Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media Under the sea was the place to be as young Ariels and their Prince Erics journeyed to Lions Community Center for the New Lenox Community Park District's Daddy-Daughter Date Night. The two night event – held on Friday, Aug. 9 and Saturday, Aug. 10 – provided approximately 230 local fathers and daughters with an opportunity to spend some time enjoying music, food, photo ops and more in a setting fit for a Disney princess. The theme of “Under the Sea” inspired several guests to wear The Little Mermaid-esque outfits and everyone was treated to a special visit by Ariel who sang “Part of Your World,” led a dance and stuck around for photos. “I think it's a very classic event. It's a unique thing that dads and daughters look forward to every year,” said recreation supervisor Tracy Wrase. “We have food catered from Joey's. They're always a big supporter of our events when I get them catered and we've got plenty of food this year.” The food was one of the highlights for seven-yearold New Lenox resident Sylvia Catt who attended the Friday night festivities with her dad, Anthony. “I like to dance and I like the food,” said Sylvia. Anthony Catt added that he appreciates “being able to spend some time with my daughter, nice good quality time.” Every year, Daddy- Daughter Date Night attendees pose for a souvenir photo to commemorate the occasion and this year a photo booth option was also available during the second half of the night. “The tradition is that they get one 4x6 or 3x5 picture with just dad and then we are setting up a photo booth so the girls can come back and take pictures with their friends and get a little photo strip with their friends too,” Wrase said. Peyton Behland, 9, Mackenzie Behland, 7, and their dad Kenneth Sopiarz, of New Lenox, enjoyed the theme, the dancing and spending time together. “I like all of it,” said Peyton adding that Ursula is one of her favorite characters in The Little Mermaid movie. Nine-year-old New Lenox resident Abigayle Johnson has been attending the event annually with her dad, Anthony Johnson, every year since she was three. “It's fun because I get to spend time with my dad,” said Abigayle Johnson. Anthony echoed her enthusiasm. “I love spending time with my daughter and seeing how much fun she has dancing around with her friends, having a good time,” said Anthony. Several Disney soundtrack songs – “Beauty and the Beast,” “You've Got a Friend in Me,” “Under the Sea,” etc. – kept the dance floor filled throughout the night as did pop hits like “Royals,” “Brave,” “Party in the U.S.A.” and “Shake It Off.” Raffles and a candy bar added to the fun-filled evening. The New Lenox Community Park District is gearing up for its fall programing which includes a new Community Bonfire event on Friday, Oct. 18 as well as a twist on an old favorite. “Instead of our Poocha-Palooza, we're calling it Barks and Brews this year. We're still going to have the theme of Pooch-a-palooza where there's vendors and different demonstrations, but we'll have a twist with it. “We're going to have beer and alcohol available for people who are 21 and over,” Wrase said. Living trusts and wills are two estate planning options designed specifically to help you prepare for the inevitable. While one focuses largely on the management of your assets during life and after death, the other focuses solely on the distribution of your assets after you’ve passed away. How do you choose between a living trust or a last will and testament? While it is uncomfortable to think about your death, it’s crucial to take certain steps to protect your assets before that time comes. Living trusts and wills are two estate planning options designed specifically to help you prepare for the inevitable. What is a living trust? A living trust is a legal entity that allows an individual to place his/her assets under the management of a trustee. The trust’s ownership can either lie under the management of the individual or someone of his/her choosing. The trustee is either someone the trust maker appoints or the trust maker. • When opening a living trust, you can decide whether you want it to be revocable or irrevocable. A revocable living trust allows you to retain full control over and cancel the trust whenever you choose. The irrevocable living trust, on the other hand, blocks you from cancelling it. • A living trust enables you to place certain assets under the management of a trustee. The assets in the trust are protected during the owner’s lifetime and then transferred to their beneficiaries if that’s what they desire. • With a living trust, you will be able to witness how your trustee manages your assets while you’re still alive. Opting for a living trust should also allow your descendants to avoid the probate process. The assets in your estate should be disbursed more or less immediately upon your death (or on a fixed date, such as a child’s 18th birthday). What is a last will and Testament? A last will gives you the power to decide what happens to your estate and your assets following your death. It’s a legal document that details your last wishes, particularly those concerning the distribution of your assets and the care of any minors. What you include in your last will can vary widely, but you generally will include at least the following information: • An executor is in charge of shepherding your estate through the probate process and managing your estate according to the terms of the will. • Beneficiaries are the person/people who will inherit your property/assets. • Information about your assets, including bank account information, location of assets and any other pertinent information. This is to help your executor streamline the process of determining how much your estate is worth. • If you have children who are minors you must designate guardians for your children. This can be part of a joint will between two spouses. A will does not immediately go into effect when you pass away. Rather, it must first pass through a legal process known as probate. With a will, you will be gone before your executor’s duties even begin. With a will it must pass through the probate process and could be contested. A will dictates in advance how you would like your executor to handle and distribute your estate after you pass away. A Word on living wills • A living will has little to do with living trusts or wills. • Living wills essentially give you the power to control which procedures you’ll undergo beforehand. • They also determine whether you want resuscitation, tube feeding or life support procedures. • Additionally, living wills will permit you to specify matters like guardianship for your children, organ donation wishes and personal hygiene requests. It is important to note at the outset that living trusts can be legitimate and valuable estate planning tools. However, scams involving living trusts raise serious and growing concerns. These scams often prey on older Americans’ concerns that their estates will be subject to long and costly probate, and involve misrepresentations about the costs and benefits of trusts versus wills and that local attorneys will create the trust documents.
