‘Banks-centric’ film in the works

• By Jess Gibson

A SHORT film showcasing Port

Levy is set to be made.

Peninsula will be a fictional

drama about three isolated

people who manage to connect

in a very surprising way.

Award-winning editorturned-producer

Scott Flyger

and screenwriter/director Fiona

McKenzie have teamed up to

produce the film, which has been

inspired by real-life events.

Flyger, who lives in Governors

Bay, said the project will be

“Banks-centric.”

“We wanted it to be based in

a small township in the Banks

Peninsula, as it has very beautiful

aspects and scenery. It’s moody

and can have lots of sunshine or

dark clouds. It’s quite a dramatic

landscape.”

He said the film will

incorporate a cast, music talent,

crew members and props from

around the peninsula.

Flyger was editor of the

BAFTA award-winning comedy

series, That Mitchell and Webb

Look, and his other works have

won awards around the globe.

After writing for children’s

staples Play School and What

Now, McKenzie was a journalist

on CTV, before training as a

director at South Pacific Pictures.

Lyttelton resident and theatre

actor Tom Trevella has been cast

as Mark, a sound engineer who

moves to Banks Peninsula to

try and find his place within the

world.

Mr Trevella said he is excited

to see the film put a spotlight on

the area and its creative people as

“so much of the industry is based

in the North Island.”

Trevella will star in the film

alongside Jasper Sutcliffe, who

is set to play Toby, and Amber

Ranson.

Ranson, who has Down’s

syndrome, has a goal to star in a

film before the end of the year.

The team are on track to

fundraise the $15,000 production

budget, which will cover props

and costumes, location and

accommodation fees, equipment,

publicity, money for the cast and

crew, and catering contributions.

Screen CanterburyNZ is

supportive of the project and is

helping with marketing, as the

organisation wants to grow the

area as a filming destination.

Flyger said the crew hopes

to start shooting in September

so the film is wrapped up by

December. People who donate

to the film will be offered an

on-screen credit and will be

kept up to date throughout preproduction

and production.
