Welcome!

Auburn Recreation District (ARD) offers a variety of recreational and educational activities for all age

groups. ARD’s beautiful parks have an abundance of popular facilities, including Sierra Pool, the Ashley

Memorial Dog Park and dozens of acres of ball fields. These parks also play host to a number of events

and activities including Party in the Park, the Harvest Festival, Food Truck Fiesta and many more.

You’ll find something fun and challenging to do in this activity guide -- for toddlers through seniors, and

everyone in between! Our classes are also available online at AuburnRec.com.

WRITING CLASSES FOR ADULTS

WRITING THE NOVEL IN NINE WEEKS (INTRO)

NEW CLASS

This informational workshop will help writers prepare for November,

National Novel – Writing Month (NNWM) by making a plan. We will

cover strategies for finding the time to write and making a schedule

you can stick to. There will also be an opportunity for authors to

network and find a NNWM “accountability buddy”. Anyone considering

joining the “Get that Novel Written” class starting on October 15, 2019

is encouraged to attend.

GET THAT NOVEL WRITTEN

Do you have a book you want to write? Join this fun and supportive

workshop designed to help you get that book out of your head and

onto the page in just nine weeks! Topics include: finding the time, techniques

for plot development, and overcoming writer’s block, as well as

knowing your protagonist and antagonist. Be prepared to do a lot of

writing in class! This workshop is open to fiction and non-fiction writers

of all experience levels.

UKE KANIKAPILA

Konikopila is the Hawaiian tradition of bringing musicians and singers

together to play just for fun! Come join us on the first and third Thursday

of each month to play and sing Hawaiian music with both English

and Hawaiian lyrics. Chords and lyrics are provided for new songs each

session, plus we play our old favorites, too!

This is an entry level HULA class for adults. Hula is a beautiful traditional

dance of the Hawaiian Islands. Basic steps and hand motions

are taught as well as an introduction to culture, language and history.

your mind, body and spirit.

Shotokan Karate of America, Foothill Dojo, is a

non-profit organization that teaches authentic

traditional karate for the mind, body, and

this class offers individual and group training

from Japan, Okinawa, and Ancient China, SKA

Foothill’s Seniors have decades of knowledge

This self-defense class teaches the rules and

principles of motion through self-defense

HISTORICAL FENCING

Learn the art of the sword! Truly an activity for all ages, this exciting

European martial art conditions the entirety of both the mind and

body. Historical fencing relies on skill and timing rather than agility

GROUP PERSONAL TRAINING

WITH BRIAN

These classes with Bryan are semi-private low impact training sessions

that are designed to strengthen core muscles, improve balance, and

enhance agility. In a small gym setting participants will use Indo-boards,

slack lines, hiking, grip bells weights and a variety of other activities with

an aim to more confident posture and effective movement. This low impact

class is perfect for getting back into an exercise program for overall

well-being. Afternoon classes are held outside in the park as well as in

the Stella room when available. Participants are taken from their current

level of fitness and motivated each day to be a little better. Seniors

welcome. A punch card allows students to select days and times that are

convenient for their schedule.

DISCOVERY DAY CAMP operates at the day camp modular at

Recreation Park on most school closures for kindergarten through

sixth grades. It is not open on observed ARD/major holidays.

• 7:00-6:00 for full days // 7:00-12:30 or 12:30-6:00 for half days.

• $20 per family for students not already enrolled in Discovery

Club.

• $28 for full days // $22 for half days (drop-in $2 extra if space is

The ARD tennis program is headed up by the

dynamic duo of Tom and Jennifer Isaac. Both

are USPTA Pro 1 level coaches and bring over

forty years of teaching and playing experience

to the courts.

Students should wear comfortable clothing,

shorts with pockets preferably, and tennis

shoes with no black soles. Bring a hat, bottle

of cold water, and your tennis racquet if you

have one. On the first day we will divide students

who have played before and want to improve their skills, have fun and play proper volleyball. This

and are a bit rusty, that’s okay.

Men and women ages 50 and older are welcome to try out for this advanced volleyball program.

be legal. This program is designed for a faster and higher level of play than the intermediate program.

Players must be able to keep the ball in play during 2 on 2, 3 on 3 and 4 on 4 play. Three-touch

is required.

VOLLEYBALL

Not for beginners! It is suggested that players

have a general knowledge of the current rules,

how to play the positions, and a reasonable

set of volleyball skills. Passing, setting, hitting,

serving and blocking skills are needed as well

as defensive play. Some games will be fast

paced with the ball coming hard off the spike

requiring good reactions. Some games will

have center set play while others may be in a

6/2 or 5/1 set up. Players are asked to call their

own violations and adhere to safe interactive

play which includes not going over the center

line and not dangerous play at all times.

Bump/Set/Hit- three touch strategy is encouraged

as well as even distribution of sets to

hit among men and women. There will be no

continued learning, community involvement

and enrich your life. From aerobics, bingo, card

we have something at every gathering for

senior adults and seniors in training! Some of

training, fall gardening and Medicare review.

AARP is offering an Initial Driver Safety Class

This three week workshop will guide you through the building of a

simple armature form, then using layers of newsprint and paste to build

up detail, and finally painting or applying paper or fabric for a durable

Learn the simple step by step pen and ink technique that will “draw

Using rubber stamps, watercolor washes, pen and ink, and collage

There are various sized rooms for businesses, classes, staff

retreats, meetings, and parties. Group picnic areas and the

pools can be reserved for family reunions, company picnics,

birthdays, and youth groups. Gyms and athletic fields can

be reserved for use by your group. For more information
