As a kid I dreamed of being a few things, a spy and a horse
trainer. I was pretty determined to be both. I had all the spy
equipment you could possibly make out of toilet paper rolls,
wrapping paper tubes, and anything and everything that
was around the house that was of use in creating my spy
world. I created puzzles for my siblings and often made them
be tied up or held hostage while I did my spy thing and then
rescued them. I even went as far as learning how to tie
different knots so I could capture my brothers the villains in
every scene. The horse trainer was a bit more complicated,
we did not have horses, so I had made a deal with my best
friends’ mom and dad to clean out their animal stalls for time
to watch them train and then learn how to ride and barrel
race better. I also went to camp all summer long and watched
all the trainers with the horses. When I was at home between
spy missions and reading about spies, I read everything I
could about being a horse trainer. Obviously, I never became
a spy or a horse trainer, but I do have a petting zoo so in my
books that counts for something.
The world of opportunities water is like the
dreams we had as a kid. There are so many
opportunities within the industry.
Engineers, operators, public works,
suppliers and the lists go on. There
are always opportunities around us
to learn more, do more and grow
more in our areas or in other
areas within the same
industry.
We are on the edge of a crisis
in our industry and in some
ways we are already in crisis,
we have a lot of operators and
those with a lot of knowledge
ready to retire or who have
retired, and we are not always
getting the opportunity to
KELLY’S CORNER
a world of
opportunities
have them train the ones replacing them. In a world of
opportunities within the industry we need to ask ourselves a
few questions; how do we relate to the new generation of
workers and communicate with them in effective ways that
don’t exasperate them or us? How do we engage with
younger people leaving high school or entering into their
final years of high school about this industry and its
opportunities? How do we as leaders in our areas show
others how to become leaders that are even better at
communicating and being leaders? In this world of
opportunities how do we be the tools to help others?
This year we are celebrating 39 years as an association, next
year is the BIG 40!! In the last 39 years so many things have
changed in our industry and in the next 39 even more will
have changed. So now we are faced with how we plan for the
future, become leaders in the industry, embrace
opportunities and new ideas and grow as both an
association and as people involved in this
industry full of opportunity. The first thing we
need to do is ask what are you looking for? What
are your thoughts and ideas? As an
association we are stronger when we
work together sharing ideas and
thoughts. I want to hear from you –
where do you see us? What are your
ideas? Please send me your ideas
via our SWWA office at
office@swwa.ca I look forward
to hearing from you.
Have a great fall & I hope to see
you all in November at the
conference.
SWWA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Fall’s
Arrival
Well, I saw my first sign of Autumn ...
there was a mom carrying her child’s
hockey bag into the rink for hockey
school. Usually that sight is followed up
by a rant on how spoiled kids are these
days, and the one skating should be the
one carrying the bag, but that’s for
another time.
It’s been a good summer, hopefully
everyone found some time to enjoy it. I
hope your communities got all their
scheduled projects done in time. With
any luck, they all came in under budget.
As I’m writing this, there is a realization
that my time as SWWA President is
winding down. The last 4 years have
been a blur. It’s gone by so fast that it’s
hard to believe that I won’t be at the
helm any longer. My time on the board
has given me such a better
understanding of how the water
wastewater industry impacts not just
communities as a whole, but each and
every member of those communities.
Those of you that have had the
opportunity to serve your city or town in
the role of Operator, should feel a sense
of pride and accomplishment for the
work you do. I’ve not always realized
how important my job is, nor the
amount of people that are affected by
the work I do on a day-to-day basis. The
we want
YOU
more Operators, suppliers, and
Engineers I’ve met over the past few
years gives me a lot of pride to be
involved with a group of people who
have a passion for the work that others
find mundane. Never forget how
important you are to your community.
There are few industries that affect
every person every single day like we
do. I’ll be hanging around for another
few years, so you’ve got that to look
forward to (chorus of groans), and I
hope to continue to build more
relationships with more members as the
years go on.
The inevitable is upon us. Fall is right
around the corner, and with it comes
preparations for the SWWA conference.
This year, the newly unveiled conference
app with help direct you through the
agenda, the process, the tradeshow, and
the schedule of events at the annual
November event! The bugs should all
be worked out by November, but
remember, it’s an ‘I.T’ thing, so anything
can happen. Expect the unexpected!
I can’t wait to see you all again for
another great conference. With any luck,
we’ll bring this August weather with us
into November!!
Possibility of Becoming
A Certified Operator
As of July 15, 2005, owners of a waterworks and/or sewage works must
ensure the operation, maintenance and repair of these works is under
the direction of an operator certified at facility class level. In these
cases, a facility’s main operator must be appropriately certified at
facility class level in any one or all of the following categories where
applicable:
n
Water treatment;
I often do not know what to say
when people ask me, “what do
you do for work?” Working in
the water and wastewater industry
stretches most of us into all kinds of
different disciplines where we are
the master of none. However, it does
provide us a
“world of
opportunities”
and a world of unique experiences.
