DEETLEFS WINE ESTATE

A maiden voyage from Europe on

3 October 1752 was the start of a legacy

and set in motion the story of the second

oldest wine estate in South Africa owned

by the same family - Deetlefs Wine Estate.

Since then each of the seven generations

contributed in their own unique way to

the success of the winery today.

Situated at the foot of the Du Toitskloof

mountains in the Breedekloof valley,

Rawsonville, the farm and vineyards

bear the indelible mark of the different

generations. But, just as the winery and

land bare a mark, the family has also

been shaped by the land.

“A golden thread runs through our

history, reflecting a boldly individual

approach, a strong set of values and

a long-term focus. Since 1994, we

put more focus on the international

markets and today more than 80%

of our wines are exported. Currently

it is my responsibility to create more

opportunities for generations to come

and to tell the story,” says owner and

winemaker Kobus Deetlefs.

Deetlefs Wine Estate has been exporting

their wine since 1999 and the estate

rakes in award after award for their

superb wine and winery. Five of their

wines scored top marks in the recent Tim

Atkin 2019 report (out of

2 115 wines tasted), three wines

achieved top awards at the China Wine

and Spirits Awards 2019. The Stonecross

Range from Deetlefs Wine Estate has

recently been awarded six gold medals

at the Gold Wine Awards 2019 and at

the recent Old Mutual Trophy Wine

Show the Deetlefs Reserve Chenin Blanc

2018 received an amazing 88% and the

Deetlefs Familie 80%. To name only a few.

Their secret? Good agricultural practices

are a combined form of art, science, skill

and passion. “It’s something we take

very seriously here at Deetlefs Wine

Estate. These practices are the important

foundation assisting our winemaker in

producing wines of consistently high

quality,“ Kobus adds.

“One of the greatest challenges and

achievements was turning the familyowned

wine estate into a dynamic wine

group, based on the culture and values

of the Deetlefs family. Something that

was succesfully done.”
