TERRITORY

LASER

CLINIC

These

non-invasive

therapies

are relaxing

with no pain

or downtime,

benefiting men

and women of

any age and

skin type.

Territory Laser Clinic’s team of fully qualified

Dermal Therapists have a new and exclusive

treatment for anyone looking to treat skin

concerns including ageing and acne – LED

light therapy using a medical device called

Omnilux, the only one of its kind in the

Northern Territory.

Omnilux Combination Light Therapy –

which uses various wavelengths of light –

achieves an effective outcome and greater

value in a shorter period. Most clients will

have eight treatments over the course of

four weeks, with visible results after the first

treatment.

As we age, the structure of our skin starts

changing due to a combination of factors

such as sun damage, poor nutrition, highstress

levels, exposure to environmental

pollution, smoking and alcohol. As a result,

this can lead to dryness, wrinkles and

changes in colour and texture. Omnilux

light therapy targets specific cells to repair

the skins supportive structures, reversing

the effects of ageing by restoring collagen

and elastin levels, leading to a younger and

healthier appearance.

Clinical studies have shown that over 80

percent of subjects reported a softening

of fine lines, and 75 percent reported

improvement in skin softness and

smoothness.

Territory Laser Clinic specialises in

the treatment of acne and now offer

Combination Light Therapy to neutralise

the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria

responsible for inflammation, decrease

pore size and stabilise oil production. After

a series of treatments, 70 – 80 percent

of acne lesions will clear. This treatment

is suitable for anyone suffering mild to

moderate inflammatory acne, including

young adolescents and adults.

Also available exclusively at Territory Laser

Clinic is Allumera, a light-activated topical

cream designed to use in conjunction with

Omnilux to improve the overall appearance

of the skin. Allumera offers proven results to

fine lines, wrinkles, elasticity, skin tone, skin

texture, discolouration and pore size.

These non-invasive therapies are relaxing

with no pain or downtime, benefiting men

and women of any age and skin type. Each

session takes approximately 20 minutes,

and patients can go back to their normal

routine immediately after. In conjunction

with cosmeceutical-grade skin care, the

Dermal Therapist will customise a regime

specific to the patient’s needs. Omnilux

light therapy delivers excellent results,

including a clearer, brighter and smoother

complexion.

KEEPING

THE TERRITORY

COOL

FOR OVER 50 YEARS!

PENGUIN ICE IS THE LARGEST ICE

SUPPLIER IN THE NORTHERN TERRITORY

AND HAS BEEN KEEPING TERRITORIANS

COOL FOR OVER HALF A CENTURY,

PROVIDING EMERGENCY SUPPORT SINCE

CYCLONE TRACY IN 1974.

Penguin Ice is committed

to employing locally

and supporting local

community groups.

Whilst the name will be recognised

by most, the business has seen a

major overhaul in recent times and

has emerged as a Territory household

name under the direction of Darwinborn

Managing Director and NT

Young Achiever Small Business finalist,

Nathan Cooper.

Being the only locally owned and

operated ice manufacturer in

Darwin, Penguin Ice is committed to

employing locally and supporting local

community groups.

“Supporting local business has many

advantages,” said Nathan. “Instead of

money flowing outside of the Territory,

money circulates back into the local

economy, supporting other local

businesses and ensuring more jobs are

available for local residents.”

Their well-known 5kg tube ice

bags with a handle for ease of

transportation and longer lasting 4kg

block ice products are a favourite with

the locals and have likely made an

appearance on your recent camping,

fishing, BBQ or outdoor adventures.

All packaging is fully LDPE4 foodapproved

recyclable plastic, helping to

reduce their carbon footprint.

Penguin Ice also supplies major

events in the NT including Bass In The

Grass and the V8 Supercars, as well

as supplying a range of businesses

from major multinationals including

Woolworths, Coles, BWS, Liquorland,

BP and Cellarbrations to smaller

local events, corner stores and local

commercial fishermen.

Selling a frozen product in the

Territory might seem easy but

manufacturing and storing in the

harsh weather conditions of the Top

End is an ongoing challenge. There is

considerable infrastructure behind the

scenes that goes into making a single

bag of ice. Strict criteria and testing

procedures, alongside sophisticated

automated handling processes which

ensures ice is formed, bagged and

sealed without any human contact

for the highest quality product. With a

manufacturing capacity of 70 tonnes

per day, Penguin Ice also has a cold

store capable of holding up to five

days of production as a back-up to

ensure the eski will never be empty.

And for the most important question,

what would we find in Nathan’s own

eski?

