A proposal

for new parks

By Andrea Cordle

Southwest Editor

As Grove City grows, so does its recreational

needs.

In May, the city hosted a series of community

meetings to gather input regarding

new parks in the area, specifically in the

Beulah and Pinnacle areas. There was also

an online survey that ran for several

weeks. More than 700 community members

participated in the survey to provide

feedback.

Now, the results from those surveys have been

released and a concept for two new parks has been

developed.

“This reflects what the community wanted,” said

Grove City Parks and Recreation Director Kim

Conrad. “We are following what the community tells

us.”

The city contracted with the planning and architectural

firm MKSK to update the master plan for the

parks. The concepts for two new parks were presented

at a recent council meeting.

Beulah Park

“We want to make sure this is a refined, beautiful

park,” said Arin Blair, project manager for MKSK.

According to Blair, the community wants a park at

the Beulah property to be a go-to destination park. A

place to hold community events, like Schiller Park or

Goodale Park. It would include an amphitheater,

places to play, quiet areas and trail connections.

“We want the park to reflect the area’s history and

connect to the Town Center,” said Blair.

Beulah Park could also include exercise stations,

rentable shelters and courts for tennis, basketball or

pickleball.

“These elements are not set in stone,” said Conrad.

“These are concepts.”

the Gardens at Gantz Farm and the kitchen garden in Century

Village and have fun along the way.

Training is open to residents and non-residents. The deadline

to register is Aug. 30. Visit the www.grovecityohio.gov or call 614-

871-6323 for additional information.

Youth volleyball in Grove City

Grove City Parks and Recreation is registering participants for

fall indoor youth volleyball leagues through Aug. 30. Kids will

experience teamwork, learn the skills and fundamentals of youth

volleyball. Registration must be completed in person 8 a.m. to 5

p.m., Monday through Friday, at the Kingston Center, 3226

Kingston Ave. Each participant is registered as an individual and

assigned to a team.

Leagues are available for grades three through 12 in the following

divisions: junior (grades 3-4), intermediate (grades 5-6), middle

(grades 7-8) and senior (grades 9-12). Girls and boys compete

together. Practice starts the third week of September for the

junior division, early October for all others. Games begin in late

October with an eight-match season followed by a tournament.

The cost is $60 per player, $65 for non-residents, and includes a

team T-shirt. Registration forms must be signed by a parent or

legal guardian.

Volunteer coaches are needed; submit an application to the

parks and recreation office. Player and coach application forms are

available online.

For more information, visit GroveCityOhio.gov or call the Grove

City Parks and Recreation Department at 614-277-3050.

with Falco, Smith and Kelley and the city of Grove

City, the developer agreed to deed approximately 30

acres of land for the city to use as park space in the

Beulah redevelopment area.

According to MKSK, the estimated cost for Beulah

Park is $10.3 million.

Pinnacle Park

The plan for the Pinnacle Park is to utilize and preserve

the area’s natural features. This park would

include a walking path through the woods, along the

stream, as well as natural play areas.

“The Pinnacle is such a rich environment,” said

Conrad. “It would probably be more utilized by the

neighbors. As it develops and land is added, it could

become more of a destination park.”

The concept for the Pinnacle Park has an estimated

cost of $5.75 million.

The city contracted with MKSK to complete a parks

master plan for $125,000. So far, the city has spent

about $30,000 for the concepts developed for the

Beulah and Pinnacle parks.

According to Conrad, the next step would be a more

concrete plan to grade the properties and put in trees,

grass and trails. Any work would need council

approval.

Conrad said she expects plans to start moving this

year.

Township seeks grant to help fund road project

By Dedra Cordle

Staff Writer

Jackson Township will seek funding to

make improvements to Hiner Road.

At the Aug. 20 board of trustees meeting,

Township Administrator Shane

Farnsworth announced they will apply for

a grant through the Ohio Public Works

Commission to resurface approximately

three miles of roadway.

According to Farnsworth, an early estimate

for the project runs at $315,000 and

they believe the grant would be beneficial

to offset some of the cost.

“We always need to apply for grants

because these are our tax dollars and we

are trying to get them back into our community,”

he said.

