“You either create something and you keep it a secret and you die with it... or you can

benefit the craft.” You choose. Vidal Sassoon, author of this reflection, was someone who

always had a clear vision: sharing, helping others to succeed and ensuring the growth of

the hairdresser as a whole through education was one of the great creeds that marked his

lifetime. I met Vidal in 2004 and, the second time we crossed paths, he opened the doors

of his home in Los Angeles to a group of industry pros to enjoy an unforgettable evening.

Open. The doors. Of your home. I can’t think of a more beautiful allegory that more

accurately describes what Vidal did and that so many hairdressers have continued to do

in pursuing the future of this industry: sharing. There is a wise saying:

“If you’re not making someone else’s

life better, you’re living your life wrong,”

and it’s a perfect fit for hairdressers.

This is the most precious essence of the craft: beautifying another person, making him or

her feel better about him/herself, changing a life through one’s image. Without a doubt,

those who manage to reach this point can proudly say that they have become great

hairdressers. But there is still a long way to go. Go further, close the circle and, as Vidal

said, share what you know in favor not only of your clients’ self-image, but in educating

your colleagues... which amounts to being so much more. Something that makes a

difference not only in the lives of others, but also in your own. We all know the biggest

names that have marked the education of this industry. Everyone remembers the trainers

who helped him or her to become the professional they are today, the hairdressers who

influenced them, the courses they attended, the online training followed...

It should be remembered, however, that education is not only given on stage, in classrooms

or on the other side of the camera. Education is an attitude. Education is a habit. Education

begins with small gestures, helping the colleague next to you or the assistant you want to

see grow or the team you stimulate so they can fly on their own. At the end of the day,

happiness is found in realizing that the more you share, the more you have.

Whenever Julianne Hough steps out, she always does so in style. So when it came time to turn heads

on the 2019 Billboard Music Awards red carpet at MGM Grand Garden Arena in May, she went

to Nine Zero One Salon in Los Angeles for a fresh hair look. “This cut is the exact opposite of the

original ‘Safe Haven’ #TheJulianne cut done back in 2013,” explained Riawna, “It’s blunt, thick and 180

degrees across.” Sometimes you have to adjust your bearings mid-way. “She wanted to grow it out,”

said Riawna, “but that awkward stage and funky flip on the shoulders got the best of us!” Still, to get

this fabulous look took some effort. “I cut her 4 different times in the same sitting,” Capri explained,

“First time was how she came in with it styled, second, on wet hair, then after the blowout, and lastly

after I styled. That’s how I got her hair exactly where we wanted it to live. I used the over/under

curling technique with the T3 iron to give her that ‘fresh to death look’ accentuating the fresh, thick

blunt chop.” A total look well-worth the time and effort!

“Hilary had been toying around with the idea of bangs for a few weeks,” reveals Nine Zero One stylist

Nikki Lee, “but I just ignored her, hoping she would forget about them! Haha! - But we finally just

went for it and we’re so glad we did!” Indeed, there are many looks that gorgeous can’t pull off, but

Nikki also knows what’s best. “Instead of doing a full on bang, we opted for more of a curtain bang

that swept to both sides,” she explained, “I used my texturizing shears to do most of the cutting so the

ends would feel light and the bangs would push away from her face.” But of course, that’s only part of

the story. “For styling this look, first I prepped the hair with In Common Magic Myst and Wow styling

cream to provide nourishment and a smooth blowout,” continued Nikki, “For volume I added R+Co’s

Dallas Thickening Spray so there would be extra movement in the hair. I then used a T3 curling

iron to create the perfect loose waves aka whisper waves and a swept bang, finalizing with R+Co’s

Mannequin Styling Paste cocktailed with Tinsel Smoothing Oil for texture and shine. The vibe is very

70s and a perfect way to switch up her look!”