“You will most likely find a few cans of

Brookvale Union Ginger Beer, bottle of

Grey Goose vodka, soda water, fresh

limes and of course, Penguin Ice.”

Celebrating 10 years in 2019, Darwin Life has printed 95 editions, snapped

117,600 photos, written 25,270 articles and has been a trusted advertising

vehicle for thousands of businesses. We hope you have enjoyed the journey

Over the years, Darwin Life has evolved into more than just a magazine. Our events portfolio include the Darwin Life

& Home Expo, Darwin Glam Cup Carnival, Action Deck V8 Supercars, NT Big Boys Toys Expo, SkyCity Melbourne Cup,

Health & Fitness Expo and Top End Ninja Obstacle Course.

It’s been a wild ride and like any other local business, we too have experienced our fair share of ups and downs since

the first edition was published in November 2009. Beginning as a monthly publication for seven years, then bi-monthly,

then quarterly, then bi-annually, and now as a special annual edition for the 10th Anniversary, the magazine has evolved

with the market, the economy and the publishing industry. With social media as the biggest competitor, Darwin Life has

embraced the platform and enjoys a strong local following of 22,000+ across Facebook and Instagram. Marrying these

numbers with a traditional print product has maintained the brand in the market.

For the 10th Anniversary Edition, enjoy Darwin Life with sister publication NT Life as a ‘flip’ magazine bringing community

together to celebrate our tropical city.

Thank you to our readers, our clients, previous/current staff, contributors, writers, photographers, designers, friends and

families for the past 10 years. Cheers to many more!

With a website relaunch designed to better

offer their training and coaching services,

Annette and Doug Gillanders at Biznorth are

using video technology and social media to

reach out to their clients.

“We service about 20 percent of clients

remotely,” said Annette. “Of course, we

still love to do face-to-face work. There is

nothing lovelier than seeing your client’s

face when they take on new learnings.”

While some may say the Territory is

experiencing tough economic times,

Annette disagrees, calling it a ‘New Normal’.

“We’ve just come off a major project high.

I don’t believe anyone planned for what

followed completion - not the government,

certainly not business. People get caught

in the high of the project, forgetting it is

finite, and have over-committed financially.

A ‘New Normal’ will shake the branches of

businesses that have always done it this

way. They will resist the idea that they need

to provide well-executed tenders and be

more accountable, and I don’t see this is

as a bad thing. It’s how we can make sure

we’re doing the best we can with what we

have now.”

INSPIRING

BUSINESS

PEOPLE

Biznorth recently launched a campaign

called ‘Love Your Business© So Others Will

Love It Too’.

“The ‘New Normal’ brings opportunity to

think differently, to lift your head up and

think about what others see. Do your staff

feel valued, do your customers see and feel

your fatigue and do they hear the same

negative language used? We say NO. We

support business owners to think differently,

to fall in love with their business again.”

“Have a discovery session with us. Meet our

love and happiness champion, Lucy. We

will support you to revitalise your business

passion. There are little things that can be

done too and it’s the little things that count.

We will show you those little things within

your business.”

Biznorth strongly recommends businesses

look at increasing their network activity with

other local businesses.

BEFORE

tips to

losing

weight

AFTER

1. Make small changes - don’t attack

everything in one go. Pick a small goal

like drinking more water or eating more

vegetables rather than a complex goal.

2. Have a plan - work out what you need

to do to achieve that goal

3. Eat vegetables at every meal - most

people don’t eat veges at breakfast. Add

zucchini to your porridge. It increases

fibre intake and keeps you fuller for

longer

4. Drink more water - keep a water bottle

with you and consider swapping one of

your normal daily beverages with water.

Surprising how it all adds up

5. Hit 10k steps a day. Having exercise

goals are fantastic. But most people

would benefit greatly just by increasing

their NEAT levels. Especially if you sit at a

desk all day

6. Don’t cut out food groups. Lots of diets

and cookie cutter plans preach cutting

carbs etc etc. That’s great for the short

term, what happens after? What have you

learned?

7. Choose something sustainable for YOU.

Everyone is different. For some people,

paleo is the go or IIFYM. Find your niche,

try different things but remember, if you

can’t see yourself doing it in five months

let alone five years. Don’t do it at all.

8. Don’t call them cheat meals. People are

so quick to demonize food. Food is food,

it’s not cheating. So don’t treat it as such.

9. Forgive yourself. You’re going to stuff

up. You’re going to have a bad day and

eat every thing in sight plus another 1000

calories more. It’s ok. You don’t need to

starve yourself tomorrow. You do need

to recognize what that trigger was and

move on.

