Conference looks at new
five-year strategy for EC
ROB KNOWLES
The Eastern Cape
department of
c o - o p e r at i v e
governance & t raditional
affairs held a three-day
conference at the Royal St
Andrews Hotel this week
to establish a strategy for
the province in line with
government’s objectives
and in accordance with
SA’s constitution.
Cogta Eastern Cape
invited major
stakeholders to the
conference, including
municipalities, metros,
business leaders, the
offices of the premier and
president, of which the
main purpose was to
establish a strategy plan
for the five years, starting
in 2020 until 2025.
“This is the first
conference of its kind,”
Cogta EC spokesperson
Mamnkeli Ngam said.
“We need to examine
the highlights and the
problems of the previous,
fifth administration and
build on the successes
and learn from the
negatives, using them as
an opportunity to improve
all aspects of the lives of
our people,” Ngam said.
“We need to turn
challenges into
oppor tunities.”
Ngam went on to say
that investment was
‘‘
We
needed in order to
develop the province and
that required
sustainability and
stability to encourage
i n v e st o r s .
Ngam spoke of rural
development and
agrarian reform MEC
Xolile Nqatha, who was
appointed in May when
Eastern Cape premier
Phumulo Masualle took
office and shook up his
cabinet.
“The MEC said we need
to heal the past and put
an end to inequality,
unemployment and
encourage development,”
said Ngam, who went on
to say that Nqatha would
support development on
the political front and
called on everyone to be
guided by the
c o n st i t u t i o n .
“As we deliberate over
the three days, we should
also not despair as if we
do not have any good
stories to tell in many
need to examine
the highlights and the
problems of the
p re v i o u s
administration and
build on the
successes
areas of service delivery.
“We have made
remarkable progress
which includes the
establishment of the local
houses of t raditional
leaders, the election of
new members of the
Eastern Cape House of
Traditional Leaders, the
coronation of King
Mangaliso Ndamase of
AmaMpondo
aseNyandeni Great
Place,” Nqatha said in his
opening address.
“The sixth-term
administration is a period
of renewal and rebuilding
state institutions to
respond to the current
challenges facing our
country, namely poverty,
unemployment and
inequalit y.
“In this context, the
National Development
Plan (NDP) warns us
about the growing
scourge in the SA societ y
of the open displays of
opulence,” he said.
Community
receives award
for hard work
NTOMBENTSHA MSUTU
Asiza Shode, a 28-year-old dance coach from
Nemato, was recently awarded for his hard work
and dedication to his community at the Eastern
Cape Sports and Recreation Awards which were
held in East London last weekend.
The ecstatic Asiza said he was called about
two months ago to be told he had been
nominated, and then two weeks ago he got an
e-mail with an invitation to attend the actual
event at East London International Convention
Cent re.
He has been working as a facilitator and
dance coach at Enkuthazweni special needs
school and skills centre since 2017.
He said being a community developer is one
the most fulfilling jobs for him and he has the
passion for it.
He won an award in the category of
excellence in sport.
“I am really proud of myself, receiving this
award for me was such an honour,” Shode said.
“I love teaching dance and I do it with
passion. This is something I will never forget,
being handed an award by the MEC himself,
Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane. This will also give
me power to strive for excellence,” Shode said.
The dancers Shode coaches go from province
to province dancing in different competitions.
Some of them recently took part in the Arnold
Schwarzenegger Classic competition that was
held in Johannesburg and came back with
trophies in different categories.
“I want to carry on doing great work for my
community, I enjoy working with people, it is
one of the reasons I wake up every day to go
and fulfil my dreams and by helping others.
Thank you to everyone who supports me, and to
my students am forever grateful for your
presence,” said Shode.
Truck drivers still
making illegal stops
JON HOUZET
Contrary to Sanral’s intentions that new
kerbing and paved sidewalks along the R72
through Port Alfred would discourage truck
drivers from illegally using the shoulder, truck
drivers are simply parking on the sidewalk.
Responding to Talk of the Town’s queries last
week about a paved sidewalk being cut into
Albany Road in the industrial area, regional
manager for Sanral Southern Region, Mbulelo
Peterson, said among the reasons for narrowing
Albany Road at that point was because “there is
the likelihood of the passing trucks to use the
additional width as a place to stop and pick up
passengers. We are trying to discourage this
behaviour within the town limits.
“The introduction of sidewalks is not negotiable
and is a safety feature. Kerbs and sidewalks
prevent illegal use of the shoulder, as well as
safety for pedestrians.”
We pointed out to Peterson that the intention to
discourage trucks from stopping illegally and
picking up passengers was not working, as truck
drivers stop at will in both an east and west
direction on Southwell Road outside the Caltex
Garage and Fresh Stop (at Van Riebeeck), taking
up one lane and being a hazard to vehicles
approaching from behind.
Trucks also stop at any point on the section of
the R72 between Main Street and the Wesley Hill
intersection to pick up or drop off passengers.
In response Sanral said: “Sanral cannot
comment on law enforcement which is the
responsibility of the Road Traffic Inspectorate and
SAPS. While we deplore all acts of criminality and
acts that endanger road users, it must be stressed
that Sanral has no law enforcement mandate or
capabilit y.”
TotT followed up with photos taken of a truck
which had illegally parked in Southwell Road and
partially on the new paved sidewalk across the
road from the Caltex Garage last Wednesday
evening, while the driver went shopping at Fresh
Stop and Steers. We copied in Ndlambe
Municipalit y’s community protection services
directorate, which oversees the traffic department.
Neither Sanral nor the municipality have
responded.
Crowd on R67
after cow
killed by car
JON HOUZET
A Port Alfred resident
was alarmed by the
scene of an accident
on the R67 recently,
when a crowd
gathered around a
cow that had been
knocked over by a
c a r.
The resident, who
wanted to remain
anonymous, provided
TotT with photos
taken from her
cellphone, and said
the accident had
taken place on the
evening of Monday
August 19, near the
Nemato stadium.
She said it
appeared people
were waiting for the
cow to die with the
intention to slaughter
it, and children were
prodding the beast
as it lay on its side.
“They were also
going into the street
and it was
dangerous,” she said.
Several cars had
also stopped along
the R67.
TotT asked police
s p o ke s p e r s o n
Captain Mali
Govender for
comment.
She said: “An
accident report was
completed by SAPS
on scene.
“The driver of a
taxi was slightly
injured. According to
the [SAPS] member
who attended the
scene, the cow was
removed by a
representative of the
cattle owners
association awaiting
i d e n t i f i c at i o n .
“SAPS left the
scene after the road
was cleared.”

Nemato designer
takes her business
to new heights
Passion for fashion
sees container
shop open doors
NTOMBENTSHA MSUTU
Nemato clothing designer Zikhona Maki
has taken her business to new heights
since deciding to open a container shop,
B&S Clothing, from where she can operate on
a full-time basis.
