It doesn’t seem any me at all that we were wishing you all a happy holiday and now 

we are back to school already. We wish all our youngsters a wonderful new term whether you are 

starng a new school or just moving up a year. The new season at the rugby club and other clubs kicks 

off this month. 

There is an undercurrent of preparaon starng with Gillingham Singers (page 24) looking for new 

voices to join them in readiness for their Christmas performances. New local Adult Educaon groups 

coming to North Dorset (page 14). If you are feeling creave Scribblers Wring Group meet monthly 

in Milton and local author Della Galton runs a weekly wring class (page 29). Read local teacher

Gillingham’s Green spaces are recognised as some of the best in the world 

The open spaces in Gillingham were among a record-breaking 1,970 UK parks and green spaces 

and 131 in thirteen other countries around the world, that have recently received a prestigious 

Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space – for the third year running. 

This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the 

highest possible environmental standards and is beautifully maintained. 

The open spaces off Colesbrook Lane known as Shires Gate linked via Frog Hollow to Shreen 

Meadow received a Green Flag Award for the first time this year with much thanks and

Shaftesbury Town Council declares a Climate Emergency and 

supports the town becoming a Plastic Free community 

It is widely accepted that Co2 levels are unsustainable and causing widespread damage locally and 

globally. In addition the UK is estimated to generate around 5 million tonnes of plastic waste every year 

of which around 70% is single use plastic. The Town Council recognises its own actions should 

minimise this impact and work with the community to create a positive change. 

Plastic Free Communities is an initiative by the charity Surfers Against Sewage to encourage local 

communities across the UK to reduce the prevalence of single use plastics across the country. If the 

town were to be awarded Plastic Free Community status, it would not only demonstrate our 

commitment to environmentally sound policies but would be a valuable addition to the marketing of the 

town as a location to visit or live in for the growing number of people sensitive to environmental needs. 

These two proposals were put forward to a meeting of the Council on 23 rd July and a working group is 

being created to draw up a plan for action by the end of October 2019. 

Councillor Chase, the proposer of both motions said “This is a great start, but while any council can 

make statements, we now need to take action. As such we would welcome input, particularly from 

those with expertise in either plastic alternatives or other forms of environmentally friendly activities 

to help us turn these words into actions”. The Mayor of Shaftesbury, 

who supported both motions, added “Dorset Council declared Climate 

emergency at its first meeting in May and is now working on producing 

its plan. I believe our community needs make our contribution to preserve 

the planet for future generations”.

The Birthday Present by Rik Lonsdale 

‘You shouldn’t have, I told you not to get me anything.’ 

We were in a restaurant having a celebratory meal. 

‘It’s a birthday present, you’re supposed to say thank you and tell me how thoughtful I 

am,’ she said. 

Margaret was clearly upset. I had definitely said the wrong thing, and she was right, it 

had been crass of me. She had taken time to go and find me a present, wrap it up and wait 

until my birthday to give it to me. The least I could do would be to have the grace to accept 

it. 

‘I’m sorry, you’re right, I’m being an oaf, thank you, darling, you are very kind. And 

thoughtful.’ I took the parcel from her. By the size and weight, it was clearly a book, a 

hardback of generous proportions. I have always loved reading. I’m one of those people 

who believe you can never have enough books. 

I’m old enough to savour moments like this and don’t rush to tear the paper open. First, I 

inspect the parcel. It has been expertly wrapped, Sellotape binding each perfectly formed 

envelope end, and sealing the centre join. The challenge between us, whenever gifts are 

exchanged, is to open the packet without damaging the paper. Initially this was so 

expensive wrapping could be reused, a necessary expedient during our young family days 

when cash was hard to come by. Now it was a ritual of delayed gratification, the aim to 

remove all the Sellotape without disclosing the contents of the package. It took me ten 

minutes, but there it sat, intact and still completely covered in wrapping but without a trace 

of Sellotape. 

During this we talked. I told her again, how much I enjoyed reading and that books were 

always a welcome gift. 

‘Any kind of book?’ she said. 

‘Yes, any kind. I’m always interested in reading styles I’ve never read before.’ 

‘Well I’m certain you’ve never read a book like this before.’ 

‘Certain is a big word, how can you be so sure?’ 

‘Well, you’ve never read one like this while I’ve known you. In fact, I don’t think you’ve 

ever opened a book like this. Yet there are thousands out there. They are hugely popular 

and sell in millions.’ 

My curiosity was piqued and I almost scrabbled the parcel open to see what great 

literary genre I had been missing out on, but paused to again express my effusive thanks. 

‘Darling, you are the most kind and thoughtful of women. It has been a great honour and 

pleasure to have shared these last thirty-five years with you.’ I gave her my most generous 

and intimate smile and picked up the book, still 

encased in its sky blue wrapping. 

Slowly I unfolded the paper to reveal the mystery 

inside. She was right. I had never read anything like 

“Cooking – For Men Who Won’t”. I looked at her 

determined expression and immediately resolved to 

absorb and utilise the entire contents of this gift.