10. Remember it’s a marathon not a

sprint. You’re in this journey for the long

haul. This isn’t about transformation. This

is about lifestyle. This is about long term

health. Treat it as such.

DRIVER THOMAS MAXWELL.

Not so long ago, Tom said his dream was racing European Formula 1 or nothing. Casey Stoner

and Daniel Ricciardo’s success had already proven Aussies could succeed in Europe and this was

encouraging. But aspirations can take a different turn very quickly in the motorsport industry.

Tom’s love for motorsport really took off when he began racing go-karts at 10 years old.

His competitive spirit was quickly drawn into the thrill of racing and it wasn’t long until he

outgrew go-karts and found himself whipping around the track of the Australian Formula Ford

competition. Tom’s rapid success caught the eye of an English racing team and at just 17 he made

the leap half way around the world to compete in the British Formula 3 competition. From here,

Tom advanced to race in the European Formula Renault Championship in pursuit of his ultimate

victory – racing Formula 1. Relocating to the other side of the world to race just two divisions

below Formula 1 on some of the world’s best tracks is a rev-head’s dream, and this fact isn’t lost

on Tom.

straight in the deep end and see if I would float or sink or

swim.’

Idling at the traffic lights I often try to imagine what a driver is

feeling sitting at the grid before a big race. Tom laughs at my

comparison and says after handling race cars it’s hard to get a

kick out of driving the family Hilux to Woolies.

‘When you put your foot down and nothing happens it’s quite

disappointing so you don’t get that same thrill when you give

it a rev.’

Rather, waiting on the grid to start his first international

race was utterly nerve wracking. Staring down the track in a

completely different car half way around the world from home

understandably opened the door for doubt to creep in and

ask; what if you’re just not good enough? Tom

described these last few moments before the

race like a test. The last opportunity to cram

the game plan in whilst he still had the spare

brain capacity. Going over where he wanted

to make a move on the inside of a competitor

and focussing on what he wanted to achieve

helped dispel the nerves.

‘Once the lights go and it all starts you don’t

have time to be thinking about that, it’s all

subconscious from then on.’

Although starting out amongst international

competition was daunting, it wasn’t the

biggest hurdle Tom felt he faced in the move.

‘The driving level (overseas) itself wasn’t too

bad to adjust to, it was more the living on the

other side of the world away from family that

was more tricky.’

Moving so far from family comforts in Darwin

was a big learning curve, but like any 17-yearold,

Tom had a survival meal up his sleeve.

‘My speciality was a stir fry. A few vegies,

noodles and stir fry sauce, just bang it all in a

pan and you’re ready to go!’

The financial logistics of racing in Europe was

another huge obstacle in Tom’s career. With

so much money involved in motorsport it’s

often assumed drivers are being paid well for

the stickers on their car, but this is far from

reality for up and coming drivers.

‘Unfortunately, that’s the way motorsport

is… it doesn’t really give a lot of people a fair

opportunity to have a crack at it… it’s super

expensive if you don’t have the right support,’

Tom explained.

By super expensive, he means he wasn’t paid

for any driving in Europe and had to source

funds for all car maintenance, mechanics,

engineers and damage. On top of this,

finding sponsors in Europe to back a young

Australian driver was no easy feat.

‘A lot of the connections I had in Australia

didn’t have much benefit being promoted on

the other side of the world.’

After learning how cut throat and expensive

the motorsport industry is for young drivers, I

was curious to know whether he still felt the

dream was Formula 1 or nothing.

For the first time in the interview, I heard his

heart sink a little as he chuckled, ‘That might

be a little bit of an old dream.

‘I would’ve loved to continue pursuing F1 but

it wasn’t financially achievable to be able to

go up to the next few levels.

‘At the moment it’s solely about becoming a

professionally paid racing driver.

‘That’s why I’ve come back to race Porsche

in Australia, to pursue this different style of

racing referred to as GT or sport racing.’

Tom admitted putting the Formula 1 dream

on the back burner was hard, but he’s not one

to be defeated and dwell on disappointment.

His determination to gain a foothold in the

racing industry is tangible when he talks

about his current opportunity in Australia’s

Porsche Carrera Cup. His optimism rarely

falters and he doesn’t view the transition to

a Porsche double the weight of his previous

open wheeled car as a setback, but rather

another challenge to overcome.

So, what’s next?

Despite the extraordinary experiences Tom’s

had he’s still an Australian racing die-hard

at heart and is looking forward to the

opportunity to race Bathurst.

‘It’s something I’ve watched as a kid for a lot

of years so to be able to have a go myself is

going to be pretty special.’