Girls will be girls whether they are trampling a soccer field or strutting a fashion show runway or red

carpet. But when World Cup Championship Team Co-Captain Megan Rapinoe walked into Nine

Zero One Salon after enjoying all the attention and accolades of their Women’s World Cup win, she

probably hadn’t been planning an Instagram reprise. Instead, friend and co-owner Riawna Capri

tickled Rapinoe’s cool blond a surprisingly becoming pink, perfect inspiration for a “Rapinkoe”

hashtag. “It’s been so long since Megan has had time to get her hair done since she’s always traveling

to different countries and it’s hard to communicate what you want,” shared Capri, “So I went tight

on the sides and shaved, then left the hair longer on top for more texture.” Capri went on to advise,

“Styling wise, always start with Magic Myst AKA, your vitamins first, to keep the hair healthy and

shiny. I blew her out, used texturizing spray at the root for lift and a pomade on her ends, then twisted

to create extra texture. I also waxed down the sides tight to give it more of a dramatic look. To get this

celebratory nuance Capri used Joico Blonde Life® Lightening Powder and Joico Color Intensity.”

Editorial hairstylists strive to enter the realm of pure art

to convey subliminal messages, provoke, and trigger

personal interpretations. Claudio Lazo is one such artist.

It’s obvious that at first glance there is much more to these images than just hair. This collection manifests a vision that

reaches beyond trends and beauty and into the realm of artwork. There is a message here: of beauty of course, but also of

trammels, limitations, constrictions. Indeed, Claudio Lazo, Wella Artist and owner of C the Salon in Los Angeles, admits,

“The idea that inspired these photos is ‘self expression’, and how hairdressers and creative artist are bound with self doubt.”

He then elaborated, “Each of these photos represents a different way we hide our faces and hesitate to speak out. We ask

questions like: ‘Why can’t I express myself?’ ‘Does anyone really care what I have to say?’ ‘How do we break the ties that

bind us and reach the fulfillment we desire?’” Here there are several stories to be told... each in its own way.

Aging may bring some new challenges when it comes to hair, but nothing that can't be resolved in some way. Karen Gordon,

President, Cosmetologists Chicago, comments, “One in four women experience thinning hair by the time they are in their

forties due to stress, diet, hormones, the environment and hereditary factors, so I designed a protocol to create the best

environment for growing thicker, healthier hair. Extensions and hairpieces can also help enhance length and volume. Today,

when you purchase a hairpiece made with good quality hair and it is fitted properly, they can be completely undetectable!”

In addition to a little extra TLC, consult with your hairdresser about what cut&color is best for you. Rempel explains: “My

rule with my guest is... if you are growing out your natural color, you have to 'rock' it out with a slammin’ haircut. If you wish

to color your hair, it is all about tone. As our skin changes, so does the depth and tone of our skin. We must accommodate

From chestnut to caramel corn, passing through bronze, coffee and

chocolate. Brunettes have the upper hand in September. A selection

of nuances, versatile by nature. Honey and caramel go hand in hand,

igniting in copper, more subtle in coffee tones.

As one of the few women who own their own hair care brand, today Beth Bewley is

more of an inspiration to the industry than ever, overcoming loss and obstacles to

guarantee continued growth while remaining faithful to the founding principles she

established with her late husband Don Bewley over 20 years ago.

What do you think sets Eufora apart as a company?

Our genuine, authentic and unwavering dedication to the salon professional and to

providing them with everything that they need to grow, thrive and achieve great levels

of success. Today many professional brands seem to be losing their dedication to salon

profitability by partnering with large beauty supply stores and online retailers, but our

broad and deep dedication to stylists and owners encompasses not just great products,

but also real education through our Advanced Training Academy.

What has your journey to the forefront of Eufora been like?

Honestly, not easy. Don’s passing required me to step to the forefront... this was a bit

out of my comfort zone, and frankly still is a little bit. I had to find the resilience and

strength to push through and combat those trying who were trying to take advantage

of our tragedy. I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by amazing people. This phase of

my journey challenges me every day, but I’m blessed to have the Eufora nation.

What projects and challenges in Eufora have been most gratifying?

Oh, there are so many! Building a successful business overtime certainly has its

challenges. I’d have to say that it’s not one project or one milestone that has been most gratifying, it is

all of it. The growth of the company and my growth as an entrepreneur and owner, is something I’m

thankful for each and every day.

Tell us about hairdressing industry education and the Don Bewley Memorial Scholarship Fund?