Zikkie’s Collection is a small clothing shop in
Nemato run by 37-year-old entrepreneur Maki,
also known as “Zikkie”.
Maki has a huge passion for fashion which is
evident in her designing and selling traditional
African clothing.
She also designs personalised clothing and
sells other fashion accessories, such as
jewellery and bags.
Zikkie’s Collection started in February 2019,
but Maki has already been designing clothing
for more than 20 years.
She started with designing and selling
clothes from home until she got the
opportunity to start her own business in
N e m at o .
“Growing up, I always loved looking different.
I would buy a normal jersey in town, and when
I get home, I would cut it and change it to look
d i f fe r e n t .
“To me, that is I what I lived for,” Maki said.
“I have always loved clothes and fashion, so I
never hesitated to go study fashion design at
Border Technikon, which is now known as
Walter Sisulu University.
“For me, getting new fabrics and creating a
new dress is exciting.
“It’s like breathing fresh air – that is how
much I love what I do.”
Maki was also recently approached by a
group of students from Stenden SA who
selected Zikkie’s Collection as part of their
project to help an entrepreneur in the
township.
They have offered to assist with the business
side of her shop and marketing.
One of the students involved in the
entrepreneurship project, Haye Wierda, said
they had selected Maki because they saw how
hardworking she is and how much she loves
what she’s doing.
“We are three students from NHL Stenden [in
the Netherlands] that follow a minor study,
called social entrepreneurship.
“With our project we want to help Zikkie to
improve her business and make it more
profitable. We also want to help her with the
marketing of her business,” Wierda said.
Tourism AGM shows things are
looking up for Sunshine Coast
Sunny skies
ahead as SCT
increases its
footprint
ROB KNOWLES
Last Thursday evening’s
Sunshine Coast Tourism
AGM highlighted a number
of important facts that indicate a
positive future for tourism in the
area.
The AGM took place at the
Royal St Andrews Hotel and was
attended by businesspeople,
community members and
Ndlambe mayor Khululwa
Ncamiso.
According to Sunshine Coast
Tourism (SCT) chair Dr Rick
Pr yce, one of the focus areas for
tourism over the last year was to
increase the footprint of the
Sunshine Coast to encourage
more visitors to the area.
This has been largely
successful with the Sunshine
Coast being included in the
Indi-Atlantic tourism route, plus
more signboards, especially at
Nanaga (where the current guide
board will be upgraded) and at
East London.
“There will be a signpost
indicating the Sunshine Coast
from Jeffreys Bay to East
London,” Pryce said.
SCT manager Sandy Birch
expanded on Pryce’s comments
by adding that the signpost at
Nanaga was approved by
Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism
Agency (ECPTA), but that SCT
needs to pay for the 3m x 5m
s i g n p o st .
She said the board would be in
place by the end of September.
Birch also spoke of other
events and initiatives SCT has
undertaken over the year.
She said SCT participated in
two trade shows – the annual
indaba for businesses held in
Johannesburg each year, as well
as the Getaway conference.
“At the indaba, visitors set up
STREETS AHEAD: Sunshine Coast Tourism presented the Tourism trophy in recognition of outstanding service to tourism to Wharf Street traders for their Wharf Street
Soiree initiative at the Sunshine Coast Tourism AGM. Presenting the award was SCT manager Sandy Birch, right, and accepting it on behalf of the traders, was Louise
appointments to see the various
representatives of the products
on offer,” explained Birch.
“This year there were so many
people asking about the
Sunshine Coast, I was unable to
see everyone on my booking list.
“At the Getaway conference,
everyone seemed to hold
Kenton-on-Sea in high regard.”
The last comment drew a
cheer from those representing
Kenton in the audience.
“We have also constructed a
tourism kiosk in Bathurst.
“We did not have funds to
open our own office, but the
booth, which is situated on the
Village Green, will be open seven
days a week from 8am to 7pm.”
Birch explained that SCT was
the intermediary and liaison
between the organiser of an
event and SAPS and Ndlambe
Municipality. She said that
various licences and insurances
were required to host events and
that SCT would organise these
on behalf of the organiser.
Birch said the 2020
bicentennial celebrations would
be coordinated by SCT.
She also listed a few of the
events for 2020 which included
the Royal St Andrews Amanzi
Challenge, the boat races (which
she confirmed will take place in
Port Alfred once more), the
Bathurst Agricultural Show, the
Kenton Rhino Run and Pineapple
C r i c ke t .
“These are just some of the
events that take place over the
y e a r, ” Birch said.
She also mentioned
investment in the area was
gaining momentum and that
more young people, under 25
years of age, were entering the
property market.
Birch also mentioned there
were initially 12 interns (now six)
who were learning techniques as
tour guides at the SCT offices.
Two of the interns who began
their training, have already found
employment.
Warren Lange also spoke of
the Port Alfred beautification
project and how he was to be
planting trees and plants at both
entrances to the town.
“However, we are looking for
donors to donate trees to the
project,” Lange said.
COUNCIL NOTES ... the municipality’s voice
New mayor Ncamiso promises transparency
ROB KNOWLES
General
The latest full council
meeting was held at the
council chambers last
Friday, where newlyelected
mayor, Khululwa
Ncamiso, promised that
her administration would
keep residents informed of
all council decisions and
how these would affect the
people of the area.
As Speaker Vivian
Maphaphu was unavailable
to attend the meeting, the
council elected councillor
and ANC chief whip Andile
Marasi to sit in as speaker.
Throughout the meeting,
people deferred to the
speaker but kept referring
to Marasi as “Madam
S p e a ke r ”, which caused a
few giggles in council.
In her opening address,
Ncamiso celebrated
Wo m e n ’s month but also
warned that there was still
a long way to go before
equality of the sexes was
achieved.
“The fight is not yet
o v e r, ” she said to council.
Ncamiso spoke of the
prevalence of violence
against women and
children, the high rate of
poverty within the
municipal area and the
problems associated with
unemployment.
She went on to speak
about the Ndlambe Youth
Council that had recently
been established.
Transp arency
“We need to go back to
the people to explain, in
simple terms, what can be
done now that the budget
has been approved,”
Ncamiso said.
“We need to show the
people how every cent will
be spent, and we need to
have an Annual Report
Roadshow so we
communicate directly with
the people.”
Transferring land
It was also revealed at the
meeting that the
Department of Public
Works was in the process
of transferring the
properties that it owns
over to the municipality.
This has been a bone of
contention for some time
as plans to erect new
structures or renovate
dilapidated buildings has
often been hampered by
the question of ownership.
The land around the
former Lounge building on
the corner of Pascoe
Crescent is just one of the
points of contention.
Canadian BIGM project
Ncamiso spoke of the joint
Ndlambe/Ottawa BIGM
project and said that the
Canadians were upset at
the lack of reporting on the
Ndlambe side.