Looking further down the track, Tom

is aiming to return to Europe in the

international Porsche championship. But for

now, when he’s not preparing to face off on

Aussie tracks, you’ll find Tom lapping up the

NT lifestyle either reeling in barramundi or

watching Essendon, with an occasional CC

and Dry in hand.

Deep down, the thought of motorsport not

being a part of his life is so unimaginable Tom

will throw everything he has at it and there’s

a sense it won’t be long before Thomas

Maxwell is a household name.

ESTELLE’S

FLORIST

ESTELLE’S FLORIST BEGAN ITS JOURNEY WITH A SMALL POP-UP SHOP IN

CASUARINA SHOPPING SQUARE DURING CHRISTMAS 2017.

Get it

fresh, pick

up from

the best!

Finally fulfilling a life-long dream of owning her

own florist shop, Estelle was then on a mission.

During this time, along with the excitement

and enjoyment fresh flowers brought into her

busy schedule, she took on the task of bumping

through all the road blocks and popped up in the

Gateway Shopping Centre for a short time before

establishing her full time florist centres at Hibiscus

Shoppingtown, Coolalinga Central and Allora

Gardens Nursery, where she is grateful to have an

amazing, talented, skilled and passionate team

working in her business supporting her lifelong

goals.

Estelle and her team have a “yes, we can” approach;

specialising in unique gifts and fresh flowers from

natives, lilies and tropicals to roses, dried and

artificial arrangements, gorgeous scented candles,

diffusers, chocolates, baby and gift baskets,

Kokedama, terrariums and potted indoor plants,

statues and more. From decorated archways,

flower-framed mirrors, photos booths, beautiful

flower crowns, fresh flowers for cake decorating

and rose petals for the special someone.

Fresh flowers clean the air, brighten up rooms

and moods and can complement interior design.

It’s commonly known that the colour green can

help reduce stress levels - a big positive of indoor

potted plants - but adding a boost of natural

colour with fresh flowers can also promote

stronger emotions of wellbeing and happiness

due to their association with positive life events.

Flower power is so potent that, for some patients, it

may prove to be a viable treatment option for mild

forms of depression, stress and anxiety.

Estelle’s Florist delivers throughout the Territory,

Australia and overseas and are registered

and certified florists with Interflora and Petals

worldwide.

Pop into any store or purchase the beautiful

flowers and products online, hand selected and

The benefits of strength training

for 50+

I struggle to get off the ground

when gardening, I struggle to get

out of my chair, I’m worried that if I

fall I won’t be able to get back up. If

you think these things, or are even

worried that this might be you

one day then strength training is a

good place to start your journey.

Journal studies in the Health

Promotion Perspectives (2019), The

Journal of Lifestyle Medicine (2010),

and the Journal of Extension (2013)

all agree that Strength Training

improves body image, muscle

mass, bone health, mental health,

and controls body fat in older

adults.

What is Strength Training?

Strength training is a form of

physical conditioning, otherwise

known as resistance training. An

example of this is lifting weights,

which exercises the muscles by

being worked against an opposing

force. Using machines at your local

gym, doing Olympic weightlifting

and using free weights (such as

dumbbells) are all examples of

strength training, so chances are,

you have done it before.

The facts:

• Strength training increases

bone density, and strengthens

tendons and ligaments.

Developing strong bones

reduces the risk of developing

osteoporosis and decreases the

risk of bone fractures (Health

Promotion Perspectives, 2019).

• Enables you to continue to

have more independence as

you get older

• Helps you sleep better

• Improves your balance,

meaning less chance of injury.

How often should I do strength

training?

If you are just starting your strength

training journey, you might want

to start with 2 days of strength

training, with at least one day rest

in between. As you get stronger

(and you will!) you can start adding

days and keep building your

confidence!

Start your Strength training journey

today!

Recently moving to a new home at

the new location next to Turbo’s Tyres

means you could spend that waiting

time for your car productively by fitting

in a workout next door!

“The new location has a way

better vibe and is definitely a more

welcoming environment,” said Nikki.

Humpty Doo Fitness is Nikki’s second

home and having two kids, that

welcoming environment also means

the gym is family friendly. A creche

upstairs that operates Monday to

Friday between 9.00am and 10.00am

gives parents the opportunity to

practice some self-care by either

participating in a group class

(including the Les Mills program) or

working out in the gym area, featuring

free weights, cardio machines

memberships and is open 7 days a

THE ADDING VALUE CFO

After completing an accounting degree, The

Adding Value CFO Principal, Michele Bain

decided to study for the CPA qualification. Upon

completion and finding little work opportunities

in Darwin, Michele decided to create her

own work and help small business owners

understand their finances. After studying the

CPA public practice program and completing

the CPA Public Practice Intensive course, Michele

was able to go out on her own with a public

practice licence.