Because Hiner Road is partially shared

with Scioto Township, they have agreed to

pay a portion of the projected cost but their

contribution would be minimal, said

Farnsworth.

“They only have .43 miles of Hiner

Road,” he said. “The rest is under our jurisdiction.”

In March, the two townships signed a

cooperative agreement to make culvert and

pipe repairs to a section of the road.

Farnsworth said that project is currently

underway and the additional resurfacing

project will round out the work.

“One thing we did not want to do was

repave the road first and then have to come

back and do culvert and pipe repairs a year

later,” he said. “By doing it this way, we

will have new culverts and pipes that will

be useful for 30 years and then a newly

paved road for 25 years.”

The township expects to receive word

from the commission by the end of the year

regarding the grant application. Should the

of 2020.

In related news, the township said they

would partner with the city of Grove City to

make resurfacing repairs to Sonora Drive.

According to the trustees, their portion of

the roughly $210,000 project is not to

exceed $35,000.

In other township news, the trustees

the agreement, the township will remove

while the city will provide 25 tons of salt to

The trustees also approved a fire

Barnes Sr. said the township and fire

department has always assisted the village

with hydrant repairs and maintenance, but

this agreement just “clarifies” who is in

Speed capturing signs to be installed in Urbancrest

By Dedra Cordle

Staff Writer

The village of Urbancrest has a new tool

which residents hope will put an end to

excessive speeding in the community.

At the Aug. 13 meeting, the council

announced the arrival of a speed capturing

sign with an accompanying data collection

feature. The council approved its purchase

in March but manufacturer confusion over

which model was selected and back order

parts delayed its shipment by several

months.

“Obviously, we would have liked to have

had it set up in April,” said councilwoman

Alicia Wiggins, “but we are glad that it is

finally here.”

According to Wiggins, council will have

a contractor with Radarsign, LLC come out

to install the speed capturing sign on First

Avenue “as soon as possible.” It was initially

believed that the village’s street commissioner

would install the mobile sign but

Mayor Joseph Barnes Sr. requested a company

representative do it.

“I think they should put it up, just for

liability sake,” he said.

The council agreed.

When the speed capturing sign is

installed on First Avenue, it will begin collecting

data that will be used to determine

if more steps need to be taken to quell

speed related issues. Wiggins said the data

will capture the number of vehicles on the

road, the peak travel times, and the speed

of the vehicles. It will not capture license

plate numbers.

She also added that the sign will travel

throughout the village streets, particularly

the ones believed to host the most traffic.

“Our plan is to move it around First

Avenue, Augustus Drive, Central Avenue

and Main Street,” said Wiggins.

She said after noting trends, they will

give the collected data to the Franklin

County Sheriff’s Office so they can be out

on patrol during peak hours.

Growth through Education

Each school year floats on a sea of

schedules – from homework assignments

to band practice and even study hall.

Developing good organizational skills

are a key ingredient for success in school

and beyond. While some children may be

naturally more organized than others,

there’s no need to worry if your child is

more of a “messy Marvin” than a “neat

Nancy.” Parents can put routines and systems

in place to help children become more

organized. Follow these strategies to help

you get started:

• Designate a “study space.” Children

should study every night in the same location.

This “study space” doesn’t have to be

in a bedroom, but it should be in a quiet

area with few distractions. Younger students

may want to study near Mom or Dad.

This should be encouraged: Parents can

help motivate children, monitor their

homework progress and even help out if

needed.

• Allocate a “study time.” Setting aside

the same time every night for studying and

doing homework will make it easier for

children to approach the task. Even if

there is no homework assigned for the day,

Very Affordable!

the time should be used to review the day’s

lessons, work on an upcoming project or

read for pleasure. (Tip: The best time is

actually not immediately after school; after

sitting in a classroom all day, most children

need time to blow off a little steam.)

• Get into the planner habit. Nothing

calms school schedule chaos like a daily

planner. Training children to use a planner

is also training them for success. Even

families who home school use planners to

organize daily lessons, chores and activities.

When selecting a planner, parents

should look for ease of use and durability.

As children often carry their world in a

backpack, parents should also consider the

weight and size of their choice. It’s important

to match the planner to the child. The

best student planners are streamlined and

designed with children in mind.