When I look back over the years that
I have been in this industry I have
seen many areas that are exciting
and interesting. Things that I would
love to have time to explore more.
Frequently I meet with people that
are working in the area of city
planning, chemistry, biological
treatment of water and wastewater
and experts in SCADA and remote
monitoring. These topics are diverse;
however, they are all part of the
wheel that keeps our industry
turning.
We have people that are experts in
policy and regulations. They are
travelling to regional and national
meetings to discuss important topics
like the latest scientific findings on
the long-term health effects of
manganese and should we change
the MAC (Maximum Allowable
Concentration). We have others that
WHAT DO
YOU Do?
are developing and perfecting technologies that help us disinfect water, improve
coagulation and provide us with more reliable pumping equipment.
Then there are the “other” skills and opportunities that we have in the water and
wastewater field that people often overlook. The soft skills or the people side of the
industry. We need to have people that are technically savvy, but can relay
information to others. We need to have people that are ready to step into leadership
roles and become supervisors. Gone are the days when just having enough
seniority gave you the job of the supervisor. We now must demonstrate that we are
willing to learn how to relate to our staff compliment and be a competent leader.
The world in which we live and work provides us with a “world of opportunities” and
a variety of different experiences if you are willing to stretch your comfort zone. Take
the communications class, read about a new process that you are interested in, ask
the consultant the questions you have been dying to know about and be patient in
answering the new employees’ questions.
Each of us is on a journey of learning and although we may not be at the same stage
we can help and encourage each other to continue to be curious and to become
lifelong learners. That to me is a “world of opportunities”.
Dawn Dierker
ATAP
It is important for the
protection of public
health and protection
of the environment
that your community
ensures the operator
responsible for the
water and sewage
works is certified at
the appropriate level.
A community
operating a
waterworks must also
consider that their
liability insurance
coverage may be
affected by how it
complies with the
certification
regulations.
n
n
n
Water distribution;
Wastewater treatment; and/or
Wastewater collection
In addition, the Water Security Agency (WSA) strongly encourages that
facilities have a back-up operator to the main operator or have
arrangements with a similarly certified operator to take over
after-hours or in case of vacation, illness or loss of the main operator for
any reason. Please note that facilities which are classified as “hygienic
use” do not require a certified operator.
The Saskatchewan Water and Wastewater Operator Certification
Standards December, 2016 and the Operator Certification Program
Guide explain the criteria an operator needs to meet to become
certified. The WSA has developed an option for a regional or contract
operator. The publication Regional/Contract Operator also explains
how communities can share a certified operator. The publication Water
and Wastewater Training and Examinations in Saskatchewan lists the
agencies that provide training, workshops and examination sittings for
water and wastewater operators. Please visit the website
http://www.saskh2o.ca/foroperators.asp for an electronic copy of these
documents or call (306) 787-6504 for a printed copy. There is also an
“Operator in Training” certification category that applies to waterworks
classified as “Small Systems, Class I or Class II”. The “Operator in Training”
category will be helpful for those locations having difficulty in
achieving operator certification.
Once your operator has passed the appropriate certification
examination and acquired the appropriate work experience, a
certification application needs to completed and submitted to the
Operator Certification Board (OCB). An OCB brochure and certification
application is available on the Sask.H20 website under “Education and
Training”. Further information is also available from the OCB website
http://saskocb.ca/.
“For me, hygiene is the ght against
dirtiness. It’s to ensure cleanliness. For
example, washing your hands with soap
helps eliminate dirtiness and microbes. Our
club, with the support of the teachers, we
ensure cleanliness in the school. We call out
FRIDAY WORKSHOP
Meet Chad - Life Coach, Trainer, and Keynote Speaker
On April 3, 2001, Chad was involved in a serious accident,
leaving him a quadriplegic. But Chad’s dreams were not
paralyzed that day; as you can see below, he’s kept himself
busy
• He started Chad Hymas Communications, Inc., a
professional speaking company designed to motivate
businesses and corporations to “use their wings and reach
seemingly impossible heights.”
• The Wall Street Journal calls Chad Hymas one of the 10
most inspirational people in the world!
• At 37 years of age, Chad is the youngest person ever to
receive the CPAE award and be inducted into the National
Speaker Hall of Fame.
• Last year, Chad spoke at 220 different events, traveling just
over 300,000 miles and speaking on five continents and in
four countries.
• Chad has shared his personal message and entertained
many audiences from organizations such as Wells Fargo,
Blue Cross Blue Shield, Ford, IHC, Coca-Cola, and the Utah
Jazz.
Sponsored by
• He is a member of the National Speakers Association and
is a CSP (certified speaking professional), a designation
achieved by fewer than 8% in the speaking industry.
• He served as president of the National Speakers
Association Utah chapter.