“I am passionate about helping small businesses

- not only with bookkeeping but also with

management accounting techniques including

forecasts, budgeting, business planning and

virtual CFO (Chief Financial Officer) services,” said

Michele. “In my business planning sessions, the

business owner and I discuss strategic outcomes

and how these can be met. We examine both

qualitative and quantitative data to get a clearer

picture of where the business currently stands,

then we set strategic goals and have regular

catchups to monitor these outcomes.

“I helped my father with his roofing business

and set up my husband’s plumbing business

by not only setting up the accounting process

and software but also through marketing, so I

understand about the small business owner’s

late nights of worrying about cash flow.”

With 27 years of accounting experience working

‘in’ the business for various business structures

and industries, instead of purely public

practice, Michele has a strong understanding

of organisational needs. The Adding Value CFO

also offers virtual support with bookkeeping,

bookkeeping training and Virtual CFO support.

“I decided to complete a ‘train the trainer’ course

last year so I can train small business owners on

their accounting software such as Quickbooks,

of these accounting software packages.”

“I specialise in the hospitality industry as well as

Here at UB Cool we like to keep our feet on

But it’s not all about installing split systems,

UB Cool proudly stand behind every airconditioner

Jim Kelly

Focusing at first on licensed premises,

Visual Security quickly grew to managing

17 venues within 12 months. The company

has since diversified, offering a wide range

of services catering for any security request

anywhere in the Territory. This includes

a specialised K9 unit - the only one of its

kind in the NT - utilised for construction

and civil project sites, remote schools and

bush airports. Visual Security also provides

a specialised service for medical staff caring

for indigenous mental health patients in

remote areas.

Visual Security has an impressive long-term

client portfolio, including BHP, South 32,

Hutchinson Builders, Territory Civil and the

NT Government, built from a reputation of

trust and reliability. The team has a fleet of

4WDs equipped to access the most remote

areas of the Top End and can also utilise

light aircraft or the 7-metre company boat.

“Flying over Kakadu is an amazing

experience and people pay a lot of money

to do it, so I’m blessed to be able to do it

for work. We also work in some awesome

fishing spots, so there are definite fringe

benefits!”

Jim credits his team for the success of the

business over 16 years of operation.

“Providing good jobs for good people is my

motivation and making sure my team go

home safe to their families is our priority,”

he said. “We’re working hard to secure

government contracts, competing against

the big boys. This can be difficult on a

dollar-for-dollar basis but our reputation

works very well for us.”

“We have a strong focus on spending local

with our uniforms and other suppliers.

It’s easy to get down during these tough

economic times but we all need to think

about tomorrow and get the Territory back

on its feet with smart business and keeping

money local where we can.”

Visual Security can respond to any security

request anywhere within the NT within

24 hours. While Jim manages a team of

over 40 staff, he can still put on a shirt and

respond to a call at a moment’s notice.

Being on call 24/7, Jim enjoys down-time

when he can, including fishing, training,

gardening and spending time with his

partner Karen at their home in Noonamah.

A strong core is the base for most

movements performed in the

gym. The Deadlift and Back Squat

are just two movements that rely

heavily on having a strong core to

keep you in a good, active position

throughout the lift. By us building

a strong and stable midsection we

can give ourselves better balance,

better posture and even help

reduce back pain in some cases.

Not all core exercises are directly

targeted toward the “abs”, we also

want to target the lower back,

obliques and internal core muscles.

located in Berrimah and is fully equipped

team of tradesman we are dedicated to

providing quality service and finished

product to the client.

It’s common knowledge

that exercise is good for

your physical health, but

what are the effects of

exercise on mental health?

During and after exercise

the body releases a range of

chemicals, two of these are

serotonin and endorphins.

These chemicals are often

termed ‘the happy’ or ‘feel

good’ chemicals. Regular

exercise is known to boost

the production of these

hormones and has been

found to help alleviate

symptoms associated

with mild-to-moderate

depression, reduce

symptoms of anxiety,

reduce stress and result in

improved moods. Exercise

has also been found to have

a positive effect on selfconcept

and confidence, and

this is not just based on the

‘look good, feel good’ theory.

Exercise that provides

opportunities to learn new

skills and achieve challenging

goals can lead to improved

self concept and confidence.

Working out in a group

environment or joining a

local gym or sports club can

also lead to improved social

skills, and reduce feelings

of loneliness and isolation.