When you stop learning, you stop growing. At Eufora we have a saying that we speak loud and clear;

“Education is our way of life”. There is nothing as powerful as being eye to eye with a master

instructor to become exceptional at precision cutting or coloring. There is nothing that replaces the

connection, one on one coaching and support when striving to run a successful business. There was

no better way to honor Don’s legacy than with a scholarship. Don was passionate in his message that

to succeed in this industry you had to be dedicated to ongoing learning. He would be proud that we

honor him this way.

Can you tell us Eufora key product launches and plans in the next months?

Eufora has a very complete, diverse and high-performance product portfolio. Innovation often

requires that we change the consumer behavior on how to use products, and that is never an easy

undertaking. Currently Eufora is in development on a unique approach to cleansing products,

multi-functional and clean styling products and innovation in hair color technology.

COTY Professional North American Beauty Envision Awards presented by TrendVision took place at the Hollywood

Palladium in Los Angeles, CA last July. This competition replaces the Wella Professionals’ TrendVision Awards and the

Sebastian Professional’s What’s Next Awards. The 27 finalists were narrowed down from over 5,000 entries, competing in

eight beauty categories ranging from “nail art” to “complete transformation”, creating looks around the “Kaleidoscope”

theme during the live competition. The different awards were sponsored by COTY Professional Beauty brands including

How do these experts envision the

future of hairdressing? Each of

ideas and reflections. Ashley

over the onset of the internet and

social media. “I grew up having to

fly overseas to Vidal Sassoon and

get proper education, whereas

now... you can go online,” she

observes, “Styling information, even

haircuts, are now online in video

form immediately – which can be

good and bad. Not all the

information out there is credible.”

Thom Priano says, “We all wish we

had a crystal ball to look into the

future of hairdressing.

Unfortunately we don’t... the world

of Instagram, YouTube and

Facebook has taken over!” Then on

a more practical note he predicts,

“Not only do you have to be good at

your craft but you also need to be

good at using the tools to promote

yourself on these platforms. This is

where people go to see your work

before they even think about

booking an appointment.”

(CPNA), the largest B2B

beauty exhibition in the

Americas, hosted its 17th

edition from July 28-30,

2019 at the Mandalay Bay

Convention Center in

Las Vegas. The exhibition

welcomed retailers, distributors,

beauty brands, and suppliers, from

across the globe, offering unique

opportunities to come together,

make new relationships, foster

collaborations, and get inspired,

truly bringing the world of beauty

under one roof. Participants fully

immersed themselves in all things

beauty and walked away with

unparalleled business building

tools and network connections over

the course of the three-day event.

Held annually in Las Vegas, over

40,000 visitors engaged with 1,435

exhibitors representing 43 countries,

and were able to see and experience

new programs, special areas,

conferences, and networking

opportunities. The show floor

space covered 312,638 sqf (29,045

sqm) of space (up 3% from 2018).

CPNA showcased all facets of the

beauty industry, presented across

three main sections, two of which

were dedicated to Cosmetics &

Personal Care, with growth in the

skin care sector, and Professional

Beauty. The special show floor

areas included Discover Beauty,

Discover Beauty Spotlights,

Discover Green, The Beauty

Vanities, and Tones of Beauty.

Pavilions having a prominent

For the first time, CPNA

introduced Cosmopack North

America, the third section acting

as a “show-within-a-show” and

ollowing her success at

wowing judges at Salon

International in London,

Denman Stage Star winner

Amy Senior got a chance

to demonstrate an array

of cutting, styling and

dressing skills live on stage at

this year’s IBS New York.

Working alongside Denman

Creative Director Paul Stafford,

Amy showed off her talents

including her blow-drying skills

in looks she could achieve with

the new Denman Hot Curl

brushes. Over two busy days

Amy kept audiences captivated

with exquisite work created

using the D3, the Paddle Brush

and other Denman tools.

For Amy this was a dream come

true. “I’ve always loved stage

work,” she says, “but working

in a small, independent salon,

I never really got the chance.

Thanks to Denman Stage Star,

I’m experiencing the life of an

international hairdresser!”

She adds, “I have learned so

much; it’s been such a great

experience!”

Committed to nurturing new

talent, Denman set up Stage Star

to give young hairdressers with

a passion for education and stage

work an opportunity to fulfil

their dreams. Now in its fifth

year, Stage Star has unearthed

some vibrant new talent and

importantly, provided the

platform where they can showcase

their skills worldwide.