• Chad maintains his hobby and dream of managing a
5100-acree elk preserve with his father, Kelly.
• He has raced in marathons and, in the summer of 2003, set
a world record by wheeling his chair from Salt Lake City to
Las Vegas (513 miles).
• Chad participates in other wheelchair athletic
competitions, including basketball, rugby, and officiating
basketball (a dream come true).
• He spends many hours with other injured individuals in
therapy, encouraging them to overcome their challenges,
focus on dreams and make them a reality, and love life for
all that it has to offer. To achieve the unachievable and to
reach for the unreachable.
• Chad’s greatest accomplishment is that he remains a
devoted husband to his loving wife, Shondell, and a proud
father to their three children, Christian, Kyler, and Gracee!

What lead you into your current field?
I have worked in the water/wastewater field
for about 20 years now, 14 with the City of
Saskatoon as a Research Chemist and
Laboratory Coordinator, 6 years now as an EPO
with the WSA. I was introduced into the
water/wastewater field through the City’s labs,
and as such had an interesting exposure to
water and wastewater treatment. The switch
from the City to the Water Security Agency was
not a difficult transition. Instead of reviewing
and following Permits to Operate, I now issue
them and ensure that permittees follow them.
All in all, the work is very similar. The
opportunity with the Water Security Agency
presented itself, and I felt that the challenge
would be a refreshing change. I was right!
Tell us about some of the experiences you
have had in your current role.
There always seems to be something going on
somewhere. Usually, the problems are routine,
but occasionally, there are some very odd
issues that arise – a fire in a water plant comes
to mind.
EPO PROFILE
Bruce Dahl
Water Security Agency
Environmental Project Officer
What advice would you give someone looking to get into the industry?
Get an education. Many different fields of study can be useful in the
water/wastewater industry. Water and wastewater is something that most
people take for granted. Turn on the tap, clean water comes out. Flush the
toilet, waste disappears. The field is very important, and sometimes very
challenging. If you are someone who enjoys problem solving,
environmental responsibility, and the huge responsibility of providing
clean water and sanitation services for people, then the water industry is
for you.
What is something that you have learned that has helped you become
the person you are today?
Don’t let stress dictate your life.
Who would you say were the key influencers and influences in your life so
far?
This a difficult question. My first working opportunity was in the
Department of Biochemistry at the University of Saskatchewan. My
supervisor, Dr. Ramji Khandelwal, taught me so much about the scientific
method, which I have been able to continually utilize throughout my
career. This basic knowledge has stuck with me ever since. There are too
many others to mention.
How do you keep a work/life balance?
I try to keep work at work, but as we all know, that is very difficult. I play
Ultimate Disc in my time off, which helps a lot. Fishing, canoeing, camping,
hiking…all these outdoor activities help as well. It is an amazing province
we live in and heading up North is one of my favorite things to do.
What are your hopes for the
future?
To stay healthy and fit enough
to enjoy my retirement (if I
ever get there).
What would you say has been
one of the best moments of
your professional life to date?
Early in my career with the City
of Saskatoon, the lab asked to
help the province with an
issue at a water treatment
facility. I spent the entire
evening and night (until about
3 am) at three separate water
plants setting up sampling
apparatus. Upon analysis, the
procedure detected the
presence of cryptosporidium. I
don’t like to call that the “best
moment”, but it certainly
resulted in some major
changes, and is something
that I will always remember.
On the other hand, a cause
was found for a major
gastrointestinal outbreak, and
steps and measures were
implemented to stop the
source and hopefully prevent
any future outbreaks. As a
microbiologist
and
biochemist, this is kind of a
“win”.
How do you make a
difference in your role, what
are your strengths? What do
you think is the most valuable
asset a person can have?
I feel that I bring a knowledge
of unique aspects of water and
wastewater treatment to the
Water Security Agency. As for
assets, I firmly believe that an
open mind is one of the
greatest things a person can
have. In my experience, a
problem is better solved by a
team than any one person,
and every point of view counts
in a crisis situation.
What frustrates
leaders the most?
v Red Tape & Bureaucracy
v OLD equipment
v Budgets
v Changing Councils
all of it
v Weather
v Employees {v Town residents
In over 25 years of leadership and
management, what I’ve seen that
frustrates leaders the most, from the list
above, is people. Whether it’s the people
we report to, the people who report to us,
or the people who think we report to
them, people cause the most stress for
leaders.
Equipment can be fixed and replaced. We
can learn how to work with red tape. We
can tighten “our belts” when the budget is
tight. We can put up with the weather,
because there’s absolutely nothing we can
do about it anyway. But people are a
different story.
We can’t control people. People can be
random. People can be excruciatingly
frustrating! People can forget, people can
neglect, people can waste time and
energy. It’s not like we can replace a
moving part on a person and it’s all fixed.
No, with people we have to learn to be
better leaders.
