THE AMOUNT of rubbish
going to landfill in the district
has jumped by almost 50 per
cent in seven years.
The increase has prompted the
district council to adopt a new
plan to deal with the amount of
waste being produced.
The total amount of rubbish
going to
landfill has
jumped 49.1
per cent from
12,506 tonnes
in 2012 to
18,646 tonnes
in 2018.

The Waste
Management
and Minimisation
Plan is
the district council’s strategy for
the management of solid waste
for the next six years.
Some of the key actions within
the plan are:
•Establish a reuse shop and
salvage yard. This will be at the
Pines Resource Recovery Park.
•Provide a structure and
utilities for a farm waste and
recycling processing area.
•Investigate fortnightly kerbside
collection as opposed to the
current weekly collection.
After adopting the new
WMMP the district council also
voted to adopt a new draft waste
management and minimisation
bylaw to be opened for public
consultation.
The bylaw sets out specific
ways the new WMMP will be
achieved.
If approved the bylaw would
see all kerbside collection
take place at 6.30am instead
of the current time of 7am on
State Highway 1 and 7.30am
everywhere else.
The district council would also
require individuals lodging resource
or building consents for
commercial or industrial purposes
to submit a waste management
plan for the construction
and operational phases.
Event organisers may also
be required to submit a waste
management plan for an event,
depending on the size.
Mayor Sam Broughton said
as the population continues
to grow so has the amount of
waste.

The new WMMP will set a

BLACK ICE CRASH
A motorist was lucky to escape
injury when his vehicle struck
black ice and overturned into
a ditch near Charing Cross
on Monday. Senior Constable
Andy Grant said the vehicle
ended up on its side in the
ditch on Bealey Rd about 8am.
He said motorists should be
aware of black ice and drive to
the conditions.
WATER RACE CLOSURES
The district council has
approved the closure of
1.4km of water race south of
McLaughlins Rd, Malvern,
and 512m of water race near
Kingsdowne Drive, West
Melton. The races are no longer
required by the community.
The closure was agreed by
all affected properties and
approved by the district
council’s water race committee.