She said that corporate
services director Lazola
Maneli would be
commissioned to look into
the matter.
Kap River
Finally, Ncamiso said the
Kap River resort was in the
process of being
transferred from the Sarah
Baartman District to
Ndlambe.
“This will help us to
better manage the area
and create employment,”
she said.
Commonages
It was stated at the
meeting that the rates for
keeping cattle on the
commonages would be
reduced, in order to assist
residents to keep their
cattle there.
However, councillor Ray
Schenk pointed out that
the municipality was only
responsible for supplying
water and fences at the
commonages.
“We are not responsible
for providing dipping
facilities on the
commonages,” he told
council.
Water issues
The entire municipal area
of Ndlambe is still under
strict water restrictions,
and councillors lamented
the lack of work being
done to fix the situation,
with Amatola Water again
in the spotlight.
Councillor Stwiga
Njibana stated that wat e r
coming out of the taps
smelt bad. “Water is a big
problem,” Njibana said.
“The ponds themselves
smell.”
Councillor Thembani
Mazana said people
seemed to be unaware that
there were still water
restrictions in place.
“I feel we may need to
declare Ndlambe a drought
disaster area,” he
suggested to council.
Schenk supported
Mazana and said a further
reminder of the water
restrictions should be
issued by the municipality.
Scholar transport
Parents of pupils who had
attended Port Alfred
Primêre Skool but had to
leave after they had
completed Grade 8, asked
the municipality for
assistance to transport
their children to an
Afrikaans language school
in Makhanda
( G r a h a m st o w n ) .
Some pupils from Port
Alfred and Alexandria were
not transported by the
department of education.
Also, because of the
academic periods involved,
along with the budgets of
both the department of
education and the
department of transport,
some pupils had been
excluded from the
arrangement.
Ultimately, the council
approved an excess
payment for scholar
transport of R186,153.
However, Schenk said
the DA could not support
the approval of the funds
as this would be
considered by the Auditor
General as irregular
expenditure.

Readers discuss government’s progress
NTOMBENTSHA MSUTU
For our latest Facebook question, we asked our
readers what they think the government needs to
focus on, 25 years into democracy.
Greg Olsen said a change in government was
needed.
Leaza Tobias said: “Learning that the country is
not there to line their personal pocket, but they
are there for the benefit of the country.”
Loraine Briggs Campbell Loader said: “Probably
to first look at what has been achieved! Then
compare that with how quickly countries rebuilt
after World War 2 – didn’t take 25 years for sure.”
Gerald and Wanda Loxton said: “Ignore the
unions and stop worrying about job losses,
particularly at Eskom which needs a huge
cleanout of unqualified employees.”
Larry Pip Freeman said: “They should start to
keep the country on track and not only the gravy
t rain.”
Mitchum Haupt said the list is too long.
Karen Ramsay Tannahill said: “Getting the NPA
to take actual action against someone . . anyone.”
Nick Louw said: “Focus on getting rid of
communism – it needs to die.
“Focus on capitalism. Stop killing the farmers
who feed us and give China back their money for
the land they promised! Stop idolising dead
terrorists and ancestral forefathers.
“Bring controlled corporal punishment back in
school and most of all bring God back into
schools.
“In ’94 they handed over a country that was
running with the best in the world.
“Personally, I say this country is dead, so break
it up into states, giving each their share like they
were supposed to in the beginning and let them
govern themselves.”
Doreen Burke said: “Everything, but first of all the
stealing of taxpayers’ m o n e y. ”
Angi Bezuidenhout said: “The government needs
to give up, so real democracy can prevail.”
Karen Frances Long said: “Lift discrimination!
BEE must go so everyone is equal and the
economy will improve.”
Colleen Denniss said: “Firstly, this government
needs to stop worrying about the past.
“Colonialism cannot and has never ruined a
country. It is time to stop the blaming.
“We are 25 years into a new era and still blame
the old ways ... it’s time to look to the future.
“Secondly it’s time to stop crime, corruption and
murder, bring back stringent jail sentences and
give the people of this country a judiciary that
works properly and deals with criminals.
“And thirdly ... give us a government that is
willing to work to better this country and not there
to only fill their pockets and think of themselves.”
Caryn Bruyns said: “Stop paying people to have
babies. And tell the youth that nothing comes for
free.
“How come everything is free for the youth who
never experienced apartheid yet their elders who
did have to come out on pathetic pensions?”
Jo Styles Worthington-Smith said: “Sort out
corruption. Get municipalities functioning properly
with competent staff.
“Build the economy focussing on clean energy
and regenerative agriculture to create jobs.”
Mark Styles said that people should stop being
self-entitled, and people should work for what
they want.
Kim van Lingen said: “Everything, considering
they haven’t focused on anything other than
self-enrichment since 1994.”
Joc Guest said: “A non-partisan system to
educate the electorate on democracy and how
selling your vote exposes all to corruption and a
high rate of poverty, that voting on emotions
instead of logic based on party performance is
threatening their future and everyone has a civic
duty to vote.”
Eric Ero Marcus said: “Someone posted
something about one must stop looking for
handouts and work hard for what one needs.
“I just wanna fill you in that not all of us got
well-paying jobs like you.
“We are in need of a house and you don’t take a
matter of not having a decent place to stay
seriously, as if we’ve put ourselves in this
situation deliberately.
“Everyone has a right to an RDP house.”
OPINION
Pe r e n n i a l
problem
with
trucks
The problems that arise with trucks that
pass through Port Alfred, are perennial.
Residents have often complained over
the years about the speed at which trucks
pass through town, and we have reported
on the many accidents that take place on
Southwell Road hill and Albany Road hill,
where trucks have jack-knifed, toppled,
lost their loads or simply stalled on the
hill, creating a hazard for other motorists
and sometimes requiring traffic to be
diver ted.
That there have not been more injuries
or fatalities is a miracle.
We have also reported on trucks
illegally stopping along the R72 to pick
up passengers and using the Port Alfred
CBD as an overnight truck stop, when
there is a large yard truck stop for that
purpose on Albany Road.
Since the roadworks have been in
progress for the past three years, the
painted lines along Southwell Road and
Albany Road have disappeared,
sometimes temporarily reappeared –
particularly at the robots – but then
disappeared again.
We are thankful for the solid white
barrier line and lane lines which were
recently painted along Southwell Road,
although it is unnerving when large
trucks simply run over the barrier line
going downhill and partially cross over
into the oncoming traffic lane.
However, we have also been missing
the red lines along the shoulders of
Southwell Road which clearly indicated it
was a no stopping zone.
In the past there was occasional
policing of trucks breaching this rule, but
since the lines disappeared it seems a
f r e e - fo r - a l l .
But lines or not, surely the same
principle applies – it is still a no stopping
zone. It is incredibly dangerous when
driving behind a truck passing through
town when the driver decides to stop in
the single lane – there is no shoulder –
and force you to go around him.
