VLP SAFETY TIPS

Officer Glentzer patrols VLP and shared the following valuable tips:

• DO NOT OPEN your DOOR for solicitors. As a community we should not

encourage them by opening our doors. If a solicitor refuses to leave your

property, please call 911 immediately to report them.

• Promply collect your packages when they are delivered, as thieves are

more than ready to steal these parcels.

• When shopping or stopping at the bank, be aware of your surroundings

and ALWAYS lock your car.

• Remove valuables and lock your car at night. Unlocked vehicle doors

make for an easy target.

• Activate your home alarm when leaving

• Lock all windows and doors before leaving

• Place alarm company signs in visible places and keep a VLP sticker

displayed on all vehicles.

• Call 713-221-6000 with non-emergency issues and 911 with emergencies

• Let our very own Deputy Glentzer (713-471-1882) know if you will be

away so he can keep an eye on your home

CFISD EARNS NINTH STRAIGHT

TEXAS SMART SCHOOLS 5-STAR RATING

Cypress-Fairbanks ISD earned its ninth consecutive five-star rating in the

Texas Smart Schools Initiative, an online resource that aims to improve

education by identifying Smart Schools that are both effective and

efficient. Gathering data on both academic progress and spending, each

school district and campus is assigned a Smart Score of one to five stars. A

five-star rating indicates the strongest level of relative academic progress

combined with the lowest relative spending. CFISD is one of 51 public

and charter school districts across the state to earn a five-star rating. In

addition, CFISD has earned the highest possible rating in all nine years of

the Texas Smart Schools program. Texas Smart Schools uses three-year

averages to obtain more stable and persistent measures of academic

progress and spending. The 2019 Texas Smart Schools results are based

on data from the 2015-2016, 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years.

JUNIOR POLICE ACADEMY CONNECTS

YOUNG STUDENTS WITH OFFICERS

In finding new ways to be engaged with the CFISD community, the

district’s Police Department recently completed its first-ever Junior

Police Academy, giving students a week of learning and activities and

helping foster the relationship between officers and their constituents.

Created for 9-and-10-year-old students, the academy featured sessions

at Cypress Ridge (June) and Cypress Springs (July) high schools.

Originally set up for 45 participants per session, the academy swelled to

96 in total attendance. Participants were grouped together into smaller

squads, with officers serving as mentors and interacting with cadets on

a personal level.

Officers and cadets alternated between outdoor activities, hands-on

instruction and classroom training each day. Session topics included

social media safety, stereotyping and bullying, gang prevention, drug

prevention and gun safety. Cadets learned mapping skills and tourniquet

application among others, while other activities emphasized team

building and problem solving. Physical training was incorporated daily,

with cadets competing in an obstacle course. Fun activities were also fit

into the week, giving campers and officers even more opportunities to

interact and connect. Cadets were also treated to unique meet-and-greet

opportunities with local public safety first responders. Police pilots and

tactical flight officers with the Texas Department of Public Safety flew

and landed a helicopter at each campus, while Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire

Department firefighters and paramedics showcased a firetruck.

Members of the Cypress Creek EMS visited cadets at Cypress Springs,

teaching a hands-on lesson on tourniquets. Feedback was positive and

plans are already in place for possible academy expansion in the future.

The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities

that allow them to:

• Try new things. • Provide service to others.

• Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards.

Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as

individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility

and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made,

peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.

Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting

through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which

help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam

Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout

Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old)

and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically

meet weekly.

Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools

including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley,

Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan,

Tipps, Walker and Wilson.

Copperfield Church, Crossbridge Church, Cy-Fair Kiwanis Club, Deerfield

Village HOA, LDS Bear Creek and Copperfield Wards, Middlegate Village

SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL

CHILDHOOD OBESITY AWARENESS MONTH

National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month offers opportunities for

families to prevent childhood obesity early and to address the issue early.

Children who have obesity issues are more likely to have those same

issues as adults. Addressing them now prevents lifelong health issues

such as diabetes, certain cancers, heart and sleep disorders.

Children with obesity may face physical, emotional and financial

obstacles in the future, as well. Find out how to take action at www.cdc.

gov.

NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH

Disasters don’t plan ahead, but you can. The entire month of

September observes National Preparedness Month. No matter where

you live, you are subject to disasters. Natural disaster and man-made

disasters affect everyone and will cause severe damage and endanger

lives. Hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, landslides, wildfires, hot

spells or cold spells are all natural disasters that can be deadly to

people and property. Man-made disasters such as terrorism, crime,

power outages, famines or war are just as terrifying as any natural

disasters. Preparation is essential for the safety of you and your family.

It can also ensure valuable personal possessions are taken care of

properly before you lose them.

Family First: Deciding how long a disaster will last and the after-effects

are the first step in preparation. Depending on the type of emergency,

you may need food and water for a few days. Food that is easily stored

and prepared is critical during a disaster. When disaster strikes, you want

to make sure your family has water to last for a specified duration of time.

It is recommended each family member have 1 gallon of water per day

to remain hydrated. Having proper eating utensils, small stoves that run

off propane or a grill for cooking, matches, candles, blankets and extra

clothes are a few items to pack away in a safe, accessible place. Try not

to forget about family activities! Pack away some board games, cards or

books to help the time pass by. Having things for children to do will also

keep their mind at ease. More than half of all parents lack a designated

meeting place to fall back to in an emergency. Family fire drills may seem

silly, but they do serve a purpose. Unfortunately, many Americans don’t

have a list of emergency contact numbers either. Make sure the entire

family has memorized any numbers that are of significance in the case

of disaster.

Personal Property: Finally, personal property is always a concern when

natural disaster hits. Though it’s not always possible, you can do a few

things to make sure you save the valuable documents that mean the

most to you. If you have a computer, you can scan any documents and

put them on an external drive. Store the drive someplace safe and dry.

With today’s technology, we can save our photo memories more easily.

If saving photographs of family is important, consider scanning them on

an external so you can reprint them if the originals are lost or destroyed.

Most importantly, make sure your insurance policies are up-to-date. You

can visit your insurance agent any time to review what you have, what is

covered and what options you have in the event a disaster destroys your

home or vehicles.

Preparing for a disaster might seem like an impossible task and we

hope you never have to experience one. But if you do, government

agencies like FEMA and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention,

as well as organizations like the American Red Cross, provide excellent

websites with enough information to get you started. These websites

also offer suggestions on how to plan in specific instances, like

being without power for weeks. Your insurance companies will also

have information you can use as you prepare. Insurance companies

encourage families to prepare for disasters. It makes their jobs easier

once the emergency is over and it also gives you peace of mind that

you were covered correctly.
