“You either create something and you keep it a secret and you die with it... or you can<br />

benefit the craft.” You choose. Vidal Sassoon, author of this reflection, was someone who<br />

always had a clear vision: sharing, helping others to succeed and ensuring the growth of<br />

the hairdresser as a whole through education was one of the great creeds that marked his<br />

lifetime. I met Vidal in 2004 and, the second time we crossed paths, he opened the doors<br />

of his home in Los Angeles to a group of industry pros to enjoy an unforgettable evening.<br />

Open. The doors. Of your home. I can’t think of a more beautiful allegory that more<br />

accurately describes what Vidal did and that so many hairdressers have continued to do<br />

in pursuing the future of this industry: sharing. There is a wise saying:<br />

“If you’re not making someone else’s<br />

life better, you’re living your life wrong,”<br />

and it’s a perfect fit for hairdressers.<br />

This is the most precious essence of the craft: beautifying another person, making him or<br />

her feel better about him/herself, changing a life through one’s image. Without a doubt,<br />

those who manage to reach this point can proudly say that they have become great<br />

hairdressers. But there is still a long way to go. Go further, close the circle and, as Vidal<br />

said, share what you know in favor not only of your clients’ self-image, but in educating<br />

your colleagues... which amounts to being so much more. Something that makes a<br />

difference not only in the lives of others, but also in your own. We all know the biggest<br />

names that have marked the education of this industry. Everyone remembers the trainers<br />

who helped him or her to become the professional they are today, the hairdressers who<br />

influenced them, the courses they attended, the online training followed...<br />

It should be remembered, however, that education is not only given on stage, in classrooms<br />

or on the other side of the camera. Education is an attitude. Education is a habit. Education<br />

begins with small gestures, helping the colleague next to you or the assistant you want to<br />

see grow or the team you stimulate so they can fly on their own. At the end of the day,<br />

happiness is found in realizing that the more you share, the more you have.<br />

Whenever Julianne Hough steps out, she always does so in style. So when it came time to turn heads<br />

on the <strong>2019</strong> Billboard Music Awards red carpet at MGM Grand Garden Arena in May, she went<br />

to Nine Zero One Salon in Los Angeles for a fresh hair look. “This cut is the exact opposite of the<br />

original ‘Safe Haven’ #TheJulianne cut done back in 2013,” explained Riawna, “It’s blunt, thick and 180<br />

degrees across.” Sometimes you have to adjust your bearings mid-way. “She wanted to grow it out,”<br />

said Riawna, “but that awkward stage and funky flip on the shoulders got the best of us!” Still, to get<br />

this fabulous look took some effort. “I cut her 4 different times in the same sitting,” Capri explained,<br />

“First time was how she came in with it styled, second, on wet hair, then after the blowout, and lastly<br />

after I styled. That’s how I got her hair exactly where we wanted it to live. I used the over/under<br />

curling technique with the T3 iron to give her that ‘fresh to death look’ accentuating the fresh, thick<br />

blunt chop.” A total look well-worth the time and effort!<br />

“Hilary had been toying around with the idea of bangs for a few weeks,” reveals Nine Zero One stylist<br />

Nikki Lee, “but I just ignored her, hoping she would forget about them! Haha! - But we finally just<br />

went for it and we’re so glad we did!” Indeed, there are many looks that gorgeous can’t pull off, but<br />

Nikki also knows what’s best. “Instead of doing a full on bang, we opted for more of a curtain bang<br />

that swept to both sides,” she explained, “I used my texturizing shears to do most of the cutting so the<br />

ends would feel light and the bangs would push away from her face.” But of course, that’s only part of<br />

the story. “For styling this look, first I prepped the hair with In Common Magic Myst and Wow styling<br />

cream to provide nourishment and a smooth blowout,” continued Nikki, “For volume I added R+Co’s<br />

Dallas Thickening Spray so there would be extra movement in the hair. I then used a T3 curling<br />

iron to create the perfect loose waves aka whisper waves and a swept bang, finalizing with R+Co’s<br />

Mannequin Styling Paste cocktailed with Tinsel Smoothing Oil for texture and shine. The vibe is very<br />

70s and a perfect way to switch up her look!”

Girls will be girls whether they are trampling a soccer field or strutting a fashion show runway or red<br />

carpet. But when World Cup Championship Team Co-Captain Megan Rapinoe walked into Nine<br />

Zero One Salon after enjoying all the attention and accolades of their Women’s World Cup win, she<br />

probably hadn’t been planning an Instagram reprise. Instead, friend and co-owner Riawna Capri<br />

tickled Rapinoe’s cool blond a surprisingly becoming pink, perfect inspiration for a “Rapinkoe”<br />

hashtag. “It’s been so long since Megan has had time to get her hair done since she’s always traveling<br />

to different countries and it’s hard to communicate what you want,” shared Capri, “So I went tight<br />

on the sides and shaved, then left the hair longer on top for more texture.” Capri went on to advise,<br />