This happens more frequently at night,
especially on the section between Main
Street and the Wesley Hill intersection.
One of the reasons there are more
traffic infringements at night is because
our traffic department seems to avoid
shift work, and it is rare to see a traffic
cop at night.
But oddly, one does occasionally come
across a traffic patrol car parked near
East Coast Motors in Main Street in the
early evening.
Our local traffic police need to be more
visible along the R72, where most traffic
violations happen – and the most
dangerous violations at that – rather than
just parking in Main Street.
R72 ‘upgrades’ do not
satisfy traffic needs
I totally agree with the TotT
assessment of the upgrades
(or lack thereof) made to the
R 72 .
The opportunity should have
been taken to widen this main
thoroughfare to cater for the
traffic needs – not just of
today, but to look ahead to
what the requirements will be
in five, 10 or 20 years’ time.
There is no doubt in
anyone’s mind that the volume
of traffic, and especially the
volume of heavy trucks passing
through Port Alfred, is going to
increase exponentially with the
passage of time.
NOW was the time and
opportunity to widen the road
in order to cater for the future.
As was pointed out in the
article, the one glaring
bottleneck to me is the
intersection of Pascoe Crescent
with the R72.
With more than ample space
available, why was the
opportunity not taken to create
a designated right turning lane
AND A PASSING LANE, thus
allowing through-flowing traffic
to proceed unhindered along
the R72?
With the ample space
available, it begs an answer.
To me, the same seems to
apply to the R72 between the
traffic lights at the intersection
with Wesley Hill and the Main
Street intersection.
Without the benefit of yet
having white lines painted on
the road surface, it seems that
each side of the carriageway is
just wide enough for
one-and-a-half lanes of traffic,
but just not enough for two
lanes on each side.
Strange isn’t it?
And, as pointed out in the
newspaper, why is the width of
Albany Road not wider as the
carriageway enters and exits
our town, that is to say, the
section between the
R67/Bathurst Road and Hallier
St reet?
It’s an opportunity being
missed.
Kerb a recipe
for traffic disaster
We, as business owners on the R72/Albany
Road are amazed and appalled at what is going
on.
For more than a year now, the road has been
dug up and re-compacted several times. We
couldn’t believe that a kerb was being laid in
the “middle” of the road.
This is going to be a dangerous section of
road! The trucks are still rolling and thundering
along at well over the speed limit with no hope
of stopping should someone stall or
miscalculate when turning into our parking lots.
Why not turn some of the intended paved
areas into cycle paths, providing protection to
riders and pedestrians?
Prevention best in
fight against biliary
Most of the cats we see at the practice at the
moment come in with a clinical complaint of
l e t h a r g y, no appetite and pale to yellow gums.
These cats are normally very sick by the time
they arrive at the clinic, because most of them
were out in the bush for a few days and upon
their return, the owners pick up that the cat is
sick. A blood smear is a quick and cheap way of
determining if the cat has been infected with
biliary or Babesia felis.
It is a tick-borne parasite that is transmitted to
cats when the tick sucks blood, but fleas can
also be a mechanical vector.
The disease only occurs along the coastal belt
of SA. Any cats that recently moved down from
the rest of South Africa are at a greater risk of
contracting the disease and not survive.
Cat biliary is difficult to treat as injectable
Primaquin has to be administered for a couple
of treatments, along with supportive drip
therapy and antibiotics for secondary infections,
and this can become a very costly affair.
Often these cats succumb due to the severity
of the clinical signs and the body’s response.
If the cat has an underlying feline leukaemia
or feline Aids infection it is unlikely to have a
good outcome. It is preventable to a great extent
if the cat is treated against fleas and ticks.
Prevention is better than cure and there are
numerous products on the market that can help
to prevent the disease. Contact the Kowie Vet on
action against the perpetrators, who
were jailed for the duration of the war.
Smuts was appointed field marshal
of the British army, thus his
closeness to the British
establishment ultimately cost him the
1948 general elections as anti-British
sentiment still ran high.
The South African Army, in 1939,
numbered 5,353 regulars and 14,631
in the Active Citizen Force. Pre-war
plans did not anticipate the army
would fight outside Southern Africa,
being trained and equipped only for
bush warfare.
A serious shortage of men and the
race policies of the time precluded
all other groups. Conscription was
never an option. The army and its
deployment overseas depended on
volunteers. The Cape Corp was
formed to include blacks, coloureds
and Indians.
The newly formed armed forces
proved themselves in many areas of
the war, such as the North African
and Italian campaigns with men
serving in the RAF [Royal Air Force]
with distinction
and in the
n av y,
protecting the
vital sea route
The South
African Army
and Air Force
played a major
role in defeating the Italians in the
East African Campaign and liberating
Madagascar from the Vichy French,
preventing its seizure by the Japanese.
There were tragedies, such as at
Tobruk, followed by victory against
[Erwin] Rommel's Africa Corp at El
Alamein.
The South African Air Force made
significant contributions in Malta,
East and North Africa, Sicily, Italy, the
Balkans and with supply missions to
support the Warsaw Uprising.
It is recorded that 211,000 whites,
77,000 blacks and 46,000 coloureds
Question: Tell us about your
occup ation.
Answer: I am an
occupational therapist. I work
with people who have been
injured or have a disability
and want to return to
work, school or home as
independently as
possible.
I love my job and
honestly think it’s unfair
to get paid for what I do
– my job brings me much
joy. I am very blessed to
get to interact and be part of
people's journeys.
Q: What is the most
satisfying aspect of the
work you do?
A: Working with moms of
premature babies and
watching them breastfeed
their babies to health.
I’m the biggest fan of a
mom breastfeeding her
one-year-old-plus baby in
public. Go, mommy!
Breastfeeding can save the
world!
Q: What is the one tourist
aspect you would
recommend to a visitor to
the Sunshine Coast?
A: Definitely our Nando’s!
Oh wait ... we don’t have one!
Please businesspeople and
entrepreneurs, can you look
into opening a Nando’s in
Port Alfred?
Other than that, our family
really enjoys Mansfield Game
Reserve, the Fish River Resort
and Kiddies Beach.
Q: If you have a bucket
list, what is the top item
you would like to do?
A: Buy a house in Cape
Town for my mom to live in
(plus a little car for her to get
around).
Q: What is your motto in
l i fe?
A: Be authentic, be
genuine, and show Jesus to
the world by the way you live.
Q: What keeps you
motivate d?
A: When different groups of
people come together and
work as a team towards a
common goal. It puts a smile
of my face as so much more
can be achieved when we
work together!
Q: With the high
unemployment rate in our
country, what do you think
could be done to address
the situation?
A: Employment starts with
education. Good education
needs teachers, double the
amount we currently have.
For this, we need more
incentives, higher salaries for
our teachers for the extra mile
they put in as they teach and
raise our children for six
hours every day.