The great thing about people though – is
when we help them reach their potential,
when we help them succeed, when we
lead in a way that gives them a reason to
be better. That’s what excites a great leader
and manager!
How have you invested in your leadership
and management skills/tools lately? This is
the only way for you to be able to get past
the frustration that people can bring! You
have the potential to bring out the best in
the people you lead, to be able to calm the
council members when you need to, to
help uptight residents of your town relax
and understand why what you do matters.
The reality is, you have a lot of training
behind you for you to be trusted to run
your town’s water treatment plant, and
that’s essential! But you also deserve to
have training behind you to help you lead
and manage the people and your role to
your fullest potential!
Don’t neglect to
invest in yourself,
it’s worth what it
will cost, and
so are you.
ClearTech Introduces the Lovibond PVT
Series of Process Turbidimeters in Canada
ADVERTORIAL
Registering for events online!!
ClearTech is the Canadian factory authorized
service centre and stocking distributor for
the new Lovibond PVT Series of Process
Turbidimeters in Canada. Lovibond, a leading
manufacturer of water analysis products
designed these turbidimeters to monitor
Low Maintenance
the low levels of turbidity found in drinking
water. The PVT Series received US EPA
approval as listed the USA Federal Register /
Vol 82 / No. 143, in section 40 CFR 141.74(a)
(1), published on Thursday, July 27, 2017.
“This is a big milestone,” says Michael Sadar,
Lovibond’s Research and Develop Manager.
“We worked hard to develop a system that
was not only user friendly, but that is able
to achieve the level of accuracy that the
operators as well as the regulators expect
from a system like this. We’re really proud of
what we were able to accomplish, and we
think that operators are really going to like
the simplicity of the overall design of the
instrument as well as the data management
tools that the mobile interface provides.”
Wherever there’s water
See Turbidity
in a New Light
With an emphasis on simplifying processes,
data management, and reducing water
usage, the design of the PTV Series
considered every aspect of process turbidity
workflow. The system is configurable to offer
operators a variety of options including
integrated flow indication and bi-directional
Bluetooth® communication between the
sensor and a mobile device. Additional
accessories to assist with installation, sample
management and routine procedures such as
calibrations and cleanings are also available.
As a stocking distributor and factory
authorized service centre, ClearTech
offers complete installation and ongoing
maintenance service on the PVT Series
Turbidimeters.
SWWA 2019 CONFERENCE Technical Sessions
TS #1 Take a little More of the Top:
How to Optimize Your Plant
Using Primary Treatment
Presenter: Dalen Crouse, Nexom
TS #2 Hydrovac -
Presenter: Tyler Nickolson
Opportunity to explain what a hydro
vac is and the different ways hydro
vacing can reduce cost, keep workers
safe and protect the environment.
Discuss each point below.
100% Verification of the
underground utilities is
accomplished by the following;
n Communication with All Parties
n Following State and Province
“One Call” laws
n Using Vacuum Excavation to
identify all underground utilities
n Protects all underground utilities
n Gas Pipelines
n Sewer and Water
n Telecommunications
n Electric
The presentation will cover the need
for safety and compliance, CGA dirt
results, environmental impact,
locating, verification, vacuum
evacuation and environmental
impact. These points are all taken into
consideration all the while gaining
100% verification of the underground
utilities.
I will also discuss the curb stop
replacement advantage with a hydro
vac and lead a group discussion on
other examples where hydro vacs
protect the worker, the equipment
and save the municipality money.
TS #3 Smart Cities, Smart Water -
How loT Devices are Transforming the City of the Future
Presenter: Michele Harvey
As “smart cities” becomes a buzzword in the industry, many utilities want to know
if this trend is just that, or if it will have any meaningful impact on their utilities and
cities. This presentation will discuss the Smart Cities movement, what it is, and how
it might be impacting your utility. It will also look at the technology around smart
cities; IoT (or Internet of Things). We’ll look at what constitutes an IoT device, what
vendors are making them, how they interface with existing systems, and why you
might want to consider them in your next purchase decision.
TS #4 Plant Performance Improvements at Town of Gravelbourg
Presenter: - Enisa Zanacic
Water treatment system at the Town of Gravelbourg processing Thomson Lake
water is comprised of UF and NF system. The water quality produced is very good,
meeting all of the regulatory requirements. However, continuously changing
source water quality is hard on the equipment in the plant impacting operation
and maintenance of the plant. Source water serving as a water supply for Town of
Gravelbourg is Thomson Lake. The water quality of the lake is of high ionic
strength, experiences frequent algal blooms and varies with season. Number of
studies and analyses, by SaskWater staff and consultants, have been undertaken in
2018/19 to reduce operation and maintenance cost of the operation as well as
improve efficiency. Operational modifications resulted in reduced chemicals use
and improved efficiency of the overall system.
never stop learning;
for when we stop
learning, we stop
growing.
