Centerville High School Alma Mater

There’s an Alma Mater close to us

Where our hearts may ever rest

And our loyalty will always be

With dear old C.H.S.

For her halls are filled with memories

Of the cherished joys we knew

And to you our dearest Centerville

We always will be true.

We would like to welcome all of you to the

Centerville City School District where athletics

serves as yet another tool to prepare our students

to excel in life when their high school experience

ends. We pride ourselves in partnering with our

athletes to help them always compete with a sense

of humility, embrace and respond to adversity in

an appropriate manner and continuously strive to

reach excellence. We are so appreciative of the

tremendous support we receive from the Centerville

Community and I want to personally thank all of

you for your continued and unwavering support.

We are proud members of the Greater

Western Ohio Conference and this past school year

won the GWOC Eastern Division All-Sports trophy

for the 17th consecutive year. The conference will

see some changes at the conclusion of this year but

the Elks remain committed to the GWOC and will

continue to be a proud member moving forward.

We would like to remind all of those who

attend our games that we all share a role in the

development of our student-athletes competing

and we ask you choose to behave in a manner

which reflects the positive values we are expecting

from our own student-athletes.

You can follow Centerville Athletics on twitter

@chselksad. We are very proud of the excellent

athletic programs we have here in Centerville, but

we are most proud of how our coaches and studentathletes

represent our school and our community.

Dear Elk Families,

Centerville Athletic Boosters

More than half of the high school and middle school student population in Centerville City Schools participate

in one or more of the sports programs offered by the district; a strong indication our community values and

supports the continuation of a strong sports program within Centerville City Schools. The value to the student

population from participating in the sports programs offered by the district ranges from being a part of a team,

being physically fit and improving skills in a game, becoming a leader in an athletic program to earning a

college scholarship as a result of the higher level of training and competition that our district enjoys.

The Centerville Schools Athletic Booster Club is a charitable organization whose mission and purpose is to

support the athletic programs offered by our district. With the ever-changing funding landscape for school

districts all over the country, it is now more important than ever for booster groups such as ours to work even

harder to continue providing these opportunities for our students. For over 30 years, the Athletic Booster

Club has worked to enhance the District’s athletic programs by providing supplemental funding and making

substantial contributions to the capital improvements in all our sport facilities. We have contributed to the

improvements in the weight room, the tennis courts, both gymnasiums, the soccer/lacrosse field, the baseball

field, and the football field. The Centerville community needs to continue its efforts now to help sustain these

popular athletic programs.

Please consider joining the Centerville Schools Athletic Booster Club if you have not already done so. It

is easy to join and there are a number of levels in which to participate. Visit the Booster Website at www.

elkboosters.com for membership information. Any support you can provide is greatly appreciated!

GO ELKS!

Centerville Girls Soccer

Recapping the 2017 Season

The 2017 varsity squad finished the season 10-5-

4. They fought hard as a unit and battled through

numerous injuries to make it to the their sixth

straight district semifinals.

The 2018 Squad

This year’s varsity squad will add 10 new players

to the 11 returning ones who are eager to play

soccer well into November. Led by 10 seniors, the

team is off to a great start this season. All of the

players recognize the tradition of excellence that

the program has maintained during its 41-year

history. Beginning with the mantra TEAM FIRST,

they have been working hard to build upon last

season’s successes. The coaches have set high

expectations for excellence both on and off the

pitch, and they will continually push the players to

represent the school and community proudly.

We look forward to the coming season, and we are

grateful for the support from the community.

Centerville Girls Cross Country

The harriers of CGXC wrapped up their 2016

campaign in dramatic fashion following a strong

season of top finishes in large races in Michigan,

Ohio, and Pennsylvania. During the championship

portion of the season, the team was able to capture

a divisional GWOC Championship, a Regional

Championship, and the team’s third consecutive

State Championship. The State Championship

team included Grace Kilroy, Savannah Lowe,

Rachel Whitehead, Kerri Walsh, Kelli Walsh, Dalia

Einstein, and Sophie Hippenmeyer. Grace Kilroy

was awarded All-Ohio recognition for her 19th place

finish (18:29). Additionally, six of these athletes

were eligible (freshman are not eligible) for the Ohio

Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches’

Academic All-Ohio award. These athletes must

have a 3.5 GPA or higher and compete at the State

Championships. All six athletes obtained this

recognition and hold a 3.95 GPA or higher! We are

so proud of these athletes’ hard work and dedication

both on and off the course.