Government needs to invest
more in our teachers and our
education system. A 33%
pass rate won’t cut it.
Would you like a doctor
operating on your child only
knowing 33% of the human
body?
Education is the basis of
EVERY employment
oppor tunit y.
Q: Do you think enough is
being done to reduce our
carbon footprint on the
planet? If not, what do you
think could be done to
change it?
A: No, I don’t. I think we
can all do more in terms of
recycling at home and at work
– paper, cardboard, plastic
bottles and tins.
This is an easy way to do
our part to help save the
Ear th’s resources.
Q: What is your favourite
music of all time?
A: R&B and love songs.
Nothing can beat a Luther
Vandross or Whitney
Houston number!
Q: What is the one
item that is always in
your fridge?
A: Yoghurt. This was a
promise I made to myself
when I was little. “I have
arrived!”
Q: If you could be
president of SA for one day,
what would be the top
three things you would do
for your day in office?
A: Open a Nando’s in Port
Alfred (top priority)!
On a serious note: I would
declare cigarettes, alcohol,
dagga (along with every other
drug) illegal.
I feel a sober SA will be
able to tackle personal, social
and environmental challenges
much more effectively.
I’d inject billions into child
protection, safety, neglect and
prevention. Mobilise more
places of safety and more
families willing to assist in
protecting our children.
Education and promotion of
healthy, loving and supportive
parenting and providing the
the main focus.
I would also look into
increasing and developing
more sheltered employment
and skills centres for our
population whose talents are
more technically inclined and
who are able to make a living
from their handy skills.

Port Alfred community
members are invited to a
health and disability
awareness day that will be held
at Titi Jonas Hall on Friday
September 6, from 9am till
1pm.
The purpose of the day is to
make people aware of any
health issues they might have,
because various tests will be
conducted on the day,
including a pap smear, breast
check-up, HIV testing and TB
t e st i n g .
There will be different stalls
for people to explore.
Teri- Lee Baartman, who is
an occupational therapist at
the Port Alfred Hospital, said
that this is not only for
disabled people, but for all
residents.
“We want the community to
come and do health checks,
and the first 200 people to
come will be provided with
snacks and lunch,” Baar tman
said.
“People need to know that
we will also have stalls from
Rotary, Social Development,
SAPS, and other resourceful
stalls, so that they know when
they have people or families
with substance abuse and
other problems that they know
where to go for help.
“This will be a day full of
information for the community,
so people must come in their
numbers,” she said.
“Another aim of this day is to
raise awareness about health
and disability in general,
bridge gaps and celebrate our
differences and abilities.
“The public can expect a
jam-packed programme
including the following:
collaborative performances by
our children attending special
care centres and schools,
different crafts and displays for
sale at a number of stalls, local
vendors selling snacks, food
and beverages, three speakers
on skills development,
motivational and educational
talks, fun, interactive, and
information sharing
opportunities with
professionals from the
hospital, TB, HIV, hypertension
and diabetic screening and fun
activities for the kiddies.”
L AST Saturday saw the
inaugural Port Alfred High
School Colour Run take place
at and around the school
sports fields, with over 200
runners and walkers
complete the course while
being peppered with
pastel-coloured powder. The
event was a fundraiser for the
school and drew many more
participants than the
organisers had originally
envisioned. Organiser of the
colour run, Nicola Coetzee,
was delighted as she
watched school funds
accumulate and thanked
everyone for their support in
this important initiative. Also
on Saturday, the Port Alfred
Community Policing Forum
sold cakes at the Rosehill
The event was a complete
success and cakes sold
throughout the morning and,
by about 11am, cakes were
sold out. Well done to CPF.
WELL, we have come to the
end of “women’s month”, so
it’s time to consider if the
month awareness of crimes
against women and children
has been successful. There
were a number of high-profile
cases in just the last week of
women’s month including the
appalling murder of UCT
student Uyinene Mrwetyana
and even the kidnapping of
six-year-old Amy-Leigh de
Jager that occurred the day
after Women’s month ended.
To all those potential
women-beaters, rapists and
kidnappers; to pick on a
person that is weaker than
you is an act of cowardice.
You are deliberately harming
another individual physically,
causing mental damage and,
in some cases, even death.
Real men do not take
advantage of women and
children. If you want to hit
someone, join a boxing gym
where, at least, someone will
be able to fight back on an
equal footing. Not man
enough to do that? I didn’t
think so.
Rosehill Mall Art and Crafters
Market, the first Saturday of every
month, from 9am-4pm. A true art and
general lack of money
available in the country and
massive unemployment, SA
runs a very real risk of
another financial recession at
any stage. This, in turn,
discourages investment
leading to more
unemployment and a longer
and darker recession. It is
odd when finance Minister
Tito Mboweni issued a
discussion document
highlighting possible plans
for strengthening the
economy and job creation,
and unions and political
parties have their own
agendas. These are usually
based on ensuring votes in
any upcoming election, and
seem to have rejected the
m i n i st e r ’s ideas regarding
state-owned enterprises,
specifically Eskom. The
problem is, the politicians
only look at the next five-year
term while citizens must look
at the longer-term issues. We
need electricity, but Eskom
have overloaded the system
by employing far more people
than necessary. No business
can run successfully in these
circumstances. Cut the fat
and let’s sell some of our
assets while introducing new
businesses into the arena.
Privatisation is not a dirty
word, it is the only way some
of these companies will
survive. Oh, and to add insult
to injury, the price of petrol
increased at midnight on
CELEBRATING GRANNIES AND GRANDPAS: The
pupils in the Port Alfred High School
pre-primary classes celebrated their
grandparents with a special tea and
sing-along in their playground on Monday.
Lilian Sneli and her granddaughter Minentle
enjoyed the sun and one another’s company
ROB KNOWLES
At just 13 years of age,
Trenton Webster is a bit
of superstar with
respect to pigeon racing,
having won many of the
competitions at the Kowie
Pigeon Racing Club and at
other events in 2010.
The son of veteran pigeon
racer, Dr Tommy Webster,
Trenton was first introduced
to the sport when he was
given Moekie Show Pigeons
to raise and enter in a
competition.
“I didn’t like that,” he said.
“The pigeons didn’t do
anything, they just looked
pretty. I wanted something
more exciting,” he said. That
was when a friend gave the
young lad, just 10 at the
time, his first six racing
pigeons, and Trenton was
h o o ke d .
He explained how a racing
pigeon was raised.
“The pigeons are kept in
the loft for two weeks, and
then we let them fly around
the house to get themselves
familiar with the
environment.
“The first time we let them
out about 10km from home
and watch as they find their
way back to the loft.”
Trenton explained that,
aside from being able to see
the landscape, pigeons also
had a magnetic sense of the
direction they needed to
travel in.
Surprisingly, perhaps, he
also explained that pigeons
could literally “smell” the
direction home from around
6km.