Presenter: Rui(Ray) Li
The Management of a utility is a
complicated endeavor that requires
information from many sources so
that you can make good decisions and
demonstrate that you are providing a
high quality product and great service
with highly efficient operations.
Reporting of results is an increasingly
important part of transparent
operations and typically includes
documentation of key performance
indicators (KPI’s) that are measured
and tracked. These performance
measures are crafted to summarize
the details required in knowing how
the system is operating, how you are
taking care of the systems and
equipment including the
refurbishment, replacement, repair
and planning of these activities as well
as the smart use of resources such as
financial expenditures and manpower
allocations.
How do you roll this all together in a
manner that makes sense? The Asset
Management approach that will be
reviewed will include not just asset
information but also how the
feedback loop goes one step further
so that it includes tradesperson’s time,
parts and supplies in the warehouse
for maintenance planning purposes.
Other systems and practices that will
be discussed are how the team
integrated SCADA, operational and
laboratory data to help Managers
make operational decisions and
reporting easier. The presentation will
also provide an overview of the robust
document control system that is
essential to knowing how to find this
information, as having great
documentation is not helpful if
employees can’t find it.
TS #6 I ZINC WE HAD A TOXIC EVENT
Presenters: Shauna Karakochuk & Kayla Gallant
In October of 2018, the Regina Wastewater Treatment Plant experienced a significant
toxic event. This event resulted in a substantial shift in biological populations, and
the degradation of the effluent quality – which includes Total Phosphorus, E. coli, and
Total Suspended Solids. The presentation highlights the investigative process used
to determine the cause of the event, the immediate impacts within hours, the
moderate impacts within weeks, and the lasting impacts within months of the toxic
event.
As a result of the toxic event, there were 13 different process functions that were
analyzed as a part of the investigation. The investigative measures taken were
necessary to provide our client, the City of Regina, a comprehensive report outlining
the details of why the event impacted the final effluent quality. Throughout the
investigation, extensive laboratory data was collected, analyzed, and reviewed,
literature reviews were conducted, and outside experts were consulted.
During the investigation, it became apparent that there was insufficient experience
and published information available regarding a full scale toxic event within a
biological nutrient removal plant. Other than hearsay information, we did not find
any precedent for an event like ours. To determine the cause, impact, and details of
this toxic event, we were required to complete extensive research using information
from multiple technical and research sources.
In conclusion, each individual reaction to the event was thoroughly understood, and
this was significant enough to draw the firm conclusion of Zinc toxicity.
. . . having great documentation is not helpful
if employees can’t find it.

TS #8 Which pipe first?
Using Evidence based condition assessment and
desktop modelling to optimize pipe replacement
Presenter: Alain M. Lalonde
One of the primary concerns of water utility asset managers is prioritizing renewal of
buried assets that require it the most. The Region of Peel found that using their current
desktop model, they were replacing watermains in good condition. The desktop
assessment model was missing a critical parameter: evidence-based condition
information. This presentation presents the results of a pilot project that used acoustic
propagation velocity testing to gain this missing piece of critical information allowing
Peel to calibrate their desktop model and prioritize replacement decisions.
Peel is the third largest utility in Canada serving 1.38 million people. Peel maintains a
network of over 3,500 kilometers of watermains with approximately 540 kilometers of
metallic mains which are expected to exceed their theoretical service life in the next
10-15 years.
Peel is currently utilizing industry best practices, via a desktop model, focused on
watermain break history with additional parameters such as hydraulic capacity,
criticality and surrounding infrastructure to set the renewal priority. Peel has embraced
sustainability as a core value and is shifting its decision-making process regarding
water infrastructure renewal to one based on physical evidence rather than theoretical
factors alone. Physical condition assessment measurements will be used to guide
future capital expenditure requirements.
After extensive market research, acoustic propagation velocity testing was
determined to be the best tool available to measure the remaining average pipe wall
thickness. Peel engaged Echologics in a pilot study to gain condition assessment
measurements on metallic watermains in Mississauga and Brampton. Wall thickness
was measured on 15.6 kilometers of buried watermain assets with no interruption to
service, costly excavations, or extensive support from utility crews at a cost of less than
1.4 percent of watermain replacement. Three non-surfacing leaks were located during
the study reducing Peel’s non-revenue water. Watermains identified to be in poor
condition were brought forward in the replacement schedule while watermains in
good condition were deferred. This presentation discusses the results of the pilot and
how condition information was used to target spending on assets that only truly
required replacement.
WS #1 The Industrial Revolution
is Nothing to Fear or Miss
Disruptive Technologies are rampant
in Automation. Automation and
operations of Water\Wastewater it is
no different. We are seeing packaged
clarifiers which treat water with 1/10
the footprint compared to
traditional solutions. The operational
dashboard is becoming a cell phone
as well as the potential for a virtual
reality hybrid such as the holo-lens.
Rockets are sending over 10,000
satellites off over the next 5 year into
space, we currently have only 2000
satellites since the dawn of time.
