am therefore happy to present the report to the public in the 

interest of the public good and more importantly, in the interest 

of the public scrutiny and engagement.

The Vaal University of Technology is a learning institution with 

a specific research mandate. The Institution, therefore aims its 

research focus, while informing its teaching programme on “Research 

That Matters” in thematic areas that demonstrate our 

commitment to engage with societal issues, and by doing so, to 

contribute to a better future. 

This implies orientation that consistently asks questions about 

research that matters, in order to ensure a real impact in and on 

society. The University’s areas of strategic focus are featured in 

this review, with its theme-based structure aligned with South 

Africa’s National Development Plan 2035, and, the African Union’s 

Agenda 2063. 

We have seen a rise in the number of research projects in 2018, 

by individuals and groups in each of the four faculties. There is 

growing recognition in the science community that universities as 

public institutions should contribute to the growth, development 

and wellbeing of societies and that new ways of doing science to 

effectively address complex problems are needed. 

Continuous research endeavours are aimed at promoting the 

institutionalisation of the research focus areas. This was done 

through creating awareness and supporting the existing research 

centres.

There has been a paradigm shift from a previous technikon 

environment, where lecturers felt their role was mainly teaching, 

to applied research and capacity, that is conducive to growth. As 

a UOT we are well placed to contribute to the advancement of 

knowledge in our disciplines and knowledge of the economy in 

South Africa and the African continent. 

The year 2018 was an exceptional year for the academic 

portfolio in as far as the alignment of the academic project and our 

research programme is concerned. Grounded in our commitment 

to innovation and interdisciplinary research, we provide students 

with a rich educational experience that marries intellectual rigor 

and cross-disciplinary breadth in an institute, student-centered 

environment. 

We have a vision, determination and resources that can enable 

the VUT to contribute to the technological advancement of our 

country and the continent. The importance of innovation is 

evident by a number of activities, and programmes embarked 

upon in the University’s Technology Station and Fablab, 

assisted of SMNEs during 2018 to become globally competitive by 

providing them with the technological support they have required 

to design and manufacture innovative new products. As such, we 

modified the institutional research model to be first driven by the 

individual, the departmental and then faculty levels. The office of 

the Executive Director: Research, will continue to play a facilitative 

role and support engagement in research by all academics.

VUT values the scholar-teacher model of combining research 

with teaching and learning, and other scholarly activities. This 

has a strong influence on the quality of intellectual endeavour at 

the University and is critical in advancing the University’s pursuit 

of a strong postgraduate trajectory. One of our key focus areas 

continues to be staff qualification improvement. We are 

committed to ensuring that we enhance the capacity of our 

staff to deliver on the human capacity development needs 

of the country. It is gratifying to see that scholarship and 

publishing has continued to blossom at VUT, and has also 

occurred over a wider academic space, and that there have 

also been increased enrolments of postgraduates, as part of 

the overall University Strategy. 

Research is not something that happens in laboratories. 

Research today also happens in the Human Sciences and 

Management Sciences Faculties. Doing research in 

partnership entails a conversation among people with the same 

intellectual interest. It is through conversation that new 

ideas are generated, a hunch confirmed or a hypothesis is 

strengthened. Research is also the active collaboration 

between scholars and scientists across the world. 

I take this opportunity to thank the researchers at VUT for 

their dedication and passion, for the hard work and long 

hours they spend doing research. The continuous focus on the 

improvement of infrastructure continued in 2018 and the 

approval of funding for the extension of laboratory 

faculties provided a significant impetus to further grow the 

research base of the Institution, both for teaching and research 

purposes. 

Through all this, we have increased our international footprint. 

It is clear from the above, that VUT is indeed at the cutting 

edge of social and technological innovation and sustainable 

development.

The Research environment at the Vaal University of Technology 

(VUT) has shown signs of maturing annually. The Research 

Directorate is extremely excited to be a part of this contribution 

towards the development of the research culture. As a research 

development team, we remain committed to supporting staff 

and students in developing their capacity to enhance their 

research. There has been a steady growth with the research

The main objective of the institution remains to strengthen its 

staff qualification profile so that more staff members will be able 

to develop their research, supervise students, and strengthen 

the critical mass in stimulating a research culture. We have also 

improved the success rate of our postgraduate students where 

we had 53 graduates in 2018 compared to the 26 in 2017. 

