Bridport & West Dorset

Open Studios 2019

Venues 1-56

Welcome to Bridport & West Dorset

Open Studios 7 - 15 september 2019

Dear Visitor,

We are delighted to invite you to explore Bridport’s vibrant Art scene with this 21st

Anniversary edition of our renowned Open Studios event – fondly known as BOS 2019.

West Dorset’s Artists, Designers and Makers invite you to share a glimpse into their

creative process. There is a wide variety of visual arts to enjoy including painting, sculpture,

printmaking, illustration, ceramics, jewellery, textiles, glass and video/installation. It’s a

great chance to meet the artists, buy work and discuss private commissions.

We will also have a special curated exhibition "From the Studios" at the LSI (Literary and

Scientific Institute, Bridport) from 4th - 22nd September, along with a digital display of works

from all the participating artists. And to kickstart celebrations, you are invited to join us for

our Grand Launch at the LSI on Wednesday 4th September between 6pm and 9pm. Also,

in a fresh twist, there will be an exciting Fringe Festival with Pop Up events across the town:

look out for signs and more information around Bridport. Isla Chaney (venue 48) will also be

exhibiting her sculptures on the Millennium Green and in Borough Gardens. We hope this

will mark the start of a new Sculpture Trail around Bridport in the coming months.

Whatever your taste in art, we are sure you will find much to enjoy – whether it’s for

investment, pleasure or to support local artists. You will also discover more of the

beautiful scenery tucked away in this special part of the West Country.

our Patron:

FRED CUMING RA

"I am delighted to be patron for the 21st

year of Bridport & West Dorset Open

Studios and give my support to all the

artists and team who are involved in this

event. I wish everyone all the best."

We are proud to welcome Fred Cuming RA

as our Patron for 2019. Fred has a long and

distinguished career. He was the youngest

Member ever elected to the RA in 1969 and has

exhibited widely since his first one-man show at

the Thackeray Gallery, London. He also won

the Grand Prix de l'Art Contemporaries in 1998

and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of the

Arts at the University of Canterbury in 2004.

More importantly, he has helped to pass on his

knowledge to a younger generation of artists,

having taught at several Art Colleges including

Maidstone and Farnham between 1956 to 1983.

We highly recommend you peruse his paintings

at Sladers Yard, venue 32 in West Bay.

The photo was taken by Fred's daughter,

Rachel Cuming, in his Sussex studio.

10. New House Pottery

Clay, Paper & Wood

The creative studios in New House Farm's converted milk parlour produce stunning domestic ware inspired by their beautiful setting in the heart of the

Marshwood Vale. New House Pottery is a co-operative of three potters with distinctive styles. Miles Bell, Chris Reynolds and Fenella Stride create traditional

domestic earthenware and more experimental organic stoneware forms. Also work by students from their popular weekly classes. Lupin Designs is the gorgeous

printing work by fine artist Sophie Sharp who will be showing her addictive screen-printed lampshades, cushion covers, limited-edition prints and cards as well

as small landscape paintings in oil. Made In The Vale (brothers Jon and Martin Hazell) work in local wood – turning, carving and now weaving their own newlyplanted

willows – to make plates, bowls, spoons, baskets and other tactile treasures. Plus cosy pop-up café in the old barn with home-baking, teas, coffees

and our own apple juice.

19. Red Barn Studios - West Chelborough Group

Drawing, Printmaking & Painting

Claudia Dharamshi enjoys experimenting with unconventional media and exploits the fluid interactions between materials. She explores surface texture and

layering in her paintings. In recent work she collected and transformed seaweed into inks, inspired by Victorian seaweed albums. Esther Jeanes's paintings are

dominated by the sky with its fascinating array of colour and pattern. Her aim is to invite people to feel that they can step into recognisable landscapes, breathe

the atmosphere and wonder in the beauty of the everyday. Malcolm Giladjian studied Art at Brooke House, Trowbridge. He studied colour and landscapes in

Central France: Cher, the region of Berry and the Loire. He went on to study and paint with Dennis Perrot. He now lives in West Chelborough Dorset, where he

continues to produce impressionistic artwork.

24. Brendon Murless

Sculpture

I create sculptures for both indoor and outdoor settings, ranging from small

mantlepiece sized to large scale garden sculptures. I take inspiration from the

human form, looking at the complexities of what makes us human physically

and emotionally. I portray this by exploring the body in different forms, poses

and materials.

25. Nigel Dawes

Sculpture

I construct sculptural objects from all kinds of plastic items and fragments.

These items are collected from the coastline, countryside and cities. Sometimes

I break down familiar discarded household objects and toys, then rebuild them

into new ideas. As I forage for material, I set rules and limitations to how and

what I use.

31. The Durbeyfield

Mixed (from Batik to Papier Mache) / Oil / Hand Embroidery / Oil, Acrylic & Watercolour

Sue Barnes: Moving from her studio in Gundry Lane, Sue is now able to present her work from The Durbeyfield Hotel. She continues to use varied media, with

her inspiration usually taken from nature. A welcome return to batik has added a new impetus and energy to her work.

Nicola Moeran: I am predominantly a landscape painter and much of my inspiration comes from Dorset's coastline and landscape.

Debbie Tiltman: I was born in Bridport and am basically self-taught. I create original textile pictures using a range of all free-hand embroidery. A lot of my inspiration

is taken from local landscapes, gardens and nature.

Ruta Skrinskiene absorbs the feelings evoked by colour, light and shape and tries to express them on paper, canvas or wooden panels. Her paintings are intuitive,

bold and abstract – done in large gestures and blocks of colour. The Durbeyfield has a cosy bar where you can sample fine ales, wines and beers as well as taste

authentic Klin Klan’sThai cuisine.

Fred Cuming – The 2019 Patron of Bridport & West Dorset Open Studios

"My work is about responses to the moods and atmospheres generated by landscape, still life or interior. I am interested in the developments of 20th Century

painting, in abstraction, that has been present in all movements, and in new ideas and art forms. My philosophy is that the more I work, the more I discover.

Drawing is essential as a tool of discovery; skill and mastery of technique are also essential, but only as a vocabulary and a means towards an idea." Fred Cuming

Pippa is a Bridport based Illustrator-artist. Using predominantly pen and

Indian ink as a medium, she focuses her work towards nature and,

specifically, the botanical – creating images that allow the viewer to stand

and stare into a work, to reveal its' hidden details and influences.

I’m passionate about landscape. Come and see new

experimental work inspired by the Dorset countryside

and pieces evoking Finnish forests in winter and

summer. My textiles are hand dyed and printed silks,

49. Rob Morgan & Ellie Preston

Oil Painting

Rob’s large oil paintings are inspired by the joy of colour and the physicality of

paint, expressing feelings in a classically abstract manner. The style is vigorous

and gestural. Colours mix, merge and meander creating pictorial spaces, which

might seem familiar or even evoke a memory. He will also be showing smaller

paintings, pastel drawings and prints.

Ellie takes a formal and subtle approach to answering the questions posed

by abstract painting. She is driven by a need to discover the consequences

of her actions; the colour, the tonal variations and the forms. She works in oil

on board, currently on a smaller scale. If it seems right to her, it has meaning,

but that isn’t prescribed.