Measurement is getting smaller and
more cost effective, lower power and
easier to deploy. Over the three
hours we will cover:
1. Measurement - low power
devices and lower costs, multiphase
flow measurement,
wireless process control
2. Process Improvements - What
does a low-price clarifier look
like and why the technology
can't be ignored.
3. Hardwired Communications -
from rocket launches to 5g and
how this will directly impact
you; from the grader driver to
the IT professional.
4. It’s all about the
data!!!! movement, analysis and
consumption - how do we get
the right data to the right
people at the right time in the
most efficient user-friendly
format possible. (Holo Lens may
be present.)
WS #2 Granular Media Filtration is a Batch
Process: Comparison of Various
Backwash Procedures and the Effect on
Filter Performance
The workshop will begin with a discussion of the
granular media filtration process and why it should
be considered a ‘batch process’.
Following this, case studies will be presented that
compare backwash procedures used in various types
of water treatment plants. Case studies for both
gravity and pressure filters will be included.
The backwash steps discussed will include:
n Filter drain-down
n Air scour, including rates and duration
n Low-rate and high-rate backwash, including
flowrate and duration
n Filter media restratification
The workshop will provide Operators with
answers to the following questions:
n What is the relationship between poor filter
performance and backwash?
n How long does it take to see the effect of a poor
backwash program on filter performance?
n How long does it take to see the effect of
changes made to the backwash program on
filter performance?
n How can the backwash procedure contribute to
filter media loss?
n Which backwash procedure is the best?
n Which backwash parameters and data should
the Operator be monitoring, trending and
collecting?
The workshop will also discuss:
n Stand-alone air scour and backwash vs.
concurrent air-water wash: Which is better?
n Backwash turbidity profile: What does it tell us?
What doesn’t it tell us?
n Monitoring and trending of backwash pressure:
Why is it a critical part of filter operation?
WS #3 Transient and Surge Related Pipe Bursts,
Water Loss and Damage Prevention
Pipe bursts because of transients and surges within a
piping network are a very common problem
throughout the world. Not only are the maintenance
costs of these repairs extremely expensive, but when
you add in possible litigation for third party damages,
employee/public safety combined with the potentially
significant value (cost) of the lost water, one quickly
realizes the significance of what may appear simply as
“another pipe burst”. It is not uncommon for water
utilities that serve a typical population base of 1 – 1.5
million people to be quoting pipe burst occurrences of
between 500 – 1000 incidents per year. To hear
maintenance repair costs quoted at potentially
thousands of dollars per incident, is not uncommon.
Surge or Transients are the result of a rapid change in
velocity which typically will happen when flow
suddenly stops or starts. This stored energy, released as
pressure can destroy fittings, pipes, valves,
instrumentation and pumps. The associated pressure
waves travel the length of the pipeline, upstream or
downstream, of the offending device (pump, valve, etc)
and then reverses direction. The waves move at
constant speed until they meet a boundary of some
sort. The reflected waves and incident waves
superimpose to produce a more complicated wave
pattern that includes double peaks and double troughs.
The resulting consequence of inattention or improper
protection would of course be a pipe burst or
equipment failure resulting in damage, lost water and
potential litigation.
Transients, surges and the resulting pipe bursts can be
created through numerous events. Loss of power at a
pump station, pump station PLC malfunction, single
speed pump motors with out adequate pump control
valves or the rapid closure of gate valves or butterfly
valves within the distribution system are a few of the
more common incidents.
This paper does not deal with the analyses of transients
or surges (other than a brief overview) as there are
numerous experts in this field and a wealth of
information and engineering expertise available.
There are a variety of solutions available that can result
in significant improvements regarding the numbers
and frequency of pipe bursts within a water utilities
distribution or transmission system. This paper will
focus on the following solutions complete with a brief
explanation of the application and the intricacies of the
associated equipment. An overview will be given of non
– diaphragm operated control valve solutions complete
with history and advantages and disadvantages.
Non – Diaphragm Operated Control Valve Solutions
n Rupture Discs/Burst Discs
n Surge Tanks or Surge Drums
The core paper will focus on pressure relief diaphragm
operated control valve solutions and the resulting
benefits, while taking the mystery out of the selection
process and variety of options.
Diaphragm Operated Control Valve Solutions
n Pressure Relief Valve
n Surge Anticipating Relief Valve
n Surge Anticipating on Rate of Rise Relief Valve
n Surge Anticipating Relief Valve (electrically timed to
low pressure reading or power failure at pumps)
n Electronic Control to respond to any out of limit
signal
Diaphragm Operated Pump Control Valves will be
briefly included in this paper for consideration where
pumps operating with single speed motors are utilized.