Finally, exercise has also been

shown to improve sleeping

patterns and sleep quality. A

nights worth of good rest will

increase energy levels and

productivity the following

day. No matter your age or

fitness level, you can use

exercise as a powerful tool to

start feeling.

be huge barriers not to mention feeling

insecure with our post baby body and being

away from baby. But there are plenty of

benefits to getting back to the gym. Not

only does exercise help us lose some of those

pregnancy kilos, but more importantly it is

great for our mental health. Spending time

with other like minded adults can be really

important when we spend all our time with

a new baby. That one hour away to devote

to ourselves and our physical and mental

wellbeing is invaluable as a parent. There will

always be plenty of excuses not to do it but

it’s important to start. If you used to train 6

days a week, start with 3 and build up from

there. Remember that your body will need

time to get back to where it was, start slowly,

scale your workouts back, and just keep

showing up, even if somedays you can’t give

100%. It took your body 9 months to create

another human, give it the same amount of

time to return to it’s formal glory!

Getting back to the gym or any exercise

routine after having a baby can be difficult.

Being tired and trying to find time in a busy

schedule can be challenging. These days

we are more aware that the mental health

benefits of exercise are just as, if not more,

important than the physical ones. Taking

just one hour a day, a few times a week to

exercise, will make us better parents, and with

most gyms offering child minding there are

no excuses. As soon as you get the all clear

from your doctor to resume normal physical

exercise get started! It might be just getting

out for a 30min walk everyday for a week, and

then back to the gym. I remember my first

workout post baby. We did some running

and I remember feeling things giggle from

places that never giggled before. I was the

last one to finish the workout and I was a

little embarrassed. But as I lay on the floor

recovering I never felt better. Start slow, scale

your workouts back, and just keep showing

up. It took your body 9 months to create

another human, give it the same amount of

time to return to it’s formal glory!

Through the delivery of high

quality early learning and school

education programs, Northern

Territory government schools are

giving children and students the

opportunity to reach their full

potential.

Vicki Baylis, Chief Executive of the NT

Department of Education speaks of

the shared commitment of schools

and education system to give every

student the opportunity to engage,

grow and achieve.

“Our goal is to be the most

improving education system in

Australia,” Ms Baylis says.

“Over the past year, we have been

working hard to understand what it

is that makes the biggest difference

to student outcomes and how

we use that to better support our

students and schools.

“We have a shared focus on ensuring

that children are engaged in their

education, that they are learning in

school and that, as they progress

through school, they achieve the

best possible outcomes.

“Already we have seen incredible

growth and learning across the

Northern Territory in our schools

as they go on their school

improvement journey.”

With a continued investment in

quality programs and initiatives

that make a difference, students

attending Northern Territory

environments enriched with culture

and opportunity.

The focus on education in the

Northern Territory starts in the first

to creating a love of lifelong learning.

The Families as First Teachers

program which provides support to

young children and their families has

been expanded to 43 sites across the

Northern Territory.

A range of pathways are offered

to students in Territory schools;

including extensive Vocational

ESTABLISHED IN 1981,

THE AQUASCENE FISH

FEEDING SANCTUARY

AT DOCTORS GULLY HAS

BEGINNINGS EMBEDDED

IN DARWIN’S RICH

HISTORY AFTER WORLD

WAR II.

AQUASCENE

FISH

FEEDING

Legendary salvage engineer

and deep-sea diver Carl

Atkinson obtained a “lease

in perpetuity” for the area in

1945 and began, as a hobby,

feeding the hundreds of fish

visiting the shore at high

tide in 1958. Carl successfully

applied for the area to be

declared a marine reserve in

1964. He created what has

become a unique institution

in the Top End by singlehandedly

constructing a rock

groyne to protect the friendly

wild fish.

Owned and operated by

Darwin’s fifth generation

Fong family since 2003,

the sanctuary has become

a popular family-friendly

tourist destination, achieved

eco-tourism certification and

welcomes over 60,000 annual

visitors of all ages – both local

and from around the world

- who can experience handfeeding

up to 20 different

species of tropical wild fish.

Visitors can hand feed from

the stairs or the viewing arena

or wade right into the action

and feel the fish tickling their

feet as they swarm in search

of a gratuitous snack of bread

Due to the enormous tidal

movements of Darwin’s

harbour, many hundreds

of fish only visit Aquascene

for a few hours a day and

numbers may vary but you

are guaranteed to always see

fish! Numbers are generally

highest between December

and August on deeper tides.