Parents should enlist the help of teachers

as children learn the ropes of planner

use. Teachers can also help reinforce the

planner habit in the classroom.

Organization is the key to school success,

and a few steps is all it takes to help

children move to the head of the class this

year.

Growth through Education

The history of the graduation cap

Graduation ceremonies are a tradition that dates

back to the first high schools and universities. While

many aspects of graduation ceremonies have evolved

over the years, the graduation cap has remained a

hallmark of such ceremonies.

Graduation caps are one of the most visible aspects

of graduation dress. Many scholars believe the mortarboard

style cap graduates don was developed from the

biretta, a similar-looking Italian hat worn by Roman

Catholic clergy. In the 12th and 13th centuries, students

and teachers typically wore clerical clothing

because the church was highly influential at this time.

Medieval universities helped inspire academic dress,

including the familiar graduation cap.

Mortarboards are shaped like a square, perhaps to

give them a scholarly appearance like a book or to represent

the shape of a quad on the campus of England’s

Oxford University, where many graduation dress customs

are believed to have originated. Others theorize

that the mortarboard, which is named after the flat

board used by bricklayers and masons, represents the

skill of a master workman.

Many graduation caps were initially black or gray.

When color photography became the norm in the 20th

century, schools began to use gowns and caps in different

shades because they would show up in photographs.

Schools often coordinate caps and gowns so

their colors reflect their official school colors.

While certain degrees warrant different styles of

gown, cowls and hoods, mortarboard caps are relatively

standard. In addition to the cap, there is a single

button at the top. Tassels hang from these buttons. At

commencement, tassels are traditionally worn on the

right side of the cap and then moved to the left once

graduates receive their diplomas.

Graduation caps are part of the larger scope of academic

dress that comprises school traditions. Millions

of graduates across the globe will don their caps and

toss them into the air later in celebration of their hard

work.

Long-time Messenger staff writer will be missed

Sandi Latimer, a long-time staff writer

for the Columbus Messenger Newspapers,

died on Aug. 19 from several medical complications.

She was 75 years old.

Sandi began working for the Messenger

in the winter of 2001. Throughout her time

with us, she covered numerous communities

including the Hilltop, the Westland

Area Commission, Jackson Township,

Pleasant Township and West Jefferson.

She also covered the Jonathan Alder and

Madison Plains school boards. Her dedication

was unrivaled.

Last winter, Sandi covered the relocation

and restoration of the train depot on

Front Street in Grove City to Century

Village.

“It took the workers hours to get the old

train depot relocated within Grove City,”

said Southwest and Westside Messenger

Editor Andrea Cordle. “It was a cold and

rainy day. Sandi stayed there for hours,

outside, to cover the event.”

Sandi lived in the Lincoln Village area.

She loved her community and loved covering

it for the Westside edition.

“Every year, I could count on Sandi to

put together the Westland Area Business

Association parade preview and parade

marshal article,” said Cordle. “Sandi

always looked forward to covering that

event. It was just out her front door.”

Working with someone for many years,

you get to know them on a personal level.

“What I will miss most about Sandi was

her thoughtfulness,” said Cordle. “I love

dachshunds and have two of them. Sandi

would buy me these little wiener dog trinkets

and she would also send me Facebook

photos and video clips featuring dachshunds.

She knew how to brighten my day,

if just for a moment.”

Madison Messenger Editor Kristy

Zurbrick said Sandi was up for any assignment

you threw at her.

“It didn’t matter if it was covering a

school board or village council meeting or

writing about the retirement of the police

department’s canine officer,” said Zurbrick.

“You could tell she just loved being a

reporter.

“I’ve always admired Sandi’s gusto for

life. She was always out doing something -

going to high school football and basketball

games, listening to live music, volunteering.

She was always seeking and finding

new knowledge, new friendships, and new

experiences.”

“Sandi was interested in everything and

everyone, which made her a good journalist

and writer,” said Columbus Messenger

Managing Editor Rick Palsgrove. “She was

dedicated to her craft, cherished history,

and cared about people.”