Pumps that operate utilizing modern VFD (variable
frequency drive) motors will not typically require
diaphragm operated pump control valves for normal
service but will most definitely require careful review
and selection of appropriate pressure relief valve
protection for power failure incidents
The paper will describe a variety of situations while
citing examples of transients/surges and the resulting
damage. The above solutions will be reviewed, while
discussing the key advantages and disadvantages of
each method of Pressure Relief as well as key
application information and examples of a variety of
successful applications. The paper will clearly present a
variety of pressure relief options for water utilities and
educate interested parties on the overall reduction of
pipe bursts and the associated costs combined with the
corresponding savings in water.
WS #4 Distribution Maintenance
Topics to Cover
n Fire Hydrants – Inspections & Repairs
n Water Main Valves
n Unidirectional Flushing of the Water Mains
n Leak Detection
WS #5 Achieving Safety, Performance
Optimization and Overview of an
Engineered Chemical Feed System
Many public water utilities have a growing
awareness for safety and performance
optimization when it comes to their chemical
feed. Understanding how an engineered
chemical feed system operates and how every
component on the system contributes to safety
and process optimization is important.
Main focus points of ProMinent Fluid Controls
Ltd. presentation will be:
n General overview of an engineered
chemical feed system
n Advantages of using an engineered
chemical feed system versus a standalone
metering pump, focusing on the categories
below:
n Safety
n Performance optimization
n Maintenance
n Best practices used when installing an
engineered chemical feed system.
WS #6 Multiple Pathways to Resiliency
Increased resilience does not fall under the
purview of a single organization and does not
exist as a single point on the horizon. The
emergency management version of resilience
is achieved through the strategic and effective
coordination of multiple organizations within a
community and multiple communities within a
province. The presentation will describe the
Saskatchewan Public Safety Divisions vision of
a multiple pathway to resilience strategy.
SUPPLIER PROFILE
Keesha Dorosz-Rosario
Western Regional Manager of Water Solutions at KTI Ltd. / Sensus Canada
What lead you into your current field?
With a Business Communications degree from Brock
University, I entered the world of Communications, Software
with Fundraising and Sales. I realized the power of water when
I was seeking to make a difference in my career in addition to
volunteering thanks to a University friend and his excitement
for weather based water technology. I joined forces to start a
Smart Watering Irrigation business with ownership in Western
Canada. Ahead of time in our region; realizing my market was
not universally metered I was recruited by KTI / Sensus taking
the leap from small water to big water! Best decision I made
and full of exciting challenges.
Tell us about some of the experiences you have had in your
current role.
I’ll never forget within two weeks of starting this position there
was a news story about the multi multi million dollar meter
mistake. When I was tasked to look into this further, it brought
to light how layered a problem can truly be. The utility had a
couple meters programmed incorrectly in imperial gallons
instead of cubic meters. In addition, the utility billing system
was adding a decimal multiplier in the wrong place. It was an
interesting exercise to sit back and do my due diligence,
troubleshoot and get all of the information before jumping to
conclusions.
My favourite part of the job is interacting with people and
working with diverse personalities and perspectives on a
Flexnet/ Advanced metering infrastructure project.
Technology is moving forward quickly which is so exciting
when it comes to smart cities!
What advice would you give someone looking to get into the
industry?
Step out, be you and ask to shadow people in different areas of
water. Utilize the conferences like SWWA to socialize and
connect to new people. A new contact is another door that is
open so don’t be shy. It is a rewarding and exciting world
especially if you have a natural curiosity to make a difference
whether this is distribution and supply, water or wastewater
treatment. There are so many moving pieces and I’m currently
with a company who continues to grow and explore advanced
technology solutions.
What is something that you have learned that has helped
you become the person you are today?
To be authentic in who you are, ask many questions, seek out
feedback and debriefs, set the ego and pride aside to learn
from others, and aspire to make a difference. Step out of your
comfort zone. For those of you who know me I love people, as
each person has a story. Get to really know people as your
solid relationships will help marry and weave your career and
friendships. It will bring you so much happiness -trust me!
Who would you say were the key influencers and influences
in your life so far?
I have so many; and I am fond of birthdays as if it were not for
those very people being born into this world you surround
yourself with, you wouldn’t be who you are today! My mother,
brother, friends and family. Specifically Mentors of personal
and business nature include my Big Sister Patricia Barbato, the
supportive and forward looking KTI /Sensus management and
team and many customers. My Rotary Club members have also
been a great advisory team over 10 years.
How do you keep a work/life balance?
There are times I have not been the greatest at
the life balance versus work however it is always
harmony in progress. Weaving the two together
has helped a great deal along with the joy I have
volunteering for Rotary International and Big
Sisters and Big Brothers. I tack on personal time to
work travel and find time to hike, golf, bike, read
and write while immersed in nature.
What are your hopes for the future?
To provide clean drinking water for all, peace in
our communities and the world, and empower
our children and youth to make a difference in
our future. Youth have a lot of insight that can also
teach adults. I lead two service trips to Guatemala
through Rotary international that changed
perspective for me!