We look forward to further enhance and deepen research 

participation at VUT. All indications are that this will happen 

as more heads of departments become involved in research, 

create opportunities for staff members, and support the 

development of the institutional strategy in realising its capacity 

to be a university with a technology focus. 

I would like to extend my gratitude to all researchers and 

students at VUT, and also to the staff members in the research 

office who work tirelessly in order to ensure that researchers are 

consistently supported in enabling research at VUT.

our hope that this

VUT.

The Technology Transfer and Innovation Directorate achieved 

all but one target for the 2018 financial year. Our official targets 

included raising income (raised R31 million on a target of R30 

million), producing prototypes (produced 12 prototypes against 

a target of 10), signing Memorandum of Understandings (signed 

14 Memorandum of Understandings against a target of 7) and 

finally recording innovation disclosures (recorded 23 Innovation 

Disclosures against a target of 32). The team raised R31 

million against a total of R90 million worth of proposals that were 

submitted to different organisations. While we celebrate 

and congratulate those who put all the effort to raise the 

funding, we note that the tough economic times require a 

different model and approach. Our low performance on 

innovation disclosures also indicates that we need a different 

model to encourage our researchers to disclose their innovations. 

Innovation disclosures should be one of the top research outputs, 

with the appropriate reward systems, given the emphasis by the 

government to translate research outputs to tangible solutions 

for the people of South Africa. 

Besides the performance on our four official indicators, the TTI 

delivered as expected on all our funded projects. Some of the key 

achievements include: 

• The Technology Station (TS) program has been funded by The 

Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) since 2009 to improve 

competitiveness of local industries and to train entrepreneurs, 

staff and students. Grant received from TIA was R7,5 

million for 2018. TS worked on more than 10 projects and 

has trained and serviced more than 200 clients. 

• The Northern Cape Technology Station (NCTS) in Upington, 

which focusses on rural sustainable development achieved 

targets set by TIA and received the operational funding of 

R2,9 million. 

• The Idea2Product (I2P) laboratory has successfully signed 

declaration of interests with various partners at the 

Central University of Technology and the University of the 

Free State. These partnerships will help the VUT I2P to open 

two training incubators in the Free State. The I2P accredited 

training program that has been accredited and registered 

under merSETA; and will be offered as a short learning 

program. 

• The Collaborative Program for Additive Manufacturing 

(CPAM) is a consortium which aims to increase the 

utilisation and the adoption of the Additive manufacturing as 

an accepted advance manufacturing technology by the South 

Africa manufacturing industry. The consortium Supported 

9 BTech students, 8 MTech and 2 DTech student projects, 

registered 1 provisional patent ad submitted 1 Journal and 

4 conference papers. 

• The partnership between the VUT and the French South 

African Schneider Electric Education Centre (FSASEC) 

re-affirmed the commitment from Schneider Electric to 

support the FSASEC and VUT through singing a new MOU. 

Prof Alexandre Sebastiani left the French South African 

Schneider Electric Education Centre in July 2018 after 9 years 

of dedication and hard work. Mr Riaan Greef is the current 

coordinator of the program. Graduation of 2017 students 

took place on 24 May 2018. 

• The Tirelo Bosha E-Waste project launched the VUT Science 

Park E-Waste container project on the 7th of May 2018. A 

community partner, Sky Vantage (Pty) Ltd partnered with 

VUT Enterprise to operate the venture. A total of 5,45 tons 

have been collected to date. Of the dismantled e-waste the 

largest quantities consist of CRT monitors (330), flat screens 

(43), desktops (1790), printers (13) and keyboards (12). 

• The Centre of Footwear Entrepreneurship (COFE) has 

secured funding from FP&M Seta to recruit and train a cohort 

of 20 community candidates who started in October 2018. 

The learners will be at the VUT Science Park till September 

2019. 