Trenton joined the Kowie
Pigeon Racing Club and the
Eastern Province Pigeon
Union and began competing
in earnest.
He was then racing
against established pigeon
racers from Bathurst to East
London, as well as inland as
far as Graaff-Reinet and
Komani (Queenstown).
And, with the racing
season drawing to a close,
Trenton has certainly won
more than his fair share of
races in 2019. He won three
club races and the
Federation Race from
Greytown in KwaZulu-Natal,
the Baby Sale Race for firsttime
racing pigeons at the
Kowie Pigeon Racing Club,
with birds he raised from
hatchlings, as well as several
of the club pools.
He also won the Red Race,
where birds with red in their
plumage compete together.
Trenton said birds are
retired from racing when
they are over three years old
and that five of his original
six birds had now been
retired.
He breeds about 120 birds
per year but loses some due
to predators (particularly
peregrine falcons), or
through game fences and
power lines, he said.
He further said the sport
was not cheap as all the
birds needed vitamin
supplements so that their
feathers were maintained
and they remained healthy.
His desire is to have birds
compete at the Dias Loft in
Kenton-on-Sea where birds
compete in national
competitions.
Asked if he wanted to
follow in his father’s
footsteps as a medical
doctor, Trenton was quite
certain he did not.
“I’ll carry on racing as a
hobby, but I perhaps want to
be a vet,” he said.
TAKE CARE OUT THERE
Three weeks ago, an acquaintance of
mine was attacked and stabbed in a
violent incident in Sunnyside on a
Saturday evening.
He had just reached his front gate
when he was attacked by two
knife-wielding men. They stabbed him in
the head, torso and arms, beat him with
a large stick, stole cash and various
personal items from him, and fled.
The man, in his early seventies and
bleeding profusely, managed to alert
neighbours who rushed him to hospital
where he was treated and later received
a couple of units of blood. Thankfully, he
is on the road to recovery, and police
investigations continue.
In another incident, also in Sunnyside,
a female student was robbed at
knifepoint one afternoon last week. Her
screaming alerted neighbours and they
chased the two culprits. Hi-Tec Security
personnel responded quickly and
apprehended two men. The stolen goods
were recovered.
In the wake of the latest incidents,
Hi-Tec Security said: “Caring neighbours
are such a blessing. Keep on helping
each other and caring for one another –
it’s what makes Makhanda such a
special place.”
Wise words from Hi-Tec!
Meanwhile, residents have been urged
to exercise extreme caution when out
walking, jogging or cycling in and
around Makhanda, especially at night,
and preferably not alone.
PAYMENTS UP TO DATE
In a memorandum to members last
week, Grahamstown Residents’
Association (GRA) chair Philip
Machanick revealed that Makana
Municipality continues to keep up to
date with its current electricity account
payments to Eskom. Machanick said the
payment plan was made an order of the
high court in June 2019.
BIG DAY FOR PETS AND VETS
Grahamstown SPCA has, for the past
three weeks, been on the receiving end
of a steady stream of monetary
donations for its big “Spay Day” in
Makhanda on Saturday September 14
when more than 20 veterinarians from
across the Eastern Cape will be involved
in the mass sterilisation campaign.
They will be aiming to sterilise at least
100 dogs and cats, and are hoping to
send each dog home with a new collar
CLOCKING UP THE MILEAGE
Between them, the first three men and
first three ladies at last Saturday’s
parkrun in Makana Botanical Gardens
have completed no fewer than 510
parkruns.
Apart from being pretty fast over the
course, they’re also highly experienced
over the undulating 5km course.
First finisher was Cee-Jay Porthen (147
parkruns), followed by Kennedy Simango
(46) and Sylvester Jeffries (67). First
three ladies were Elisa Kirigin (88
parkruns), followed by Kimberleigh
Oxenham (90) and Zenobia Louw (72).
On a day when there were 103 runners,
joggers and walkers, Peter Wentworth
completed his 150th parkrun.
Parkruns are held each Saturday at
8am from the entrance to the botanical
gardens in Lucas Avenue.
ON THE TRAILS
It was bitterly cold last Saturday morning
when nine athletes set off from PJ
Olivier on the hill at the start of the
Oldenburgia 50km trail run in the hilly
area to the south of Makhanda.
Conditions were a little warmer the
following day for the start of the
Oldenburgia 30km, 15km and 8km trail
run events.
Organising the events, were Nicola
Brown, Carey Currie, Clare Riley and
GADS REMEMBERED
When I came across the entry for the
Grahamstown Amateur Dramatic Society
(GADS) in the Grahamstown 1966
Directory, I immediately thought of Stella
Patrick who I worked with in the cit y
t reasurer’s department of Grahamstown
Municipality for quite a few years.
She was a stalwart member of the
GADS, but passed away quite a few
years ago.
At one stage, GADS used to meet and
rehearse in the Union Church in Frere
Street above the Kingswood College
campus. Sadly, the church buildings
burnt down a few years ago and GADS
is, as far as I am aware, no more.
HOLDENS AND FIATS
Okay, let’s take our minds back to the
1960s and 1970s in the then
Grahamstown and pretend I was in the
market to buy a new car. Where would I
go and who would I consult with a view
to buying a new Holden or a new Fiat?
For the Holden I would have seen
Wally Kent at Williams Hunt (EP) at 110
High Street, and for the Fiat, Joe or Basil
Ellmore at Ellmore’s Motor Services at
the corner of African and Milner Streets.
GRAEME IN CAPE TOWN
As part of the Cape Youth Cricket
Festival being played in Cape Town this
month, the Graeme College First Xl will
play Bergvliet High School on the 20th
and Somerset College on the 21st.
Graeme has two T20 matches lined up
for September 22 – against Milnerton
High School (hello, Milnerton High!) and
Westerford High School.
NOT FORGOTTEN
I happened to be on the western side of
Church Square the other day and noticed
that the EPBS lettering is still in place on
the side of the double-storey building at
the corner of Hill and High st reets.
Younger Makhandans might not be
aware, but the Eastern Province Building
Society (EPBS) had its head office (until
it moved to the floor above Edgars in
High Street) and Grahamstown branch in
that building many years ago.
Names I remember from those days of
the EPBS, are Ron Munford, Trevor
Jennings, Trevor Wiblin, Ian Mills, John
Ellmore, Aiden Greaves and Ron Cleland.
GUNS AND AMMO
I visited Foodeez, the new grocery
factory shop, the other day and noticed
that the previous occupant at 25 Hill
Street still has its signboard hanging
over the pavement. In fact, it almost
appears to be the original sign and
reads: “AN White – Guns and
Ammunition”.
So, guns and ammunition have now
made way for tinned food, sweets,
cookies, energy drinks, household
cleaning products and more.

... what’s happening
Port Alfred Bowling Club
Congratulations to Phil Taylor,
Emile Jurgensen and Jim
Truscott, who won the Radue
Trips last Tuesday afternoon.
