IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT
DILIGENT AND PROACTIVE RESPONSE TO CHANGE
As a wise Greek philosopher once said, “The only constant is change.” As spring slowly
changes to summer, I write on behalf of the NCADA Board of Directors to encourage all
dealers to continue to be engaged in diligently anticipating and preparing for the changes
in our industry and within our dealerships. At NCADA, we are excited about back-toback
years of record sales in North Carolina but, as an industry, we must remain vigilant in
watching and exploring new trends that could impact our profitability. As the chairman
of NCADA, I encourage you to join us at NCADA, participating in the following ways:
Stay vigilant and engaged in emerging trends.
Late last month, a group of dealers met to discuss developing events that could impact dealers nationwide. Dealers
discussed the advent of electric and autonomous vehicles, ride sharing programs, the factory’s role in online
selling, industry disruptors and challenges to the current dealership model. While the conversation was very
prospective or “futuristic,” it is critical to continue the conversations about events that could significantly alter
the current dealership model. Change is certainly going to occur; our objective is to be proactive in addressing
and responding to such change.
Join the Discussion at Amelia Island
NADA recently tasked Glenn Mercer, auto industry investment advisor and consultant, to prepare an analysis of
several challenges that will impact the auto industry in the 3-5 years ahead. Mercer’s 70-page report will be the
underpinning of his comments to the dealers on Tuesday, June 20th in Amelia Island. Other keynote presenters
include, Tim Russi of Ally Financial, and a representative from Google.
With countless recreational activities and offerings for dealers and their families, the Amelia Island convention is
sure to be a special family vacation and a great setting for insightful industry discussions. I hope that you can join
us.
Be Involved with your local Legislator
As part of the April meeting of the NCADA Board of Directors, the members had the opportunity to walk the halls
of the General Assembly to meet with their local elected officials. The impact of the meeting was incredible and
as a direct result, the NCADA franchise bill was put on a fast track for a vote in the NC House. Your input and
contact with your local officials makes a huge difference.
Congratulate and thank to Doug Wilkinson and Glenn Boyd
During the Amelia Island Convention, NCADA will recognize industry stalwarts Doug Wilkinson and Glenn
Boyd with the NCADA Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honor bestowed on NCADA members. Both
Wilkinson and Boyd have been mainstays in our industry and their recognition will be one of the Amelia Island
highlights.
In closing, I thank each of you for contributing to the tradition of leadership that has developed within the North
Carolina auto industry over the past 80 years. This tradition of engagement makes the Tar Heel state, the “Greatest
State in the Nation for Franchise Dealers.” It is my pleasure and honor to be part of NCADA , and the industry
traditions that have been crafted by North Carolina dealers

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
LEGISLATIVE SESSION OFF TO A SUCCESSFUL START FOR NCADA!
The 2017 session of the North Carolina General
Assembly convened in late January and is now
at the midpoint of the session. NCADA and
North Carolina’s franchised dealers have an active
legislative agenda this year addressing several issues
of interest to our industry. Dealers are encouraged
to make sure that you are keeping up to date on
important legislative activity by reviewing the
NCADA Weekly Legislative Update.
NCADA Legislation Advancing
NCADA requested the introduction of four separate
bills in this year’s session to address franchise
law issues and various regulatory concerns. The
highlight of NCADA’s proactive agenda this year is
NCADA’s franchise bill which will implement key
changes to the franchise law including provisions
to address recalls and dealership facility upgrades.
Other legislation introduced at NCADA’s request
covers expansion of the DMV electronic lien system
to certain lienholders to better notate secondary
liens as well as the longstanding issues surrounding
“title in transit.” All NCADA requested legislation
advanced in time to meet the legislature’s crossover
deadline which requires a bill to pass out of its
chamber of origin by a date certain in order to remain
eligible for further consideration for the remainder of
the 2017-2018 legislative session. Again, please look
for the NCADA Weekly Legislative Update for the latest
status on NCADA requested legislation and other
important issues.

NCADA Board Visits General Assembly
As part of the spring meeting of the NCADA Board
of Directors in early April, board members visited the
Legislative Building to meet with local legislators.
Board members discussed NCADA’s legislative
priorities for the session with the House and Senate
sponsors of NCADA’s requested franchise legislation
as well as various members of legislative leadership.
To end the day, the NCADA Board delegation
received special gallery recognition from the House
of Representatives during its floor session.

2017 4TH ANNUAL CONTROLLERS SEMINAR - THANK YOU TO ALL INVOLVED!
NCADA’s 4th Annual Controllers Seminar, held
on April 20 at The Koury Convention Center in
Greensboro, was a great success! There was a great
turnout with over 200 people in attendance.
The day kicked off
with opening keynote
speaker Mark Vitner’s
(pictured left) talk on
the “2017 Economic
Update: Forecasting and
Data Analytics.” Mark
was followed by Jason
Wilkinson, and Jon
Hansen who provided a
federal and state income
tax update. Participants
then attended a slate of educational breakout
sesssions, including a session on the “Top 10 Legal
Issues for Controllers and Dealership Accountants,”
presented by Bass Sox Mercer, Attorneys at Law
representative Shawn Mercer. NCADA would like
to thank Mr. Mercer and all of our outstanding guest
speakers throughout the day!
A highlight for many was the exciting NCADA
official version of Price is Right. It was an eye opening
experience for many of our younger controllers to
see just how much the prices of cars and other items
in the industry have changed over time. One lucky
winner, LeAnne Issette, of Lee Motor Group walked
away with the grand prize, a 50 inch flat screen smart
TV.
To close out the day, keynote speaker Cliff Banks shared
his take on the “State of the Automotive Industry.”

was a resounding success, thanks in no small part to the

NCADA Chairman Mike Alford led a meeting of
the NCADA Board of Directors April 10-11, 2017
in Raleigh. As part of the meeting, the Board
members visited the General Assembly to meet
with their local elected officials. Members were
also recognized by North Carolina Speaker Tim
Moore from the floor of the NC House. In addition,
as a direct resulting of the various advocacy by the
Board members, the NCADA requested franchise
bill was heard and passed in the NC House the
following week.”.
While in Raleigh the members met with a
respresentative from the NC Attorney General’s
office as well as the Department of Public
Instruction. The Board explored several pending

industry issues and reviewed plans for a
possible “NCADA Audit Helpdesk” as well as
an advisory panel for the automotive industry
in working with the NC Attorney General’s
office.
In closing, the Board voted to hold the June
2018 annual family convention in Big Sky
Montana. 2018 will be the first time in nearly
30 years that the NCADA convention will be
held in the western part of the US. Chairman
Mike Alford and Vice Chairman Tom Hunter
are very engaged in planning an action packed,
education program for dealers next June in
Big Sky.