Visitors can expect to see

milkfish, mullet, catfish,

bream, Tiera batfish and the

famous Territory barramundi

and may also get a glimpse of

rock cod, mangrove jack, rays,

parrot fish, diamond fish and

mud crabs. Have your camera

ready!

AquaScene would like to

acknowledge the Aboriginal

and Torres Strait Islander

peoples as Australia’s First

custodians; particularly

Darwin’s Larrakia Nation

descendants. We value their

culture and continuing

connection to country,

We pay our respects to

Mataranka is a small pastoral

town in the top end region

of Australia’s Northern

Territory. Mataranka

is famous for its sand

bottomed warm springs

with lush palms, crystal

clear warm waters and is the

location of the Australian

classic novel We of the

Never-Never.

Mataranka is located on the Stuart Highway 1080 km

North of Alice Springs, about 420 km southeast of the

territorial capital, Darwin, and 107 km south-east of

Katherine. In the language of the local Yangman, the

word “Mataranka” means “home of the snake”.

Mataranka is a place where you can swim in hot

springs all the year round; these springs are around

30°C and pump out 30.5 megalitres of water each day.

This area used to be the home of Jeanie Gunn; who

wrote the famous book about Elsey Stations titled “We

of the Never Never’ which is now a part of Australia’s

folklore. It is believed that once you visit Mataranka

you’ll Never Never leave!

Today, Mataranka is now a modern community of

400 people and since it is one of the famous tourist

spots it provides all the services a visitor expects. You

can have the facilities like accommodation, , Inns,

resorts, cafes, restaurants, and general stores.

THINGS TO DO & SEE

• The Stock Yard Gallery: The Stockyard Gallery - a

cafe and gallery in the small town of Mataranka,

beautifully showcases the local art and artifacts,

paintings, sculptures, and Aboriginal artifacts

as well as books about the Northern Territory.

Another attraction in the Yard gallery is the fourmeter

statue of the postman Henry Peckham, who

is one of the characters from the book, ”We of the

Never Never”.

• Mataranka War Memorial: The memorial consisting

of a granite boulder set on a square plinth is a

heritage location in Mataranka, which was made

in the memory of fallen and returned servicemen

and women of Mataranka within the roper river

district who were involved in some past Australia’s

conflicts

• Barra Feeding: Come and join the “Feed the Barra

Show” in Mataranka to experience one of Australia’s

best fish species, the Barramundi being Hand fed.

• Tindall Limestone and the Hot Springs.

• Bitter Springs

• Rainbow Spring: Enjoy a swim in the beautiful

Rainbow Springs Thermal Pool.

• Elsey National Park and Bitter Springs

• Botanical Walk and Aboriginal Army Cam

National Park

Driving an hour-and-a-half from

Darwin displays countless of diverse

environments that showcase its rugged

sandstone cliffs, breath-taking streams

and monsoon rainforest, magnetic

termite hills, waterfalls and notable ruins.

The 1,500 square-kilometre park is mostly

vital to the Koongurrukin, Marranuggu

and Aboriginal community. The Finniss

exploration was the first ever connection

of Europe to the area and the park that

was named after the prestige Frederick

Henry Litchfield, a member of the

expedition.

To have the best appreciation of it’s true

full beauty, its best to stay for at least

two days to plunge into its crystalclear

swimming holes and pleasant

bushwalking to relax you. Don’t worry

about the refreshments, they are readily

available in the park at Wangi Falls while

you can choose your accommodation

depending on your feels.

Taking place all year round, come rain or shine, the Nightcliff Markets offer a fully accessible familyfriendly

experience and is always a great day out for locals and tourists alike since being established

in 1995 by the Nightcliff Traders Association.

Conveniently located in the original Nightcliff Village, only five minutes from the foreshore precinct,

the markets are open every Sunday between 8am and 2pm and feature over a hundred stalls with

goods ranging from unique handcrafted products, jewellery, artistic wares, natural remedies, preloved

items and bric-a-brac, and of course, plenty of great food and beverage options. Whether

it’s a tropical smoothie, a sweet crepe, a spicy laksa or a barista-brewed coffee, you’re sure to find

something delicious among the range of friendly vendors. Have your tarot cards read, enjoy a

massage, try reflexology or simply do your fresh fruit and vegetable shopping for the week while

supporting local traders. Prices are affordable and you can even pick up fresh flowers or potted

plants.

The community feel is enriched by free entertainment and live music performances, with the

Market providing a space for locals to connect socially and discover creative talent, be it buskers,

artists or producers. There is also a playground providing entertainment for the kids to enjoy (and

respite for the parents!) and plenty of seating under shade to relax and enjoy your purchases.