“Styling wise, always start with Magic Myst AKA, your vitamins first, to keep the hair healthy and<br />

shiny. I blew her out, used texturizing spray at the root for lift and a pomade on her ends, then twisted<br />

to create extra texture. I also waxed down the sides tight to give it more of a dramatic look. To get this<br />

to convey subliminal messages, provoke, and trigger<br />

personal interpretations. Claudio Lazo is one such artist.<br />

It’s obvious that at first glance there is much more to these images than just hair. This collection manifests a vision that<br />

reaches beyond trends and beauty and into the realm of artwork. There is a message here: of beauty of course, but also of<br />

trammels, limitations, constrictions. Indeed, Claudio Lazo, Wella Artist and owner of C the Salon in Los Angeles, admits,<br />

“The idea that inspired these photos is ‘self expression’, and how hairdressers and creative artist are bound with self doubt.”<br />

He then elaborated, “Each of these photos represents a different way we hide our faces and hesitate to speak out. We ask<br />

questions like: ‘Why can’t I express myself?’ ‘Does anyone really care what I have to say?’ ‘How do we break the ties that<br />

bind us and reach the fulfillment we desire?’” Here there are several stories to be told... each in its own way.

Today grey is the new black, and not only when speaking only about couture! Now that hair coloring<br />

color while their parents are more often than not embracing their gray hair, often opting for classic carefree<br />

issue: “The architecture of hair design must be adapted to suit face shape and body structure. Lifestyle will<br />

dictate how much time you want to budget. Are you an on-the-go gal with a regimen of wash, product and<br />

run? Or do you set aside a little time with a blow-dryer and hot tools to create your look?”<br />

Aging may bring some new challenges when it comes to hair, but nothing that can't be resolved in some way. Karen Gordon,<br />

President, Cosmetologists Chicago, comments, “One in four women experience thinning hair by the time they are in their<br />

forties due to stress, diet, hormones, the environment and hereditary factors, so I designed a protocol to create the best<br />

environment for growing thicker, healthier hair. Extensions and hairpieces can also help enhance length and volume. Today,<br />

when you purchase a hairpiece made with good quality hair and it is fitted properly, they can be completely undetectable!”<br />

In addition to a little extra TLC, consult with your hairdresser about what cut&color is best for you. Rempel explains: “My<br />

rule with my guest is... if you are growing out your natural color, you have to 'rock' it out with a slammin’ haircut. If you wish<br />

to color your hair, it is all about tone. As our skin changes, so does the depth and tone of our skin. We must accommodate<br />

As one of the few women who own their own hair care brand, today Beth Bewley is<br />

more of an inspiration to the industry than ever, overcoming loss and obstacles to<br />

guarantee continued growth while remaining faithful to the founding principles she<br />

established with her late husband Don Bewley over 20 years ago.<br />

What do you think sets Eufora apart as a company?<br />

Our genuine, authentic and unwavering dedication to the salon professional and to<br />

providing them with everything that they need to grow, thrive and achieve great levels<br />

of success. Today many professional brands seem to be losing their dedication to salon<br />

profitability by partnering with large beauty supply stores and online retailers, but our<br />

broad and deep dedication to stylists and owners encompasses not just great products,<br />

but also real education through our Advanced Training Academy.<br />

What has your journey to the forefront of Eufora been like?<br />

Honestly, not easy. Don’s passing required me to step to the forefront... this was a bit<br />

out of my comfort zone, and frankly still is a little bit. I had to find the resilience and<br />

strength to push through and combat those trying who were trying to take advantage<br />

of our tragedy. I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by amazing people. This phase of<br />

my journey challenges me every day, but I’m blessed to have the Eufora nation.<br />

What projects and challenges in Eufora have been most gratifying?<br />

Tell us about hairdressing industry education and the Don Bewley Memorial Scholarship Fund?<br />

When you stop learning, you stop growing. At Eufora we have a saying that we speak loud and clear;<br />

“Education is our way of life”. There is nothing as powerful as being eye to eye with a master<br />

instructor to become exceptional at precision cutting or coloring. There is nothing that replaces the<br />

connection, one on one coaching and support when striving to run a successful business. There was<br />

no better way to honor Don’s legacy than with a scholarship. Don was passionate in his message that<br />

to succeed in this industry you had to be dedicated to ongoing learning. He would be proud that we<br />

honor him this way.<br />

Can you tell us Eufora key product launches and plans in the next months?<br />

Eufora has a very complete, diverse and high-performance product portfolio. Innovation often<br />

requires that we change the consumer behavior on how to use products, and that is never an easy<br />

undertaking. Currently Eufora is in development on a unique approach to cleansing products,<br />

multi-functional and clean styling products and innovation in hair color technology.<br />

spoke to the protagonists about the<br />

method behind their madness and<br />

how they intend to follow through.

