Each life is a unique, solitary journey.
No matter how many friends or family
members you may be fortunate to
have, ultimately your body and mind,
your decisions, health and feelings,
are yours alone.
But building connections to others who
can support, influence, teach and inspire
us, can guide us down our singular
pathways towards greater fulfillment.
The extraordinary athletes in
Issue 9 represent a select group of
people whose lives shine light on
higher roads. By embracing their
individual challenges and passions,
they reinforce the belief that we
are all capable of taking charge of
our own lives, of forging ahead with
determination and perseverance.
For Peter Shankman, Andrew Cranston,
Miles Rough and Shashank Thukur,
athletes from radically different
backgrounds, their challenges share
a commonality. Managing ADHD,
recovering from a bone-shattering
accident, taking on obesity and
overcoming childhood disease, this
group of unconventional athletes
suffered and floundered, but they
more than survived – they excelled.
Levi Markwardt and Dr. Johannes
Lierfeld, seekers of knowledge and
teachers who lead by example,
reveal that strength can be built
and tested in many ways. Embracing
challenges, they find fulfillment by
setting new goals, reaching them
and maintaining the gains made by
hard work over the years.
Street workout athletes Jamie
Geraghty, founder of Bar Monkeys
and Melanie Driessen, top performers
in the calisthenics movement, reveal
the skills which built their agile,
athletic bodies. By discovering their
passion, they encourage others to
enjoy the benefits and joy of this
growing sport.
A look at the fascinating life of
the legendary armwrestler and
referee, Steve Stanaway, reveals an
uncompromising man in his 70’s who
is still willing to sit down (or stand
up) to pin an opponent in lightening
quick time.
We hope you enjoy your journey into
the world of these elite athletes,
and welcome your comments and
feedback.