The Nightcliff Markets have thrived since their inception and continue to offer a relaxed vibe and a

friendly and welcoming atmosphere that embodies Darwin’s well-known brand of hospitality. The

Nightcliff Markets are an excellent choice for a casual Sunday stroll among the stalls to pick up a

bargain, grab some great food or simply hang out with family and friends.

known communally as the Tiwi Islands. During 1795, Europeans started their

contacts with Tiwi people and 199 years after, the British established a

settlement which was the first in North Australia.

A guided tour in the island is best experience in life with the modern-day

Aboriginal community to learn more about their history and culture.

Tiwi people are known for their distinguishing fabric prints, impressive

pottery, sculpture and carving designs. You may also do a quick detour to

their notable galleries on both Melville and Bathrust Islands. Alongside, you

can also purchase items from the artists themselves.

Like most of the Australians, Tiwi people also love sports, particularly with the

Australian Rules football. If you want to watch the Tiwi Football Grand Final

and indulge with their Art Sale, it runs from March and that is the only time

you can visit the island without a permit!

With your overall experience and the island being isolated, you are very

fortunate to see and find species that are not recorded elsewhere in the

world. It is also famous for being the largest host of breeding colony of

Crested Terns and a huge population of olive ridley turtle.

SEALINK CRUISE

TO CRAB CLAW

A unique opportunity to visit

Crab Claw Island on a day trip

Your two-hour cruise will take you past the remote North

Australian Coast, out of Darwin Harbour past Charles

Point and around into Bynoe Harbour with commentary

along the way. On arriving on the beach at Crab Claw

Island Resort, enjoy your sumptuous seafood Buffet lunch

in the restaurant and enjoy a cool drink on the spacious

deck overlooking pristine Bynoe Harbour, have a swim,

take a walk, meet the wild life, wet a line off the beach,

Relax for a couple of hours then cruise back to Darwin.

Nestled on the water’s edge, Crab Claw Island Resort is a

relaxing escape from the everyday. The complex has elevated

cabins connected by walkways through the trees and palm

gardens, refreshing swimming pools, an elevated open

restaurant with views across the harbour, boat ramp, wildlife

and natural beauty galore.

Crab Claw Island’s ‘Breezes’ restaurant is open for breakfast,

lunch and dinner, serving a wide selection of tasty, al a carte

meals. The fully licensed bar holds a selection of wines, icy cold

beers and soft drinks that will quench the thirst and cleanse the

pallet of any weary traveller.

Lovely ‘outback NT’ experience. Crab Claw is one of those

places to just relax and dwindle away time, either fishing or

relaxing by the pool. We stayed here for 6 nights, but could

have easy stayed longer. The staff are so relaxed and friendly,

nothing is a bother.

Crab Claw Island is the perfect place for family getaway…

the beaches are pristine, white quartz sand – perfect for

sandcastles, the harbour is calm and full of fish – making first

time fishing experiences full of all the right kinds of memories,

the swimming pools are fenced with child proof gates and

both pools have safe access, the restaurant has a special kids

menu with health options as well as the ‘traditional’ holiday

fare, high-chairs and knives and forks just the right size for little

hands.

We have two accommodation options to suit families who

need a bit more space. Our Family Cabins are set on the rear

of the main walkway, approximately 15m from the beach.

They are twice the size of our standard cabins and fitted with

a double and four single beds, a dining table and chairs, large

refrigerator, and en-suite bathroom facilities. Alternatively

‘The house’ is at ground level with absolute beach frontage.

It has two bedrooms, each with a double and two single beds;

a large balcony with a gate, dining table and chairs and BBQ.

Are you a hiker? This is one that you

can try, it is called the Barrk-Marlam

walk that takes you six hours return

depending on your pace. First part of

the walk is a bit challenging as this is

a steep climb up to the side of the hill

but most of it was an easy stroll thru the

bushland along the top of the slope.

This place is surely one good place for

hiking, relaxing and camping all rolled

into one.

Twin Falls Gorge is one of Kakadu’s

big waterfalls. It has a 150-metre

high cliff into a deep pool. During

the dry season, you can walk

through to the base as it has a

very slow flow of water.

It has an aquatic life in the clear

waters that deserves a special

mention in this blog. As soon as

you dock, a good walking exercise

along the floating boardwalk

showcase the best scenery that

the falls could offer.

At the base of the gorge, you can

go on picnic and soak yourself in

the best aura on the white beach.

You may also explore more of Twin

is by road, boat shuttle service and

a walking over huge stones, sand