Phil Taylor has won his
quota of winnings for the
year and will now be
handicapped. He strongly
disagrees with this action.
Our men had a very good
afternoon at Kenton last
Thursday and won all four of
their games. Very impressive!
You made up for our ladies
who lost both their games.
We are now in the lead with
the Les Clark and behind with
the Doris Ford competitions.
This weekend was the final
notice on the bar.
Kowie Bowling Club
In the previous two issues,
we traced the development of
the spherical bowl from the
time it was first used to run
on a grassy surface (circa
12th century) till well into the
20th century.
At that stage, changes in
the configuration were
allowed to ensure the path
taken by a full-length bowl
did not infringe on the
neighbouring rink.
In 1987, the old Master
Bowl which had been used
for reference since 1931, now
had to be replaced by a new,
narrow-bias Master Bowl
which depicted the narrowest
permissible bias. With
variations in bias now
becoming available,
manufacturers were
instructed to give each
variation a name and the old
Heavyweight Deluxe Model
was then called “Classic”.
Before 1987, a player
selecting a new set of bowls
would be limited to a size
where the diameter of the
bowl would vary from 116mm-
127mm, which on the bowl
read as 00 to 5 or even 7.
The bias would be constant
and equal to the “Classic”.
The only model available in
SA was the Heavyweight
model that weighed 60g
more than the mediumweight
models.
In the post-1987 era, the
manufacturers asked the top
bowlers in Australia to
provide them with
specifications for their ideal
bowl.
The consensus was that
the bowls should run as wide
as possible, as long as it
stayed within the confines of
the rink. The “Classic 11”
fulfilled these specifications.
When a bowl is delivered it
will spin forward in the
direction dictated by the
player but as friction slows it
down an opposing force –
brought about by an
asymmetrical centre of
gravity (the bias) – will push
the bowl at right angles to its
original course and the bowl
will tend to curve, and as it
slows down still more it will
fall over and come to rest.
It is for the manufacturer to
decide when and to what
extent the “opposing force”
will start influencing the run
of the delivered bowl.
By this time, the insistence
on starting with a spherical
bowl no longer applied.
The decade between 1992
and 2002 saw a great
demand for bowls with a
narrow bias and the
manufacturers experimented
with different profiles, some
of which have been
discarded.
By lopping off a little from
either side of the bowl, the
manufacturers could supply a
narrower bowl which fitted
snugly into a smaller hand.
The most dramatic
modification was flattening
the running surface so the
bowl ran on a straight
trajectory for longer before
the running surface reached
that part of the bowl where
the curve was more abrupt
and the bias swung the bowl
into a “hockey stick” turn.
Imagine the poor novice
faced by all these choices.
Last Tuesday was the kind
of day you would want to
spend outdoors and play
bowls. Jacques Krige, Bugs
Wilmot, and Rob Sandiland
proved to be just too much
for their opponents.
On Thursday, we started
the first round of the club
drawn Trips and had some
interesting results.
The winners go through to
the next round, while the
losers play in the plate event.
The overall competition
was won by Michael van der
Sandt, Ed Cutten, and Linda
M ay.
On Saturday, the fair
weather bowlers stayed away
but a lot of fun was still had.
Jonty Alexander, Basil
Clarke, and Rob Turner came
in with a 10 plus 16 and won
the mega-bucks.
Congrats to Eric Kent,
Jacques Krige, and Grumpy
Enslin on being runners-up in
the EA Trips – they only lost
to the winners by one shot.
Kenton Bowling Club
Last Thursday, the Kenton
ladies welcomed two teams
of ladies from the Port Alfred
Bowling Club for the Doris
Ford competition.
The Kenton ladies won
both of the matches, so
congratulations to them.
They will have to keep up
their winning ways though,
as they are a fair bit behind
Port Alfred in the year-to-date
st a n d i n g s .
At the same time, the men
hosted four Port Alfred teams
for the Les Clarke
competition and were
absolutely hammered by the
opposition. They did not win
a single game and managed
a whole four points out of the
forty on offer.
At least the eats provided
at tea time were good.
On Friday afternoon, the
rivalry between the ladies
and men’s novices continued
as two more matches were
played. The honours were
shared with the ladies
winning the one match and
the men the other.
At the club that night it
was a very quiet affair as a
lot of our Friday night
regulars are away in various
corners of SA on holiday.
Nevertheless, the
Attendance Draw was done
and missed by Willem Janse
van Rensburg.
Then it was time for the
Joker Draw and Marlene
Fr a n k l i n ’s name was drawn
giving her the opportunity to
try and find the Joker.
She unfortunately could
not find the right card so the
kitty increases again.
On Sunday, our ladies’
team of Lynn West, Pippa
Swift, Sheila Walker and
Rose Catto travelled to
Makhanda to play their last
match of the EA fours
competition against Sandra
Wiblin’s team from Port
Alfred.
Our ladies were two up
playing the last end, but
unfortunately they dropped
two shots and had to walk
away with a peeled game.
The feeling among some of
the more experienced
bowlers at the grounds
though was that this is a
team that will be competition
winners in the not too distant
future.
Our braai area at the club
has been given a complete
make-over with a new built-in
braai and big bench seats.
It has been done very
neatly and looks great.
Thanks to our building
supervisor Westy for his hard
work.
This Thursday is the SPAR
sponsored day at the club
and Saturday is “Social
S at u r d ay ” with eats.
On Sunday we have two
mixed teams going to
Makhanda to take part in the
champagne GBS competition
that is being hosted by the
Grahamstown Bowling Club.
Port Alfred High School swimmers
excelled at the Ultimate Swim Club gala
held in East London on Saturday,
amassing 33 medals.
Coach Roger Nock was ecstatic.
“Unbelievable results!” he said. “This,
East London.”
The five PAHS swimmers – K at e
silver and five bronze medals.
In the process, Will Beatt set four new
records.
Saffron Tweedie took two silver
medals and two bronze.
“Mention must be made of her swim
in the third leg of the relay race where
she took off in last position and had
everyone on their feet as she overtook
the other teams one by one to take the
lead,” Nock said.
Kate Tinley came home with a gold,
five silver and two bronze medals.
Emily Beatt collected a gold, six silver
and a bronze medal.
Scarlett Tweedie won four gold and
three silver medals.
TRIUMPHANT STARS: PAHS swimmers, back, from left, Saffron Tweedie, Kate
Tinley, Emily Beatt, and, front, from left, Scarlett Tweedie and Will Beatt with
the medals they won at the Ultimate Swim Club gala in East London
Will Beatt bagged no fewer than six
gold medals. He also set four new
records in the 100m freestyle, 200m
backstroke, 100m backstroke and the
50m backstroke.
“Congratulations to all,” Nock said.