• Centre for Entrepreneurship & Rapid Incubator (CfERI) in 

Upington received support to the value of R6 million for 

a 3-year period from the Department of Small Businesses 

Development. In 2018 a 6-months Entrepreneurship 

Programme was presented in Upington and Rietfontein. To 

date, 779 trained, 148 SMMEs supported, 34 new Small, 

Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises have been established, 

and 39 new jobs have been created directly through the 

programmes and support. 

• The enterprise development team has graduated 40 

students who were trained for 6 months as part of the VUT/ 

Sasol Entrepreneurship program. The team also initiated 

the VUT Student Enterprise development initiative which 

received 32 entrepreneurial ideas from students, with 12 

students completing the workshops and finally 3 students 

were awarded prizes. The team also organised 11 monthly 

seminars attended by more than 700 participants. The e-kasi 

Lab, hosted in partnership with the Innovation Hub recruited 

11 new companies for incubation, hosted 3 Boot camps 

with a total of 65 companies participating and supported 6 

companies to commercialize their products. 

• The Public Relations, Marketing and Communications 

Department hosted more than 30 different events as well as 

participated in various events to showcase the Science Park. 

Key events included the Rand Show, RAPDASA, SATN, Sasol 

Techno X, Porsche Business Breakfast etc. 

• The staff complement for the year 2018 at the Science Park 

was hundred and forty-one (141). There were eight (8) 

resignations and three (3) staff members who went on 

maternity leave. About nineteen (19) staff members are 

undergoing professional development, and about five (5) 

staff members completed their qualifications for the year 

2018.

Indeed, to increase the stock of knowledge to devise new 

applications, we need the components of research which 

are creativity, innovation and systematic work. High-Quality 

research in broad research fields has found a home in the Faculty of 

Applied and Computer Sciences. We have seen researchers and 

postgraduate students heavily involved in high-quality research 

which produced results that led to papers published and students 

graduating. The number of papers that came from this research is 

47, and the number of students who graduated is 24 for Masters 

Degree and 1 for Doctoral Degree. 

We have seen progress in many focus areas that have been 

established by different departments in the Faculty. The Faculty is 

indeed proud of its dedicated postgraduates, postdoctoral fellows 

and researchers who count among the world research leaders in 

their research fields of expertise. 

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors, 

big and small for the role they played in ensuring that our 

research activities are fulfilled. The funding from our University has

In 2018, the 

research-output 

increased by 52.73% 

(23.99 units in 2017 

to 36.64 units in 

2018). This is a huge 

increase compared 

to the previous one 

of 0.5%.

In 2018 the Faculty of Engineering and Technology lost one of 

its NRF-rated researchers and another key stand member in 

the Centre for Renewable Energy and Water (CREW). In the 

same year, VUT started developing a new master’s degree on “ 

Engineering Education and Management” in collaboration 

with TUT, Flensburg and ULBS under the auspices of “Erasmus+ 

Capacity Building in Higher Education”. The participating 

institutions are VUT, TUT, CPUT & DUT (South Africa) and the 

other collaborating institutions are Hochschule Wismar, 

Fachhochschule Flensburg, USZ Szczecin in Poland & ULBS 

University of Sibiu in Romania (EU). The project title is, 

“Personalised Engineering Education in Southern Africa” (PEESA). 

The Faculty also hosted the SACAM 2018 (South African 

Conference on Applied and Computational Mechanics) 

conference. VUT came second with a total article fraction 

contribution of 14.83 per institution (17%). This translated into 

7.415 DHET accredited units. 

In 2018, the research output increased by 52.73% (23.99 units 

in 2017 to 36.64 units in 2018). This is a huge increase compared 

to the previous one of 0.5%. This increase in research output 

can be attributed to the fact that more staff and students are 

taking an interest in publishing their research findings in DHET 

accredited journals and proceedings. It is worth noting that 

this increase happened against a backdrop of a null increase in 

postgraduate-student numbers. 