What would you say has been one of the best
moments of your professional life to date?
I would say looking back the best moment was
when I let go of my own business when it wasn’t
profitable. At the time this was a challenge.
However looking back it was probably the best
decision I made to join the company I am now
with and all of the learnings that have come with
it including all of the connections with customers
and coworkers and other industry professionals.
After working for oneself, you definitely learn the
value of time and money, focus, human
interactions, and accountability. You’re able to
look at business holistically from the strategic and
operational and administrative viewpoints.
How do you make a difference in your role, what
are your strengths? What do you think is the
most valuable asset a person can have?
Personally my own asset is developing
connections and connecting other people. I have
a genuine curiosity about others and love
creating new friendships and connections
everywhere I go. If you ever show up to a trade
show on your own come over and visit me and
you’ll be having dinner with some interesting
people by evening!
Your most valuable asset is authenticity. You do
you. Be brave to bring your strengths to the table
but don’t be too proud to ask for help and utilize
the strengths of others to offset your weaknesses.
I’m honoured to work in this industry and learn
from so many intelligent water and technology
specialists!
summer heat
Safety
During the summer months the heat
can be higher than others, one of the
most common problems people
experience is heat stroke. The term
heat stroke means a type of heat
illness that results in the body being a
temperature over forty degrees
Celsius. Some of the other symptoms
include red, dry or damp skin,
headache, and dizziness. Heat stroke is
the most serious form of heat injury
and is considered a medical emergency. If you suspect that
someone has heat stroke, also known as sunstroke call 911
immediately and give first aid until paramedics arrive. Heat stroke
can kill and also damage other internal organs. Some of the signs
you would look for as a person looking for symptoms are
complaining of a headache, dizziness, lack of sweating, red skin.
People over the age of 50 is where you mostly see heat stroke, but
athletes will also experience it because they are outdoors for long
periods of time. One way to avoid this from happening is to not be
directly in the sun for a long time and to make sure that you hydrate
by drinking a lot of water. One thing a person should remember
when dealing with heat stroke is to be aware of the signs and make
sure to call 911 as fast as possible. You never know when you might
save a life.
SUPPLIER PROFILE
Alain Lalonde, P.Eng.
Echologics Regional Manager for Canada with Mueller Water Products
What lead you into your current field?
Ever since childhood, I have been
fascinated with water and the power it
harnesses. After obtaining my B.A.Sc.
in Civil Engineering at Ottawa
University, a career in Municipal Water
Infrastructure was pretty much a
given. I have been linked to the water
& wastewater industry for over 26-
years now and have been with Mueller
for the past 4 years.
Tell us about some of the experiences
you have had in your current role.
In dealing with business development
& sales, you learn about the issues that
water utility managers face on a daily
basis. The most apparent is the gap
between the need for water
infrastructure renewal and lack of
available funding & budgets to finance
this need. Bringing forward solutions
to help utilities prioritize their
spending to the right assets and
prolong the useful life of the existing
infrastructure is quite gratifying.
What advice would you give someone
looking to get into the industry?
Be passionate in all that you do and do
things for the better of the industry
and not just for your own personal
gain. Participating in industry
associations and giving back to the
industry is often more rewarding then
the paycheck you receive! I have met
so many passionate and generous
people in this industry and through
this I have grown and learned so much!
What is something that you have
learned that has helped you become
the person you are today?
Being a team player and sharing your
knowledge will bring back greater
rewards in the end and ensure that
your career is fulfilling.
Who would you say were the key
influencers and influences in your life
so far?
I have so many to name but a few key
persons include Julian Thornton, Bill
Gauley and Allan Lambert – they are
international authorities in Non-
Revenue Water & Water Conservation
management. Without them, my
passion towards water loss
management would not be as
grandiose as it is now!
How do you keep a work/life balance?
In today’s continuously connected
environment, this can be difficult. One
key thing is time management and not
letting the small things sweat you. I
often think of myself as having a
strong “on/off” switch for work and
when you set time for life and family
where the switch needs to be off – be
sure it stays off!! But when you need to
be “on” – be “on” with 110% effort!
What are your hopes for the future?
To have contributed to the water
industry as much as it has serve me.
And to hopefully continue to serve the
industry in a volunteer capacity well
pass my retirement!
What would you say has been one of
the best moments of your
professional life to date?
The success I had in creating, building
and managing a successful consulting
/ contracting business for 18 years with
my business partners. Providing
employment and mentoring young
engineers and technicians – seeing
them flourish and be passionate while
serving loyally has been the highlight
thus far. And I say thus far as my career
is not yet done!!!
How do you make a difference in
your role, what are your strengths?
What do you think is the most
valuable asset a person can have?
And excuse my repetitive rhetoric,
but being a team player and giving
back to the industry while mentoring
new professionals is likely one of my
key strengths and passion.
As for a most
valuable asset,
being honest
with yourself
and others –
with honesty
comes trust!