brainstorming and planning done<br />

by R+Co Co-Founders and The<br />

Collective members, Electric<br />

House is actually an experience<br />

designed to ‘electrify’ the attendees<br />

– not in the sense of shocking, but<br />

rather stimulating, energizing,<br />

illuminating. The evening will be<br />

all about looking to the past to<br />

inspire our future in the hair<br />

industry, including dozens of hair<br />

Celebrity Stylist and co-founder<br />

of R+Co reveals his eureka<br />

moment, “We did this great event<br />

in L.A. last year and saw that the<br />

east coast needed the same sort of<br />

attention, but went in a kind of<br />

different direction to do it... This<br />

time, we’re really creating an<br />

Electric and Eccentric atmosphere.”<br />

He also reasons and explains the<br />

whys and wherefores. “Education is<br />

a little more eclectic now. You need<br />

to know the past to be able to go<br />

through the future... It’s more than<br />

just cutting hair, it’s creating an<br />

image.”<br />

Thom Priano, Celebrity Men’s<br />

Stylist and co-founder of R+Co,<br />

agrees, saying “Electric House gives<br />

me the opportunity to create<br />

excitement and broaden everyone’s<br />

horizons to do something out of<br />

their comfort zone.”<br />

Howard McLaren, co-founder<br />

and Creative Director of R+Co<br />

envisions the event as an<br />

opportunity to round out the<br />

overall hairdressing culture of those<br />

in attendance. “We bring a lot of<br />

history to reinforce how important<br />

structure is to a career,” McLaren<br />

explains, “It’s our job to make<br />

people understand the history to<br />

move forward with more accuracy.”<br />

“I would love to see a shift in<br />

how people enter the industry,”<br />

he continues, “with more<br />

technology involved in getting a<br />

license and classes on the history<br />

of hair, fashion, communication<br />

to give people the ability to<br />

explore beyond beauty.”<br />

How do these experts envision the<br />

future of hairdressing? Each of<br />

these experts has his (or her) own<br />

ideas and reflections. Ashley<br />

Streicher, Celebrity Hairstylist and<br />

R+Co Collective Member broods<br />

over the onset of the internet and<br />

social media. “I grew up having to<br />

fly overseas to Vidal Sassoon and<br />

get proper education, whereas<br />

now... you can go online,” she<br />

observes, “Styling information, even<br />

haircuts, are now online in video<br />

form immediately – which can be<br />

good and bad. Not all the<br />

information out there is credible.”<br />

Thom Priano says, “We all wish we<br />

had a crystal ball to look into the<br />

future of hairdressing.<br />

Unfortunately we don’t... the world<br />

of Instagram, YouTube and<br />

Facebook has taken over!” Then on<br />

a more practical note he predicts,<br />

“Not only do you have to be good at<br />

your craft but you also need to be<br />

good at using the tools to promote<br />

yourself on these platforms. This is<br />

where people go to see your work<br />

before they even think about<br />

booking an appointment.”<br />

salon will be in Bethlehem<br />

windows, designing color bars with<br />

(CPNA), the largest B2B<br />

beauty exhibition in the<br />

Americas, hosted its 17th<br />

edition from July 28-30,<br />

<strong>2019</strong> at the Mandalay Bay<br />

Convention Center in<br />

Las Vegas. The exhibition<br />

welcomed retailers, distributors,<br />

beauty brands, and suppliers, from<br />

across the globe, offering unique<br />

opportunities to come together,<br />

make new relationships, foster<br />

collaborations, and get inspired,<br />

truly bringing the world of beauty<br />

under one roof. Participants fully<br />

immersed themselves in all things<br />

beauty and walked away with<br />

unparalleled business building<br />

tools and network connections over<br />

the course of the three-day event.<br />

Held annually in Las Vegas, over<br />

40,000 visitors engaged with 1,435<br />

exhibitors representing 43 countries,<br />

and were able to see and experience<br />

new programs, special areas,<br />

conferences, and networking<br />

opportunities. The show floor<br />

space covered 312,638 sqf (29,045<br />

sqm) of space (up 3% from 2018).<br />

CPNA showcased all facets of the<br />

beauty industry, presented across<br />

three main sections, two of which<br />

were dedicated to Cosmetics &<br />

Personal Care, with growth in the<br />

skin care sector, and Professional<br />

Beauty. The special show floor<br />

areas included Discover Beauty,<br />

Discover Beauty Spotlights,<br />

Discover Green, The Beauty<br />

Vanities, and Tones of Beauty.<br />

Pavilions having a prominent<br />

For the first time, CPNA<br />

introduced Cosmopack North<br />

Creative Director Paul Stafford,<br />

Amy showed off her talents<br />

including her blow-drying skills<br />

in looks she could achieve with<br />

the new Denman Hot Curl<br />

brushes. Over two busy days<br />

Amy kept audiences captivated<br />

with exquisite work created<br />

using the D3, the Paddle Brush<br />

and other Denman tools.<br />

For Amy this was a dream come<br />

true. “I’ve always loved stage<br />

work,” she says, “but working<br />

in a small, independent salon,<br />

I never really got the chance.<br />

Thanks to Denman Stage Star,<br />

I’m experiencing the life of an<br />

international hairdresser!”<br />

She adds, “I have learned so<br />

much; it’s been such a great<br />

experience!”<br />