One of our master’s students, Miriam Nhlapo, visited overseas, 

for the second time, to complete her experimental work related 

to Equal Chanel Angular pressing, through our collaboration 

with NITT (National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli) in 

India and CSIR. The Faculty graduated a total of 11 postgraduate 

students in 2018 (3 Doctorates and 8 Masters). The Faculty also 

hosted 5 post-doctoral fellows in 2018 as opposed to 3 in 2017 (an 

increase of 66.7%). However, the Faculty did not host any visiting 

professors/scholars/lecturers in 2018. Our NRF-rated researchers 

decreased from 5 in 2017 to 4 in 2018. 

The Faculty’s collaborations, both nationally and internationally 

remained the same (NRF; IRDP; THRIP; CSIR; ESKOM; SASOL; 

Research Stimulation Fund; TIA Seed Fund; WRC Funding; CPAM; 

TiCoC; DiCoMI; Merseta; Telkom; EWseta; Chieta; LGseta; CHIETA, 

PEESA II, NITT and HySA) as in 2017. 

Our centres of excellence have remained unchanged since our 

2016 research report.

An emerging, vibrant research culture, a new season for 

scholarship growth! 

The Faculty of Human Sciences yielded the most research outputs 

ever, during the 2018 academic year. Boasting multi-disciplinarity, 

the research outputs conceptualised in diverse disciplines ranged 

from tourism, legal studies, communication, visual arts to STEM 

education. The research outputs contributed to knowledge 

creation and dissemination. 

This knowledge will not only benefit the institution, industry, 

government and society but will fundamentally contribute to 

new ways of conceptualising how we teach and assess students 

in our classrooms. Notably, the research done by the Faculty is 

also used to advise government and influence public policy. The 

nexus between research and teaching helps staff to continually 

reflect on finding new ways and applications of new knowledge 

to improve throughput and student success rates. 

Academic research is an integral part of global development. 

The drive to be counted in a knowledge society in the Faculty, 

resonates with the new wave of the Fourth Industrial Revolution 

which is, according to Schwab, within the control of all of us 

if we can collaborate across disciplines and diverse teams, to 

grasp the opportunities it presents and to enhance research in 

the Faculty. The need to design curricula to attract and prepare 

students for the current and future workplace, where the need for 

multidisciplinary skills is increasingly the norm, is realised in terms 

of staff working together to produce research articles. A vibrant 

atmosphere of scholarship and innovative thinking is fueled by 

the desire to become knowledge workers, educated and equipped 

with high-level skills to meet the challenges of the 21st century. 

Thus, we place central importance on faculty research so that 

we can become experts on the matters we research and share 

insights with our students. Cross-disciplinary learning from faculty 

members who are deeply, intellectually involved accentuates 

the desire to excel as researchers at different levels within the 

Faculty . This excitement urges faculty to continually search 

for new ideas to enhance research. Individual researchers and 

research collaborations, we have created a Faculty that is not 

only growing in productivity but is also a genuinely stimulating 

place to be. For the Faculty to remain competitive , we need 

excellent skills at all levels to develop a scholarship of engagement. 

Research output in the Faculty of Human Sciences will continue 

to grow henceforth, with a year-on-year increase in line with our

Research efforts within the faculty were met with enthusiasm 

despite the heavy workloads of most staff members. Staff 

members within the faculty should be applauded for their efforts 

in driving the research ethos. In the year 2018, staff members 

were encouraged to concentrate on their studies for their masters 

or doctoral qualifications within their respective disciplines. 

In the absence of a faculty research professor, Prof C Mafini had 

to take on additional responsibilities to perform the work of the 

office of the research professor. He is hereby applauded for his 

untiring efforts in fulfilling this role with distinction. 

The faculty’s research trajectory shows a steady increase in 

the number of master’s and doctoral students as well as staff 

members who completed their qualifications. A total eight 

students obtained their master’s qualifications within the faculty, 

while four staff members and students completed their doctoral 

qualifications. Staff members presented a total of 34 research 

papers at various national and international conferences. The 

attendance of conferences by staff members provided an ideal 

platform to disseminate their research and leverage avenues for 

possible collaborations in the future. Additionally, a total of 30 

articles were published in the Department of Higher 

Education and Training (DHET) accredited journals with an article 

equivalence of 24.67 units. Prof M Dhurup, Prof C. Mafini and Dr 

E. Chinomona were acknowledged for achieving top honours in 

research outputs at the university level. A faculty research awards 

ceremony was held at the end of November 2018 where all staff 

members who actively participated in research activities were 

acknowledged. To further equip staff members with advanced 

research skills, the faculty organised a supervisor’s workshop in 

June 2018 using the expert facilitation of Prof Bevan-Dye from 

North- West University. 