In addition to working as a freelance

writer for the Columbus Messenger

Newspapers, Sandi was a staff writer for

United Press International from 1968 —

1990 and she worked as a sports clerk for

the Columbus Dispatch from 1999 — 2009.

She graduated from Kent State University

in 1965 with a degree in broadcast journalism.

I was very pleased to read the article

about the lack of bike paths in the southwest

region of Columbus and Franklin

Grove City councilman, Ted Berry were

well taken. My family travels some of these

roads nearly every day and they are dangerous

for bikers and pedestrians due to a

lack of sidewalks. The Messenger took the

ball and followed up with the city of

Columbus and Franklin Township. This

concern is now on their radar thanks to the

It was interesting to note that just a few

days prior to Berry’s comments, residents

of the area in question were on social

media pointing out their dangerous roadways.

After rants and speculation from

several people, it just died a typical social

media death.

We have a scourge of robo calls.

Last week, I kept track of all these calls.

Here is how it went - 18 on Monday, five on

With all the advances in technology, you

would think there would be a way to stop

As someone with a limited interest in

Bruce Springsteen, I had no pressing desire

to see “Blinded by the Light,” a film often

referred to as an ode to the music and power

of ‘The Boss. I do not dislike the man nor am

I diminishing his talent, but the prospect of

sitting through a two-hour movie dominated

by his music did not whip me into a frenzy.

As I sat in the theater before the show

began, listening to someone singing a

Springsteen song, I told myself it wouldn’t be

that bad, that it had other positive attributes

such as being co-written and directed by

Gurinder Chadha (of “Bend it Like Beckham”

fame) and having a plot revolving around the

experiences of a first and second generation

immigrant family. And you know what? It

wasn’t bad. It was great.

The film, loosely based on the memoir

‘Greetings from Bury Park: Race, Religion

and Rock N’ Roll’ by journalist Sarfraz

Manzoor, takes place in the 1980s where

work shortages, economic hardships and

In Entertainment

The Reel Deal - By Dedra Cordle

white nationalist groups reign supreme in

the UK. Feeling the weight in this triangle

of awful is Javed Khan (Viveik Kalra), a

British-Pakistani teen who longs to leave

his hometown of Luton and become a writer

who makes a difference. His is a dream

unexpressed as he knows his more traditional

parents will not be supportive.

To escape from high familial expectations

and the sting of insults from strangers,

Javed sinks into the world of poetry and

songwriting, finding an escape in his original

words even though he has no confidence

in their worth.

While walking and daydreaming in the

halls at school, Javed runs into a fellow student

named Roops (Aaron Phagura) who is

upset at the potential damage to a beloved

cassette tape. When Javed asks him who the

musician is, the teen replies that it is “The

Boss of us all,” which leaves him dumbfounded.

The following day at lunch, Roops

slides two cassette tapes over to

Javed, both by the artist Bruce Springsteen.

He tells Javed that Bruce is a “direct line to

all that is true” and bequeaths his prized possessions

to his new friend.

At first, Javed has no interest in listening

to this Bruce fellow, but when he gets into an

argument with his father (Kulvinder Ghir)

and throws out all of his poems, he slips on

some head phones, pops in the tape and

presses play. When he hears ‘Dancing in the

Dark,’ and then ‘The Promised Land,’ his

mind transforms, bringing to life the lyrics on

screen as they percolate in his brain. It was

like Bruce was singing directly to him when

he sang of wanting change and feeling so

weak that he just wants to explode. These

scenes could have come across as cheesy but

they are shot and acted so earnestly that it

was touching.

With a message about the transformative

power of music, “Blinded by the Light” toes

the line between endearing and cloying

though it never strays completely into the

latter; it just skims the surface from time to

time. What brings this film back, however,

is the emotional core of Javed and his father

and the push and pull they have between

tradition and modernity.

I did not expect to enjoy this movie as

much as I did. The acting, especially by newcomer

Kalra, is top notch and the secondary

character have decent, albeit slightly underdeveloped

arcs too. But what really makes

this film is its connectivity with

Springsteen’s music, particularly those of

the classic masters. It taps into those times

of uncertainty, anger, hope, love and all

those emotions that music can express:

though cheesy, it really is an ode to the

power of music, especially that of

Springsteen’s. Grade: B+