FISHAWAYS PORT ALFRED MIXED
August 31
The morning broke cold with gale
force westerlies sweeping the
course. A diminished field in terms
of numbers of players resulted.
Barry Brady, Margie Reid and Barry
Brady carded 83 points to win the
morning’s proceedings and, as a
result, were rewarded with
Fishaways vouchers. Margie Reid
also won a bottle of wine courtesy of
the RPAGC for being
“c l o s e st - t o - t h e - p i n ” on the 8th. The
best nett round was shot by Heather
van Harmelen a superb 66 given the
weather conditions pertaining. There
were no 2-clubs.
L ADIES’ R E S U LTS
August 27
Despite the sun being out with
scudding clouds, the weather
conditions on Tuesday afternoon
were windy and cold with strong
gusts sweeping across the course
causing the 20 players some serious
questions with respect to club
choice. The competition was a
better-ball Stableford sponsored by
the Ocean Basket.
Wendy Counihan and Heather van
Harmelen won the afternoon’s
proceedings by counting out Glynnis
Renecle and Donné Piguet (who
netted a fine 66) into second place,
both teams carding 43 points. Jenny
Adair and Maureen McGarvie came
home third with 41 points.
Trish Barwick (6th) and Prue
Peacock (8th) both sunk birdies on
the holes indicated, the latter having
struck her ball closest to this hole
sponsored by the Rosehill Driving
Range. Kim Gardner’s drive was
closest to the pin on Top Carpets’ 6th
and Sonia Reynolds was closest on
Wimpy’s 11th. Wendy Counihan’s
second shot on Kekkel and Kraai's
13th was nearest the pin.
The longest drive competitions were
held on the fourth fairway and struck
by Ronel Hough and Donné Piguet in
the lower and higher handicap
sections respectively.
The competition on September 10
will be a 3-ball alliance sponsored by
the Royal St Andrews Camelot Spa.
Thursday August 29: Another
Thursday morning competition was
organised by the Ladies’ Section and
attracted 12 players in a better-ball
S t a b l e fo r d .
Rosie Calmeyer-Leach and Jill Lake
carded a match winning 45 points
with Trish Barwick and Sandy Fryer
occupying the runners-up slot with
42 points.
around the world
Running for causes
knows no boundaries
MAN ON A MISSION: From left, and running for a cause, Russian athlete
extraordinaire Ruslan Shakin with Rory McNelis and Sticks Stiglingh when
he visited the Kowie Striders at the Port Alfred Country Club on
Tuesday
Picture: ROB KNOWLES
ROB KNOWLES
Russian runner supreme
Ruslan Shakin, who is
currently running from Cape
Town to Durban in order to
raise funds and awareness for the
Clean Drinking Water for Africa
project, was greeted by the Kowie
Striders at the Port Alfred Country
Club last Tuesday evening.
This forms part of Shakin’s Run
Around the Southern Hemisphere
i n i t i at i v e .
To put his achievements into
context, a brief overview of Shakin’s
journey in the four years he has been
running for causes, is necessary.
Shakin ran across Japan, down the
North and South islands of New
Zealand, across Australia and from
Mendoza in Argentina to Chile.
Of course, that does not include
his 3,000km run from Cape Town to
Durban, where he will end his South
African visit by competing in the
Comrades Marathon.
In 2019 alone, Shakin has run
about 13,000km – the equivalent of
25.5 standard marathons per month
(1,085km per month).
These phenomenal achievements
show not only his physical prowess,
but also his mental strength in being
able to run off injuries.
Shakin takes everything he needs
with him when he runs and pushes a
three-wheeler pram weighing more
than 40kg (when running across the
Outback Shakin, he took extra water
and his pram weighed in at more
than 80kg).
He has run up mountains,
sometimes more than once, across
deserts, along coastlines ... and he
keeps on running.
On his arrival at the club, he
appeared more relaxed following his
40km run that day than most of
those attending who had just had a
day at work and run a 5km time trial.
His easy-going manner and
frankness about his experiences
while running, begged lots of
questions from the Striders.
Rory McNelis was the man
responsible for bringing Shakin to
the club and was pleased to be
hosting him before he set off again to
continue his journey on Wednesday.
At the club, he also met Kowie
Striders chair Sticks Stiglingh and
club captain and Comrades legend
Alan Robb.
“I don’t know where to start,” he
c o n fe s s e d . “It would be better if you
asked questions.”
There followed a barrage of
questions from excited Striders.
Shakin said that while running
around the world, he had met
interesting people and seen a lot of
the countries he has run through.
“I have been stopped by police in
Aust ralia,” he said. “They are very
polite.”
The police told him that people had
seen him on the road and were
concerned about him.
He was asked about mental
preparation, but Shakin did not
reveal if he did anything specifically,
yet the Striders certainly appeared to
be amazed with Shakin’s ability to
focus and to run so far for so long.
He said that he ran between 40km
and 50km per day, pushing his pram.
When asked about accommodation
during his trips, Shakin answered he
was either offered accommodation by
people along the way or else he
camped in a tent he carried with the
rest of his kit.
Asked whether he had had to camp
while in SA, Shakin answered that he
had not.
Asked about injuries, Shakin said
he had had blisters and that he
suffered from a knee injury while in
South America, but he simply ran it
of f.
Asked whether he saw a doctor
regularly, he answered, “Why? Do
you think I need to?”
Follow Shakin’s journey on his
Facebook page, “Ruslan Shakin” or, if
you wish to assist in his project, visit
name and surname after clicking on
PAINT PARTY: Youngsters having a blast at the end of Port Alfred High School’s inaugural and very successful Colour Run
at the school’s sports field on Saturday
Picture: ROB KNOWLES
PAHS field explodes in a pastel cloud
at well-supported Colour Run finale
ROB KNOWLES
With far more people
attending the
inaugural Port Alfred
High School Colour
Run on Saturday
morning than was
initially envisioned,
the school’s sports
field was packed with
more than 200
runners out to have
fun.
Children and
adults, and even a
few pet dogs, lined
up to compete in the
vibrant 5km affair,
and to get doused in
p a st e l - c o l o u r e d
powder paints.
At the end of the
race, the competitors
again gathered and
cast their powder into
the air, creating a
multi-coloured cloud
that quickly
dissipated, but not
before ensuring the
runners were fully
drenched in colour.
Just before the race
began, as competitors
gathered, so did the
rain clouds overhead,
and a few drops of rain
could be felt.
This might have put
a damper on the race,
but the clouds
dispersed and left a
beautiful first-dayof-spring
morning in its
wake; a little chilly, but
ideal conditions for the
race.
With music playing
loudly to add to the
atmosphere, the race
got under way and the
throng set off.
Of course, some
runners couldn’t resist
the urge to throw their
bags of paint at the
start of the race, but
most held back,
awaiting the
completion of the event
when they would create
a pastel cloud above
the sports fields.
The first adult runner