A total of six postgraduate induction sessions were held in which 

experts in various research areas were utilised as facilitators. The 

induction sessions provided postgraduate students in the faculty 

with an opportunity to hone their research skills and to prepare 

mentally for the journey through their studies. The induction 

sessions held on Saturdays between February and August 2018 

focused on the following aspects: 

• Research orientation and literature review 

• Proposal writing and structure 

• Library search engines, search techniques and plagiarism 

• Methodologies in research 

• Academic writing skills 

• Basic data analysis 

The postgraduate induction sessions have no doubt produced the 

desired impact as evident in the increased number of students 

who have already submitted their final research proposals. Credit 

is given to their respective supervisors and co-supervisors for 

providing guidance to students. 

The faculty was also fortunate to acquire the services of two 

visiting professors. Prof Joy Bhadury, Professor and Dean, Davis 

College of Business and Economics, Radford University, Virginia, 

USA and Prof. Dr Badar Alam Iqbal an Ex-Fulbright scholar from 

India. Prof Bhadury’s seminars focussed on the foundational 

concepts in operations and supply chain management, 

intermediate concepts in supply chain management, 

advanced topics in supply chain management and advices and 

strategies on doing research (for master’s and doctoral students). In 

addition, Prof Bhadury undertook individual sessions for 

masters and doctoral students in the faculty. Prof. Dr Badar Alam 

Iqbal facilitated two workshops on research methodology and 

publishing, evaluated PhD proposals and delivered a public lecture 

entitled-Indo-South African Trade and Investment Relation. 

The faculty requires more associate and full professors in order 

to provide support to our masters and doctoral students and 

create a larger research footprint. Of concern is that in South 

Africa, approximately one fifth of the academics which includes 

nearly half of the professoriate, are due to retire in the next 

decade. Moreover, there are insufficient numbers in the existing 

academic and postgraduate pipeline to replace them. It is time 

for the university to form research groups and give meaning 

to the concept of engaged scholarship. Engaged scholarship is 

premised on the idea that major advances in knowledge 

tend to occur when people consciously work together in 

groups to solve central problems confronting our society. It 

promotes the scholarship of discovery (which contributes to new 

knowledge), the scholarship of integration (which makes 

connections across disciplines), the scholarship of application 

(through which scholars ask how knowledge can be applied to 

address society’s problems) and the scholarship of 

teaching (which includes not only transmitting knowledge but also 

transforming and extending it beyond university walls). To this 

end, all staff members are advised to join research groups which 

the office of the Dean will champion. 

The support provided by the Research Directorate as well as 

the research office for the support given to staff members and 

students in the form of research related funding is 

acknowledged. The faculty will continue to support and 

encourage staff members and students by creating an intellectual 

space for research and developing a strong ecosystem where they 

can flourish into research scholars.

During 2018 a research team comprising members of staff and 

students at the CAE, under the leadership of Mr Marius 

Viljoen, converted the Electronic Engineering building to a “green” 

building by installing 120 solar panels with associated 

electronics. The energy efficiency of the building was increased 

and the entire building is solar power driven during the day. 

The team also installed an uninterrupted power supply system 

(UPS) in one of the electronic engineering laboratories. The aim 

thereof was to be able to supply the laboratory with power 

during electricity outages. The exercise was a huge success and 

since the commissioning of the system, the solar installation has 

delivered 100 MWh of electricity. This not only saves costs on the 

VUT electricity bill but also ensures that research and teaching is 

uninterrupted during power outages. The plan is to expand the 

UPS to all the lecture rooms and laboratories in the Electronic 

Engineering building. The master plan is to install similar systems 

to all buildings on the main campus. 

The CAE receives external financial support from:

through the Erasmus+ : Higher Education - International 

Capacity Building programme)