Looking Forward to the 2017 Season

The outlook for the team in 2017 looks bright as

all seven of last year’s State Championship Team

return. In addition to the Top 7, the team is led by

six outstanding senior captains: Megan Clements,

Emily Horwath, Megan Kafka, Megan Knauer,

Maddie Shooter, and Kelli Walsh. These leaders

have led a consistent group of athletes through

their summer training and are anxiously awaiting

the opportunity to begin racing near the end of

August. The captains successfully chose a theme to

accompany and guide their season.

BE THE CHANGE will be a driving force for the team

throughout the fall as they embrace the three Core

Values of CGXC: PASSION, UNITY, and COURAGE.

The team, seventy-one athletes strong, will work this

season to strive to be a strong example of Elk Pride

while representing our outstanding high school and

supportive community.

We encourage everyone to support us by following

us on Twitter @CHSGirlsXC, through our website at

www.centervillegirlsxc.com, and by attending the

meets on our schedule.

Centerville Girls Volleyball

Centerville Welcomes New Girls Volleyball Head Coach and Program Director John Buck

Coach Buck has coached volleyball for over 30 years and 20

as the head coach of Toledo St Ursula High School. Under his

tutelage his teams accumulated 477 wins and 69 losses, won

15 league championships, 15 district titles, 12 regional crowns,

four state runner ups and two state championships. His peers

have selected him six times as the D1 state coach of the year,

12 times as the district coach of the year and 11 times as the

league coach of the year.

Coach Buck was also one of the three founding fathers of the

Toledo Volleyball Club. His duties included club director for 12

years, and various coaching assignments from age brackets

13’s to 18’s based on the needs of the club. Most years he

coached the 14-1 team.

Up until 2016, Coach Buck was resident of the Toledo, Ohio

area, hence his love for Detroit Tigers, Lions, Pistons and Red

Wings, and just to the North is his favorite University - Michigan.

Coach retired from Consumers Energy and relocated with his

wife Pamela and daughter Sarah to Bellbrook, Ohio to be close

to their daughter Michelle, her husband Sam and their five

children.

Coach Buck is looking forward to being part of building a strong

volleyball program here at Centerville High School. He believes

it is important to create a competitive atmosphere where there

is no fear of failure, where the players play for their teammates

first, and at the same time challenge each other, in a positive

way to be the best versions of themselves both on and off the

court.

Coach Buck’s philosophy is fairly simple, “There are no short

cuts to the top” You want to excel at anything you have to be

willing to put in the time and effort to make it happen.

Coach Buck is excited about his coaching staff, this staff is

going to help move the program forward, let’s meet them.

MEGGIE MARTEN - VARSITY ASSISTANT COACH

Meggie Marten. Coach Marten will be in charge of our back row

the Year.

She has spent the last 10 years in Charlotte, North Carolina

where she has taught physical education and coached

volleyball at various levels and clubs. The past four years,

Coach Marten has been the director of volleyball and varsity

volleyball coach for Cannon School. There, her team won a

conference championship and finished third in the state two

years in a row for the North Carolina Independent Schools

Athletic Association.

Coach Marten is looking forward to moving back to her home

state and continuing her coaching career at Centerville High

School.

ERIN GEYER - JUNIOR VARSITY HEAD COACH

coach at the club. Prior to that, she was a four-year assistant

coach at Angola High/ Middle School and five-year head coach

with Team Pineapple Volleyball Club for open level teams. With

Team Pineapple Volleyball Club her teams won many high-level

tournaments as well as national qualifiers.

Coach Geyer was born and raised just north of Fort Wayne,

Indiana. She is a graduate of Leo High School and Taylor

University. For the majority of her playing career, she played

outside hitter and defensive specialist achieving 4-year letter

winner, All Tourney and Conference Teams, 2 year Captain and

Centerville Sports Medicine

The sports medicine program at Centerville High School allows our students to gain

valuable hands-on experience with our athletes. Students in this program volunteer in

the athletic training room under the guidance of our full-time trainers. They take care

of the basic needs of practice, game, and competition preparations for the athletes.

Each student is assigned to one sport and follows that team to home and away

games.
